Rank the Star Wars Movies

Post by Master Magnus »

I'm not really much a fan of ranking things, but one year on after The Last Jedi was released, I thought it's time to rank the movies. I will rank the movies in two lists: The first list only includes the Saga movies and the other also includes the "A Star Wars Story" movies. Here goes:

Saga movies
1. The Empire Strikes Back
2. Revenge of the Sith
3. A New Hope
4. Attack of the Clones
5. Return of the Jedi
6. The Force Awakens
7. The Phantom Menace
8. The Last Jedi

Including the "A Star Wars Story" movies
1. The Empire Strikes Back
2. Rogue One
3. Revenge of the Sith
4. A New Hope
5. Attack of the Clones
6. Return of the Jedi
7. The Force Awakens
8. The Phantom Menace
9. Solo
10. The Last Jedi

Saga Movies:

1. A New Hope
2. Return of the Jedi
3. Empire Strikes Back
4. The Phantom Menace
5. Revenge of the Sith
6. Attack of the Clones
7. The Last Jedi
8. The Force Awakens

All Star Wars Movies (That I've seen as theatrical releases):

1. A New Hope
2. Return of the Jedi
3. Rogue One
4. Empire Strikes Back
5. The Phantom Menace
6. Revenge of the Sith
7. The Clone Wars
8. Attack of the Clones
9. Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure
10. Solo
11. The Last Jedi
12. The Force Awakens

While only tv movie in the US, Caravan of Courage had a theatrical release in Australia. The other ewok film (Ewoks: Battle for Endor) did have a theatrical release in some counries but not US or Australia.

I consciously excluded those movies just because they weren't theatrically released in the US. Caravan of Courage was theatrically released here in Sweden, surprisingly heavily cut (nine cuts of "violent" scenes" amounting to four minutes), and was given a "7" rating (meaning that children below the age of seven required parental guidance). Battle for Endor was only released to VHS (but was given a "15" rating, meaning that children below the age of 15 couldn't watch the movie).

Excluding the Ewok movies, I'd place the The Clone Wars above The Last Jedi. I haven't watched the Battle for Endor in 30 years and I'm not sure I'd like it as much today as I liked it then. I never liked Caravan of Courage though,

Mags, I accept why you excluded them. For me, I wanted to ranked every film I seen at the cinema to show where I'd rated the new films. It is a long time since I've seen either ewok movie but my memories of them give me a better feeling than these sequels.

Rank the Star Wars movies? Why not?

1. The Empire Strikes Back.
2. A New Hope (A.K.A. Star Wars to those of us who were around prior to the name-change).
3. Revenge of the Sith.
4. The Phantom Menace - Return of the Jedi (Tie).
5. Attack of the Clones.
6. The Force Awakens (A.K.A. The Farce Awakens).
7. Rogue One. (This one would rank higher by two places if they cut it down to the final space battle and deleted all the scenes from that dealing with Cassian Andor and Jynn Erso.)
8. Solo: A Star Wars Story (It is debatable whether this one even belongs on the list: it has about as much to do with Star Wars as Peter Jackson's execrable "Lord of the Rings" films have to do with Tolkien's novel, The Lord of the Rings; Solo looks more like an episode of Firefly, thirty years on, with Mal Reynolds and Zoe masquerading as "Tobias Beckett" and "Val". It reminded me strongly of the Firefly episode "The Train Job"; I've wanted to do a careful comparison of the two, but I can't bring myself to watch the film again.)
9. The Last Jedi (A.K.A. The Last Straw, and The Last Moof-Milker, and [barrage of deleted expletives]).

Or, shorter form: Star Wars was good; Empire Strikes Back was better, and--it's all been downhill since then (and off the cliff since TFA).

I have no memory of the Ewok shows and I only saw the Clone Wars movie once and aim to rewatch it on Disney Plus ASAP so that I can rank it here. I will not, however, rewatch the Holiday Special for any reason whatsoever.

And to the shorter form add: And The Rise of Skywalker managed to find a whole new cliff to go over. The final scene with the lightsabers... Grrr.

After having watched TROS on Blu-Ray twice now, I feel I must revise my ranking and there's also a SW movie I think deserves more credit.

Saga movies
1. The Empire Strikes Back
2. Revenge of the Sith (it's really a tie between TESB and ROTS)
3. A New Hope
4. Attack of the Clones
5. Return of the Jedi
6. The Phantom Menace
7. The Force Awakens
8. The Rise of Skywalker
9. The Last Jedi

6. Return of the Jedi
7. The Phantom Menace
8. The Force Awakens
9. The Clone Wars
10. Solo

12. Ewoks: The Battle for Endor
13. The Last Jedi
14. Ewoks: Caravan of Courage

I'm curious Mags. If you say in your first list that it's really a tie between ESB and ROTS, then how does Rogue One split them in the second list (unless it's a three way tie)?

I really had to ponder on that question... I really, really like Rogue One. It's the last (and probably only) really great of the Disney Star Wars movies. I have to think about this...

Take your time Mags, my curiosity won't kill me.

Yes Rogue One is the only SW film that Disney has got right. I think it is because to make it fit with ANH, they had to use similar production values, as well as deleted scenes from it. Maybe had they did the same with ST then they might have been better. It has always been like JJ loved OT, only to try to remake with new group but never understood the big three's dynamic.
