View Full Version : What in SW Stole Your Heart?

I always remember watching the OT with my father when I was a little kid. Of course, I really didn't know what was going on but it was always a load of fun. I saw Ep. 1 and 2 and thought they were really cool, but never gave them a lot of thought. Well, when I bought 1 and 2 on DVD, it was like a whole new experience. I had never seriously sat down and gave the movies any critical analysis. I kept saying to myself, 'why hadn't I seen this before!' Now I love SW, as opposed to just liking it whenever I happened to see it. I am more of a movie guy myself. I haven't gotten into the toys and t-shirts side of SW fandom, but I have a mild addiction to the Galactic Senate and I do not wish to go through rehab! So, what is your personal story? Are you a fairly new fan, like me, or are you a die-hard, been there since '77, got all the action figures kind of fan? Discuss!

The first time I saw Star Wars was(shame for me) about 3 years ago.Until then, all the stuff about SW was making me nuts!Everywhere I looked:SW!
They were making promo's on TV for A New Hope & I decided to watch(thinking that at least I should watch before throw at it and that a so famous film couldn't be that bad).It was love at first sight!
ANd The Empire Strikes Back after that. That's not a movie;it's something much, much more...

Same with me. My Dad was the one who first showed me Star Wars. And until he and I are still top notch fans.

Well for me it was the first truly magical experience I can remember. Seeing ANH, ESB and ROTJ in the theaters when I was little and every friend of mine was into it, collecting the cards and the action figures and space ships...I still have my TIE fighter from when I got it for Christmas in 1983 I think it was, the kind where you press the button on the back and it makes completely non TIE fighter laser noises.
In the seventies my father used to leave me little snacks with a note saying they were from Darth Vader, you can tell who I was a fan of style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif. So you can say Star Wars has been a part of my life since I can remember.
Then after ROTJ left the theaters, I thought it was gone for good and then many years later Mr. Lucas brought the PT and they have made me even more of a Star Wars fan than ever before and they have made Star Wars into something even more brilliant than it was before.

I dont know why it is, but the element of anakin coming back to the good side made me get into it. eg. When luke surrenders himself to vader on the moon of Endor and you can tell in that scene that vader is disputing about the his desired path and when vader's helmet is taken off.

From the time I was 8 years old, I had the movies peace meal. At friends houses and such. There were small parts that always stuck with. I could never shake Yoda's quote "You must unlearn what you have learned." See even as a kid, I though alot about why people do what they do, and about people being in control of their own actions and stuff like that. It didn't make for a fun childhood....
But anyway when I was around 15 or so, a couple of buddies and I rented the OT and decided to watch all 3 of them together. I was very excited to really watch and digest these films. And as I sat there as a teen, and watched the poor special effects with no surround sound and only VHS quality, I began falling in love with every passing second.
I fell in love with the very simple ideology of star wars. Everyone has good and evil inside of them. And even if you make a pledge for good, you must struggle against evil with every decision you make. These decisions can effect many people, more than you think they will. And no matter how wise or bad the council is you receive, you have to make the choices yourself, and eventually deal with the concequnces of those choices.
Being a teenager, surrounded by people who had no concept of responsibilty and choice, I felt a little less lonely having my own thoughts communicated in a way that I was not yet capable of. My buddies never really got quite as into it as I became.
Now I am 28, and the new movies are causing me to love it even more. Because with Anakin, we see how much evil a person is capable of when they refuse to take responsibilty for their own choices. There are many truisms for life in SW, and I think choice is always at the center of it.
That is why I loved it then,
And that is why I love it now.

I can't remember the first time I saw the movies. Any one of them. My brothers and sister were young when the came out and they loved to watch them, so I was constantly bombarded by it as a child. I always knew that Luke and Leia were twins and that Vader was their father. But I love them all the same.
Thats partly why I've avoided spoilers as much as possible with Prequals. I've never had the chance to watch s Star Wars film and not know what is going to happen, so I have no intention of ruining the experience.

For one, I'm a total geek when it comes to science and Star Wars was my first taste of sciene fiction... I was basically just blown away at first by the biggness of it all, I mean, the falcon was a piece of junk? It looked pretty complex and hugemongous to me. Also the alien life and geology of all the planets. The Force blew me away, too. It was just all so big and there was so much to learn about it. I'd say my heart was stolen away not really by the characters but more their surroundings. I'm such an intellectual geek. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif

the thing that got me into star wars was the action figures. i thought they looked cool
from there, i got the movies, and from the opening crawl i was hooked beyond belief. to this day, the star destroyer flying overhead boggles my mind, even though there's bigger and badder things in the new movies
overall, i'd say the visuals of the movie kept me going. it's just such an incredible visual experience, watching all these ships, lightsabers, just everything going on. it helped shape my future, and i won't forget it

Well, as a 27 year-old, SW has pretty much always been a part of my life. The movies were what I watched on weekends, and the toys were what my brother and I played with growing up. I can as easily imagine my life without Star Wars as I can imagine it without a family member. It's just something that has always been there.
I guess we could ask why it has kept me entranced all this time. Despite how cool the space battle over Endor was, or how cool the Maul/Qui-gon/Obi duel was, it has to ultimately come down to good vs. evil. In a world of greys, very strong symbols of good & evil, black & white, are amazing, and Star Wars did it better than anyone else.
So, I'm still excited after all these years, I'm psyched about EPIII, and I'm here posting my first post. So how 'bout that?

What drew me to the movies was curiousity as a child with these strange questions.
"Why does Leia wear her hair like that?" "What's that scary thing dressed in all black?" "What is that big hairy scary doggie thing?"
I love the adventure, the fantasy in being in another galaxy, the characters, the music, and the story is ioverall is wonderful to watch.

The binary sunset scene on Tatooine...yeah the movies were set in a galaxy far, far away, but that image of Luke, frustrated and bored and desperate for adventure, could've come out of my own life. Even at 10 years old when I first saw the movies over a decade ago, I could identify with Luke, and ever after, Star Wars has kept its hold on me.
When I went to go see ROTS the last time, I started sobbing uncontrollably at the last image of the movie, because it was patterned after the original sunset scene, and I realized that the scene meant as much, if not more to me, than it did back then.

I remember we watched Empire Strikes Back at one of my friends birthday parties back in 1994 or 95 and I was bored out of my mind. When the special editions came out my dad took me to ANH and ESB. I then got the original trilogy originals on video and then started reading the Thrawn trilogy in third grade! Tim Zahn hooked me.
I became a crazy fan and couldn't wait for TPM and I fell in love with the old republic and expanded universe and Padme. Padme really turned it on in AOTC and ROTS.
Of course the lightsabers, starfighters, and John Williams excellent score hooked me too. I became hooked while playing X-Wing and Dark Forces at about the same time the Special Edition came out!

Lucas drew everything from your classic literature and basic mythology. The hero, the villian, the princess, the pirate/swashbuckler, the wise wizard, the comedy relief, and the age old struggle between good and evil with good being victorious in the end and everyone living happily ever after.
Well, until the next evil crisis comes along anyway.

I was 6 1/2 in 1977. The music stuck with me. I immediately got sucked into the toys. As far as the story--it just grew me with as I did. 9 1/2 when ESB came out and the added depth to the stroy was overwhelming. 12 1/2 when RoTJ came out and the resolution was incredible. It opened up further and further at just the times when I could appreciate most of their value.
Then it continued when I was in college with the Expanded Universe and then the Prequel Trilogy.
Now I get to start sharing the saga with my six-year-old boy this summer. We have waited since he has a very tender heart about things. I can't wait.
The music still was the clincher, but the whole thing has been such a part of my life--I can't even seem to put it into words.

For me the Jedi (+The Force and lightsabers) make the movies cool.
That's one thing that makes the PT better than the OT IMO
In the OT, there are 4 force-users, and that's all. In the PT there are so many Jedi and different force powers...
The first movie I saw was TPM. Then the OT. ANH, ESB and ROTJ are just not spectacular to me, sorry.
What stole my heart? The Jedi and the great battles in the PT
I'm not so much die hard 77 fan (mainly cos it was 13 years before I was born style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif ) but I am a 97 fan when they came out in 97 for the special edition i was 7 so that hooked me.
Although I am 14 I can remember going to see Star Wars in the Cinema when I was 7, So I consider myself more Ot Generation ( in the terms of star wars ) The PT came after the excitement of the OT for me

My grandfather passed on his love for movies to me. He was a member of the press and took me to see the premiere of SW in 1977. I was 11 years old. For the first time I was transported away from part of a very stinky childhood. Going to see my grandparents were the true good memories for me. The escape to a galaxy far far away is what drew me in, then the force and lightsabers.
Now 28 years later, my obsession has only grown deeper. When I die I either want my ashes in space or spread over skywalker ranch.

I´ve always been a fan. I was a little young to catch ANH in the cinema but my slightly older brother and I would always watch a video of it on Saturday mornings. After that SW became part of my life. I can honestly say that I was the only girl in my school who had SW figures (I think they´re stashed in my ex´s parents loft at the moment).
Time passed, everything died down. I watched the re-releases of the OT I went to see TPM and AotC but it was seeing ROTS that brought it all together and made me back into a fan.

TESB of the 1977 version captures me into the SW galaxy. I never had a chance to see the entire OT in the cinemas when it was rereleased in 1997 (I was 9 then). My friend just invited me to see the Star Wars movie he had, and I have no idea of what the Star Wars story was dealing with back then. I knew I have seen ROTJ when I was a little child in a local TV network, but I was too little to understand what was really going on. My friend has the 1977 edition, complete with Luke and Leia kiss scene, the bacta removal scene, etc. The story and its elements --- the drama, the action, the effects (the effects were great back then) --- is really the best, and even I belong to the PT generation, TESB still my top movie. So I disagree with those people who disliked the OT because the PT's effects was better than the originals. Without the OT the great SW saga would not be told.

The battles. The starfighters, cruisers, ground units, it was all so amazing, so well done. Back in the late 80's/early 90's I watched the original trilogy recorded off of my uncles HBO on to Betamax. As a kid, I wanted to be Wedge, or Zev, or Biggs, heck, even Dack (basically anyone except for Jek Porkins, what a moron) and fly around shooting things up. I had dozens of models, Micro Machines, AMT, I made my own Lego versions of all of the Rebellion's fighters (I'm still very proud of my B-Wing, the wings folded and the cockpit rotated. Played with them every day after school. Great memories, before the dark times, before th prequals (joke).
I still believe there isn't a more entertaining or well done battle in all of Star Wars than Hoth.

Sitting in a theater at age 8, with my brothers, and watching Lord Vader's Star Destroyer roar through space was unbelievable. Also, Princess Leia was the tomboy of all tomboys.

When I was a kid, and watching the final battle between Vader, Palps and Luke and seeing Luke give into anger and then stop.
I used to love playing with my star wars toys. I can remember freezing Han and Leia in water when Vader use to capture them.

At first, it was the Battle of Yavin. That made Star Wars interesting and exciting to me...but what hooked me was Darth Vader and his story. And now having the total story with the finish of the Prequels, it's his story and the story of him and his family that will continue to keep me interested in these films...

Well I was only 1 years old when ROTJ came out and my mother and aunt took me to go see it and they always read the opening scrolls and subtitles for me...I admit I was always into Darth Vader and Palpatine ever since I got into Star Wars..I admit I used to be frightned by Jabba the Hutt and Yoda when I was little.
My mother even video taped all of the OT movies on blank tapes for me back in the day including the Ewok movies as well.

Binary Sunset.
I think for me it would be Luke in A New Hope wanting to get out of Tatooine in search of a better life. Many who live in rural or even inner city areas probably can identify with Luke no matter what their heritage. I know I did.

Well for someone like me who was big into his own head - trippin' into fantasy every chance he could take, it was perfect. I was seven. In the 70's crap, you just didn't see movies like Star Wars. Didn't happen. I was a boy from the desert, first off. I lived in Vegas, had just moved to Texas, land of swamps. I had an older cousin who was kinda like my big brother. I saw this movie, and could instantly relate with Luke Skywalker. I was a kid, tired of always being told what to do. Here was Luke, who reminded me of my cousin and who I wanted to be (because of course I idolized my cousin), in the desert, the kind of desert I WISH I could have explored... and he was yearning for freedom and adventure too. And boy was the stage set! HUGE starships! Blaster bolts EVERYWHERE! The DEATH STAR! C'mon? What could be cooler than the Death Star? Welll, that was of course The FORCE baby. This wasn't just aliens. This wasn't just more special effects than I'd ever seen, period. This wasn't just a whole new world. This was also a magical place. And Luke was off to save the princess! Don't get me wrong, I loved the entire cast, the entire feel, of the movie. It was perfect. And I was the perfect age, and I hadn't been jaded by other movies with better special effects.
Ah, sweet memories.

That's interesting. I don't know why I start to watch and like Star Wars... And I start about three months ago, so I would have to remember it!
But why I keep watching it and why I now really love it? Because it has very great story: it's always interesting, well sophisticated and just the best idea I've ever known!

For me it was:
1. The Star Destroyer chasing Tantive IV
2. The run-on and destruction of the Death Star
3. Battle of Hoth - The AT-AT's kind of sealed the deal :omg:
4. Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker battle in cloud city and the 'I Am Your Father!' confession. I can't really tell you how many times I kept asking my parent for re-assurance that Vader was lying, and it was really Obi-Wan Kenobi :ohhlala:
5. The Sarlac Pitt Escape - I still get goosebumps when Luke gives R2 that salute, springs off the board, flips and ignites his lightsabre - all to that awesome John Williams music
6. That fantastic Finale in Jedi - I love the whole pacing of all three climaxes, between shutting down the shield generator on Endor, the attack on the Death Star and Luke's final battle with Darth Vader :duel: I was crying in the cinema when I thought Luke was going to die at the hands of the Emperor!

Well what won my heart at first when I was little was seeing Luke Skywalker yearning to be away looking into the binary sunset, and Darth Vader and the Death Star and the mystery of what happened during the Old Republic and the Clone Wars and where did Darth Vader came from. And I fell in love with Princess Leia.
And then came the Prequels and they made me love Star Wars even more, they made me a much bigger fan then I was even as a kid, which is saying something. My friends and I were crazy Star Wars collectors. I had all the original Star Wars collector cards and had tons of Star Wars toys, my favorite being the 12' Darth Vader and my TIE fighter.

First time I saw starwars was on a vacation in the lovely island of Cyprus. I was about 11 years old than. Me and my family left the hotel for shopping and I saw a family watching a movie in their veranda. It was july and really hot, so this family was watching the movie under the shade of the trees in their garden.
My parents were arguing about the price of a strgange chandelier and that was when I first net Vader. It was the duel scene in the second death star. :duel: I was fascinated. All I coud watch was 2 or 3 minutes, because my father couldn't resist my mother adn bought the chandelier and we left.:(
I didn't even know the name of the movie or how I could find it. I told it to my father that night and he promised to rent the VHS when we returned. I thought, he forgot it and I was very sorry. But on my birthday (in september) he gave me all 3 movies as a gift. :w00t:
Out of everyone in the movie, I was fascinated with Han and his ship. Those were lovely days.
So this is my story of how I met Star Wars...

The first when I got interested in Star Wars was when I was 9 years old.
One day me and my brother were bored. And he dissuaded to tell me a story of one move he sow one day. He said it was called "Star Wars" (he sow that move 16 years ago, he told the story to 4 years ago). Well basically he told me a summary of Star Wars A New Hope and I loved it. Two weeks later I sow Star Wars ANH on TV, and I loved it.
So that was it.
and by the way I sow the moves in this order:
1)ANH
2)ROTJ (that's my favorite)
3)AOTC
4)TPM
5)ESB
6)ROTS

Another part that stole my heart is the ability to discover what happens before and after the movies by means of the EU and your own imagination, where the posibilities are endless.

When I was younger I watched the OT at family gatherings and used it as destraction when I had the chicken pox. I remember that I was sort of raised with it, so it was normal. When I saw AOTC in theaters it was still kind of the same way. I guess after that I took a real interest in SW and since then I've enjoyed it more and more.
As far as what stole my heart, I guess the sort of completely out-of-the-ordinary of SW is one reason why it's so special.

Leia's slave outfit in Return of the Jedi. It was my favorite movie when I was six years old, and Princess Leia was my favorite character. I would put on my bikini and stuff a blanket in the back of it and pretend I was her. Good times, good times.

That is such a hard question to answer. Is it the enormity of the GFFA, is it the fantastic characters and their interactions, the storylines, all the species of alien, the fact it is myth-like, Padme in that white suit, the whole SW experience including EU and collecting?
I think Brydn was right, pretty much everything. :satisfied: :superhappy:  :yeah:

Well, isn't this a nice older thread.
Let's see, I was pretty young so pretty much everything enthralled me, originally. But I loved the concept of a lightsaber, Vader was a villain that both scared and intrigued me, I thought Han Solo was the coolest mo-fo ever, and I will always dig the music. Even the incidental stuff is awesome.
Then as I got a little older, I grew to love Wedge Antilles as a character (the living embodiment of the enduring Rebellion in character form, really), and the X-Wing. God I wore out my copy of X-Wing vs TIE Fighter back in the day.

I've seen SW for the first time when I was 12 years old. I remember I got very bad VCR copy with German dubbing and Polish reader at the same time. It was very hard to watch but they stole my heart from the start.
I was always sci-fi fan and I guess I like the idea of people living on different planets in the galaxy, different species co habitating together, fantastic technology, good vs evil, heroes, villains, a bit or romance and complicated emotions... and Star Wars has it all. I also find jedi/sith believes, Force and how to use it very interesting.
All this combined and there was no way I could not be hooked. :like:

The Storm Troopers. I've loved them from the very first time I saw them blast through the Tanative Five hull. And Up until the attack on the Jedi Temple.
There uniforms are so awesome, especially the Clone Troopers. Although those different colored markings give away there positions.

I had a pretty rough childhood and Star Wars was something that was always there to inspire me.My father took me to them all in the cinema although I have only memories of images and wowness fron ANH as I was like four so my first real clear memories are from ESB in the cinema which just blew me away.To this day the things that initially blew me away continue to do so.The direct lines between good and evil, the struggle of a brave few against a dark and overwhelming force, courage and bravery, the sound of a lightsaber igniting, stormtroopers,Vader breathing and James Earl Jones, the whole story and eventual redemption of Anakin through the love and sacrifice of his son which inspires even more now that I have two sons of my own.Luke was,is and will continue to be one of my absolute heroes and I try to be more like him every day in my life.Ah hell I could go on for hours but you get the point!
