As a 26 year old Star Wars fan, I am utterly embarrassed to ask this. However, it would be worse if I never asked or asked later, right? I'm ashamed I don't know this but here goes nothing...

In ROTJ, after confirming to Luke Darth Vader is his father, he says "unfortunate this is." Luke asks "unfortunate that I know the truth?" And Yoda replies something like "unfortunate that you rush to face him, that you complete with your training."

To be blunt, what exactly does this mean?

Why is it unfortunate that he completes his training? Didn't he want Luke to complete his training? Didn't he already say that he must confront Vader to truly become a jedi?

Or did he actually say "...that you rushED to face him..." referring to how he left early last time before his training was finished? Or is Yoda just referring to the timing. He's dying and realizes Luke HAS to rush to face Vader. Then Yoda goes on to say that Luke was not ready for the burden. Is this burden? That he has to face him now and is not truly ready? That he has to do it alone? Or was he just not ready to accept that Vader is his father when he found out (in ESB)?

I know that's a lot to ask but it has been bugging me for way too long now.

If someone is bored and kind enough to fill me in on something I should already know, please reply!

The line is, according to the screenplay :

Yoda: (gathering all his strength) No. Unfortunate that you rushed to face him...that incomplete was your training. Not ready for the burden were you.

So he basically said that it was unfortunate Luke hadn't completed his training before he fought Vader.

You are gonna kick yourself when I explain this. First, you are confused about the dialogue, here is the exchange (from my memory style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/satisfied.gif )

Luke: Master, Yoda, is Darth Vader my father?

Yoda: (dodging the question)
Sleep I must, yes...

Luke: Master Yoda, I must know...

Yoda: Your father he is...... told you did he?

Luke nods

Yoda: Unexpected this is, and unfortunate.

Luke: Unfortunate that I know the truth?

Yoda: No, no! Unfortunate, that you rushed to face him, that, incomplete was your training, that not ready for the burden were you.

So, your first problem is that you don't know the correct dialogue. It is sometimes hard to tell what they are saying, to find out for certain, either buy a copy of the screenplay or turn on the subtitles next time you watch the movie.
The burden that Yoda is referring to is the burden of knowing that Vader was his father, he wasn't ready to learn that. It was wrong for Luke to rush to rescue his friends because he wasn't ready for the truth about his father, he wasn't mature enough to handle it. And, it was wrong because was motivated by anger and the desire for revenge, making him easy prey for the Dark Side of the Force. It was his destiny to confront Vader eventually, but only after he was mature enough to take on the heavy responsibility. Hope this helps!

Thanks guys! I think I get it now. I appreciate you taking the time to fill me in on something I should have understood a long time ago.

Except that I can't turn on the subtitles! Not until 2005...or whenever ROTJ is put on DVD. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

mtilden, why did you answer his question when I already answered it? lol

When I began writing my answer, there weren't any other responses. But when I finished writing it (took me about 20 minutes to write and edit it) and I posted it, it was under yours. So, I guess we posted our answers at about the same time. Pretty cool huh?

Ooops! I forgot this!!! How old is your tv? Any tv made after about 1993 includes an option to show the 'close captions for the hearing impaired' just fiddle with your remote long enough and you'll find it. If your tv isn't older than 1993, it will have this feature, I guarantee it, because there is a federal law making it mandatory.

He meant it was unfortunate that he didnt complete his training and rushed off to save his friends when ultimatley he made no differnce at all, And he was not ready to know the truth about his father or even face him. And at that point he was more suseptable to the darkside,He was meant to eventually face Vader but not at that point . And they nearly paid since in ROTJ he stated that he could not face him but desired to turn him.

Hope this was what you where lookin for.

There are lots of different places that you can go to find them. The Jedi bendu script site is probably the best place to go online for them. They are also available in print, there is the Star Wars: Annotated Screenplays for the original trilogy, and there are seperate editions for each of the movies. "The Art of Star Wars: Attack of the Clones" includes the AOTC screenplay, and the TPM screenplay is available in a seperate illustrated edition. Look at Amazon.com or Barnes and Noble.com and you'll find lots of different editions.

The reason why he said that is because they wanted luke to complete his tranning and become a jedi so he could kill vader the first fight and that would not give vader any time to tell luke that he was his father. Yoda said that cause basically they wanted luke to kill vader asap so he could not find out that he was his father.

What? No, He wanted Luke to be a complete Jedi first, because then he could have handled Vader better. Yoda knew that Vader was going to try and seduce him, mostly by saying he was his dad. Yoda wanted Luke to be able to conquer his fear and anger first, before he faced him.

Yoda gave the reason why he said it.

"Unfortunate that you rush to face him. That you complete with your training. That... not ready for the burden you are."

^Something like that.

Basically, Mann is right.
