<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>Top ten Film Special Effects
1 Star Wars - opening shot (1977)
2 King Kong - ending (1933)
3 The Thing - spider head (1982)
4 Jason and the Argonauts - skeletons fighting (1963)
5 Terminator 2: Judgment Day - the T-1000 (1991)
6 Forbidden Planet - Krell machinery (1956)
7 The Lord of the Rings trilogy - Gollum (2001-2003)
8 The Matrix - bullet-time scenes (1999)
9 Alien - John Hurt chest burster scene (1979)
10 Spider-Man 2 - train fight between Spiderman and Dr Octopus (2004)[/b][/quote]
I like the fact that this selection gives credit to true groudbreaking achievements in sfx history and not just the most spectacular ones.
But for myself intead of spiderman 2 I would have choose the nighcrawler debut scene in XMEN-2 which is way more technical imho.

Um... The movie came out in 1977. How could the scene have been shot in 1979? style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/chortle.gif

i don't see how gollum was an amazing achievement, it was pretty much the same thing as jar jar style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/giveup.gif
and i agree, nightcrawler was a lot more of an achievement then the spiderman movies

From a certain point of view you are right about jar jar and gollum, but I think that the achievment of weta with gollum was to perfectly combine stop motion technic with cgi animation, which isn't the case when it comes to jar jar. And also the delivered performance is way more powerful when it comes to gollum.
What I mean by all that is that in the field of cgi characters, gollum has become the new standard while jar jar was only the first step, in a way it's like the Ilm's glass knight of young sherlock holmes and the T-1000: one was a first timer while the other pushed the same concept further.
Just my 2 cents on it.

I think that Jar Jar looked more realistic than Gollum. In fact, I think the digital effects in LOTR is inferior to the CG effects in the SW prequels.
But it was fun that SW came in first place (though the year is wrong).
