View Full Version : Remember The 80's

My wife and I were watching We Love the 80's on VH1 last night. This had probably been on a million times before but this is the first time we ever saw it. We saw some of the 1983 episode and some of the 1984 episode. It really brought back some memories. I'm 26 so the 1980's was the decade of my youth. I know some of you younger folks don't remember the 80's or weren't born yet. But for those who were, please share some of the things that you remember were popular in the 80's. That TV program brought back some great memories and I hope this thread will bring back a few more.

I'll start with something I saw on the show last night. I had not heard these three words spoken in at least 15 years... WACKY WALL WALKERS. For those who don't remember these simple toys, they each resembled an octopus. They were small, rubbery, and kind of sticky. You could get them in cereal boxes, fling 'em against walls and watch them crawl down. Simple in design and purpose, but great fun anyway!

So what else was cool in the 80's?

RollaFett

One word- Transformers

what about Star Blazers?
Astro Boy
Robotech
Inspector Gadget
Dr Who

I like the fact that all the video and computer games you'd spend hours at an arcade playing, are now all available in the single download

even entire cartoon series are available for download

I graduated from high school in 1985 so I spent most of my youth in the 80's. Yes, I actually did wear leg warmers. No, I did not talk like a valley girl, like fer sure, gag me with a spoon.

One of my favorite TV shows was Airwolf with Jan Michael Vincent.

Great posts everyone. I especially enjoyed the one about the slap bracelets. I hadn't thought about those in a LONG time.

Oh yes the eighties, great times, crappy music, great t.v. shows (The Incredible Hulk, Quantum Leap), some of the best movies ever (Back to the Future, Indiana Jones, The Empire Strikes Back, of course as Golla Fett mentioned, the First Die Hard Movie).............toys.............expecially Transformers and Heman.

Also used to watch a show called Go-bots, there was like a transforming motorcycle, a police car, a helicopter, I don't remember much of it, it wasn't as good as Transformers, but so-so.

I used to have these robotic dinosaurs, and I can't remember the name of them for the life in me. Some help please.

Rob
01-03-2003, 06:19 PM
I watched all of them. It got kinda lame towards the late 80's but it was funny as hell.

For some odd reason I don't remember seeing clips of Debbie Gibson or Tiffany - who were the Britney/Christina's of the 80s, and I didn't see any NKOTB or New Edition.

Aside from that it was great. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

The only robotic dinosaurs I ever heard of is the Dinobots (Grimlock, Swoop..and...err....the umm...other three) The Grimlock of today is a frickin Crane...how they went from a T-Rex to a damn construction vehicle I'll never figure out!

And as for music, I loved it. "We're Not Gonna Take It is prolly one of the best songs ever made...I mean it's like All in the Family...Relevent then and now.

And I think the Hulk TV show was late 70's

That's it. I don't remember the names, but there was also a triceratops and apotosaurus, had all but Swoop, if I remember correctly, they came with little action figures to ride them, at least the T-rex did.
_____________________________________________

Yea Hulk was late 70's, but it ran into the 80's if I remember correctly.

Oh yeah and how could I forget Max Headroom!!?!

Whisper
01-03-2003, 07:10 PM
There was a T-Rex(Grimlock, Third in command of the Autobots in the Comics, built in the Cartoon, originally a different line in Japan, along with Shockwave), a Pterodactyl (Swoop), Apatosaur (uuh Sledge?), Triceratops (forgot), and a Stegosaur(Slag).

These were part of the Transformers though.

Darth Vegas
01-03-2003, 07:20 PM
Yeah, you got me confused, I was talking about something different, these weren't Transformers, thought the name Swoop sounded familiar, opps.

No these were sorta like Kinex, you had to put them together, they had lights, they moved. Their were 5 of them I believe, the T-rex being the biggest set, I'll have to search the net, find a pic.

Darth Whaler
01-03-2003, 09:48 PM
Thanks for the info JediBendu, I'll have to check that out!

The Triceratops in Transformers was Slag I believe.

What a great toy/show along with Go-Bots. I can still rattle off a ton of Go-bot names: Leader 1, Cy-kill, Crasher, Scooter, Turbo, Ranger, Screwhead, Crane Brain...the list goes on. Ahhh...those were the days.

I was born in '84, but you can tell I was an 80's infant by the toys we have in our attic (Care Bears, Rainbow Bright, etc. (NOT MINE, I HAVE TWO SISTERS!!))

When I was between the ages of 4-5, I was OBSESSED with Ghostbusters and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Man, those were the days.

Personally, I like 80's music. It's crap, but some of it's kinda catchy, and you can laugh at it at the same time.

Oh, and I really like the Deloreans, although most of them are poorly built.

RollaFett
01-05-2003, 09:07 PM
Deloreans. Heh, heh...brings up yet another 80's staple: "Back to the Future"
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, huh? Do you mean the original comics? Now they were cool.
I still like a lot of 80's music. Five words: Huey Lewis and the News.

You think they were just Dino-Bots from Transformers? I had a few of those.

I'm I the only one that remembers the cartoon, "Turbo Teen"? He would turn into a corvette when he ate something hot and would turn back into a teen when he had something cold. Remember?

A Turbo Teen fansite (http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Interview/4199/TurboTeenWebSite.html).

I also remember He-Man, She-Ra, M.A.S.K., G.I. Joe, Transformers, The Smurfs, STAR WARS!!!, E.T., the Atari, Nintento, and loads of other cool stuff! The eighties was my favorite decade. Sometimes I wish I was still a kid with no responsibilities.

Yeah, they were great, but they were not like most 80's band, they weren't into all that synthesiser crap. That's what was terrible about most 80's music.

How about some of the really awful flicks from the eighties? Flashdance, Footloose, there more, I am the only one that completely hates those movies? Please tell me I'm not alone they're terrible!!

Who in the hell (referring to Kevin Bacon in Footloose) get's really pissed off, so to vent their anger they dance, a really gay dance? Just pure crap.

I don't think so. They were all silver colored, you could see all their hardware. They all had red light-up eyes, and these people that drove them. I don't think they were all that popular but most of my friends and I collected them.

Ahh the eighties, yes yes, I remember them well. I remember my He-man figure trouncing my pal Kelly's insignificant She-ra figure! Kelly tried to claim that She-ra's silly flying horse Swiftwind would beat Battlekat in afight. HA! As if, and if she reads this, Kelly, You know you were wrong. HA!

I also indulged in my love of the kids from 'Fame' during that time and also often danced around my dad's reel to reel player listening to his scratchy recordings of the Eurythmics. Wow! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif

No. Actually, I meant the cartoon series and the movie.

Ugh. If you like comics, you should try to find some old issues of it, that was a really cool comic.

I may have only spent 44 days in the 80s, but every day I wish I was born 20 years earlier so I coul've seen them. This had to be one of the greatest decades for music, and in my own, retarded opinion, one of the best for clothing. I get all my mom and grandma's hand-me-down clothes and the majority of them are from the 80s, so I've taken quite a liking to them. I know... I'm a dork. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif

Good grief...I wish I could go back to visit, but not to stay. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif My best friend and I have conversations all the time of "Do you remember this...?". She reminded me of one thing I had forgotten about were the faded jeans with the slit in the back of the ankle that had the little denim bows covering them. Well the girl's jeans anyway obiously, ha. And I had a ton of friendship bracelets on my arms...I had one that took me forever to make. I made my best friend and myself one and I thought they were just so cool. I also crimped my hair a lot there for awhile...Oh and did anyone else have a pocket rocker or laser tag game? I actually kept all that stuff and still have my Colecovision and atari video game systems and games. Everything still works too. I love my old video games but unfortunately I can never get anyone to set it up for me on my modern TV. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/banghead.gif I don't know what I will do with all that. To make you feel old.....

This is sad, but true... Are you feeling old? If not, consider this:

The people who are starting college this fall across the nationwere born
in 1980's.
They have no meaningful recollection of the Reagan era.
They were prepubescent when the Persian Gulf War was waged.
Black Monday 1987 is as significant to them as the GreatDepression.
Their lifetime has always included AIDS.
Atari predates them, as do vinyl Albums.
The expression "you sound like a broken record" means nothing to them.
They may have heard of an 8-track, but chances are they probably have never actually seen or heard one.
As far as they know, stamps have always cost about 32 cents.
They have always had an answering machine.
Most have never seen a TV set with only 13 channels.
They were born the year that Walkmen were introduced by Sony.
They have no idea when or why Jordache jeans were cool.
They never took A swim and thought about Jaws.
They have no idea what "and my name, is Charlie. They work for me,"means.
They don't know that "8-6-7-5-3-0-9" is Jenny's phone number.
They don't know who Mork was or where he was from.
They never heard the term "Where's the beef?". Do you feel old now?

I am a child of the 70's and 80's. That is what I prefer to be called. The 90's can do without me. Grunge isn't here to stay, fashion is fickle and "Generation X" is a myth created by some over-40 writer trying to figure out why people wear flannel in the summer.

When I got home from school, I played Atari 2600. I spent hours playing Pitfall or Combat or Breakout or Dodge'em Cars or Frogger. I never did beat Asteroids. Then I watched "Scooby Doo." Daphne was a Goddess, and I thought Shaggy was smoking something synthetic in the back of the mystery machine.

I HATED SCRAPPY. I would sleep over at friends' houses on the weekends.
We played army with G.I. Joe figures, and I set up galactic wars between Autobots and Decepticons.

We never beat Rubik's cube, unless you count taking off the stickers. I got up on Saturday mornings at 6 a.m. to watch bad Hanna-Barbera cartoons like "Captain Caveman," and "SpaceGhost." In between I would watch "School House Rock." ("Conjunction junction, what's your function?!")

On Friday Night Daisy Duke was my future wife. I was going to own the General Lee and shoot dynamite arrows out the back. Why did they weld the doors shut?

Did your dad turn from mild-mannered Bill Bixby into "The Incredible Hulk" when he got upset?

At the movies the Nerds got revenge on the AlphaBetas by teaming up with the Omega Mu's. I watched Indiana Jones save the Ark of the Covenant, and wondered what Yoda meant when he said, "No, there is another."

Ronald Reagan was cool. My family took summer vacations to South Florida and collected "Muppet Movie" glasses along the way. (We had the whole set.) At the hotel we found creative uses for Connect Four pieces like throwing them in that big air conditioning unit.

I listened to John Cougar Mellencamp sing about Little Pink Houses for Jack and Diane. I was bewildered by Boy George and the colors of his dreams, red, gold and green. I was a "Wild Boy," Duran Duran. MTV actually played MUSIC videos.

Nickelodeon played "You can't Do That On Television" and "Dangermouse".
Does anyone remember the Banana Splits?"

I drank Dr. Pepper. "I'm a Pepper, you're a Pepper, wouldn't you like to be a Pepper too?" Shasta was for losers. TAB was a laboratory accident. Capri Sun was a social statement. Orange Juice wasn't just for breakfast anymore. My mom put a thousand Little Debbie Snack Cakes in my Charlie Brown lunchbox and filled my Snoopy Thermos with Grape Kool-Aid. I got two thousand cheese and cracker snack packs. I went to school and had recess. I went to the same classes everyday.
Some weird guy from the 8th grade always won the science fair with the working hydro-electric plant that leaked on my project about music and plants. Field day was bigger than Christmas, but it always seemed to rain just enough to make everybody miserable.

Rubber band fights were cool. A substitute teacher was a marked woman. Nobody deserved that. I went to Cub Scouts. I got my arrow-of-light, but never managed to win the Pinewood Derby. I got almost every skill award but don't remember ever doing anything.

The world stopped when the Challenger exploded.

Half of your friend's parents got divorced. People did not just say "no" to drugs. AIDS started, but you knew more people who had a grandparent die from cancer. Somebody in your school died before they graduated.

We are the ones who played with Lego Building Blocks when they were just building blocks and gave Malibu Barbie crewcuts with safety scissors that never really cut. Big wheels and bicycles with streamers were the way to go, and sidewalk chalk was all you needed to build a city.

Imagination was the key. It made the Ewok Treehouse big enough for you
to be Luke. And the kitchen table and that old sheet, dark enough to be a
tent in the forest. Your world was the backyard and it was all you needed.

With your pink portable tape player, Debbie Gibson sang back up to you and everyone wanted a skirt like the Material Girl and a glove like Michael Jackson's. Today, we are the ones who sing along with Bruce Springsteen and The Bangles perfectly and have no idea why.

We recite lines with Ghostbusters and still look to the Goonies for a great adventure. We flip through T.V. stations and stop at the A-Team and Knight Rider and Fame, and laugh with The Cosby Show and Family Ties and Punky Brewster and "What you talkin' bout Willis?" We hold strong affections for The Muppets and why did they take the Smurfs off of the air? After school specials were about cigarettes and step-families.

The Polka Dot Door was nothing like Barney, and aren't the Power Rangers just Voltron reincarnated? We are the ones who read Nancy Drew, The Hardy Boys, The Bobbsey Twins, Beverly Cleary, and Judy Blume. Friendship bracelets were ties you couldn't break and friendship pins went on shoes - preferably hightop velcro Reebok. And pegged jeans were in, as were unit belts and layered socks and jean jackets and JAMS and charm necklaces and side pony tails and just tails. Rave was a girl's best friend; braces with colored rubberbands made you rad. The backdoor was always open and Mom served only red kool-aid to the neighborhood kids. YOU NEVER drank the New Coke. Entertainment was cheap and lasted for hours. All you needed to be a princess was high heels and an apron; the Sit'n'Spin always made you dizzy but never made you stop; Pogoballs were dangerous weapons and Chinese Jump Ropes never failed to trip someone.

In your underoos you were Wonder Woman, Spider Man or Robin in your treehouse you were king. Star Wars was not only a movie.

Did you ever play in a bomb shelter? We didn't start the fire Billy Joel.

We had neighborhoods where in the day we could play kick-the-can, "guns" and all of the things that made us Grow up. There was always that one field" that could be used for either baseball, football, homerun derby, or just a place to hang out. That was my field of dreams Mr. Costner. At night we would play flashlight tag. Just like we could trick-or-treat at night without the fear of being shot and killed. Just like our guns had caps or "lasers". If we didn't have the Jessie James guns we could just get a rock and smash the caps on the ground! We loved those orange race tracks...that was until our mother realized she could smack us with them. We too collected football and baseball cards but it was because we wanted to be the first in the neighborhood to have the "complete" set.

In our neighborhoods we played with He-man and Skelator. Going to get a Happy Meal on Saturday with dad or mom was worth waiting the other six days of the week. No, we are the furthest thing from a lost generation. Does-going to arcades on Saturday, getting carpooled to football with your best friend, eating fruit roll-ups, having birthday parties at McDonalds, Chuck-E-Cheese's, Godfather's pizza or Noble Romans where you could make your own pizza-express mean you are lost? How many people melted their army >figures that were given to them by their parents? Was Green Lantern the Coolest Super Hero or Aquaman? "Wonder twin powers activate!"

How's about coming home at night and separating your Halloween candy into: The cool stuff, the homemade stuff, and the pennies... how's about the candy that came in that awful orange and black wax paper? Did you ever try it? Do you remember the one house that had a sign in the candy bowl that said, "Take One." How many did you take if you liked it? Were you desperate one year and as a teenager you trick-or-treated?

Our generation had character and heart. We played with real baseballs and "Putt putt for the fun-of-it." "Hey, my mom will take us if your mom picks up!" Could you ever really beat Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom...? Did you have sliced oranges or grapes for your half-time treat? How about the hot dog and coke after each football and baseball games? Star Crunches? Whippy Dip? Twinkies? Ho-ho's?
This is what WE are all about!

I'm sorry but the guy who started this thread didn't turn 10 until 1986, the "80's" as we think of it when we use that term were not his youth, his youth was more like that transitional stage from 88 to 92.
I think people currently under the age of 30 should not be allowed to claim the 80s as their decade, lol.

I have a sister who is 37, a brother who is 35 and another brother who is 33, now they can claim the 80s. They were in high school through the thick of it, I think they are more qualified than Darth Waler he didn't even turn 10 until 1986.

Personally all I remember from the 80s is I saw Reagan on TV speaking as president, but that's a very blurry image. I remember the wall coming down, and didn't a star go nova sometime in the mid or late 80s (which means in actuality it happened thousands or even millions of years ago lol) or is that my imagination? you could see the particular star faintly in the daytime? maybe I'm wrong but for some reason that sounds familar.

When I was in high school 1998-2002 there was a fad for some of the kids who wanted to be "different" whateverthehell that means to try and copy 80's styles. What was amusing is they either got it completely wrong or they did it in absolute extremes of stereotypes. But since my siblings are insanely older than me I was the only one who understood just how wrong these kids were lol.

Ferris Bueler's Day Off makes it into my top 50 movies of all time list LOL.

And let's not forget, ESB and ROTJ were the 80s! And so was all of Indy!

Well I was around for the last 5 years of that decade and I remember much of those years quite well.

But the 90's was my decade. Do you remember the 90's?

Well do ya'?

It was that decade with music from the likes of M.C. Hammer, Vanilla Ice, Kris Kross, Pearl Jam, Metallica, and Nirvana. Arsenio Hall was beating Carson at the ratings, Super Nintendo was considered advanced technology, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the smaller GI-Joes were super popular (although both carried over from the 80's they were more popular in the 90's), they made alot of movies based on Saturday Night Live skits (most notably Coneheads and Wayne's World), and there was a long string of crappy Jean Claude Van-Damme and Steven Segal movies. There were cool cartoons like Tale Spin and Darkwing Duck, and there were crappy cartoons like Captain Planet.

Man those were the good ole days.

TK you remember less of the 80s than I do alright? Don't be silly.

And Metallica was just as popular in the 80s as they were in the 90s.

And TK you didn't hit 10 years old until 1995, "your decade" is more like this current first ten years of the 21st century...

Being born in 1980 would you call the 80s my youth?

Do we really need to argue about some claiming a decade as their own?

The 80s shaped me regardless of how much I remember about it. I spent the first nine years of my life in the 80s. While I don't remember things as clearly as older people, I can feel the 80s in many things I do. Anyways...

Whoa, chill out man, this isn't a contest. But just for your information I do remember quite a bit more than this:

Personally all I remember from the 80s is I saw Reagan on TV speaking as president, but that's a very blurry image.
Best not to assume such things, especially about people you don't even know.
