View Full Version : Clone Wars cartoon series

Let me just say upfront I think the Clone Wars cartoon is a great idea. It's something for the fans between films....it sort of loosely ties them together, tho' one is gospel and the other is "sort of" gospel. And they're nicely made, as is evidenced by the Emmy that the series won. Plus it's made by a couple SW fans, so further the kudos.
But in the past couple weeks I've read reviews of the Clone Wars DVD coming out in March I think....and in both reviews I've read so far, each journalist/reviewer has made comments along the lines of....."most of this has been better than Eps. I & II"....and one I remember distinctly, when referring to the Ep. 20 of the series....a double-length finale that introduces General Grievous where the author says "...8 minutes of higher quality than the best 8 minutes of The Phantom Menace."
Now, while I can appreciate the cartoon and the gaps it bridges, in no way.......(let me speak louder here.....IN NO @#!$% WAY is that show better than the worst moments of either prequel. I'm sorry. To say that the GG episode (and I watched this online....you can too on HS I think) was better than the Maul/Qui Gon/Kenobi fight is utterly ridiculous. In fact the whole suggestion is laughable. And that's no disrepect intended towards the series or their likable creators...(I've read interviews and they really enjoy the story and the whole process).
Just a rant here...

i agree with you completely!
the cartoons are great, but they are in NO WAY better than the movies

You know, the worst thing about opinions is that everybody has one! I wholeheartedly agree with you, that reviewer's comment was stupid and it was obviously pulled straight from his @$$, but so are a lot of reviewers' comments, about SW and otherwise. I too, rather enjoyed the Clone War cartoons, but if I missed one, I certainly didn't miss any sleep over it! The Clone War shorts were/are pasttimes, something interesting and enjoyable to tide me over. Star Wars is an event, from casual fans to super duper-fanboys. It's record speaks for itself. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/banghead.gif

The MOST ironic thing is that IF the prequels were formatted just like the cartoon series, people -- the same people who say "If only the movies had been like that" -- would then turn around and complain it's all action and no substance. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif
I know it's popular to diss the prequels...but my god....that's insulting. Is it that hard to admit the prequels were anything other than rubbish...?

First off let me say that I think it's ridiculous to compare the CW cartoons and the prequels because they are told in VERY different mediums and therefore they cannot be compared.
but on the other hand... If you take the sci-fi movie genre and the cartoon-short genre and compare the prequels and the CWseries with other works in their genres I agree that that the cartoons rank much higher than the movies. Why? The movies had bad dialouge, awkward acting, and TPM had a very bland story. Plus they were sort of unoriginal compared to the classic trilogy which was revolutionary at the time. In short, compared to good Sci-Fi movies the prequels don't hold their own that well.
On the other hand the Clone Wars shorts had everything one asks for in such a cartoon plus it was done with originality and with the secret missing ingredient from episodes I and II - STYLE. The Cartoons were not only Sci-Fi, but Sci-Fi with style and a sense of an artistic idea.
That's just my point of view though...

I also do not think it is proper to compare the two. Nothing in the CW series compares to the DUel of the Fates fight, but I must say that I was particularly effected by the fight between Asajj Ventress and Anakin.
I will say one thing though. The concise nature of the CW series give them a great deal of impact. That may have been enough to influence the reviewers.
But I don't listen to reviewers anyway. I have never read a review, ever. Unless you count the feed back given by us in these forums. MOst reviewers don't present as if giving an opinion, they try to define what they review, which I feel is not write. These things are objective, after all.

This is what society is coming to, when people who know ABSOLUTELY nothing about what they are talking about sit around on their moron butts (i would like to use another term, but this is not MF) talk about Star Wars to us, thinking that their "almighty" knowledge of how a film should be is the gospel truth. I have a message for most critics: Leave. Just leave. Find a nice planet to live on. We'll pay for it please, just get out. My mini-rant is over, and I am angry at critics...gonna have to set up the critic dartboard again and call the therapist....

Here is a funny story
When I went on opening night for EI I went with my best friend Justin. I was fairly pleased with EI, he hated it. We discussed it for hours afterward, I understood his opinions and he understood mine, but we respectfully agreed to disagree.
When EII came out Justin and I again went on opening night, he mostly went along just to keep me company, since he had already given up on the PT. Justin sat politely, not commenting on the film. About half way through, I couldn't take Hayden anymore, it was the fireside love confession. I turned to Justin who was already shaking his head in disapproval, and I said "what has George Lucas done to SW!" I was disgusted, and I was not alone, Half the theatre was chuckling. And this was the very first screening, the midnight one, so you know the audience was primarily SW fanatics. After the house lights came up I wanted to cry. I was crushed by how bad the acting was. I have since come to appreciate the film for the visual FX extravaganza that it was. Justin really felt genuinly bad for me, but he was like "now you know how I felt after EI."
Fast forward a couple of years. Clone wars came out and I loved it. It was definately better than EI(and I really like EI), and EII to me. Then a few months after the first run was over, Justin came down to DC to visit. We were tooling around on the net, and just for the hell of it I logged into Hyperspace, and asked Justin if he wanted to check out this new SW cartoon about the Clone Wars. He shrugged reluctantly. So we sat there and watched every episode in order. Justin sat there patiently, not saying a word. He obviously hated them, with their exaggerated action sequences and such. You see my friend Justin is a Film Theory buff, and it's a safe bet he has probably seen more movies than 2BQ, and he's the smartest person I have ever met. In short I really trust his opinion, but he is one of those film critic types. So I naturally thought he was gonna think these cartoons were even worse than the previous two movies.
Well after they were all over I turned to Justin to ask his opinion, and I thought he was gonna POP! He absolutly loved them. He was like a little child explaining what he got for Christmas. And all he kept repeatin was "how come the movies couldn't have been like that!" So needless to say I was pleasntly surprised. Now fast foreward to the present. Me and Justin were talking the other night and all of the sudden he says "ooh, ooh," "did you see the new Clone Wars shows?" Then he went off again for like ten minutes about how cool they were.
So although you can't truthfully compare the two, they're two different kinds of media. As far as pure entertainment goes. My vote goes with Clone Wars. That doesn't mean I hate the films at all. But there were things that definately disapointed me with the films, but I was completely satisfied with the cartoons.
That's how I feel about it. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

I disagree. While TPM and AOTC are deifnately better than the Cartoon, I wouldn't go as far as to say the best parts of the Cartoon (Asajj vs. Anakin, Kit Fisto's underwater fight, ARC troopers shootin cocky-doody, Obi-Wan vs. Durge, Grievous vs. Jedi) arn't better than the worst parts of AOTC and TPM (Jar Jar getting his hand stuck in the podracer, little Ani hitting on Padme, the now this is Podracing line, Padme and Anakin rolling around after Ani pretends he got hurt by the Shaak). The best parts of the Cartoon are definately better than the mentioned worst parts of the prequels.

Hi, if you like the clone wars cartoons this is the wrong place! I thought they were okay but heaps of wrong things with them like where are the ball turrets on the gunships?

Don't mean to spoil your fun, but that's how Animation should be.
I hate to tell you this, but the Clone Wars was meant as a promotional stunt to swollow in younger generations to ROTS.
However the 3D Clone Wars will be heeps better.

You have to look at cartoons for what they are: fun television viewing for kids. This Clone Wars Animated Series is no different.
I liked the animation and the story. The show was just fun and I can see why kids would enjoy them. I could see why an adult would not like them, but you have to keep them in context. The show wasn't trying to be sophisticated--they were meant to be fun.

As I said I over-reacted, they were good fun I over look if it isn't as "sophisticated". I mean a kid would have loved them it would be like the coolest thing around.

I liked the cartoon more as it gives us a more detailed insides of the clone war... Although I had only watched the first series, it gives me enough info on how good a pilot is for Anakin.(But the cartoon was not so well drawn)

The CW cartoon was an pleasent suprise, not as bad as I thought it would be, althought I was expecting abit more from it. More dialouge, more storywise and less overexaggerating battle/fight scenes, could have made this far better.

Pravus, that might be what the 3D series is going to be. The cartoon was meant to be exaggerated and that is Genndy Tartakovsky's style. See "Power Puff Girls" and "Dexter's Laboratory."

True, I have seen does. But turning Windu into Superman was over the edge style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif
I'll hope this new 3D series will do something more out of the CW.

The CW series and the movies are two very different things. What makes a good cartoon does not always make a good movie and vice versa.
That being said, CW is a strikingly good cartoon series, whereas I don't think E1 or E2 are strikingly good movies, no matter how entertaining they might be.

There were some great, if cheesy, quotes in this series. I loved it when Anakin said "impressive, most impressive" about C3P0's new gold plating. Also when Obi-Wan said "there are other options to fighting." Sent tingles down my spine.
I don't have time to write a critique of the series now but I really enjoyed it and the extra information it gave regarding the SW universe. :)

That's because all the single adults that live in their mom's basement bought up all the tickets before the kids had a chance at seeing it. :yoda:
