Why did Obi- Wan sacrifice himself.

As Obi-Wan said to Darth Vader
"If you strike me down I will become more powerful than you can possibly imagine"
And he did. He was able to be with Luke when he needed him the most in his spiritual form. He helped him destroy the first Death Star by having him trust in the force. He helped him in Hoth by telling him to go to Dagobah.
So in total, he let himself be destroyed so that he could be the most use.

I agree with Alan. He helped Luke along the way. He could help him easier that way and it would be harder for Vader to provent it.

Yeah Alan is right. And he needed to sacrifice himself to save Luke, Han, Leia from Vader. And Aurra your correct it was much easier to teach Luke.

All the jedi that have disapeared when they died knew that their death was coming. Then they became one with the force. So I guess Obi-Wan let himself die so he could be one with the force, and appear to Luke when the need arose.

That was my thought about it exactly. Obi-wan knew he couldn't get out of there alive. He sacrificed himself so Luke could escape alive. Plus, then he could be there in spirit form for Luke when it was needed.

I think it's also interesting that Obi1 seems to beckon the stormtroopers over to watch him and Darth fight with a little nod of his head, giving our heroes a clear path to the Falcon.
He does it twice, but I think it's just the same shot used twice.

I think he was nodding at Luke to get him to leave

Obi-Wan dies halfway through 'Star Wars' because George Lucas couldn't think of anything for him to do in the second half of the movie. True story.

Be that as it may. Old Ben still came back for the last two ,with wise words for young Skywalker. GL did find something for him to do!

Where'd you here that Justin? Considering he was one of the only two known stars in the flick I doubt that.

he got the attention of the storm troupers so that the falcon could escape easily. also before that he knew what he had to do because he said to luke "remember luke the force will be always he also did it because he knew luke would listen more if his `master` used the force to communicate with luke, the midichloreans also helped obi teach luke, and as obi wan said "if you strike me down i will only become more powerful" and he was right he found and tought luke, and he had the power to defeat the empire, emperor and vader and help the `jedi return!`

Ben could've seen that Luke would destroy the DS and that Vader and Palpy would figure out who it was. By dying they would think that Luke couldn't be that much of a threat and would be easily turned because there was no one else to train him. All the while Ben knew Luke would be trained by Yoda, with nobody the wiser.

mmm
Ben has always known that Yoda would train Luke, why else would he be on Tatooine.
I don't think Vader knew that Luke was on the DS when he killed Obi. Only after he started using the Force in the death star trench did he feel the Force in him.
By the time of ESB he's found out who he is and is searching for him.
Obi's sacrifice did allow the Falcon to get away sure, but they were already letting them go - 'Are you sure the homing becon is secure on their ship, I'm taking an awful risk Vader'
Considering family death seems to be a recurring theme with Jedi, Obi knew that watching him sacrifice himself against his former pupil would cement Luke on the Light side, as much as Shmi's death cemented Anakin on the Dark.

mixing up the flicks style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif
In SW, Grand Moff Tarkin says 'I'm taking an awful risk Vader, this had better work'
In ESB, the Emperor is talking to Vader over holonet 'The son of skywalker mustn't become a Jedi'; Vader - 'He is just a boy. Obi-Wan can no longer help him'
