Has anybody heard of this and/or know what it is?

It's in the latest issue of PC Zone and it looks fantastic. It's the latest attempt at a Star Wars RTS but it looks like they got it right this time. Looks like it's not just ground based either because I saw some pics of a rather nifty looking Stardestroyer.

EDIT:
IESB have that issue of PC Zone apparently because those are scans of the pics.

Yes, and I'm SO looking forward to it. There's an article over at Rebelscum:

http://www.rebelscum.com/article.asp?i=88774

I really liked Force Commander and I hope it's similar, though the possibility to control Star Destroyers sounds awesome! That's something I've been looking forward to.

There's a preview at 1up.com with some early screenshots:

http://www.1up.com/do/previewPage?cId=3137719

I must say that this sounds WAY better than both Force Commander and Galactic Battlegrounds. There are some 20 planets, and the ability to blockade and invade planets etc. sounds awesome! I especially like that the surviving troops is all you got after a battle.

It looks as if this game is what Galactic Battlegrounds should have been from the beginning.

Wow, that sounds great! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif I also thought FoComm was great, although I realise we're probably in a minority there. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif I had always hoped the sequel would be Fleet Commander, looks like this comes close. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif

Ooooh! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/drool.gif

Check this one out:

There's an Acclamator in there (not even sure which side it's on...), and also one of those Star Destroyers is a Victory-class ship. WOW! This looks great. I wonder if there will be a custom mission option with enough flexibility to do post-ROTJ scenarios and pit Star Destroyers against Star Destroyers (NRN vs. Imperial Navy or Empire vs. warlords...)?

I assume there will be Interdictors and old Venator-class Star Destroyers in there, dare we hope for Vindicator-class Cruisers and Class II Frigates? Or maybe some of the Dreadnoughts and Battlecruisers mentioned in recent ICS and ITW books (Praetor, Procurator and Mandator classes)...

http://www.starwars.com/gaming/videogames/...ws20050121.html (http://www.starwars.com/gaming/videogames/news/news20050121.html)

It's scheduled for release this fall, a long wait, but I'm sure it'll rock!

Hmm. Interesting article, thanks for the link, Magnus. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>Set a few years before the events of Episode IV A New Hope, the game will let players witness aftermath of Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith, including the creation of the Rebel Alliance, and Darth Vader's rise to power. Star Wars: Empire at War is scheduled for a release in Fall 2005 from LucasArts.[/b][/quote]
Hmm. Interesting, this puts it in pretty wide-open terrain continuity-wise...

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>Using an entirely new game engine created by the Las Vegas-based developer Petroglyph[/b][/quote]
This could be good news, I don't know...

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>the game will feature beautifully rendered land and space battles set on memorable planets such as Hoth, Tatooine and Dagobah as well as never-before-seen environments taken directly from the Star Wars films and expanded universe novels[/b][/quote]
Uh, the Battle of Dagobah? style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huh.gif That could be a reference to the battle between Yoda and that Bpfasshi Dark Jedi, but I doubt that, since if the Empire had known of Dagobah, he wouldn't be hiding there. More likely Dagobah is one of the "alternate timeline" options they were talking about...

I wonder what the EU locations will be. And maybe some all-new planets, like in Force Commander...

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>strategic and tactical elements from previous events will have a permanent effect on the galaxy.[/b][/quote]
That sounds great. Probably a bit like Rebellion, but I've never had the chance to play that one.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>As players build, manage and progress their space and ground-based units, troops and vehicles, memorable Star Wars hero characters will begin playing a role in key situations.[/b][/quote]
That sounds great. Based on the wording, it sounds as if they'll probably introduce new characters, as well as familiar ones from within the established continuity.

That's the angle of the images. They won't look that good when you see them properly. One of the images is a nice example of that - the Stormtroopers foot is in fact a rectangular box with gouraud shading applied. Don't get me wrong, it does look real nice but this is an RTS. It's not about the graphics and once you see it moving you'll relize that.

This'll be a good game of all the Star Wars toys you couldn't fit in your chest. After all, thats all an RTS is. And it's gonna be great! Peeow, bang, boosh!

Yeah but it won't be out until the end of the year. By then, what looks it has now will have diminished. We're in for a new era of graphics this year - 2005 will see the preview of the new consoles and technologies like Unreal 4 Billion and ten.

Presumably the Empire kept using Acclamator-class ships for some time after the Clone Wars. I'd also expect to see Venator-class Star Destroyers as well as the Imperial- and Victory-class vessels seen in the screenshots...

For that matter, there's a reference to what sounds like an Acclamator being used in the liberation of Coruscant from the Yuuzhan Vong in The Unifying Force, 30 years after ROTJ...

Master Magnus

There's another article with some new screenshots over at Gamesradar. The site is kinda annoying, but the screenshots are great.

http://gamesradar.msn.co.uk/news/default.a...bsectionid=1589 (http://gamesradar.msn.co.uk/news/default.asp?pagetypeid=2&articleid=33948&subsectionid=1589)

About the Acclamators, my guess is that the Empire mothballed those ships and kept as reserve.

EDIT: Oh, I just found out that Empire At War has been given a site over at LucasArts:

http://www.lucasarts.com/games/swempireatwar/

There's not much yet, but there are screenshots and concept art. Some of the screenshots are really beautiful (especially the first pic).

If it is at all like the new "Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle Earth" game, that is made by and uses the new Generals engine (Command and Conquer), than we are in for a real treat. These games don't have to look that great, as LOTR:BFME illustartes, they just have to have great combat abilities. The space battles are an interesting addition as well. I fear that they won't be as cool as is possible. I doubt you will be able to jump in reinforcements, set up interdictor stategies to trap enemies. They might not even utalize the full aspect of "3-d" space, only allowing the ships to fly in one level, as if imaginary ground were in place. So you probably won't be able to fly under or above openents, firing from 4 positions. I wonder if they will even intergrate battle formations, and realistic engaements, as described in the books or in films. Example, a Star Destroyer has to "pull up beside something" exposing its entire side to the enemy, to have the greatest firepower, because of the most batteries being down the length of the vessel. More than likely it will just "fire" from the front, and the lasers will turn directions, regardless for the most part, of the vessels position. Don't get me wrong. This game looks like it is going to rock, but I wish they could incorporate all the things we read in see in there. I will definately get it. More to follow...

I did see the bulbous Imperial Inderdictors in the screenshots. However, that does not necessarily mean they will interdict, or inderdict as we know it, perhaps they simply have given then a similar "special weapon" of some kind. They have described the game as different than other RTS's previously. But does this mean that you will be able to call up reinforcements from another "map" or sector of space, at will, when your current engagements are going badly? I doubt it, but it would be awesome if they could pull it off. Like I mentioned earlier this game looks to be a Star Wars version of LOTR: Battle for Middle Earth, with the addition of space... "maps". In Battle for Middle Earth you keep your armies from previous battles, like described in Empire at War. Perhaps like in BFME, you have to hold your position with the fleet that you have, until reinforcements are available. In BFME after the reinforcement timer runs down, you can choose to never call that army in, by not pressing the button. Perhaps Empire at War will use something like this, since the games appear to be mirrored so extensively. Time will tell, we have a while to wait, unfortunately. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/banghead.gif

Swamprat_Jedi_Knight

I just looked through the screen-shots again, and there are quite a few new ones. This game looks a lot more promising with these new shots. Looks like we will see TIE's and X-Wings, to kick up the battle a notch, allong with Y-Wings, and TIE bombers. It's good they have fighters, otherwise it wouldn't look like a Star Wars engagement. I also noticed in a couple shots, that the ships have "shields" and "weapons" health meters, and from some of the shots, it looks almost like you can taget the weapon implacements on the hulls.
The coolest thing of all I noticed, is that space appears to have some depth in it. Allowing ships to be in different plains, and engage each other. Rather than most space games, where everything is one a single plain. That factor will surely add to the strategy. I hope they throw in a few more surprises, so that space battles don't necessarily come down to who has the most ships, but who can command them, and stratagies the best. This keeps getting better and better. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/happydance.gif

Good, I never liked Galactic Battlegrounds simply because an AOE engine doesn't really belong in a Star Wars game.

There's a new, really, really nice video trailer of EaW at the LucasArts website:

I thought this is supposed to be a mix of Galactic Battlegrounds/Force Commander and Rebellion. Unfortunately I don't think there are going to tons of planets to fight on because they would have to do a lot of level (planet) making. I would be awesome if it was a 3D Rebellion!!! with updated galaxy and correct map of galaxy!

Did anyone else play Sierra's Homeworld 2 that was release a couple of years ago? The screens I've seen of the space combat in Empire at War really remind me of the 3D gameplay of Homeworld.

Empire at War screen (http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/starwarsrts/screens.html?page=25)

There was even a player-made Star Wars mod for it:

LucasArts has "opened" the EaW site (I find it the wording a bit strange since it has been opened for quite some time, but perhaps there is a new layout and content, I haven't checked...) at:

They've got some interesting info on the site. Like the (hopefully) incomplete planet list. From what I've gathered Han and Chewie are a duo hero, like they only fight with each other as one unit.

I do like the prospect of having the likes of Kyle Katarn and Mara Jade on the field in the same game as normal canon characters like Vader and Kenobi. Good integration of the EU.

I read a Preview on Gamespot and it said there was at least 100 planets in the game. I have a feeling it will be massive.

^A hundred? Wow... I'm really looking forward to this one.

EDIT: Found it. It's a recent article (posted November 30th). They're promising nearly 100 different battlefields:
