"Ya know I'm really hoping that they will remake Miami Vice as a movie. It will be a cinematic masterpeice."

I know that I'm in the minority here, but I'm holding out my hopes for it.
I absolutely loved the tv series. As a matter of fact, I just bought the first season.

I'll check it out. But Collin Farrell seems more and more like a hack these days. He's acting in everything and most of it is bad.

MIchael Mann, since he is directing.

Could have some potential if Mann is directing, but I just wish they wouldn't use the Miami Vice name. Come up with an original title, characters and plot. I highly doubt this will be like Starsky and Hutch but its still as unoriginal as it gets.

After just watching several episodes from the first season of Miami Vice, I definitely hink that the concept of a Miami Vice for a movie can be a good idea.
Miami is still a flourishing city and the idea can easily be easily updated if done right and serious. It definitely isn't going to be a comedy or a spoof.
I'm glad the original creator of it is in charge. He'll make sure it's done right.

Jump through hoops for sure. The trailer really didn't much for me, but I like Mann's work and still look forward to this film. I do hope that the original music finds its way into the film in some way.

I agree that at least we have a respectable director behind this (too bad we don't have good actors). But this is still a bore of a movie idea.
Someone catch my jaw cause its been yawning at this idea for months.

Well you know, Michael Mann CREATED the original Miami Vice, that name and all those characters are his. If he wants to make a movie based on them then he has every right, and there's nothing wrong with it at all.

^
Actually, the original Miami Vice show started conceptually as a spin-off of "Hill Street Blues" -- Hill and Renko were supposed to be the main characters. Bochco didn't want to let them go, so Anthony Yerkovich (one of the principal writer/producers on Hill Street) gave us Crocket & Tubbs. Mann was brought on very early on and was responsible for a lot of the look and feel of the show as an executive producer -- but saying that he's the creator is a bit off the mark.
That said, Miami Vice wouldn't be Miami Vice without Mann.

It was mentioned during one of the 'behind the scenes' featurettes on the Hill Street Blues season 1 DVD set. Kind of surprised me as well.
That said, I've only seen an episode here or there of the Miami Vice TV show. I'm looking forward to the movie -- if only for the visuals. I love the look that Mann has gotten by pushing the HDV cameras in low light -- the noisy image of the darks contrast very well with the light in the night scenes.

Hill Street? Definitely worth it if you're a fan of the show. I'd only seen it in reruns on TV Land (edited for time episodes) and it's nice to have the original, uncut broadcasts.
As far as cop shows go, Hill Street really set the bar for everything that's come after. Although it's fairly episodic (though not as episodic as say a contemporary show like Magnum PI), you do see arc plots and character development progress along with a strong ensemble cast. Next to Homicide and The Shield, it's one of my favorites.
The DVD set is pretty reasonably priced -- give it a rental if you're hesitant.

I just got back from seeing it and I ended up loving this alot more than I even thought that I would!
Farrell and Foxx both do great jobs. This definitely isn't the tv show. It's much grittier and brings you through the entire drug deal. It starts off by throwing you right into the mix. Fantastic crime drama. To me, it's a mixture of 'Heat' and 'Collateral'. It's not a mindless cop shoot em up, but a well developed crime story.
Well done from Michael Mann, IMO!

Which begs the question, why even call it "MIami Vice"? If you're going to go so far away from what made that title famous, then call it something else. I don't understand the point.

I don't see most movies in the theater anymore. I usually just wait and buy the ones I want to see on DVD. But for as much of a fan of the TV show that I still am I had heard so many poor things about the film that I have held off from buying it.
Well, anyway, I couldn't sleep last night so I got up and the movie happened to be starting on cable (it premiered on Cinemax last night) so I decided to check it out and form my own opinion.
Colin Farell was no Don Johnson and Jamie Fox is no Philip Michael Thomas but Michael Mann is still, and will always be, Michael Mann and I really enjoyed the film. I liked the grittiness of it. It actually felt at certain parts like watching the TV show because of how Mann would cut the scenes together and raise the dramatic effects of the film by just playing a music track. Granted he did a lot of those same things for Collateral as well. But I did enjoy it and I will probably now pick it up on DVD.

^I enjoyed it overall as well! Definitely can't go in thinking that it's going to be like the tv show.
And speaking of the tv show, I just finished season 4 of Miami Vice and am 4 episodes into season 5.
Still love the show!
