So I finally listened to it, and I'll weigh in here:
I think the look at Star Wars canon wasn't the best way to start the show. There's nothing wrong with it, but it's a little dry for an opening topic; I think the Garner interview would have made a more interesting beginning.
"Newspapers and Us" was a little long-winded and I didn't quite see the point... maybe summarize the article and have more opinion? Too much time was spent reading IMO.
The Garner interview was my favorite part. We got to learn some interesting stuff about everyone's favorite married radio hosts, and you picked some interesting and unexpected questions, such as the prisoner stuff.
The Musical demo was a little too long, but definitely intriguing. I want to check this out... Janine on Episode IV was a little lightweight, but honestly, I don't think I could say much more on it. I'm really incapable of rendering an opinion on the OT-- it's the OT man! I grew up with it! What could possibly be wrong with it?
To be honest, I skipped the wrestling segment because I don't follow wrestling.
It was cool to hear a Foundation trailer, but it made me think that for trailers to be used on the net, I need to include a web address or something...
Overall, a very interesting beginning. Some parts need refining, but that's all right-- look at where ROTO has gone compared to where it came from. SWAB might suffer from the one-host format, since that can be a little dull, but if you bring in guests and such enough, it should be all right.
Well, perhaps. But I had had that in mind for almost a year now and it was the first thing thought up for the show and so I thought just in that like mode that I should start off with it. In fact, that very bit was what was the original motivation for even doing a show because I thought I had a good idea and would likely never get it out if I didn't get it out there myself. The problem was, that try as I might, I couldn't make it any longer and more detailed than what it was. Hopefully next time it'll work out better for a main topic. Tentatively I'm planning a DVD review as the main bit for next episode, at least that's directly from me. Probably the interview and review will take centerstage next time.Originally Posted by Steve Mollmann,Sep 1 2004, 07:37 PM
I haven't decided yet if this will be a regular part or just occassional. I guess it depends on if there's actually any interest in it. Yeah, I didn't think about just a summarization of the article, when/if this bit happens again I'll keep your idea in mind. Thanks for it. "Newspapers and Us" was a little long-winded and I didn't quite see the point... maybe summarize the article and have more opinion?* Too much time was spent reading IMO.
Thanks. I'm going to try to get at least a couple of questions that deals with each person's life outside of Star Wars/sci-fi and so people can see that we too have more than just Star Wars or whatever else it could be on the brain all the time. I think we, as sci-fi fans get lumped into an unfair pot by the actions of a few extremists in sci-fi and hopefully some of these questions in the interview segments will be a reaction to that. The Garner interview was my favorite part.* We got to learn some interesting stuff about everyone's favorite married radio hosts, and you picked some interesting and unexpected questions, such as the prisoner stuff.
Well, that's why I had it as a segment unto itself. I didn't feel that it would be right for me to try to cut it down, I would have only likely messed it up if I had done that. But I'm sure the guys who made it will be pleased that someone else is getting turned on to their project. The Musical demo was a little too long, but definitely intriguing.* I want to check this out...
A lot, depends on who you ask. Yeah, I wasn't satisfied either, no offense to Janine, but it came out the way it did because we just weren't able to coordinate and get together to do some recording again so she just had to do it on her own. But she got her point across well enough I believe. This bit and IMO, the interview suffered from the fact that I didn't have a speakerphone at the time they were recorded and so I had to depend on Rich to record their end of the interview. I assure you and others who listened, that problem has been solved and will not be an issue in future interviews and the reviews of the other four films. I've already got one interview done and another movie review done. Just gotta get the others done. hehJanine on Episode IV was a little lightweight, but honestly, I don't think I could say much more on it.* I'm really incapable of rendering an opinion on the OT-- it's the OT man!* I grew up with it!* What could possibly be wrong with it?
Well, you might want to keep an eye out on Rich's part because it won't just be wrestling. We've decided that doing that only wouldn't be current enough and good enough for archival purposes as wrestling is so fluid and moving all the time. Rich will be doing a wide variety of topics in his bit, I think he's mentioned movie reviews and other things that he comes up with. I just kept his title of "roving wrestling reporter" because I liked how it sounded and frankly, couldn't think of anything else!! But rest assured, that his part will be MUCH more than just wrestling. To be honest, I skipped the wrestling segment because I don't follow wrestling.
Yeah, perhaps. Maybe when we get together later on for your interview and review, we can make sure to do website plugging for it.It was cool to hear a Foundation trailer, but it made me think that for trailers to be used on the net, I need to include a web address or something...
Thank you.Overall, a very interesting beginning.
I know. Not many know this, but this is the absolute FIRST thing I've ever done in any form like this at all. I didn't figure it would come out and be on the level of CR or ROTO, believe me.Some parts need refining...
To eventually become as good as ROTO is one of the best aspirations I could hope for. That or CR....but that's all right-- look at where ROTO has gone compared to where it came from.
Yeah, I'm kinda screwed in that department as there's no one in this area that I could bring in as a kind of co-host or anything like that. I guess you could call SWAB a direct descendant/bastard child of ChronoRadio if you like, since Nathan's format IS the one I borrowed off of for the vast majority of this show.SWAB might suffer from the one-host format, since that can be a little dull...
Fortunately I've got interviews lined up from now until at least next May, so HOPEFULLY I'll be allright in that department....but if you bring in guests and such enough, it should be all right.
Thank you Steve, for your thoughts and opinions on this episode. Anyone else?

Chuck: My God, I am in the bathroom! Is there nothing sacred to you people?
Casey: Just the right to bear arms.
Newspapers and Us: I dig this idea, but I do agree it could stand to have more of an opinion basis, rather than just reading the news article. Perhaps put up a link to a story from an online source and have people comment on it on the board before the show is recorded?
ANH Review: Dang, see, now I feel like we went WAY overboard on the AOTC one for May.
Rich's Segment: I have to admit, I don't get into professional wrestling, so I doubt this'll be my favorite part of the show, but I do like that Rich will have broader range of topics to use than just wrestling. I just hope that it doesn't end up clashing with topics for ROTO. I ran into that with my SWD "rants" because some of the topics I was covering there were topics that I would've otherwise ranted about in the commentaries for CR.

I already did. Thank you too.
Yeah, that's one idea. I've got a couple of others in thought for ideas for that segment. But I guess first I have to decide if it'll even be a regular part of the show or even happen again at all. I'll keep all informed.Originally posted by Nathan Butler@Sep 2 2004, 10:26 AM

NO WE DID NOT!!!!! What we did was exactly what I wanted to get. As I said above, the only reason Janine's came out like that was because our schedules, and by ours I mean mine, hers and Rich's, kept conflicting and we couldn't get together to do any recording together again. I know I've said to people privately that if they just want to record their review that that was fine, but since that one was the first, and because I so enjoyed talking to her and to Ron, that I really hoped that one could have been conversational. No, Nathan we did exactly what I had hoped for.

Well, since Rich's segment is for him to do whatever he wants with, things that he couldn't do with ROTO, I doubt we'll have to worry with that.

I've done nothing much as far as planning beyond this point other than that the July episode will likely be very Episode III centered and at some point I'll be doing an interview with the creators of Star Wars The Musical
From one creator of a "different from the norm" Star Wars project I say, 'Welcome to the world of SW Fan Audio'! Thick skin and listening ears are hard to develop (I should know), but they are necessary to these 'create-your-own-niche' projects. You've got both, and that is great. I agree with the views already posted. I do think another host would be very beneficial. A female co-host has worked very well for ROTO, so that is something to think about, but a couple of guys talking about SW also works (SWD). If you can't get someone in your studio, call them on a speaker phone and record that (Try it. Who knows?). Nathan is the pioneer (IMO) of creating segments in a radio show, so finding musical cues or segment intros might be helpful, too for you. In your intro, you sound a little nervous, and not comfortable as you speak. I guess that would be my first suggestion is to get comfortable when you record. I need to congratulate you first, for taking a thought ("Gee, I would sure love to do a SW radio show") to action. That is a huge accomplishment. Now, the fun and tough part begins. Your project needs to finds it "voice" or "look (for lack of a better term)". This is a good group here on the boards to cheer you on, as well as direct you onto excellence in what you do. So, from one Roy D. Mercer fan to another "Keep going, or I'll have to just come down there and woop your gol' dang ***".
Thanks for the greeting! Yeah, at first it was tough to hear criticisms of this little show, but I quickly realized that people are getting the benefit of a rather dispassionate view and that I had been working on it for six months or so, and was probably a bit too close to it. I can see some inherent flaws now in Episode I, and hopefully I'll at least kick SOME of them out when Episode II airs in a couple of months.
I'd LOVE a co-host, preferably female, but I don't know of anybody in my local area who would be interested in this kind of thing. But should that ever change, you guys will be the second to know. I'll be the first. heheheh
And as far as ol' Roy D goes, "well how big a' boy are ya?"
