West Wing proved he could act and he certainly looks the part. I think he could be great.

Yeah, I don't think Lowe is right for it. YOu can get away with casting unknowns in these types of roles and major stars, but a has been movie actor? I dunno.

I like Rob Lowe as much as the next guy, he was fun in West Wing and did a really good job in Salem's Lot, but as an Iron Man fan I just don't think he would fit. I've always seen Tony Stark as guy who uses his jet-setting multi-millionaire lifestyle as a facade (ala Bruce Wayne without the angst) but really is out to save the world first. Besides, in Iron Man mythos, he invented the suit because he got wounded in Vietnam, and Rob Lowe is just seems to me to be too much of a pretty boy to have fought in Vietnam. I'm really trying to figure out who would make a good Tony Stark, but I'm so out of it when it comes to modern actors anymore that I really have no idea...

Rob Lowe? No. I can't get past him playing young Number 2 in Austin Powers. I have the feeling that if they cast him then Marvel pictures is gonna have another Incredible Hulk, where the CGI makes the movie.
Tom Cruise is a better choice, but still not great.
Hell I could see George Clooney in the role, but after Batman and Robin, I say put him back in a doctor outfit.
How about Matt Damon?
Jedi_of_the_North
11-02-2004, 12:51 AM
Still too much of a pretty boy for me. All I can see him as is Will Hunting and that's just not Tony Stark. He fought in Vietnam for crying outloud, we need someone kind of cool and almost gritty underneath a facade of a global jet-setter, and like I said, I don't know who would make good, but Tom Cruise and Matt Damon just wouldn't work for me as a Tony Stark

Disgusting. I rather barf than have him play Tony. When it comes to casting, I believe it was already established that
[attachmentid=17049] = [attachmentid=17050].
(reads the movie list) I'll go ahead and say it, even though it will probably never happen. I want an Avengers movie a lot more than the solo adventures of them.

Well, if Nick Fury of The Ultimates had his way, it would be Depp. :)
As for who I'd see as Iron Man... if he hadn't been in The Hulk, I think Eric Bana would've been a decent Tony Stark. A little too "smoldering" in his previous roles, but it would be interesting to see him step out of his comfort zone into the part of an alcoholic, jet-setting billionaire who flies around in a suit of armor.
Another idea: Colin Farrell. Doesn't quite have the 'glint-in-the-eye' quality of Tony, but he's got the range and ability to play the part.

You know to be honest, Tom Cruise actually wasn't that bad of a choice to play Tony Stark, but I think the film itself will be better off without him for a number of reasons.

IRON MAN MOVIE DATE
Paramount Pictures and Marvel Entertainment on Friday announced that the Iron Man movie, to be directed by Jon Favreau, will reach theaters on May 2, 2008.
Iron Man is the first feature film to be produced independently by Marvel Entertainment, expected to be financed through Marvel's $525 million revolving film financing facility and distributed under Marvel's overall distribution arrangement with Paramount.
Iron Man will be produced by Avi Arad, creative advisor to Marvel Studios, and Kevin Feige, Marvel's president of production. Executive producers are Favreau, Ari Arad, Favreau and Louis D'Esposito. It will also be the first project for the newly launched Avi Arad Productions.
"We're thrilled to be launching the summer 2008 movie season with Iron Man," Feige said. "Marvel has had great success with the first Friday in May -- Spider-Man broke records on that first Friday and X2 debuted at the top of the box office charts as well. We're looking forward to extending that track record with Iron Man and are extremely pleased with the progress of the script, the production team we are forming and the initial production designs."
Here's how the film is described:
"Based upon Marvel's iconic Super Hero, the film will follow billionaire weapons-manufacturer, Tony Stark, who confronts the sins of his past after he is injured by one of his own weapons. Equipped with a high-tech suit of armor, he becomes Iron Man to combat evil on a global scale."

Downey Jr. is perfect. He's been through all the drug troubles and everything, which brings a steaming hot bag of realism to the role. Everyone knows of his drug and alcohol problems, and those that know Iron Man know that Tony Stark has problems like that as well. Besides, Downey Jr. actually looks quite a bit like Tony Stark.

Well, he basically is Nick Fury based on the look and way he acts. John Carpenter just beat them to the punch.
But the reaosn Jackson gets the part is because they have already used him as a model for Nick Fury in comics before.

Well, he basically is Nick Fury based on the look and way he acts. John Carpenter just beat them to the punch.
But the reaosn Jackson gets the part is because they have already used him as a model for Nick Fury in comics before.
And he has publicly stated that he wanted to play Nick Fury, probably after seeing his likeness used as the template for the Ultimate version of the character.
It's going to be weird seeing him on the big screen. I can't wait.

In the ULTIMATEverse Nick Fury is black and bald.
I don't know why it isn't David Hasselhoff... he owns that role... :P <--- universal sarcasm indicator (anyone see that flick though?)

Have you seen that movie with the Hoff as Fury? Nick Fury: Agent of SHEILD? Truly a MST3K movie waiting to happen... too funny.
There's actually a new Nick Fury movie in development... supposedly Fred Ward is in talks to play the caucasian version of the Shield head... but depending on how well received Iron Man is with the Sam Jackson Fury, I'd bet that film changes to the ULTIMATE version as well.

And btw, is this thread only for the movie or also Tony Stark/Iron Man comic stuff?
Have they said anything on how many versions of the Iron Man armor Stark is going to use in this movie?
I'm thinking that we'll only see one, given the fact that Favreau has stated that this is an origin movie, and that descriptions of the plot put Stark building the suit to escape captivity.
Who knows, it does look dang nifty though.

Nick Fury will always and forever be Kurt Russell in my mind.
Kurt Russel = Cable
And about the suits that one on the left looks like the one Tony Built with that other guy in Vietnam, It probably will be in the story because the story of why the suit was built is really Tony's only story...
Is anyone else a little wary about this movie?
also I was going to say that they should play Black Sabbath's "Iron Man" In this movie...
Much like they should have played "Mr. Sandman" in Spiderman three.

Yeah, it was a joke.
I was trying to explain how Spiderman 3's cred was shot so the only thing they had to do was lay that song.

Tony Stark might be in his 70s or 80s by now, lol ;) What we know is that it was NOT Stan Lee or Jack Kirby's inspiration for the name... but later writers have linked it as Tony Stark's inspiration for the name.

That said, I had never heard of the term 'retcon' until I read this page, and I gotta say, it sucks. Yeah, ok, so now the song is a part of Iron Man history, but c'mon, it really isn't. "Retcon"? Gimme a break. Are they gonna suddenly change Spider-Man's origin and 'retcon' Flint Marko as Uncle Ben's killer because it happened in the latest movie? Ugh.
Morridini
09-14-2007, 01:04 PM
Retcons is one of the most frequent things in comic books, some are good, some are bad. No use whining about it.
This one is an ok one, as they had to change his age, or else Stark would be waaay too old nowdays.
Also they don't retcon things without reason (mostly, silly Superboy Prime), so the Spidey example would never happen.
RollaFett
09-14-2007, 02:12 PM
Age isn't a factor in comics, though, because by that rational, most comic book characters would be entirely too old, or dead, by now. A 'retcon' isn't necessary for readers to know that Iron Man isn't in his 70's, or that Superman is in his 90's, etc.
The Spidey example was just that, an example. I wouldn't expect them to actually do that, as it was horrible enough to see on screen.
And as far as silly retcons go, changing Iron Man's origin so it jives with the Black Sabbath song isn't silly?
Morridini
09-14-2007, 04:05 PM
Don't really see why it would be silly. Things like that is often left unexplained so that they can one day add it to the Origin, happens all the time.
And they did retcon the entire Marvel universe so that the Fantastic Four was formed sometime in in the 1990s instead of 1966 not so long ago, they adventures have still happened, but only over 14 years (or so) and not over 41 years.
RollaFett
09-14-2007, 05:00 PM
Hell, I don't even read comics anymore, so i don't know why this 'retcon' crap bugs me, but it does. It just seems so unnecessary.
Morridini
09-14-2007, 05:10 PM
Well, some may be annoying, but this one I see nothing wrong with.
One of the worst retcons in my opinion is in the DC universe. Superboy from Earth Prime, got way too powerful. And what did he do? He punched, yes punched, reality (yup) so that stuff in the timeline changed. Resulting in the fact that Jason Todd, aka Robin, never died and he suddenly showed up alive...
One of the most important deaths in Comics got retconned because Superboy Prime punched reality.
Kapit

I agree with Rolla. Adding the song into the mythology because they have the same name seems quite silly to me.

They didn't need to make the song the origin of his name. It seemed pretty obvious in the early days that he chose "Iron Man" because... well... he's a man... and his suit is iron... :P

Raganork8
09-15-2007, 09:32 AM
I know that too; but, being a former drummer in a band I get kinda touchy about that...lol.
I know it's essentially the same trailer; but, maybe it was the editing on this one that seemed less dramatic. The movie still looks good; but, the comic con trailer to me kinda made Iron Man in a Batman Begins kinda way, this trailer has reminded me that Marvel is doing it.
I just have a lot of issues with Marvel right now and the calibur of charcters that have and the difference in the Calibur of movies they're making. I'm just unable to give them the benefit of the doubt anymore and I want this movie to be good.
But without a clear villian and some serious rethinking on how Marvel creates it's movies I feel this movie might be nothing better than a good explanation of the original Iron Man suit.
That scene looks great; but, I'm just not sure about the rest of the movie. either way it's too late to tell and I'm just hoping it's good; but, if I had to take marvel's previous performances I would be wary about how excited about this movie I get.
Though Robert Downy actually might be Iron Man...

there's a clear villain: Jeff Bridges. There's a scene in the trailer with him in some giant mechanical suit (looking like the Mark I Iron Man suit, but without a helmet and huge) firing at Iron Man with a missle or something.

I don't know too much about Iron Man, only really that he has a suit that enables him to be superhard, fly, etc.
In the pics for the film it seems that he has an early suit that is pretty damn big rather than a close fitting suit that makes him more maneuverable.
Does anyone have a website I could check out to get a bit of history about the character as I really like the look of the movie and the idea behind it?

Well I can sum his life pretty quickly up for you.
He is a genius, a true mastermind and the best inventor on Earth. He has earned billions on arms manufacturing and doesn't exactly have a high morale. One day in Afghanistan he gets to see what damage his weapons are causing directly, he himself is caught in an explosion and gets a shrapnel stuck in his chest and it's moving ever closer to his heart. An electro magnetic engine thingy is operated into his chest to draw at the shrapnel, making sure it never slips into his heart. And this is what puts him down the road to make the Iron Man suit, he want to start using his technology to better the world/do amends for all the destruction his weapons have caused. The first and bulky Armor you see in the trailer was one he made with whatever he could get hold of when he was hiding for terrorists in Afghanistan, the red and yellow one is one he makes when he is back in the US and have got state of the arts equipment.
EDIT: For more in depth, take a look at:

Cool, nice one Morridini, much appreciated!
With the engine in his chest - could they not manage to remove the shrapnel instead?
Morridini

No it was lodged waay too close to his heart, it's like micrometers or something away from being deadly.
However....one day he finally did get it out, because Earth technology evolved to the point where it could be removed. So if you pick up an IM comic today he won't have the shrapnel anymore.
EDIT: ok just got a bit unsure when thinking about it, I am unaware of how long he has the shrapnel, it might have been removed as soon as he got back to the US, or many years later, I simply don't remember atm.
EDIT 2: Ok just checked it up, he had the shrapnel as mentioned, after a while he got a whole heart transplant with an artificial heart, however some years later he got another heart attack, and he now got a "robot heart" instead.

That's okay - it was just good to know. :)
The movie sounds better to me now than it did before - a nice morality tale as well as the possibility for loads of special effects and explosions!

minor possible spoiler below!
Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk (http://movies.go.com/moviesproxy/buzzbin?columnid=929509&CMP=ILC-Flash1#)
Double Trouble The two superheroes may cross over into each other's movies next year, in secretly filmed scenes. That'd be cool. It'd be like watching the Jolly Green Giant opening a can of peas.

About bloody time if you ask me, they should have done it with X-Men/Spider-man ages ago. Not much is needed though, simply a newspaper in the background in X-Men talking about Spidey for instance would be enough.

Well, I would think we could see it more often now that Marvel has it's own movie studio and is directly involved in the making of the newer franchises.

I"m kind of disapointed they don't have the mandarin as the vilain but I like Iron monger so I gues it isn't all bad. Mabie if they make a second one they could use Thanos or Ultron. i mean Thanos was first introduced in Ironman and Ultron is just cool. These Ideas probly won't happen though.

Iron Man (http://movies.go.com/iron-man/d853933/action)
Electric or Hand-Crank? This third-tier superhero may turn out to be the biggest hit of next year. While I still say he looks like a guy who can be defeated with a can opener, the Ozzy Osbourne-fueled trailer (http://movies.go.com/trailer?cid=915855&vid=915856) gets me pumped.

Iron Man (http://movies.go.com/iron-man/d853933/action)
With Robert Downey Jr. as the titular billionaire industrialist turned supersuit-wearing hero, Iron Man has the potential to be a superhero flick on the level of Christian Bale's Batman. Director Jon Favreau's attention to the look, especially the Iron Man suit, and his frequently updated production blog won fans over early on, and casting additions like Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, a cameo by Hilary S**** and Jeff Bridges as Tony Stark/Iron Man mentor turned rival Obadiah Stane/Iron Monger are icing on the cake. (May 2)

Iron Man Super Bowl Spot to be Everywhere
Source: Advanced Dark
January 29, 2008
Looks like you won't have trouble finding the Iron Man Super Bowl TV spot online after it airs during the big game. Check out this bit from the Wall Street Journal (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB120148348745821125.html?mod=rss_media_and_market ing):
Paramount Pictures is using its ad spending to promote the May release of superhero film "Iron Man." People who watch the game on TV will see a commercial for the movie. People who visit any of the major online Super Bowl ad polls will also see the spot. Visitors to MySpace can see an Iron Man profile on the site. And if people search for terms related to Iron Man on Google, it will turn up there as well. On ESPN.com, ads will show the TV spot and prompt visitors to go to the "Iron Man" Web site to register for downloads and giveaways.

Hmm. I think it looked fine. That was my favorite part of the tv spot. And CGI-ish or not, the costume (even in motion) looks several hundred times better than either the BB or TDK suits.

That scene looked like it would be better suited for the video game, rather than the movie.
I mean, judging by the earlier scene with the jets, they can obviously make it look very realistic, so here's to hoping that the tank sequence isn't completely finished.
