View Full Version : Winter

I am in the middle of Destiny's Way and was wondering about something...Winter has a photographic (or holographic if you prefer) memory. She was Leia's personal aide for a good amount of time. Theoretically, wouldn't that mean that Winter could possibly know some very sensitive things? If she was so close to Leia, she may have learned some important government secrets along the way. If she had, you would think she would be portrayed as a more important character. The government would take more precautions in guarding her from capture by any enemy. I was just wondering what everyone else thought about Winter's absence in many novels.

I found it rather annoying. Perhaps it is just that it was decided that her character would settle down and let herself fade right back into the woodwork. Its rather sad that she was always considered nothing more then the aide and babysitter. She could have been more...

I don't Winter is unhappy though. I think She enjoyed the quiet time away from all the politics.

yes, and you think she knew of the attack on anoth when ackbar said he couldnt stay, she wanted so much for him to stay, but maybe she just needed company because she missed tyco

I like winter. The snow is always so beautiful, and lots of fun to sled on. Even the leafless trees are beautiful when they are covered with snow, amidst a snowy woods.

Most people don't like winter because it's cold, and some people say it's depressing, but when it snows it's just magical. I love it.

Well, for one thing, I don't think that Leia's enemies knew particularly much about her staff, especially not about Winter's photographic memory (which was a closely guarded secret that few people within Leia's circles knew about).

So, I don't think that her memory was that closely guarded because only her family and friends knew about her little gift. Handy little position. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

Why, if you had a photographic memory would you want to be involved in the front lines of a war? She witnessed all the things in the OT, a little of before and of the after. It was implied in DW that she has backed out of the limelight if you will, because of all the memories she has of war and death. I'd do the same.

Its true she was very important during the rebellion, but now in the new rebublic she just a assistant. I would think that she could be more useful somewhere else, handling a bigger load than Leia's and Han's kids diapers.

Winter! I like her! hehe..note: my avatar. Anyways, I think I would do the same if I was her, stay away from politics, but she could've been more..but she chose not to I guess. I still think she should have been more important though.

Indeed. I think Winter's holgraphic memory is very little-known. Also, I think Mon Cal was considered fairly safe when she went there when Tycho returned to active duty.

Other than that, she's perhaps my favourite EU character, it really is too bad she didn't get more time in the NJO, IMO. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif

I like Winter, but her, like a lot of other characters, got lost for a lot of years. Iella and Wedge, Wraith Squadron, Corran and Mirax. There have been lots of good characters that didn't make it over the years, due to bad storylines, or they were just forgotten.

I wouldn't put Corran in the forgotten box. He played an important role in Final Prophecy.

I always got the impression Winter was more of a "servant" type, or a glorified babysitter. I didn't care much for her character.

I think that Winter is one of the many under-developed characters in the EU ... there seems to be so much there capable of being mined but for whatever reason authors have not wanted to take her character that step further.

I haven't read the comics which means that I am not aware of her "roots" in the EU, but I was disappointed that the relationship between her and Tycho was not given more space in the x-wings, and that her role in DW was not much more than her role in the Thrawn Trilogy - she had stepped up from Nanny to private nurse.

Such a waste of potential.

Let me . . . refine what I said. He Had a big part in the end but before the NJO started, after I, Jedi (Chronologicaly, in the EU) he kinda dissapeared. But maybe it wasn't so bad with Corran, I guess it wasn't that bad that he was missing. But I would have liked to read more about Mirax, Booster, and . . . oh whats their names? Corrans kids? Anyways, I really think that the Iella-Wedge relationship, Wraith Squadron, even Winter should have been written more into. Another interesting thing that Michael Stackpole talks about like Tim Zahn talked about the Outbound Flight Project, is Hal Horn, Nejaa Halcyon, CorSec, and The Jedi Era on Corellia. Mike should consider making a Clone Wars Novel based on Corellia at its highpoint.

I think Winter's main job was as body guard, which makes her pretty important, her cover was just assistant, nanny, and nurse. While holding those positions she could be exposed to information that could be really helpful to the New Republic/Galactic Alliance. Visiting big-wigs thinking her just a "servant" may not guard what they are saying. She played a crucial part in liberating Coruscant.

However, I would have liked to read more about Winter and Tycho and Wedge and Iella. But I guess their stories weren't relevant to the X-Wing Series.

I'm still hoping that there'll be a pre-ANH novel or series about Leia. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif If there is, I really hope Winter plays an important role in it. It's really rather hard to imagine how she wouldn't...

BTW, is anyone else interested in an Unofficial Winter Fan Club? style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif

Sorry if this offends Winter fans, but I find her to be the most boring character in all of of Star Wars EU, and one of the only two characters I cannot understand why their are any fans for her.(other being Hobbie)

Nah, I'm not offended. I'm not even surprised, really. I realise that there's not much about Winter in the EU, so it's easy not to find her interesting, but I do think there's a lot of potential in her.

I think part of it is that I'm a hopeless Leia fan (she's without doubt my favourite SW character), and Winter and Leia's friendship adds a very interesting depth to their characters. Too bad it hasn't been explored much yet. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif *cough* fanfic time! *cough* I even recall Carrie Fisher being quoted as saying Leia needed a close female friend to give her more character development opportunities. EU to the rescue! Too bad they haven't picked up on it much. Although I think part of it is that the sort of very personal dialogue that would have had to be between Leia and Winter pre-ESB is mostly picked up by Han and Luke in the New Republic era...

But I still say Winter is greatly underappreciated. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif

I also found Winter to be rather boring. With the exception of the Jedi Academy Trilogy she really hasn't played to big a part in EU. She played a minor role in the X-Wing Series but of course she will get over-shadowed in that series with characters like Wedge, Corran, and Isard there.

She played a fairly important part in the Thrawn trilogy.

a little with the Mara Jade deal in Coruscant, but I wouldn't call it important. She just watched Mara Jade and told Leia that she didn't trust her.

She was actualy kinda interesting in the X-Wing comics. She went on missions, had a life.... Then she decided being a nanny and having no personality at all was more fun than being a commando.

I definitely agree that the X-wing series were the best for Winter showing her personality. I also loved her cameo in Rebel Dawn. That was the high point of the HST for me. I thought she was very well-written in it, and it showed some of sensitivity and her inner feelings. It also suggested that even then her holographic memory left her with memories she'd rather not have...

Then she decided being a nanny and having no personality at all was more fun than being a commando.

Maybe not more fun, although being a commando has its downside (i.e. getting shot at style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif), but she probably wanted to be around Leia and work as her assistant. And she didn't exactly get much chance to show a personality in the early Bantam-era EU. We never got to see her in a more personal conversation with Leia for any length of time. And her relationship with Tycho was ongoing, there must have been things going on there: we don't know why it took them so long to get married. I would tend to assume it must have been that she and Tycho didn't want to commit to marriage because of the risks involved in his career with Rogue Squadron, and her duties protecting the Solo kids kept them apart for a while...

And then there's the issue of her absence in HoT. Why, Zahn, why? style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif My pet theory is that she was on maternity leave. Apparently some of the kids at Luke and Mara's wedding still haven't been identified... style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huh.gif

But I'll leave all discussion of Leia Celchu to the fanfic forum... style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif

Actualy it would be kinda cool to see what she and Tycho were up to during the New Republic era when they both don't appear in any of the novels (anyone know which ones are those?), Stackpole or Allston could write a book about it and it culd have sort of the same tone as the X-wing books. They were probably off on missions together.

Soontir Solo
08-27-2004, 10:04 AM
I doubt they were on a mission. Tycho was a pilot, and Winter was more of a spy/infiltrator. Tycho was involved in pretty much everybook, even if he wasn't mentioned. Plus Winter was protecting the Solo Twins, and then Anakin for who knows how long. I would say they only saw eachother a few times a year for probably a 10 year span. After the Hand of Thrawn Trilogy they were probably with eachother all the time because Tycho retired. But once NJO got going Tycho came back into the military and Winter went off with Ackbar.
