its struck me - and has probably a lot of you - that the Death Star isn't really a safe environment
firstly...the docking bay where the Falcon lands....a massive 30ft square hole in the ground - unguarded and unfenced....i know its a lift platform but when its not at the top - their is a great big chasm waiting for an accident to happen
not an ideal location, especially on a landing platform - its lucky that the falcon landed back a few feet otherwise the landing ramp would have dropped right on top of it....
secondly - the super laser - now this laser is powerful enough to blow up an entire planet, but the Gunner operators sit / stand just a few metres away from the firing mechanism...and when it fires they shield their eyes...i have a feeling that they might have been a little hotter than that...
thirdly - chasms - everywhere....the tractor beam control, no rails; when Luke & Leia are escaping the Stormies - a door opens onto a chasm, that you have to operate a bridge for - why?> why have a retractable bridge on an impenatrable battle station?...it makes no sense
fourthly, doors that close at breakneck speed or at obscure angles...."open the blast doors, open the blast doors"...doors don't need to open & close that fast
fifthly, door openings that are not tall enough for stormtroopers - "mind your head" - especially as they are all supposed to be clones - and the same height...
sixthly...mouse droids...surely a health hazard - little ground level robots...ever tried wearing a storm trooper helmet and looking at yor feet whilst running....its not easy, without these little critters running around
seventhly - a real health hazard in the trash compactor....how on earth did a dirty great monster get on board the Death Star anyway..rats maybe but a Dianoga - thats just odd
d'you think that the Stormies had health insurance?
any other health issues on our favourite battle station, barring the obvious defensive design faults....???

Good thoughts on the Death Star...but with Vader on board there is always rrom to move up the corporate ladder. Just once you get high enough...dont get choked.

The Empire must have "influenced" the building inspectors.

The Death Star was designed by the Geonosians...they all could fly. They also like pointless retractable bridges...see the Droid Factory entrance in AOTC.

^Good point.
This thread got me thinking that if the Emperor was truly wise, his direction to the architects would have been:
"Before I give my final approval, remove all the shafts from the second one."
Anyone read "A Death Star is Born" in one of the SW Tales issues? Basically takes the piss out of everything you guys are. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/happy.gif It's Amazing.

indeed....

I wonder, if the DS shot at a star, could it take out the system?

now we're getting confusing - are stars not like a million years old and a long way away and by the time you got to them (or fired at one) it would have already have died....???
really it should have been called:
"Floating Ball of Laser Power" or something.....
afterall its not a Star and naming it 'Death' is a bit of a givaway...
it surely must have had another 'prototype' name or something - thats not the name that the people on it would call it is it? (its like something that your enemies would call it)
Okay, if the Death Star shot at a sun, would it take out the entire system? style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/giveup.gif

And 'Death Star' is just a cool name. Just like 'Star Wars.' We're not actually fighting IN A STAR! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue2.gif

Maybe a white dwarf or a neutron star, maybe. Of course I wouldn't want to be around the neutron star. The resulting explosion could cause a nice little black hole to form and then it's bye-bye Death Star.
But a Sun-like star or larger? I think it's safe to say NO WAY!!!!! It would probably take a superlaser 1000 times or so more powerful than the Death Star to destroy a star. Now, the Death Star could probably cause one heck of a solar flare that might destroy a rebel outpost or a planet or so, but then again that's what the superlaser's for so it makes that idea all the more redundant. And even so, if the Empire did have some kind of uber-Death Star that could destroy a star, I doubt they could get that big sucker into hyperspace fast enough before the resulting supernova would destroy it. Simply destroying a star in the manner that we're discussing just isn't feasible in any sort of way, I believe.

If there were any parasitic lawyers in the star wars universe the storm troopers would have all sued the Empire and the death star would have been grounded by health and safety.

even though its not very safe, its a great thing to have in your fleet but two in your fleet would be even better

To evil-incarnate galactic-domineering Sith lords such as the Emperor and Vader, I'm sure Health and Safety regulations weren't on their list of priorities in building the Death Star style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif
And on Matt's point, a Star Destroyer doesn't have the firepower to actually destroy a star either!

I bet health and especially safety issues were on Palpatine's mind as he fell down that shaft! I can just see it now: "Damn me for shooting down those safety walls on Death Star shafts! Dark Side didn't forsee THIS happening did it? NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! Just let me fall from here to the power core!!!! Oh no, here it comes!!! OW!!!!! That frickin' hurt!!!!!!"

Thought this one was worthy of a bump.
thirdly - chasms - everywhere....the tractor beam control, no rails; when Luke & Leia are escaping the Stormies - a door opens onto a chasm, that you have to operate a bridge for - why?> why have a retractable bridge on an impenatrable battle station?...it makes no sense
Well, someone already mentioned that Geonosians designed it, but I would think they would've been more considerate of those without the ability to fly when they did so. Maybe they implemented features that would be best suited for or operated by a Geonosian so that the Empire would actually have use for them after their contribution.
Concerning the bridge, maybe we saw the exact reason in the movie why the made it retractable. So they could section off areas in case of emergency, like the attempted escape of prisoners.
Concerning the tractor beam controls, there could have very well been a robot assigned to reach them. Just a thought.
sixthly...mouse droids...surely a health hazard - little ground level robots...ever tried wearing a storm trooper helmet and looking at yor feet whilst running....its not easy, without these little critters running aroundAgreed, but you still gotta love those guys. Probably because everyone loves RC cars. But yeah, something like hover droids that operated just above head level would've been more suitable, says I.
seventhly - a real health hazard in the trash compactor....how on earth did a dirty great monster get on board the Death Star anyway..rats maybe but a Dianoga - thats just oddYou'd think the DS would've had a more efficient and ... modern waste disposal setup. And perhaps the dianoga was thrown in their only recently. Maybe it was part of some confiscated cargo. Or maybe it was originally mistakenly dropped in their as a baby and had survived for who knows how long afterward.

nope thats what the sun crusher is for. The death star was a terror weapon. ITs why the senate get abolished, who in thier right mind would openly defy the empoer when he can turn round and go
"ok youve annoyed me, im gonna blow up your enitre planet"
