The last one I went to was Arch Enemy. What a f**king blast that was. I do a band aswell and would like to hear from others who are doing band stuff.

I'm surprised this thread never took off. I'm not exactly a metalhead, but I have my moments.

I found this cool site that has TONS of metal album cover art and a few not-so-metal covers as well. Definitely worth a look.

I used to be a metal head, now I am fairly eclectic in my musical tastes. I guess my fondest memory of heavy metal has to be playing pinball with James Hetfield in Arlington Texas about two hours before the show. We got his autograph and had our a$$es handed to us on the pinball game. Metallica had played Fort Worth the week before, but was back in town with some lame a$$ band called "gods of metal" they weren't even given a chance to play their set. People were throwing things and most of the crowd was chanting "F you, go home" until a beer hit the guitarist in the chest. At that point they walked off stage waving everyone's favorite finger at the audience.

I followed the band back and forth across the SW states for a couple of years on the Master of Pupets and Justice for All tours. Pantera brings back some foggy but cool memories as well.

If I may comment on one specific, sharyntyre ... what pinball table was it?

Stumbled across a metal encyclopedia. The have a good break down of the different metal genres, tons of band entries, and I think it's a really good place to browse if you're new to metal.

Didn't quite find what I was looking for, but I did come across a band called Mastodon that I'm really digging. Anyone?

And some news from last month, Metallica starts recording March 12.

That I did not know.

As for that band, Mastodon, i've never heard of them but i've been meaning to try some new metal so perhaps i'll give them a listen this weekend.

I'm sure it will be different than St. Anger, which is all I can really hope for. St. Anger was okay, but my least favorite. Not enough personality.

Rick Rubin is producing. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rick_Rubin

Okay. So I am mostly into old metal from say the 70's into early 90's Pantera (except for Hair metal). Anyway, I'm a huge Pantera fan and I saw that a band fronted by Phil Anselmo with Rex Brown on bass is coming to my area. They're called Down, is it worth it to go see?

Horse_Head
03-03-2007, 02:34 PM
Down has been a side project (during the Pantera years) of theirs (Phil and Rex) since the mid 90's... They are both incredible so the show should be good... (although I myself have never seen them live, that I can remeber) anyway there's some clips here...

I'm not going. I'd have to travel to San Antonio or Dallas anyways. If I was more of a metal head than maybe I'd reconsider.

On another topic, does anyone's local radio stations play Mandatory Metallica? We get it in Houston every weeknight at 10PM. They usually play three Metallica songs in a row. No real guidelines (that I can see) on which ones they play. Last night it was Battery, Stone Cold Crazy and Some Kind of Monster.

Yeah, Pantera kicks ass! I really like the new project Vinne Paul has going with some of the guys from Mudvayne and Nothingface. Mudvayne and Nothingface are pretty fantastic too. I've been playing some of that sort of stuff recently. I learned Walk not too long ago, and tonight, I learned Ether by Nothing face.

Yeah, I figured it's probably for casual metal heads who are thinking about coming more rooted in the genre but need some sort of quick sweep to highlight some goodies.

In other words, it's for me. :D Don't know if I want to spend the money on the Amp style set, though. I'll probably wait for a cheaper everyman version.

If you're a fan. Do not miss it! They dug out tracks that they haven't played in 20-25 years. We're talking 'Moonchild' as the first encore and 'Rime of the Ancient Mariner' in it's entirety! It's the third time I've seen them, but by far the best set list!
