I locked my journal because I have some personal stuff that I don't want the public to read. A friend of mine revealed some stuff in her personal journal and started to get these freaks commenting. So for me locking my journal to friends only, it's my way of knowing who is going to read it.

I only lock some things, well, most things lately. I have tons of friends on my list whom I love who can read my friends only posts so I am not alone.

I don't think GB should hold back in writing his feelings because he is afraid of what people will think, so sometimes friends only is good.

As someone who's had a blog (http://undermine.net/tracy/) since 2001, I feel that Livejournal is really the best place for your more fannish types, and those who aren't quite web-savvy. I had a blog for years but I never had much luck finding other geeky types, let alone getting my friends to start one, until I got on Livejournal (http://www.livejournal.com/users/snarkel/) and dragged about a dozen people on within my first month. It's like a cult, really. I even started abandoning my real blog because I got so much more comments and attention on LJ.

It really depends what kind of image you're trying to project. If you just want to write about your life and random stuff, go with Livejournal. If you want to be seen as slightly more professional and/or stick to a a certain set of subjects, go with a blog. Blogger/Blogspot is good for starting out, but clients like Movable Type, Wordpress, and Textpattern, all of which you install on your own webspace, are more flexible and customizable.

That said, I'm the admin of starwars_eu (http://www.livejournal.com/community/starwars_eu/) on LJ, and I'd love to see more people. I'm afraid I'm drawing a blank on conversation topics at the moment!
