A 35-year-old Frenchwoman became both bride and widow when she married her dead boyfriend, in an exchange of vows that required authorisation from the French president.
The ceremony was performed at Nice City Hall on the French Riviera.
The deceased groom, a former policeman identified as Eric, was not present at the ceremony. He was killed by a drunk driver in September 2002.
Demichel told LCI television she was fully aware that "it could seem shocking to marry someone who is dead", but said that her fiance's absence from her life had not dimmed her feelings for him.
According to French law, a marriage between a living person and a dead person can take place as long as preliminary civic formalities have been completed that show the couple had planned to marry. Before the ceremony can take place, it must be approved by the French president.

LAGOS, Nigeria (Reuters) - Four Nigerian men were charged with plucking out the eyes of a 13-year-old schoolboy for use in witchcraft, the state news agency reported Tuesday.
They face charges ranging from criminal conspiracy to grievous bodily harm and permanent disfigurement for the attack on the boy, who was taken to hospital in the northeastern state of Bauchi.
Police suspect the attack was commissioned by one of the defendants to make a charm believed to make people invisible.
The case will be heard by an Islamic court in Bauchi on February 18, the News Agency of Nigeria said.
If found guilty, the defendants could have their own eyes removed under the Islamic sharia code, the agency added.
Bauchi is one of 12 predominantly Muslim states in northern Nigeria which adopted sharia law five years ago.

DETROIT (AP) - Two police officers were killed Monday after they pulled over a pickup truck for a traffic violation, officials said.
Officer Jennifer Fettig, 26, was pronounced dead at a hospital. Her partner, Officer Matthew Bowens, 21, died earlier.
Police have a suspect in custody but have released few details. Investigators were trying to enhance video from a camera that was running in the officers' car at the time of the shootout.
The officers pulled over the truck and a person inside got out and began shooting, police Cmdr. Craig Schwartz said.
Bowens chased the shooter and they exchanged gunfire, Schwartz said. At least 22 empty shell-casings were found at the scene.

BERLIN (Reuters) - Teachers in a German school were treated in hospital after gobbling up an anonymously donated chocolate cake, unaware it was laced with hashish, authorities said on Thursday.
Some 10 teachers from the school in the northern town of Lueneburg were treated for nausea and dizziness after sharing a cake left at the door to their staff room, a police spokesman said.
"They thought it was food poisoning, but the doctors quickly recognized the problem," the spokesman said. "They showed all the classic signs of people under the influence of drugs."
The spokesman said the teachers had not suspected anything because it was customary for them to buy cakes from the schoolchildren as part of a fund-raising project.
Blood tests and a sample of an uneaten slice of cake revealed it had been doctored with hashish. The teachers were later discharged and police said they had not yet identified who was responsible for the prank.

DUBLIN (Reuters) - An elderly Irishwoman shared a room with her sister's corpse for up to a year and sometimes slept with it in the same bed, newspapers reported Tuesday.
Mary Ellen Lyons never told anyone that her sister Agnes had died, the reports said. Even their brother Michael, who lived in the same remote bungalow in rural western Ireland, did not know.
An inquest heard Monday that Agnes probably died in 2002 -- possibly in September -- at the age of 70.
However, her body was only discovered in August 2003 when Mary Ellen fell ill and had to be taken to hospital.
"I have tried to remember when Agnes died but I just can't remember," Mary Ellen said in a statement read out at the inquest. "I remember getting Christmas cards at Christmas 2002 but I cannot remember if Agnes was dead at the time."
The inquest heard the three siblings lived in "a world apart" and that the sisters were deeply religious.
After Agnes' death, Mary Ellen sometimes slept in the same double bed as the corpse and sometimes in the bathroom. Michael stayed in his own bedroom and the living room of the tiny house and never entered his sisters' room.
"There is no way that Michael would open the door of a woman's room," a neighbor told the inquest. "They wouldn't even watch the television if there was a woman on it. They were from a different era."

BEIJING - Chinese officials figure a 1,980-pound pig that died from lack of exercise has a shot at being named the biggest pig ever. And they plan to apply for a listing in the Guinness Book of Records, the government's news agency said Monday.
The pig, which was 8 feet 3 inches long, is already the heaviest ever reported in China, the official Xinhua News Agency said.
The beast had a girth of 7 feet, 3 inches and its tusks were 5 3/4 inches long when it died Feb. 5, the agency said. It cited the pig's keeper, Xu Changjin, a farmer in the northeastern province of Liaoning.
The pig lived to be 5 years old — considered long in China, where most pigs are slaughtered by age 3 — and was kept in a "nicely built sty," the report said.
But, "it had grown too big to move around," said Liu Mingyu, a professor at Liaoning University, who said it died from lack of exercise.
China's previous heaviest pig weighed in at 1,540 pounds, Liu said, in Xinhua's report.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>Man charged with molesting infant
Tuesday, March 2, 2004 Posted: 8:29 AM EST (1329 GMT)
SACRAMENTO, California (AP) -- A man was being held without bond on federal child pornography charges after agents on Monday said they seized images from his home showing him performing sex acts on a 2-month-old girl.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents said the girl is one of the youngest sexual assault victims they have ever encountered.
The suspect was arrested at his home Thursday after the agents said they found explicit video images showing him engaging in sex acts with the infant, who is now 8 months old.
The suspect is alleged to have distributed the images over the Internet, where they were recovered during a child pornography investigation in Detroit. The agents said they traced the images to his e-mail.
Authorities raided his El Dorado Hills home and seized computer equipment, a digital camera, and infant's clothing and bedding.
Larry M. Jeffs, 41, remains in the Sacramento County Jail, charged with producing and distributing child pornography. If convicted, he faces a maximum 50 years in prison.
The continuing Detroit investigation is part of the government's Operation Predator, which targets child sexual predators worldwide, including subscribers to Internet child pornography Web sites.
Since it began in July, the sweep has brought more than 2,000 arrests nationwide.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>Abdur-Raheem, an Army veteran, never traveled to the Lashkar camp, but the government claims he aided the conspiracy by using his military expertise to train others for holy war during paintball games played in the woods near Fredericksburg. But no, she didn't put it there, her friend did when she wouldn't let him keep it in his pocket when he came over. Although the whole thing does sound ridiculous. He put it in the oven for storage so she wouldn't see it, and left without it? And 2 weeks went by and he hadn't gone back to get his gun? What's the point of having a gun for protection if you're going to forget where you put it for 2 weeks?

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>Student suspended over SI swimsuit issue
Wednesday, February 25, 2004 Posted: 11:06 AM EST (1606 GMT)
BELPRE, Ohio (AP) -- A sixth-grader started serving a three-day suspension Tuesday because he refused a lesser punishment for bringing the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue to school, the school superintendent said.
Justin Reyes had the magazine in the gymnasium at Belpre Middle School before classes February 18, and Principal Kathy Garrison cited him for violating school policy on nonverbal harassment and possession of lewd or suggestive material, Superintendent Tim Swarr said.
Garrison ordered the 12-year-old boy to spend two days at an alternative school where students from several area districts are sent when they get into trouble.
But Swarr said Justin and his mother, Nicole Reyes, refused to accept the alternative school punishment, so the penalty was increased to three days of out-of-school suspension.
"Last time I checked, we were in charge of running the schools," Swarr said.
Nicole Reyes said the alternative school was too harsh a punishment.
"It's not like it was Hustler, Playboy or Penthouse," she said. "The punishment doesn't fit the crime."
Swarr said he had never seen SI's swimsuit edition before.
"I was shocked," he said. "It doesn't belong in public schools."
Belpre Middle School, about 90 miles southeast of Columbus, serves some 550 students in grades four through eight.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>On April 9, my mom and dad, Nick and Mary Yankovic, passed away in their home in Fallbrook, California. It was the result of a terrible accident – that morning they had started a fire in the fireplace with the flue closed, and were asphyxiated by carbon monoxide poisoning.
Suzanne called me that afternoon on the bus to give me the news, so that I would hear about it before the wire services picked it up.
Needless to say, I feel pretty much the way you would expect me to feel – shocked and devastated beyond words. I loved my parents so much, and this all still seems like a horrible nightmare that I can’t wake up from.
I want to thank my family, friends and fans for the incredible outpouring of love and support that they’ve shown me. It’s wonderful to know that there are so many people around the world who truly loved my parents, and also nice to know that I am not alone in my grief.
I take some small measure of comfort in knowing that they died peacefully, and that they never had to suffer through the pain and loneliness of living without each other. I'm also grateful that they both lived long enough to see me happily married to Suzanne, and particularly happy that they got to meet our beautiful baby daughter Nina. She filled their lives with so much joy this last year. Nina may be too young to remember playing with her grandparents when she gets older, but don’t worry, we’ll have some great videotape to show her.
Many people have wondered what’s going to happen with the tour. I briefly considered canceling some shows, but I ultimately decided that it would be better for me personally to continue working. Plus, I’ve heard from so many people over the years that my music has cheered them up in times of tragedy… well, I thought maybe my music would help me too.
So far, it has. Going up on stage in front of thousands of supportive fans is a cathartic and somewhat therapeutic experience for me right now. I don’t know if I can say that the concerts really take my mind off of the tragedy, but at least they give me a break from sobbing all the time.
Anyway, I have decided not to cancel any shows – the tour will continue as planned. However, I have decided to put a moratorium on all interviews and meet-and-greets for the time being – I just feel like I need some time alone right now.
The funeral will be a very small, intimate service with only the immediate family attending, so please, I ask that you respect our privacy. Just knowing that your thoughts are with us at this time is more than enough, but if you care to contribute anything, in lieu of flowers, Suzanne and I suggest a donation to the Natural Resources Defense Council in my parents’ name.
One thing I would like to ask everybody to do, though… please, go out and get carbon monoxide detectors for yourself and your loved ones. If my parents had had one in their home, there’s a very good chance that they would still be with us today.
In fairness to the memory of my mother, I should point out some errors that appeared in the press. Although she was starting to have a problem with short-term memory loss (she was taking medication for it), my mother was never diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.
As long as I’m pointing out errors that the press has made, it was my Aunt Dot who found my parents when she was bringing them lunch that day, as she routinely did (and not a group of relatives concerned that they “hadn’t heard from them in a while” – the family was close and caring and saw each other several times a day). Also, my aunts and uncles all live in separate houses (not together, as some articles implied), and for what it’s worth, I am not represented by the William Morris Agency either.
I don’t know how much else I can say about my parents that I haven’t already said in interviews over the years. Although I always found it a little uncomfortable, my dad talked a lot about death. He mentioned a few times that he was planning to go on a diet so that his “casket would be easier to carry.” I guess that’s where I got my sick sense of humor from. And he was always talking about how much he was looking forward to seeing his old army buddies again (in the next life). I sure hope they’re having a great reunion right now.
As unthinkable as this tragedy is to me, I just know that my mom and dad were very much at peace with the world and with their lives. And I guess I can take a small amount of comfort in that too.
Thank you all again for your overwhelming kindness and support. It means more to me than you can ever know.
Love,
Al

Oh I never meant to imply that it was a uniquely Australian thing... in fact, I'm not sure I came close... I've heard it here in the states too... my question regarding Australia had to do with her going so long without having a doctor handle it... which also could have happened in the states, but I just figured would be less likely in a socialized health care environment where an X-ray would be paid for.
It wasn't about that they were left in her... one pair of scissors left in someone per year after how many surgeries a year saving people's lives is a pretty decent record. Mistakes happen... and I said it was rare.

Tamale Chef Kills Friend, Cooks Him
MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - A Mexican cook killed his drinking buddy, cut up his body and boiled him in herbs, according to police who fear he may have been turning him into tamales.
Prosecutors said on Wednesday they had arrested Carlos Machuca, a tamale-maker, at his home in the western city of Morelia on Tuesday, after receiving an anonymous phone tip.
Officers found a man's mutilated corpse in the living room and body parts simmering in aluminum saucepans on the patio, state prosecutors told Reuters.
"We saw the flesh and the tamales, and our first impression was that he was making tamales with the flesh of the deceased, although it has yet to be confirmed," Lorena Cortes, a spokeswoman for Michoacan state prosecutors, said.
But she also told Reuters by telephone that Machuca, 56, may just have been trying to dispose of the body. Police say he stabbed the man through the heart in a fight after they had drunk together.
Tamales are made of packets of maize dough with a savory or sweet filling, typically wrapped in corn husks or banana leaves. They often contain pork or chicken.

Man Pets Jaguar, Pays with His Finger
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (Reuters) - A New Mexico man made a hasty exit from a zoo after climbing close to a cage to illegally pet a jaguar, but police were able to track him down by the severed finger he left behind.
The shriveled and dried finger from the man's right hand was found outside the cat cage last week by a groundskeeper, Tom Silva, assistant director of the Albuquerque Biological Park, which includes the zoo, said on Tuesday.
The owner of the finger has been identified and is forbidden to return to the zoo, Silva said, adding the park is not planning to press criminal charges.
"I think he's suffered enough," he said.
The man was a frequent visitor and an official zoo member. Eyewitnesses had seen him fleeing the zoo last Tuesday holding his bloodied hand.
The man, who was not identified, said he climbed a steel barrier and scrambled over bushes to get closer to the jaguar to pet it, zoo officials said.
The zoo has a policy of turning to law enforcement officials when contact between visitors and animals turns violent.
"When we find a body part, we are required to call police," Silva said, adding. "He's been summarily banned from the zoo, for the animals' safety and for his own."

An excerpt:
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>A man who cooked and ate nearly 30 cicadas sought medical treatment after suffering a strong allergic reaction to the sauteed insects.
The man showed up at a Bloomington clinic Thursday covered from head-to-toe in hives, and sheepishly told a doctor he'd caught and ate the cicadas after sauteing them in butter with crushed garlic and basil.
``He said they didn't taste too bad, but his wife didn't care for the aroma,'' said Dr. Al Ripani, the doctor who treated the man at Promptcare East.

New York man loses shirt in topless bar (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/afp/afplifestyle_us_lapdance)
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>A New York insurance executive is suing a Manhattan strip club after a champagne-fuelled night of lap-dancing left him nursing a 28,000-dollar bill.
In a lawsuit filed Wednesday, Mitchell Blaser, 53, said the management at the Scores club had added bogus charges to his American Express bill, which he claimed should have been in the region of 2,000 dollars.
Blaser's lawyer, Leonard Zack, said the club had mistakenly banked on the idea that his client -- the chief financial officer of Swiss Re's American unit -- would be too embarrassed to pursue the matter in court.
"It's a swindle, and they probably do it to a lot of people who don't want to do anything," Zack told the Daily News.
Scores spokesman Lonnie Hanover insisted Blaser had "partied like a rock star" with two of his friends.
The final credit card bill included 16,000 dollars for five bottles of Clos de Mesnil champagne, 7,000 dollars for table dances and stripper tips, 1,000 dollars for food and other drinks, and a 4,000-dollar staff tip.
"If you want to live like Colin Farrell, you have to pay for it," Hanover told the New York Post. "The 28,000-dollar bill is totally legitimate."
In his lawsuit, Blaser claimed Scores security personnel had intimidated him into signing a bill for 8,615 dollars. Days later, he said, he discovered that his credit card had been charged three more times

Woman Jailed After Selling Baby on Web
LONDON - A British woman pleaded guilty Friday to selling her unborn baby to two couples over the Internet and arranging for a third to buy it as well.
Moira Greenslade, 33, from Keighley in northern England, got $4,500 after agreeing to give up her child to the couples she contacted through a surrogacy Web site.
Greenslade pleaded guilty at Leeds Crown Court to three charges of obtaining money by deception and three offenses under the Adoption Act. She was sentenced to two years in prison.
Judge Richard Henriques said Greenslade's behavior had undermined the role of the adoption services in this country.
"Those couples who desperately seek a child are frequently prepared to go to extraordinary ends to meet their ambitions," he said. "Their hopes and prayers render them vulnerable to opportunists and fraudsters such as yourself."
Prosecutors said that in February last year, Greenslade agreed to sell her baby for $16,000 to a Scottish couple, Mark and Michelle Johnson. They gave her an initial payment of $2,700.
She later obtained $1,800 from Peter and Sharon Robinson-Hudson, from Wrexham, north Wales, in a similar agreement, worth $9,000.
She canceled both agreements shortly before the baby girl was born, and the Robinson-Hudsons complained to police. Greenslade was arrested on Dec. 11, soon after giving birth in Southampton, southern England.
Police learned she had signed an agreement to sell her child to a third couple, Janet and Andrew Rashley from Southampton. They were at the hospital for the birth but had not paid Greenslade.
Janet Rashley told GMTV that while she and her husband held the baby for the first time, a social worker told them about the other two couples.
"We went in and we asked Moira what was actually going on and she just literally didn't know what to say to us," Rashley said.

Man Charged With Chalupa Assault
Tue Jun 8, 7:27 AM ET Add Strange News - AP to My Yahoo!
DES MOINES, Iowa - A man who claimed he didn't get the taco he paid for has been charged with assault for allegedly pelting a Taco Bell clerk in the face with a chalupa.
Nancy Harrison told police she was working the drive-through Thursday night when Christopher Lame, 24, ordered some food.
He later came into the store, complaining he didn't get the taco he had ordered, police records say. Harrison said that when she asked for a receipt, he went back to his car and brought back the bag.
Harrison said she told him the store was closing, and as she turned away, a chalupa hit her in the face near her right eye. She said she ran into the parking lot and took down the license number as the motorist was driving away.
Lame was identified through the license number.
He is scheduled to appear in court June 15.

Elderly Man Sued for Stopping at Stop Sign
September 9, 2002 - Atlanta, USA
In a case possibly first of its kind, 67 year old Arthur Thompson is being sued by 32 year old Lynn Manaouski for stopping at a 4-way stop sign. In her statement she described how she came up to the intersection leading into her downtown condo, and rear ended the driver in front of her due to his 'complete and full stop'. She continues to say that of the almost 2 years of living in that particular condominium complex, she had not once been behind someone who had made a full stop at the stop sign, and that his inability to be 'consistent with typical driving patterns' caused the accident. As a result, she is convinced that Mr. Thompson is directly responsible for the accident and should be held accountable for all incurred costs of repair to both vehicles. When reminded that it is the law to make a complete stop at a stop sign, her abrupt response was "I am quite capable of deciding when it is a good or bad time to stop my vehicle."

I don't think Reagan should replace Hamilton on the $10 bill, Hamilton is too much of a "classic" president, if you know what I mean.
Replacing Jackson on the $20 bill would be more appropriate, but really I think our money is fine the way it is, unless they issue a new $1 coin, that would be ok to have Reagan on. I don't think they should replace any of the Presidents in our money now, but if they add new bills or coins then it would be cool to put Reagan on it.
But hey, how come Teddy Roosevelt isn't on any of our money?? He was a total bad-ass, and definitley the coolest President, lol.

Naked Russian soccer wives. That's true team spirit!
Russian Wives Strip for Euro2004 Success
Created: 11.06.2004 10:57 MSK (GMT +3), Updated: 14:29 MSK
MosNews
The Russian team at Euro 2004 has been given a welcome boost before the side kicks off on Saturday after getting a lucky strip — a nude photo-shoot by their wives, Reuters reported.
Nine wives and girlfriends of the national team’s players undressed for the cameras to encourage their men to win at the tournament being hosted by Portugal. Only a strategically placed placard featuring a photo of their partners offered some cover.
Daily newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda is printing one of the photos on a full page every day hoping they will inspire the players to go all the way in Portugal.
“The wives have done their part, now it’s the men’s turn,” said freelance photographer Svetlana Yeriklintseva, who came up with the idea for the pictures when the women told her they wanted to lift the team’s spirits after a bad result against Norway in April.
“Our press publishes a lot of pictures of wives but not of (those married to) Russian soccer players. Most often it’s (England captain David’s wife) Victoria Beckham...,” she said. “I believe that our girls are considerably more striking and I wanted this to be reflected in the photographs.”
Yeriklintseva said the women, who have been allowed to travel to Portugal to watch their partners play, needed a little persuasion. Some had worked as models and were used to being photographed but for others it was their first time.
The women are pictured in graceful black and white poses, with nothing but their man’s picture to protect their modesty.
“They cover up more than a mini-dress,” said Yeriklintseva.
Among those taking part were Russian captain Alexei Smertin’s wife Larisa, goalkeeper Sergei Ovchinnikov’s wife Inga and defender Vadim Yevseyev’s wife Tatyana.
Komsomolskaya Pravda correspondent Svetlana Khrustaleva said some players were reluctant for their partners to pose. But striker Dmitry Bulykin could barely wait for his girlfriend Oksana Kuptsova to strip. “He was really keen — he gave a white toothy grin and said: ’Please, Oksana, it will really warm me up.’,” Khrustaleva said.
Russia play Spain in their opening Group A game on Saturday in Faro and will also face hosts Portugal and Greece at the tournament that runs until July 4.

John Kerry Selects Saddam Hussein As Running Mate
5/31/2004 - William Grim
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Paris - John F. “Frenchy” Kerry, Democrat presidential candidate, has selected former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein as his running partner for the November election, according to sources close to the campaign.
“It’s an audacious choice and definitely goes against the grain,” said Mortimer Loeb, managing partner of Leopold & Loeb Associates, a leading campaign consulting firm. “Kerry appears to be ‘thinking outside the box’ with this choice, especially since the Constitution requires candidates to be American citizens. But sometimes a candidate needs to do something especially bold to put some life into his campaign.”
The selection of Saddam has drawn universal praise from Capitol Hill Democrats. “I think Saddam will make a fine Vice President,” said Tom Daschle, Senate Minority Leader. “He’s got a lot of hand-on experience running a government and he’s known as a tough administrator who gets things done. OK, there’s the War Crimes Trial he will have to go through during his first term, but at least he isn’t a Neocon.”
General Secretary Kofi Annan also greeted the selection of Saddam with approval. “We appreciate everything that Saddam has done in the past to promote the good offices of the United Nations, especially the very successful oil-for-food program that put billions of dollars of kickbacks into the Swiss bank accounts of deserving Third World diplomats like yours truly.”

Nearly 30 servicemen in the Far East city of Khabarovsk were poisoned by thallium after smoking and sniffing a can of chemicals they found in a garbage heap, Interfax news agency reported.
Eight of the solders are in a serious condition, one is critical, a military source told the news agency. The source also said that the soldiers were experiencing hair loss.
The soldiers said that they found a container with a chemical reactive. One of its components was thallium, a toxic heavy metal, the source was quoted by the news agency as saying. The soldiers then used the substance as foot talc. They also sniffed it and mixed it in their smoking tobacco.
“As a result, thallium levels in their bodies were 300-1000 times above normal,” the source said.
He added, however, that this was merely one of the versions. To determine how the thallium made its way into their bodies, they were taken to a military medical academy in St. Petersburg. The soldier who is in a critical condition has remained in Khabarovsk.
The source said that a criminal investigation has been launched, but Interfax was unable to confirm this from an official source.
Would anyone like a meteorite for breakfast?
http://www.guardian.co.uk/international/st...1238116,00.html (http://www.guardian.co.uk/international/story/0,3604,1238116,00.html)
Meteorite Gatecrashes Breakfast
David Fickling in Sydney
Monday June 14, 2004
The Guardian
A New Zealand couple had an unexpected visitor from space at the weekend when a 1.3kg (2.8lb) meteorite crashed into their living room shortly before breakfast.
The meteorite came through the roof of Phil and Brenda Archer's house in the Auckland suburb of Ellerslie at 9.30am on Saturday morning.
"I was in the kitchen doing breakfast and there was this almighty explosion," Mrs Archer told Auckland's Sunday Star-Times newspaper. "I couldn't see anything, there was just dust. I thought something had exploded in the ceiling. Phil saw a stone under the computer and it was hot to touch."
The scorched rock bounced off a leather sofa and hit the ceiling a second time before coming to rest underneath the computer. The Archers were drying it out in their oven yesterday and plan to sell it to meteorite-hunters.
Joel Schiff, the editor of Meteorite Magazine and a fellow Auckland resident, visited the house hours after the impact.
"It was a bit like a bomb site," he told the Guardian. "There's a big hole right in the ceiling of the living room and the insulation is coming out of the hole. It made a very large indent in the sofa, bounced off and hit the ceiling again. There was a big dent in the ceiling, like you'd smashed it with your fist."
Tests at Auckland University today are expected to establish whether before it entered the atmosphere the rock had broken off from the outer surface of one of the asteroids drifting through the solar system between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter.
Most such asteroids are 4.6bn years old, the same age as the solar system.
A basketball-sized lump hit the atmosphere at around 33,000mph, before slowing down as it burnt up in the atmosphere until it was travelling at only a few hundred metres a second when it crashed through the Archers' roof tiles.
Even at that speed it would have been moving fast enough to kill on the spot and the Archers' one-year-old grandson had been playing in the room moments before it hit.
The only recorded case of a human being hit by a meteorite is a woman in Alabama, who was bruised by a 4kg rock which crashed through her roof and bounced off her radio in 1954.
New Zealand's slender land area and light urbanisation mean that the Ellerslie meteorite is only the ninth ever to have been found in the country.
More than 10,000 meteorites bigger than 10g are believed to hit the earth every day, but the majority land in the ocean or sparsely-populated areas and are never found.
The most dramatic meteor shower of recent years happened last March in Park Forest, a town in Illinois. Hundreds of meteorites damaged cars and houses, but Mr Schiff said such events are freak occurrences. "The Earth is passing through these belts of asteroids all the time but it's still a very rare and random event," he said.

Men drive better with women passengers
Men drive better when they have a woman passenger, according to new research.
A study published in Men's Car magazine in Germany found most men drove more carefully when they had a woman as a passenger sitting next to them.
Of 500 men and women drivers tested, 65% of men were found to change their driving style when a woman was sitting next to them - 44% saying it was because they tried to drive more safely.
The same survey showed women took little notice of whether they had a man or woman in their passenger seat.
Some 71% of women questioned said they did not change their driving style if a man was a passenger.

No doubt we men think with our..."other head", but it doesn't mean that our ears are down there too!
Brazilian Given Vasectomy For Earache:
A Brazilian who went to a surgery complaining of earache is suing doctors after they performed a vasectomy on him instead.
Valdemar Lopes de Moraes, 39, went to his local surgery in Montes Claros and told the receptionist he had been feeling pain in the ear for days.
On the same day there was a vasectomy scheduled for a man called Aldemar Rodrigues, 29 and when the receptionist called "Aldemar", Valdemar thought he was being called and went in.
Doctor Luiz Carlos Lenoir told Estado de Sao Paulo newspaper that he was a bit surprised when he saw his patient had not been shaved but nothing else was said and he carried on with the surgery.
Mr Moraes said: "I thought my earache had turned into something more serious and had descended to my genitals, that is why I didn't say anything."
The hospital will perform another surgery at Mr Moraes to reverse the vasectomy next week.
Mr Moraes said: "I don't care about the vasectomy I already have two sons. What I really want is that they cure this earache that is killing me."
The local health secretary said the case was still being investigated.

According to the Camino a Canaan cemetery the sensor attached to the coffin is to avoid anyone being buried alive.
Spokesperson for the cemetery told La Cuarta: "We want to be pioneers and avoid catalepsy cases, in which a person gets completely paralysed for a few hours and ends up buried as if they were dead.
"We want families to rest assured that if a case like this ever happens their loved ones will be immediately rescued."

Thieves steal toilet - with man still in it
Thieves who stole a public toilet in a Belarus city accidentally kidnapped a man who was sitting on it at the time.
Pravda reports that the thieves stole the portable toilet in the city of Gomel, Belarus, and loaded it on to their tractor trailer.
They played it so cool that passers-by presumed they were taking it away legitimately - but one man knew better.
He was sat on the toilet at the time and was startled to suddenly find himself being carried through the city on the back of a tractor.
The 45-year-old man was trapped and could not release himself until the rope the thieves had tied around the cubicle loosened because of the jolting ride.
He finally opened the door to find he was being driven at full speed through the city's suburbs. He jumped off the tractor and broke his collar-bone, SPB-Vedomosti reported.
The man reported the incident to the police and officers eventually tracked down the missing toilet to the house of a local resident.

Just last month, the northern white rhinoceros went extinct. over 30 years trying to save that animal, and why did they kill it? Ivory. Why? Because the guerillas sold it on the black market for money so that they could buy bullets to kill each other.

Woman Settles 'Toilet Phobia' Lawsuit
JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - A South African woman has settled a lawsuit in which she claimed to have developed a phobia about toilets after falling off one at a hotel.
Antonia Hart, 59, sued the Sun International hotel chain following the August 2003 incident, asking for 91,000 rand ($14,000) for pain, injury, medical treatment and "loss of amenities," the South African Press Agency (SAPA) reported.
Hart's lawyers had accused the hotel of negligence, saying their client toppled off the toilet when it suddenly broke "whilst in normal use for the purposes for which it was installed," SAPA quoted court papers as saying.
Sun International's lawyers conceded that the toilet had broken, but said Hart's husband had signed a liability waiver upon checking in.
"The matter was settled between the parties and the magistrate was informed on Monday that an agreement had been reached and that the lawsuit would not proceed," SAPA said.

Dangling from Meat Hooks, for Fun
MIAMI (Reuters) - Law enforcement officials in the Florida Keys are mystified by a bizarre new pastime -- young people dangling themselves from meat hooks on a popular sandbar.
A U.S. Coast Guard spokeswoman said on Sunday that the Monroe County sheriff's office and Coast Guard were called on July 12 to the sandbar off Whale Harbor in Islamorada where locals say wild behavior is becoming a tradition.
They found that five young people had erected a bamboo tripod and hung meat hooks from it. A young woman, her feet brushing the surface of the shallow water, dangled from the frame, hooks embedded firmly in her shoulders.
According to a Coast Guard video, she did not seem to mind the hooks.
Lt. Tom Brazil of the Coast Guard told the Key West Citizen newspaper that a young man, who also had hooks embedded in his heavily pierced and tattooed skin, assured him the group was "just enjoying the afternoon."
A Coast Guard spokeswoman in Miami said the group had clearly done this before and intended to post photos of themselves on a Web site dedicated to "body modification" -- the ritualistic piercing of the body.
"It looked like a daily routine for them," she said, adding that the hooks had been inserted in the skin in a professional manner and had drawn very little blood."
"As long as they weren't creating any kind of ruckus or riot within a crowd they really weren't breaking any laws."
The Coast Guard passed the video on to federal justice authorities but no further action will be taken.

Does a Man Called horse live on that Key? I've seen that sort of hook hanging behavior, on a documentary about extreme tats and piercings. Scary stuff. And it's true, they don't even bleed the way they do it.

You find this kind of stuff on the web somewhere. There is a procedure they have to go through before the ritual, such as the time before the peircing in which they don't eat and drink, and what foods and drink they can or cannot consume before fasting begins, that aids in the lack of dripping blood. I don't remember anything else from that docu, so you can do a search to find out more.

MARYVILLE, Tenn. - A man was arrested on his 23rd birthday after a police officer saw him nude and covered with nacho cheese from a pool snack bar.
Michael P. Monn was arrested early Sunday in the parking lot outside the pool.
An officer saw a nude man carrying a box of Frito Lay snacks and a container of nacho cheese run toward a Jeep in the lot and stopped him.
"The male had nacho cheese in his hair, on his face and on his shoulders," Maryville Police Department officer Scott Spicer reported. "The nude male had a strong odor of alcohol and was semi-incoherent."
Investigators said someone climbed an 8-foot fence, broke into the pool snack bar through a window, threw nacho cheese on a wall and scattered chips on the ground. About $40 in chips and $7 in nacho cheese were stolen.
Monn was charged with burglary, theft of less than $500, vandalism less than $500 and public intoxication and was cited for indecent exposure. He was being held at the Blount County Jail in lieu of a $9,300 bond.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>Dead Couple to Be Married
JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - A South African man who shot his pregnant fiance dead before killing himself will be posthumously married to her at the weekend.
Police Captain Mohale Ramatseba said David Masenta shot 25-year-old Mgwanini Molomo after a quarrel before turning the gun on himself. But Johannesburg's Sowetan newspaper said family and friends wanted to remember them as a happy couple destined for a happy life together.
The groom's corpse would be dressed in a cream suit and his bride's in a gown for the ceremony, at which a priest in the rural village of Ceres in Limpopo will bless the union before the two are buried, the Sowetan said.
"In African culture, there is no death -- there is merely the separation of body and soul," said cultural expert Mathole Motshekga. "It is also important because the families are married together."
"This does not mean the relationship has irretrievably broken down."
So who's more screwed up? The guy who shot everyone or the people who are actually dressing up the bodies and performing a wedding?

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>Fast food makes way for even faster food
PUBLISHED: August 26, 2004
The Associated Press
Spoons are so old school. And so slow.
Harried Americans searching for ways to shave precious seconds from their dining routines have seized on a slew of new foods designed to keep them on the go -- no utensils needed.
There's soup in heat-and-sip cups. There's yogurt in squeeze tubes. Mini cookies in snazzy little cans that fit in car cup holders. There are even frozen peanut butter and jelly sandwiches -- crustless for the little ones.
''It's all about instantaneous gratification,'' said Kara Romanow, a consumer products analyst at AMR Research in Boston. ''If you can have spray butter, isn't that better than having to cut butter and melt it before you use it?''
Long a factor in the fast food restaurant world, so-called dashboard dining has become a major force in the grocery industry.
For many manufacturers, catering to consumers demanding convenience has meant coming up with kid- and car-friendly packaging first and worrying about how to fit their foods in it later.
Such was the case with Squeezers, Stonyfield Farm's entry in the yogurt-in-a-tube category. Getting a piece of that popular market meant spending a year retooling the New Hampshire company's yogurt recipe to work in toothpaste tube-like packaging.
''We're moving toward the consumer instead of asking the consumer to come to us,'' Stonyfield founder Gary Hirshberg said recently. ''I couldn't necessarily put a dollar amount to (the development cost), but it was huge.''
More companies are recognizing that food packaging can be more than a pretty label, affecting not just whether consumers use a product over a competitor's, but also how they use it.
Call it the food performance factor. Potato chips can't merely taste, look and smell good; they also have to work well.
How do chips work well? Depends on your target audience. For moms, single serving cups that keep chips intact inside lunch boxes might do it. For frat boys, it could be a ring-shaped container ready to accommodate a bowl of dip.
People are as drawn to a product as they are to how its package lets them use it, Romanow said. And they want to use it fast, easily, and increasingly, on the road.
As a result, scores of products -- from soups to chips to energy bars -- now come in cup holder-friendly containers.
Automobile manufacturers know this. During the past 10 years, minivans went from two cup holders to 12 or more, including special rectangular ones for drink boxes, according to Consumer Reports magazine.
The Campbell Soup Co. spent two years adapting its soups for cup holder containers. It's Soup at Hand line offers 13 varieties of drinkable soups with smaller noodles and chicken bits that won't clog the soda can-style sip hole.
Both are screwed up. It's a strange custom. Like the Haitian custom of photographing their dead and putting 8x10s on their walls. I've printed countless rolls of film shot at funerals and viewing ceremonies, of the dead family members lying in their caskets. It's hard to fathom how someone would want to remember their loved one in that manner, through photographs.
