SW Galaxies is a massive multiplayer online roleplaying game. You choose a character to play as in the Star Wars universe and you sculpt him how you wish to in the galaxy. There are tons of possibilities ranging from Human Jedi to Twi'Lek Dancers. Other than that you just play out your character and "make a name for yourself" in the Star Wars Galaxy.

Sounds cool, but can you actually fly to other planets, like jump in a ship and navigate it yourself out of the planets atmosphere and fly yourself to another planet?
Toran

Can't say as I haven't played the game, just going by what I know and have heard about it. I do believe you travel to other planets, don't think you physically navigate the ship though...

There is an expansion pack "Jump to Lighspeed" where you can get your own ship, fly to other planets, and even dogfight in space.

Not sure of the exact time length but apparently it is ridiculously long before you are eligible to become a Jedi.
Yeah I played it once for about 5 minutes I ended up getting killed by a Corellian Butterfly I was embarresd. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif

there is no time set on when you can become a jedi. the jedi "profession" is unlocked to random people. certain actions will make your character force sensitive. if you become sensitive enough you can persue the jedi trait, but once you start down the jedi path you can not choose any other profession. the randomness of becoming a jedi is to keep it realistic. there weren't many jedi in the movies because they were all killed off, so in the game they are rare too. the game creators also originally had it so that if you were a master jedi and died, you became the "blue glowie" like obi-wan, yoda, and anakin, and were unable to affect the physical world, just walk around and observe. that aspect has been removed, but the jedi are limited to only 3 deaths ( any other non-jedi character can die as many times as possible as long as he has "cloning insurance") before that character becomes perma-dead. so being a jedi is very risky in that aspect, but even more so since the creators have now made the galactic civil war much more noticeable in game play. I've been playing the game since december, and I love it. I recommend any star wars fan get the game. another thing about the 6 month waiting period on becoming jedi: I've been playing 3 monthes and I noticed my character was force sensitive about a month ago which was pretty exciting, so I'm working to become a jedi, which is a long hard road, but I plan to stick it out.

Do you know if you can be a sith?
No I think there is an actual time set before you can become a jedi. I think it's 6 months before you can beome eligable for force sensitivity but I may be wrong.
Jorgy
03-02-2005, 01:24 AM
I belive you are wrong. it just matters on the actions you take in the game. they've changed the original jedi format. before you had to do set professions and do set quests, now it's different for everyone. I've been playing for 3 monthes and I'm force sensitive. may take 6 monthes or more to actually unlock all of the abilities, but there is no set time before you're able to become a jedi.
to answer azreal wells, I'm not sure if you can become sith, but I do know you can be a dark jedi. I haven't really researched that part of becoming a jedi, right now I'm just working towards becoming a normal jedi.

yes. when you become a padawan, you are sent on a quest to get your lightsaber crystals. once you obtain those, you can build your lightsaber any color you want. I believe anyone can have a lightsaber, but only jedi are able to use it properly. also, if you aren't a jedi, acquiring the resources to build the lightsaber is very expensive.

It just seems that it's a really slow game, 3 months to even become force sensitive is still a long time. I suppose that does make more profit seeing as how they charge per month as well as buying the game, but I like to advance faster in RPG games.

Is that 3 months playing time?
Jorgy
03-07-2005, 05:24 AM
yes it is 3 monthes playing time, I normally play for a few hours I get home from work. I didn't play for about 2 weeks when I moved, but that's a different story. the reason it takes so much work to become a jedi is so that not everyone is a jedi. the creators wanted the game to be like the movies, with jedi a rare site. I've only seen a few in my time on the game, and only had a chance to talk with one since the others were just running through town.

I've always wondered about the software pricing AND the monthly subscription, but you have to remember something about MMORPGs...
When you buy the game, you're buying the software, just like any other game. When you pay the monthly subscription, you're helping them upkeep and maintain the servers.

it doesnt take 3 months to be force sensitive. im a veteran player cause i have been playing for almost a year now and love it. You can be force sensitive in one day if you want. i just recoment wearing kenetic armor and get your abilities enhanced from a doc.
......to find out if you are force sensitive just type /force and it will say "you have no connection with the force" and etc depending on the quest you complete which are realy easy

I read in a magazine that the possibility of becoming a jedi is smaller than the one of meeting one of the special characters(Han Solo,Vader).

No, meeting vader only takes a day or two all you do is go to palpatines palace and do missions for each person and you get missions from vader and siddous. doing this is one of the requirments of becoming force sensitive along with jabba's palace or the rebel hideout.

yeah, approximately 128 million XP. but that is Force Sensitivity XP. You have to trade in unused "normal" XP to obtain FS XP. And the ratio of FS XP to normal XP isn't always 1:1. I have a friend who is a master rifleman, she caps out at 900K XP, trades that in for only 30K FS XP. so it's a LONG grind.

Just to correct one mistake aboot the Jedi, you get unlimited deaths now. They did away with perma deaths when they redid the FS system. Now when you die, you lose a skill...kinda' like "deleveling". So now you don't need to worry aboot dieing. Anyways, Galaxies is fun, I've played off and on since its launch, I'm probably gonna start back up again. I was working on getting myself to be a Jedi. I play on the Kauri server as Danaton Carion if anyone is curious.

just to correct a mistake. yes it's true they got rid of the perma-death, but now you only have 3 lives. they give you 3 in case there are server crashes, client crashes, computer crashes, lag disconnects, or anything else that could cause you to die without you being involved. after those 3 deathes, you lose your jedi. that's why when you unlock your jedi they give you another character ( which you can also make a jedi).

I've been a subscriber since launch (what, was that back in 2002 or 2003?) and I have really enjoyed my time with the game. However, there have been many profession problems (ie: Squad Leader being entirely useless).
Back in the first incarnation of the Force Sensitive system, I got aggravated because it was based around mastering certain professions and a certain amount of them. The professions would be completely randomized for each player, so it was nearly impossible to tell. The only way to know for sure was by looting one of the holocrons which would tell you what you should master next, but it expired afterward. The problem was they were on high-end mobs and rare and when I got my first one, it told me to become a Master Squad Leader.
See, what made me angry was that SOE was trying to tell me how I should play my game. Squad Leader didn't interest me because I preferred soloing instead of hastling to get a half dozen people together to go hunt things down. It can get tedious. So I refused to play their GRINDING quest and instead opted to spend my time roleplaying and I am glad I did.
By the time they changed their system a year or so ago, my main avatar became instantly Force Sensitive. Curious about it, I decided to go on with their new "quest" system only to find out it was double if not TRIPLE the grind I would have originally had! Furthermore, their Force Sensitive skills were unsurrenderable if I would decide I got tired of the grind. So I basically deleted that character and started over on another server as an Imperial officer and found a nice Imperial roleplaying guild and have loved it ever since.
To answer a question, if you want to put in the effort to become a Jedi, it is possible. You may also become a Dark Jedi after the trials. There are however no playable Sith characters. Who's to stop you from roleplaying one? I don't know.
It still has a lot of problems. Potentially some more problems with the Combat UpgradeRebalance (CURB) coming in May. But the CURB COULD just be the thing we have been wanting all along. Hard to tell at this juncture.
The good/bad thing is that some professions already seem to be nulled by what the CURB seems to be doing. I don't know if it is good or not but we will have to see.
The Jump to Lightspeed is very fun, though very difficult if not impossible to do solo in places. It has been the best thing to have come to the game.
The graphics on the game are really very good. Perhaps the best of any MMORPG I have seen.
Downside: Although it is an mmoRPG, only a minority who play the game seem to understand what RPG means. There are some people who do try to RP and I have been thankful for them, but there are all too many who are childish trolls and just play to harass other players.
I have been unable to play lately because of SOE server problems, but I have enjoy my stay with it.

How many planets are you able to visit, also in the planets, can you explore the whole thing or just bits and pieces
Ko-Enshaku
04-21-2005, 08:42 AM
You are able to visit:
Tatooine, Naboo, Rori (a moon of Naboo), Corellia, Talus (a small planetoid in the Corellia system), Endor, Lok, Dantooine, Yavin IV and Dathomir. And with the RotW expansion in may, you will be able to go to Kashyyyk the wookiee homeworld too.
The species you can play as, if you don't know, are:
Human, Bothan, Twi'lek, Trandoshan, Wookiee, Rodian, Zabrak, Ithorian, Sollustan and Mon Calimari. (I may be forgetting one?)
Happy to answer any more questions. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif
[EDIT] P.S. You are able to go all over the planet. It isn't set up to be a wrap-around world though. It has borders, but the play area is really huge. On my first playing session, I walked from the capital city of Corellia called Coronet (which is around the center of the map) to Kor Vella (at the upper left corner of the map), a small Imperial outpost and it took me somewhere around an hour to walk there. It was kind of exciting for me though. I had no weapon, no armour, nary a dime to my name, but I set out on my own adventure before I knew a thing about the play mechanics. I nearly got killed by some angry cats, but I made it through. Anymore, I think they start you off with a bike though. But it doesn't beat the good ol days of being on your own with only your wits to keep you alive.

I've been playing since launch here in the UK. I'm seriously considering quitting the game altogether. It can be very repetitive and dull at times, other times its a lot of fun. JTL is a fine expansion and with the wookie expansion coming up i'm waiting to see where this takes Galaxies. We shall see...
Ko-Enshaku
04-21-2005, 09:00 AM
Me too actually, Tos. I am eager to see if they completely botch the combat mechanics or not. (Not that it could get all too much worse.) I was with some of my guildies, stormtroopers, and we were taking down some rebel mobs and it up and decides that my shots don't work for no reason even though I am in perfect range and everything. Then it glitched and popped an ATST without any effort at all and the mob that did it was a lightweight. Needless to say it was a bad trip. A few more unfortunate mishaps later and three of my guildies were nearly ready to quit on the spot.
But there have been many many good times with the bad. I don't want to paint swg in a horrible light. The absolute highest points of the game for me though are really not what "content" SOE is cooking up (that was sarcasm, as they haven't really added a whole lot of content versus how long the game has been live) but the best parts of the game center around the stories we cook up. And our ability to never break character. That is the glue that has kept my $15 per month coming in the past year or couple. Because after the first year or two I had done basically all the professions I was interested in completing. Know what I mean?
That and I have hope. And I kinda like JTL a lot. I just haven't managed to finish up Tier 3 toward Imperial Pilot. And pilot has been a blast so far. Pun not so much intended.
Some say you get what you put into it. And I agree to an extent. There are many people who gripe about SWG not having a Star Wars feel. However, those are the same people who run around in circles with a lightsaber turned on, wearing their underwear and a trenchcoat shouting, "LOLOLOL JEDI flAshers R teh ROXXORZ!!!!!!!1111" ... Can these kind of people actually expect the game to FEEL like starwars if they act like dumb@$$es?! Well the point is that they DO expect that. And they are perhaps the biggest problem with the game in my opinion. I end up having to put 99% of the people at Starports on my /addignore list for spamming and being idiots. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/saber.gif Sheesh.

Once as a non-combatant, I was a neutral travelling through the different player cities on a search of a good resource vendor and/or a good city to live in when I came to a particular city on Corellia, the name I forget. As soon as I got off the shuttle, the mayor was waiting with full composite and a flamethrower. Because I wasn't factioned and his city was a Rebel bastion, he tossed me to the militia and I was executed on the spot.
They executed me over and over after I would clone in their city, finally allowing me to get on the next shuttle and leave.
So I left. I left and I formed a militia of my own. Fortunately, I had made many good acquaintances who were pvp fanatics and itching to kill. I led them into battle (only so I could spit on that mayor's dead carcass) and we demolished them. We tore down their base and we got to show those petty Rebels what happens when you try to eliminate civilians' freedoms with acts of terrorism. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif

About JTL. What are the new advantages of the expansion. like, how many new things can you do. someone here told me that its pretty much like flying through space. I dont think that I could believe that, flying through the SW galaxie!! How long would that take!!!

How many new things can you do in the expansion? I don't know that I am sure what you are specifically asking, but there are four new professions that were added with the expansion: Rebel Pilot, Neutral Pilot, Imperial Pilot and Shipwright.
The three kinds of pilot are all similar, but each has a different set of ships of course. And the ships have different pros and cons. The TIE variations are generally faster than the other ships, but can suffer from less shielding and weapon compliment. Rebel ships are usually slower, but have stronger shields.
There are also different commands for each Pilot class that you can program into your droids. They all basically have performance modifiers, but have independent other kinds of commands as well.
Shipwright is of course the ship builder profession.
Two races: Sollustan and Ithorian are only accessible once you get JTL.
Umm, you dogfight, go on missions, pick up parts from ships you destroy in space and you can sell them at auction on a planet.
You can fly through space. The space area is really big around each planet. There are nebulae and asteroid fields. I have been to see and defended the Imperial Star Destroyer out in the badlands. One thing that is pretty fun is if you or your friend has a multiplayer ship like a "Millennium Falcon" [YT-1300 I think they are called], the Ace Neutral ship, or an Imperial Decimator, you can all go up into battle and two people man the gun turrets while a pilot or a pilot/co-pilot take care of the flying and repairs.
I like it at least. The Space portion of the game is almost entirely different from the Land game. Some people don't care for the space part, some the land, and some don't care for either.
To each their own. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif Did that answer any of your questions? If not, please say so.

And short hyperjumps if you find yourself accidentally in a nest of space gundarks. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif
It can get pretty exciting when you get into a battle and then you find some extra ships start coming in to aid the people you are attacking. There have certainly been a few times when I got overpowered in the heat of battle, punched in the coordinates for a quick in-system hyperjump to get myself out of a mess without ending up at the morgue. Heh. It can get kind of nerve-racking if your navcomputer isn't very fast at calculating the coordinates and you are watching the enemy quickly disect your deflector shields! It's darn fun though.

some friends of mine came up with a good idea. buy a large house, set it up in the middle of no where and have a "fight club" type tournament every week or so. have an entry fee and the winner get's half the money, competition holders get the other half.

That is a good idea, make sure you make it on a server where no one else has that event.

Thanks for the info, another question. Can you fly your ship from space through the atmosphere of a planet and land (like, your controlling it) or does the computer do it for you

In order to go from space to planetside you have to dock with an orbital space station. You request to land and then you "zone" into the spaceport on the planet.
