Pick your favorite feature-length Disney movie made from the 70's to the present, and tell us why.

Brian

The Lion King! A close second is The Little Mermaid.

The Lion King is my all-time favorite cartoon movie.

I hate The Lion King. I seem to remember kind of liking it the first time I saw it, but then it got so over-exposed, and it's just so sappy. Everytime I hear that stupid "Hakuna Matata" song, I want to kill someone violently. Blah. But hey, everyone has their own opinion.

Everywhere we go
People wanna know
Who we are
so we tell them
We are The Titans
Mighty mighty Titans
Remember the Titans. It's my favorite movie all time except for Star Wars

I picked Alladdin, cause it made me laugh alot and it had a good story, but Robin Williams as the Genie was cool.

Gilbert Godfrey was hilarious and annoying at the same time lol

Of course, I disagree. Lion King had THE BEST music in a modern-day Disney animated feature ever. Sure, there were many great songs from other Disney movies including "A Whole New World", "Under The Sea", and "Colors of the Wind", but the songs from Lion King were the best, IMO. The story was moving, the animation was fantastic, the voice overs were terrific, and it's probably the most popular modern-day Disney movie of all time.

What bubbly Disney song doesn't get annoying after a while? "Hakuna Matata" is no exception. Even still, I love that song.

Justin

I think the music in Tarzan was better, honestly. I hate Elton John. I think the music in Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast is the best.

I picked Beauty and the Beast because it has a really good story and good characters. Little Mermaid is a close second for the same reasons.

This is for you Justin

Hakuna Matata!
What a wonderful phrase
Hakuna Matata!
Ain't no passing craze

It means no worries
For the rest of your days
It's our problem-free philosophy
Hakuna Matata!

Why, when he was a young warthog...
When I was a young wart hoooog!
Very nice.
Thanks!
He found his aroma lacked a certain appeal
He could clear the savannah after every meal
I'm a sensitive soul, though I seem thick-skinned
And it hurt that my friends never stood downwind
And oh, the shame
(He was ashamed!)
Thoughta changin' my name
(Oh, what's in a name?)
And I got downhearted
(How did you feel?)
Ev'rytime that I...
Pumbaa! Not in front of the kids!
Oh... sorry.

Hakuna Matata!
What a wonderful phrase
Hakuna Matata!
Ain't no passing craze
It means no worries
For the rest of your days
Yeah, sing it, kid!
It's our problem-free
philosophy...
Hakuna Matata!

Hakuna matata
[Repeats]

It means no worries
For the rest of your days.
It's our problem-free philosophy
Hakuna Matata

I have to go with Beauty and the Beast, for a lot of the same reasons as Justin. It's just a great story.

If you like Disney's version, you should pick up Robin McKinley's book Beauty: A Retelling of the Story of Beauty and the Beast. It's really good, and for all I know, it's where Disney got the idea for a lot of the stuff in their movie.

Speaking of Hakuna Matata, has anyone heard Mannheim Steamroller's version? It's hardly recognizable as that song, other than the fact that they say "Hakuna Matata" in it. But it's really funny to listen to.

I have to voice some resent to "The Rescuers" being put in the "Other" category. LOVE that film.

Lion King's a close second. Might never have seen it had my friend not had kids. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

Sorry Seanakin, I actually had "The Rescuers" at the top of the list when I started it.

I also had "The Great Mouse Detective," "Oliver & Company," and "The Rescuers Down Under."

But there's only so much room...

I agree Justin ... I'm not too fond of "Hakuna Matata" myself. But Luvinna's right ... the Mannheim Steamroller version is pretty cool.

Mulan is my favorite. The music was so well done.

Guess my bias is based on the fact it mostly takes place on my birthday. Or just because I loved it THAT much as a kid.

Toy Story is pretty cool.

Justin

Yeah, but Toy Story and the other Pixar movies aren't really in the same vein as the other animated films. I could go make a best CGI movie poll, lol.

I'm against Disney because they wouldn't let Ray Lewis do the commercial when he was MVP of the superbowl. I'm also against Wheaties. and any place that sells shirts with the confederate flag on it. U lost get over it.

Good point. I hadn't thought of that.

Well, I'm not so sure that having Lewis do that commercial would've been a wise move at the time. Sure, now he's a meida darling, but let's not forget about his checkered past, ok? Technically, was it right to bypass him? No. But I can understand the decision that they came to. As far as the confederate flag thing goes, well, I never knew that. Good point, there.

All of that said, I picked "The Fox and the Hound". I remember seeing as a kid, and having a picture book and everything. So, I'll go with that, nice flick.

I have to say that I hate most disney's movies.
Walt disney was a talented artist I don't argue with that, but since he died, his company has kept going from bad to worse.
And I am quite happy to see this company in such trouble: they deserved it!

I wonder what the disney company has done in the last 40 years for the animated genre.
Simple: they did nothing.
They stole every existing tale to make movie scripts, they recycled even japanese and chinese tales!! And let's not talk about that criminal adaptation of the hunchback of notre dame, victor hugo must be having nightmares about it in his graveyard.
When disney made the lion king, it was an uncredited rip-off of an early 60's japanese anime created by ozamu tezuka (Tezuka is in many regards the father of modern manga). Tezuka's heir went in tribunal, it took a while but they won against the big Disney Company and his armada of lawyers.

Some people think that cgi has killed disney, it isn't true: Disney killed itself from it's lack of creativity.
Pixar movies could have been done in regular celluloid and it would still be awesome movies, simply because the scripts are great and innovative. Pixar and others are willing to take risks to make something new which is precisely what Disney never did in the last 40 years. It's way more easy to make an adaptation from children's tale than to come up with a totally brand new script and new characters.
The disney formula hasn't changed since Snow white, that's a fact:
Make an adaptation of a popular tale, add some nice songs, and don't forget to put some animals in it.

The only movie where they did take some risks in the last 40 years is the Black Cauldron(1985 I think). Funny thing is that it is the only Disney movie that isn't available on dvd. Do you know why? Well let me tell you: it's because it's a dark movie, and dark isn't in the Disney formula of course. After all, Disney cie did fire a young Tim burton because his work was too dark. And what is even more pathetical is that the Black Cauldron isn't a bad Disney movie, it's not as great as let's say Robin Hood, but really it is not a movie to be ashamed of.

To give you a metaphore, IMO, disney is in a way like microsoft, they had for decades the monopoly of animated movies, and now everything is falling appart, but that's not bad because now audiences around the world will have the opportunitie to see other animated movies, to see other sensibilitys.

I feel sorry for all the talented painters, animators, etc that are now looking for a job after working for disney, but really, they should be blaming Disney's executives.
They are the ones responsible for this failure, not Pixar, not cgi, not manga nor videogames.

I know this is a bit off topic, and I apologize.
I voted other, because I do like the Black Cauldron.

I was really bored last night, and this topic inspired me to find out when most of Disney's animated classics were released. I now bring you the Disney animated chronology as I know it. Please forgive me if I've forgotten any:

BEFORE THE MODERN ERA:

Snow White - 1937
Fantasia - 1940
Cinderella - 1950
Lady And The Tramp - 1955
Sleeping Beauty - 1959
101 Dalmatians - 1961
The Sword In The Stone - 1963
The Jungle Book - 1967

THE MODERN ERA:

The Aristocats - 1970
Robin Hood - 1973
The Rescuers - 1977
The Fox And The Hound - 1981
The Black Cauldron - 1985
Oliver & Company - 1988
The Little Mermaid - 1989
Beauty & The Beast - 1991
Aladdin - 1992
The Lion King - 1994
Pocahontas - 1995
The Hunchback Of Notre Dame - 1996
Hercules - 1997
Mulan - 1998

That's where I stop the list. Anything after that doesn't count in my book, because the animated films they made after that point not only differed greatly from the films on this list, but lacked in quality to these (save for The Emperor's New Groove). I think Mulan was really their last musical/good animated film.

Beauty and the Beast and Snow White were the only "princess movies" I could and probably will ever be able to stand. I like Robin Hood so much probably because of Roger Miller... I was raised on classic country music. Tarzan is by-far the best modern-era for music and animation. Aladdin's music is cool too, has an almost theatrical sound. Disney's version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame is probably one of my favorites, too, and extremely underrated.

Did Disney like stop making musicals lately? style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huh.gif
