I'm watching my Special Extended FOTR dvd, on the second appendice Peter Jackson explains how George Lucas and Rick Mccallum helped in the pre-visualization on LOTR.

He really does have his hands in just about every big movie.

I somehow missed that, which one is it on?

Besides the fact he helped in the pre-visualization process, nobody would have given Jackson the money if Star Wars hadn't shown that epic trilogies can be HUGELY sucessful.

This is interesting, TK. What did they help him with, the end battles, or what?

I know that Skywalker Sounds had to have a part in the making of the Rings trilogy, although I scoured the end credits of ROTK and found no mention of Skywalker Sound or ILM. I heard the famous Lucasfilm scream (stormtrooper falling into the chasm when Luke or Leia shoots him, Brotherhood fighter getting blown up in Last Crusade, Naboo guard getting shot in Theed hanger, Naboo man falling off Coruscant landing platform in AOTC, ect.) not only in TT but at least twice in ROTK. I think this was dubbed the Wilhelm Scream, though I'm not sure why.

They helped them develope video animatics for several sequences.

Oh, I see. I can see how the end battles of TT and ROTK at least would need pre-video-visualization.

Not just the end battles, but several sequences, like the Balrog sequences, the scene where Saruman is on top of Orthanc trying to bring down the mountian in FOTR.

I'm sure LOTR would've been made without the pre-vis animatics, but I don't think it would look quite as good.

Yeah, I heard on the grapevine that ILM showed the WETA boys how to go about making the previz stuff a while ago. Jason Schleifer came and did a lecture here at the uni for an animation festival and mentioned it I think. Couldn't afford to go to the lecture though.

I will say that ILM probably has told lots of people how to do effects and everything. Everyone shares their techniques, so it wasn't a secret that the guys worked side by side on some stuff.

What's good is that GL didn't help with the writing...*whew!*

Anyway, yeah talk about grave digging, this topic is nearly 2 years old.

Isn't this a little late for a correction? It was two years ago...

My appendix comes with a special making-of featurette. Sucks when someone jams it in the DVD player though. Ouch. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif
