Science Fiction anyone?
Here are my top 10 picks (in no particular order).
> Blade Runner
> 2001: A Space Odyssey
> Road Warrior
> The Thing (1982)
> The Andromeda Strain
> Alien
> The Matrix
> The Shining
> Brazil
> Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)
PS. I'm not the only one who can't wait until Friday (Minority Report), am I?

Aw, common, please tell me I'm wrong when I say there aren't any other Sci-Fi fans on this message board.

Daniel, you are wrong.
Okay, the 5 Star Wars films would normally take up the first 5 slots, but here are my picks (in no particular order). *Come to think of it, the ones on my list are the only Sci-Fi films I have seen that I liked.
E.T. (first movie I saw in a theater, ROTJ was the 2nd)
Armageddon
Terminator
Terminator 2
Men In Black
Independence Day
The Matrix
The Star Trek: First Contact
Aliens
Predator
The 5th Element
I am psyched about Minority Report too!
On another note….
I just saw 2001: A Space Odyssey and it was one of the most boring films that I have ever seen. *I guess I don't get it. *I thought that Kubriak was supposed to be a genius. *I suppose the film was ahead of it's time, but boring still. *Had it not been for the "Nature Boy" theme music, I don't think I could have watched it. *I mean, the space scenes were okay given the "realness" about them, but the other parts like monotone dialogue (or lack of dialogue in places) just didn't suit me well. *I want to hear sounds in Sci-Fi films, not silence. *I am sure space isn't one big loud sound factory, but films of my time have spoiled me to want more than reality when it comes to science fiction.
Another thing, I have seen the Star Trek films and they are absent from my list because I didn't like them (all except 1).

Lets see, my top ten list would be
Godzilla, King of the Monsters
The Planet of the Apes (with Charlston Heston)
Independence Day
Terminator
The Road Warrior
Mad Max
Terminator II
Jaws (its sci-fi isn't it)
The Omega Man
The Stand(miniseries TV movie)
Dawn of the Daed
Not nessecarily in that order.

The Star Trek film with the Borg
Gee, which one? Seems like every one of 'em clashes with the old cybernetic Clear Channel cube nowadays. Bo-ring. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sleeping.gif
Oh, and Zarathustra was around long before the Nature Boy. And ol' Z woulda kicked some McMahon arsch, too. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/alien.gif
Oh, let's see...
I) Episode IV
II)Episode V
III)Episode VI
IV)Episode I
V)Episode II
VI)Jurassic Park
VII)The Matrix
VIII)The Black Hole (Hey, Maximillian was cool)
IX)Star Trek First Contact
X)Galaxy Quest
And I must admit it's rare for someone to dislike every Trek flick EXCEPT the first one.

I can see why some people would need a strong cup of coffee while watching 2001, but I am one of those people who loved it. I know that the smart robot thing in outer space has been done over and over, but in 1968, it hadn't been. the film was quite original and brilliant when it came out, and I think it still holds to the test of time. Though I personally do not hold to the theory of evolution, I found it very interesting how Kubric and Clarke used the Monolith idea as a catalist for huge leaps and bounds in human (and all other) development. The thing I really love about the film is the last 20 or 30 minutes, the part where Boweman goes inside the monolith and becomes one with it. It's just so bizarre and the music is very erie, plus, I love the main theme from the film. It is one of the the best pieces of film music I've ever heard. While I love action packed films with little or no respect for the laws of physics and/or common sense, I still to this day long for that silent space and harsh realism that is 2001: A Space Odyssey.
PS. Kubrick was a genius, watch some of his other films. I dont think you'll be dissapointed. The Shining is the best horror film, period (in my opinion of course).

DanielSkywalker - I totally agree about The Shining-it scared the bejesus out of me. If you didn't like 2001, try watching Full Metal Jacket. That's probably Kubrick's best film for people that "don't get" 2001. If you can stand the black and white, I would also suggest Dr. Strangelove, but that's not for everyone. Anyways, my top ten:
1. The Matrix
2. Terminator 2
3. Starship Troopers (I wish they would make more movies based on Heinlein books style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif )
4. 2001: A Space Oddyssey
5. The Fifth Element
6. Final Fantasy: The Spirit Within
7. Stargate
8. Transformers: The Movie (yah childhood!)
9. A.I.
10. Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan (KHAN!) (I would add this is the only Star Trek film I've ever seen)
Honorable mention: The Postman (but only because of the book)

What in the world was I thinking? I can't believe I left out 12 Monkeys. when i saw that movie for the first time, I think I peed my pants. Looks, like you like Terry Gilliam's (Brazil, 12 Monkeys) stuff, Nelson. And, yes, tunafishman, Dr. Strangelove and Full Metal Jacket are also two great Kubrick films. If anyone ever mentions to me that they are considering inlisting in the military, I tell them to watch Full Metal Jacket first before making that decision.

I did like 12 Monkeys. I forgot about that one. Space Balls ruled!!! Funniets space movie of all time!
I will rent the other Kubriak films and give him a chance. I will tell y'all what I thought of the other Kubriak films after I watch them. It is obvious that he was creative and I admire creativity, hence my love for SW.

I put them down in no particular order. I didn't feel like thinking about how each film should be ranked... They're all great in my mind.
Metropolis (1927)
E.T. the Extra-terrestrial
THX-1138
Alien
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
2001: A Space Odyssey
A.I.: Artificial Intelligence (Would've liked to seen Kubrick's version of the film, but Spielberg made a great tribute to his friend.)
Star Trek: Insurrection
The Terminator (One of Cameron's best films, not including the one about a certain shipwreck...)
The Evil Dead III: Army of Darkness (Boomstick! )

I am psyched about Minority Report too!
I just saw it, and I certainly wasn't dissapointed at all. Minority Report was awesome, unlike Spielberg's previous film, A.I. It's more of a murder mystery than anything else, but it still has all of those great science fiction elements needed to make a great futuristic, big-brother, drama. This film not only delivers a grandiose vision of the future and a great story, but it also has a message. This combination of Phillip K. Dick and Steven Spielberg should not be missed, and I would recomend it to anyone who wants to see a film that actually makes you think rather than just deliver mind numbing entertainment.

Minority Report is an excellent film. I haven't seen Cruise do such a great acting job since 'Born on the Fourth of July'. I couldn't have described it better myself, Daniel. This is one of the most entertaining films I've seen in awhile. Kudos, Steven.

Gates, that's too bad that they already tooke AOTC out of your local theater. I live in Mobile, AL (it's always a pleasure to meet another southerner) and it's still playing here in mostly all of our theaters. I guess I should hurry up and watch it one more time before it's too late.
Quigonwindu, did you possibly download MIB2 off the interent, or are you just psychic?

I stand corrected. Spidey was in my theater up until Thursday. Then they ousted it to make room for the 2 new movies that came this weekend (MR, and Lilo and Stitch). Still, Spidey got 5 days extra. They should have replaced "DIVINE SECRET OF YA YA SISTERHOOD" and left AOTC there for another week. *sarcasm*

Heres my top ten in random order:
1) Aliens. (Really awesome movie. I thought this movie was a perfect sci-fi film. Too bad the sequels weren't as good.)
2)The Matrix (Well, I liked this one and I didn't like it. I liked the general plot and all, but it just wasn't my type of movie. However I still recognize the fact that it was a great sci-fi film.)
3)Independance Day( I just liked how the typical aliens attack the planet theme played out.)
4)Starship troopers (I was a big fan of the alien swarm idea, so this made my list)
5)Close encounters of the third kind(Simply a classic)
6)Space Balls(Yeah I had to put this somewhere, I have the tape and I used to watch it all the time.)
7)Men in Black(What can I say? I like a good sci-fi comedy)
8)Star Trek(The with the crazy guy who tries to get into that rift thing, deal with the next generation series)
9)Star Gate(Always been a fan of Egyption mythology, how can I not like a sci-fi movie about it?)
10)Galaxy Quest(Yet another good comedy)
There were a few others I wanted to add here... But I always have trouble remembering names...

Minority Report was awesome! *Is anyone interested in starting a thread to discuss this movie (spoilers included)? *Or should that be done on another board?

like an idiot, i started a similar thread in the trilogy section... i wasn't aware of this one. um. yeah. i'm new.
i find it odd that almost everyone everywhere seems to prefer aliens over alien three. alien three is my favorite of the series. shoot-em-up action gets tiresome. i love the atmosphere and cinematography of the third...
i've never seen thx-1138, but i'd really like to. it sounds like a cross between 1984 and the matrix.
empire strikes back is definitely among my favorite sci-fi... as is close encounters, twelve monkeys, dark city, e.t., a.i., a clockwork orange and the shining which are just barely sci-fi, but people have mentioned them so i'll go along... also a lot of anime like ghost in the shell, the patlabor movies, akira... yeah... 2001, blade runner... minority report...what am i missing?
i never did care for that summer blockbuster crap like men in black and independence day... (star wars and minority report are excluded because they aren't made to be summer blockbuster crap, only marketed as such.)
yeah. a lot of movies that are catagorized under sci-fi are really just crapty action movies in disguise. i don't care for those... although all those old cheesy schwarzinegger films like total recall and predator will always have a special place in my heart.
hey. i don't think anyone has mentioned robocop or robocop two... those are classics.

Well, I'm notoriously hard to please when it comes to sci-fi movies, but I'll try to think of ten sci-fi flicks that I really liked, so here goes...
Firstly, IMO Star Wars is not sci-fi, so it will not be included in my list even though they are my most favoritist ever.
(In no particular order...)
Blade Runner (OK, this is probably my second favorite movie ever)
A.I.
Minority Report
Spiderman
Alien (sorry Blizz, just the first one.)
Forbidden Planet (cool effects, even if it's a bit hokey nowadays.)
Day the Earth Stood Still
E.T.
Road Warrior
Godzilla movies (not the new one)

Oh gosh I only get to pick 10, well okeday, there are more, but here are just ten in no particular order.
Aliens (get away from her you b****) damn thats a great line.
Empire Strikes Back, the lighting in the carbon chamber is just fantastic, I love the colors of this film. Amazing.
First Contact (sorry Seanakin but I have to disagree, I love Picard and this venture with the Borg was just rockin, I mean Worf's line was just the best (If you were any other man I would kiiiiiiiiiill you where you stand!!!)
Spiderman I LOVE SAM RAIMI!!!!!! prob not sci fi, but I don't care it was an awesome movie. I wanna web swing!!!! (pout)
Battle beyond the Stars, John boy in space!!! hehe
Stargate, Daniel Jackson in both incarnations is just a hottie!
Terminator 2
Starship Troopers. Big bugs gettin squished YAAAAAAAY!!! I hate bugs.

Whereas I do feel Alien and Aliens are better films than the third one, I do agree that Alien 3 is awesome. The look and feel is great, the acting is "top notch", the score is superb, the tone is the darkest of the four films, and the directing is great as well. The reason this film is so good (and I too am surprised that many do not like this film at all) is because of the ingenious David Fincher (Seven, Fight Club); He truly is a great film-maker and I enjoy his other films as well. He has the ability to create an environment (often dark, dismal, and disturbing) so real that one feels like he/she is actually in it. I could go on and on about how good of a director Fincher is, but, I think I'll finish this post up now, and go watch Alien 3 again :D.

What is the big deal about The Matrix? Honestly. I mean, think about the film without the special effects. Pretty lame, right? I don't think the story could have held up all by itself. That's why, in my opinion, the only thing that saved this film were the special effects. How many of you actually care for the storyline?
DanielSkywalker
07-11-2002, 12:54 AM
You will see from my list that I go for the older, more classic Sci-Fi films, but The Matrix is one of my favourite films period. I had to include it on my list. I personally thought it had a great plot; I don't see what you didn't like about it. The special effects (which are great) are just a vehicle for the very original story. The film appeals to me on many different levels and I can't wait 'till the next two. The next two will develop the story further and I'm sure you will probably enjoy them more than the first one.
PS Plus, it had EXCELENT cinematography.
BL-17
07-11-2002, 01:19 AM
Hopefully I will enjoy the next two. I just don't like buying into the hype of things and for some reason, I just really don't care much for The Matrix at all... I did think the Agents were pretty cool, but that's beside the point. The plot was original up to a certain point. It's not like the whole "Machine-Taking-Over" thing hadn't been done before.
I totally agree with you on the cinematography. The scene in the subway was absolutely brilliant.
Master Jason
07-11-2002, 11:07 AM
Sure, the machines taking over the world has been done before. But that's where the cliche ends. You could almost make the arguement that why couldn't that be happening right now? How do you know for sure? Oh, I forgot one movie that I really liked, Willow. Cheesy, but there wasn't much sci-fi stuff worth watching at the time.

This is a difficult task: picking all-time top 10 sci-fi movies.
Of course, the 5 Star Wars films rate first, with Ep III probably being the best because of the events that must take place. After that, I'd say my list is:
1. Lord of the Rings
2. MIB (I & II)
3. Contact
4. Armageddon
5. 5th Element
6. Logan's Run
7. Planet of the Apes (Original)
8.Battlestar Galactica
9.Galaxy Quest
10. Space Balls
Honorable mention to the following:
Thumb Wars (would've made my top 10 but it was only 30 minutes long)
Stargate
Matrix
2010:The year we make contact
Star Trek: First Contact
Independence Day
Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (there were space scenes if you remember)

Okay, here some of the more obvious ones on my list:
1. Close Encounters - simply awesome, haunting, and brilliant special effects for its time.
2. E.T. - personally, one of the best films of all time.
3. Contact - very deep, Zemeckis' best film. I love his style.
4. Jurassic Park
5. Dune - I can't believe no one's mentioned it ...
Now for some stuff out of left field:
6. Frequency - a very good movie, though it seems a lot of people missed it. I highly recommend it. Not your typical time travel type of movie, it has a twist! Dennis Quaid is a great actor.
7. X Files: The Movie - solid, well conceived and well written. I didn't really X Files that much until I saw this movie, then I loved it!
8. The Abyss - another solid sci-fi film, the only one of Cameron's films I can list here.
9. Tron - admit it, some of you out there thought this was cool at the time.
10. V - actually a made-for-TV miniseries, this was a very cool sci-fi piece from the 80's. I loved it, and it uses a very interesting story parallel to the Nazis' rise to power. Basically, it's the aliens "we come in peace" then take over the world. Our heroes (and heroines) form a Resistance and fight back with strength and with brains. Kind of like Star Wars meets War of the Worlds.

This list is subject to change, as I have to dig deep into my memory to focus on my favorites. *As far as top ten for me, I think what makes my list are those that are thought-provoking and deep in symbolism, hidden meanings, and plot twists. *I think many if not most of my ten favorites deal with the search for enlightenment and meaning in the universe and the inner soul, and I enjoy the revelations and twists in those films.
I shall leave the Star Wars films from this list not because they are more fantasy than sci-fi, but because they would take up half of the numbers on this list.
In no real order:
1-Blade Runner
2-Total Recall
3-Contact
4-The Abyss
5-A.I. (To be honest, I found it dull and I actually, because I was very tired, fell asleep toward the end. *Yet I was impressed by the concepts and the atmosphere and mood of the story. I do want to see this again because I think it was superior to what I experienced when first seeing it. *How do I rate in the top ten a film I fell asleep during? *Go figure.)
6-Terminator 2
7-Close Encounters
8-Aliens
9-Silent Running
10-2010
P.S. Yes, TRON was visually incredible. The story too was very good. The best scene in that movie? The very last scene, of the "normal world's" city lights and street lines running off into the distance like the wires and lines in web space, hinting that our world too is just a larger model of the electronic world we created.
created world the film showed us in computer space.

8)Star Trek(The with the crazy guy who tries to get into that rift thing, deal with the next generation series)
That would be Star Trek: Generations. And, being a long-time Trek-fan, I'd have to say that it was one of the more disappointing Trek films, even though Kirk did go out with a *bang*.
Hmm... how many sci-fi films other than Star Wars have I actually seen?
Star Trek: First Contact (by far one of, if not the best ST movie produced)
Independence Day (the first Big Will sci-fi hit)
Men In Black (and here's the next one style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif)
Minority Report (whoa, it was that good)
The Matrix (looking forward to the sequels, though I doubt they'll be nearly as good)
Event Horizon (scary as hell, but good effects... still gives me nightmare, though)
X-Files (I actually tried to watch the series after seeing it, but that didn't pan out)
Galaxy Quest (though, it wasn't great, it's still a good parody)
Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (classic scenes with Kirk and Spock in S.F. as well as Chekov looking for "nuclear wessels")
Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones (my favorite at the moment)
Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (they should have just left Kirk there, and not brought him out for Generations)
----------------------------------------------------
There's my ten. As you can see, I did have a little bit of a Trek fix. But then again, those were all good movies.

5. Dune - I can't believe no one's mentioned it ...
I just saw Lynch's Dune on DVD for the first time in years. I don't think I had seen it all the way thru since 1985 or whenever it came out. I didn't like it back then, but this time I flipped! It's great, and far more interesting than the plastic miniseries they did a year or so back.
Trilogist
07-13-2002, 12:35 AM
yes, definitely one of the greats! I however, never saw it that long ago ... I only relatively recently saw it and liked it.
Did someone mention Back to the Future? Incidentally, the Back to the Future trilogy is on pre-sale for DVD without much fanfare. Anyone knew about that, or purchased it already?
I know a lot of people were waiting for it, but grew tired of the constant postponing of it. I think that was a mistake, now nobody noticed it's available.

Obviously most of you have not seen Blade Runner.
I strongly reccamend it, it stars Harrison Ford if that interests you.

Yeah, I and several others listed Blade Runner as one of the top ten. You're right, it truly is a classic.

Hmmm...I can't really think of a particular order but here are 10 sci-fi films in no particular order:
-Blade Runner
-Alien
-Gattaca
-The Terminator
-The Matrix
Damn, I can't think of 5 more. I've never really beena huge sci-fi fan to begin with so that doesn't really help, I suppose. That, and I have a pretty strict definition in mind when thinking of what a sci-fi film is.
