View Full Version : Tov and Badly's Wretched Hive Of Scum & Villiany
Tovor
09-22-2004, 10:18 PM
Everybody knows that "Tov" means "good" in Hebrew, right? Well it does. So the title is akin to Good and Badly's Hive of Scum and Villiany. I thought it sounded witty and ironic. So sue me.
Okay, check this out. In this thread there are no weapons or flaming allowed, so leave all guns, bombs and torches at the door. If you want to drink, role play, and blow each other up over and over, I highly recommend the finest establishment for such amusing antics, Whitesaber and Plo Koon's Pub (http://www.galacticsenate.com/index.php?showtopic=7159). This wretched hive, however, is for the older generation of posters, the golden oldies on the board in their mature 20's, 30's, 40's, and higher, and the old hacks like Badly and I, your hosts. It's a place where me and my chum can talk about the things that we 30-plussers/pushing 40'iers deal with, as well as any and all yada yada yada, and share and be shared by other interested persons of the older generation. Wait, that sure didn't sound right. I did mean sharing as in hearing what others of our persuasion have to say. But you did know that, right? Right. Anyway...
Darth Badly called me the other night from Great Britain. I was astounded that he called me from far away across the pond (he must have a good long distance phone plan), although at first I thought it was either a salesman prepping for a sales pitch, or some person I worked with years ago who I would have to struggle to remember. But it was Badly, calling to see what's up and what's what. He has a cool accent, you know. All them Brits do. I love the way myself and most Americans talk, but the Brits invented the language, and they are still masters of its true form.
Right. So, like I said, here is the place for older gen folks to hang out and talk about things worth talking about. Because anything not worth talking about just isn't worth talking about, right? I don't plan to unleash my fanatically witty behavior in this hive of scum and villiany, I expect to actually be serious here. Seriously. So now we're just waiting for the other host to arrive. He's always late, due to his time being so opposite our time. Anyway.

I am confused. What is this place again? It's about Badly calling people? Kidding...Actually, you said for older gents, but isn't Badly only in early twenties?
Tovor
09-22-2004, 10:39 PM
No, he's older than me. He's either 38 or 39, don't remember exactly. But no, it's not about him calling people. It's just a place where he and I can promote some recurring dialogue and openly invite others of our age range. Though, you are welcome here too. That's why I put in the disclaimer referring to people in their mature 20's.

Really, I thought the only important thing about being in your 30's on a SW message board was that you had to be a big-time loser. Now I know that it .....ahh hell, I 'm still a big time loser, this is just proof that I'm not the only one.

I don't drink alcohol anymore, aside from a rare beer in a blue moon. But I enjoyed rum and cokes. I don't remember what I drank with vodka. Flo might be dissappointed in me that I never really enjoyed vodka. No, I take that back. I drank a lot of vodkas with orange juice back in the day. I had always loved orange juice, I drank it every day and drank it more than I did soda, so it was a great excuse to put the vodka to good use. So there you go.

I'd like to think I fit into that 'mature 20s' category you talked about; but I'd probably just add an 'i' and an 'm' style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif
For me, Brookie, I stick with Orange Juice. The only way to get rid of the sourness of the vodka.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY Golla!!
I did call ya yesterday but your wife said you were out. Well, she kinda hinted you were out, inbetween describing what she was wearing, how long it was taking her to take it off, and then how many bubbles were floating on the bath water.
I'll be calling back real soon.

Hi Brookie style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif
I used to bartend so I typed up a list of some of the classic vodka drinks for you style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/happy.gif
God Mother
(over ice)
2/3 oz vodka
1/3 oz Amareto
(rock glass)
Caesar (my recipe)
Take a lime wedge and rim the glass then dip the glass rim in celery salt
Put your ice in
Then about ¼ tsp of the celery salt
3 shakes of the Worcestershire sauce
couple drops or more (depending how hot you like it) of Tabasco sauce
then 1 oz of vodka
fill the rest of the glass with clamato juice
and then I like the juice of 1 ½ limes squeezed in
Stir it all together so that you don’t suck back a section of pure Tabasco sauce LOL and then drink! You can decorate it with a celery stick or some people use a pickled bean etc.
(double old fashioned glass)
Blue Hawaii
2/3 oz Vodka
1/3 oz Blue Curacao
3 oz pineapple juice
1 oz cream
shaken over ice (pour into a sling glass without the ice)
(decorate with pineapple and cherry)
Bloody Mary
Over ice
1 oz Vodka
top with tomato juice
(double old fashioned glass)
(decorate with lemon and celery stick)
Black Russian
Over ice
2/3 oz Vodka
1/3 oz Kahlua
(rock glass)
Harvey Wallbanger
Over ice
2/3 oz vodka
1/3 oz Galliano
top with orange juice
(hi ball glass)
Killer Kool-Aid
Over ice
2/3 vodka
1/3 melon
top with cranberry juice
(sling glass)
(decorate with cherry)
White Russian
Over ice
2/3 oz vodka
1/3 oz kahlua
top with cream
(rock glass)
Paralyzer
Over ice
2/3 oz vodka or tequila
1/3 oz kahlua
1 oz cream
top with coke
(sling glass) (don’t mix the order in which you put the cream and the coke if you do the cream will curdle)
Salty dog
Salt the rim
Over ice
1 oz vodka
top with grapefruit juice
(hi ball glass)
for a Grey hound it’s the same minus the salted rim
And there is also Chi Chi’s which are also made with vodka but I can never find any coconut syrup to make it at home. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif

ok I have a question for you "older" people who have done the relationship thing...
Does it bother you when you want to engage your partner in a discussion about something that interests you and they shut you down?
For instance tonight I'm watching ER and they showed a car going into the river the occupants were all injured and the vehicle began to sink I spoke up at that moment to my boyfriend who was watching it with me and I said ok either they open the window now before the water covers the window and get out now or they wait for the car to sink and completely cover the doors for the pressure to equalize and then open the door and get out. That kind of moment always gets me fired up I'm always trying to figure it out. Just like when they do the medical analysis or administer the drugs or order labs I'm always pulling out my books and verifying it or trying to anticipate what they should do next. I enjoy the thrill of making my brain work through the problem. In this case I was all excited 'cause I knew I had the right answer and I turned to my boyfriend and looked at him he looked annoyed and said "it's just a TV show I don't want to discuss it, I like to just watch it not think about it."
My adrenalin rush and excitement just kind of fizzled in that moment and I felt a little depressed that I could not share my excitement with him. Do you ever feel that way about not being able to share or connect?
Not sure if this is what you had in mind Tovor ...

i know what you are talking about. i have been with my boyfriend for three years, and am very fortunate to be able to connect with him on various levels, blah , blah, blah. however, if there ever is a moment like you decribed, i do get a little upset, but soon it passes. i find the good outweighs the bad, and i remind myself that if we both liked exactlly the same things for the same reasons, our relationship would get boring real fast!
cj790
09-24-2004, 06:09 AM
I know what you mean, and Brookie's dead right. The good ultimately outweighs the bad. There are times when you really want to discuss things you find exciting and the other doesn't, and I'm sure I shoot the wife down when she's fired up about something too. It's even worse when you find yourself on the opposite ends of a passionate argument. But it takes diffr'nt strokes to rule the world (yes it does) style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif
As long as there are things you can connect with, and you are considerate and respectful in the other occasions, it can't be all bad.
Now I'm off to learn how to be more considerate and respectful...

Yah, I feel ya kiddo. That can be very frustrating and I agree with you on that. I think about things like that too and it would annoy me if my other or even just friends knocked my intellect down like that. But then, maybe that is why we've had such long chats, and why we all know on the board you came from that you're not happy and should pack your bags. A good partner is one who appreciates your thoughts and feelings and will listen to them even if they don't agree with the topic. I think.

Hey Darth style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif Everybody makes drinks a little differently so it's sometimes tough to know exactly what the recipe is. There is supposed to be a standard but sometimes or I should say many times bartenders substitute especially when we run out and 99 % of the time the customer doesn't notice. For instance the ingredients for a chichi are milk, coconut syrup and pineapple juice but I've substituted the pineapple juice for orange juice and people have loved it! LOL
But the classic recipe for a Bermuda High ball is
over ice (high ball glass)
1 oz gin
1 oz brandy
1/2 oz dry martini (vermouth or bianco)
top with ginger ale
the flavour can often be improved my using higher quality alcohol at home (most bars use the cheapest brands)
hope that helps style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

I'll be 29 soon and I think I'm finally starting to feel my age. Usually I have a good relationship with teenagers especially teenage boys (don't say it Tovor!) because I'm a geek and talk shop y'know?
But now I find myself getting irritated by teenagers when they get loud and obnoxious. I've even caught myself saying "goddamn teenagers!" and "where the hell are their parents?" It sounds like what people used to say about my friends and I...oy.
I've even had thoughts about how practical buying a tea cozy would be to keep the tea in my teapot hot. argh!

Yeah, I understand that. I am in contact with teenagers often from either employees that I've had, or customers who I've gotten to talking to at my counter, and sometimes I've nearly forgotten that I'm at the age that I'm at because I enjoy chatting with teens and guys and gals in their early 20's at times. But then there are other times, times more often, when I look at them and can't believe how young they look to me, and how young they act too. Which is not necessarily a slight toward them because it is at times a youthful naivety that most including me miss and envy. But I suppose I get irritated at times too when they come up in a group and they're giggling and almost oblivious to people around them and proper etiquette (sp?) and procedure as far as how they react to a person behind a counter. But then, there are adults who are the same way, oblivous and lost in their own little world. But I do get what you're saying there. See? No jokes. Not what you expected, huh? style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/happy.gif

i am only 23, which is pretty young, and teenagers really annoy me, girls more so then boys, i actually get a long with the boys, because they tend to like comics, and sci fi, more so then the girls. all the girls do is say "like" and "totally" way too much. They also seems to approach me more so then people my own age, , (because i look like i could be 18)which really pisses me off! my sister who just turned 18 looks older than me!

And they shuffle around with the bottoms of their pants longer than the bottoms of their shoes. It's amazing they don't trip and fall on their faces. Now, I have a few pairs of pants that I've not had time to get them tailored and they are much too long. When I wear them I have to fold the bottom edges inward so they don't drag on the floor. But I can't fathom it being easy to walk pretty much on the edges of their pants.

Scramble was big when I was 13-14 years old, 1980, 81. You pilot a starship bomber horizontally across a landscape of enemy landing fields, structures, defensive batteries, and radar screens and the like. You fire forward and speed up and slow down and go up and down to avoid enemy fire, enemy ships lifitng off, and to hit targets. It has phases that you reach and each is different. One of the coolest ones that I remember was a cave that you fly through. It was fun, but it was sort of slow compared to later games. Have you ever played or seen Defender, or Defender: Stargate? Those games were fast and action packed, but the manuevering at high speed while shooting at enemy landers and saving falling humans without shooting them while fighting landers was something I had trouble mastering. I remember the baiters and swarmers. Those were the most fun to do battle against.

Yes, I see that on their pants. On the long pants that I mentioned, when they start to unfold they drag and the edges fray, and I think it looks scraggy and in poor taste. But the kids seem to like that look.

I don't know about "too British", since half of the Hive is owned by your countryman Badly. But no, we don't have any board games here. Though yes, we do have a table for holgraphic chess.

Mmmmm chess. I never win though! Which makes me mad because I am quite competitive.
Do you play? If so, defensivly or attacking?
Tovor
09-25-2004, 11:15 AM
I love chess with an intense passion. I have a beautiful ceramic chess set that sadly I never get to use, since none of my friends or family like to play. I was strategic in my play and always attacking. I always planned out several moves, and postitioned my pieces to attack from different places, so that when my opponent blocked one attack, I had another lined up after his king or queen. I usually set up my attack with my queen, my bishops, and my rooks, from at least three different directions. One piece would take out whatever was blocking his king, and when that piece was "killed" by his queen or anything else, I'd have another piece waiting to move into the opening and strike.
mazzy
09-25-2004, 11:24 AM
I am a defensive player. I tend to guard my queen and not use her to the best of her abilities. I also seem to get all my pieces bunched up on my side of the board and it gets hard to find a place to move to. I play against someone who is a lot better than me though so I never win.
My favorite piece would be a knight. I think they have the element of surprise because they can take a piece when they may look innocent.
Tovor
09-25-2004, 11:40 AM
I so agree! I love the knight. He can come from around the corner and strike when least expected.
Tovor
09-25-2004, 11:42 AM
You should really avoid bunching your pieces together. The first thing I usually do is move my far left and right pawns forward to open a path for my rook to move up and left, or right, then I open a path for my bishops and mu knights, and like I said, prepare them across my side of the board to be ready to strike from different angles.
mazzy
09-25-2004, 11:48 AM
Yes! That is what I never do!! My rooks always get stuck and then taken by my opponents rooks or queen. I'll try and remember that next time.

Yes Mazzy, to Tovoron you listen!
Here is a cool story for you:
10 years ago I was sent to Tennessee to manage an operation there. The president of the company (it was a very small company, a dozen people at that point), my former manager who I became close to, went up there with me the first month to help me set up. We had to share a hotel room and spent a lot of time chatting and hanging out, that kind of thing. We went to a nearby pawn shop and I saw the ceramic chess set and fell in love with it, but I didn't have the $50 it cost. Then Tony saw it and went and bought it, and I was so pissed off because I wanted it. Well, every night we played, and he realized very soon that I was deadly. We played 27 games the first week. We had 3 stalemates, he won 2 times, and I whooped his queen and/or king the rest of the time. I was indeed stealthy, strategic, and quite deadly on the board. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif Well, as you can imagine, at the end before he went home, he game me the set, as the spoils of my victory.
mazzy
09-25-2004, 12:08 PM
Cool story, glad I don't play you - I couldn't suffer the humiliation.

Board games - Mazzy we have 'em.
The Hive has:
Chess
Dominos
Sorry (Great game!)
Monopoly (SW version - oh yes, massa)
Cluedo
Snakes & Ladders
Chinese Chequers
Solitarire
Ludo
Four-in-a-row
Steeplechase
And others too that I'll remember in a bit no doubt. Let me know what ya need.

PS We also have Top Trumps (the new generation) Buffy, Angel, and LOTR. Why isn't there a SW Top Trumps yet? Bet there will be this time next year.

Peeps, the Hive is safe and secure, but I might lose power at any time. The winds are picking up and the hurricane is expected to hit just north of me at around midnight. If I don't post for a few days, or several, don't worry about me. When hurricane Frances came by here we lost power a half day before it arrived, and went without it for days. So I might lose power again but without real damage to my building and area. But on the other hand, the cane has increased from a level 2 in strength to a 3, and might even, according to forecasters, increase to a 4 by the time it reaches the coast. And that is not good, that is really bad. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/giveup.gif

Ditto, dude. I had the same problem when flying at top speed and firing at landers, going up and down, and shot the poor victims. You know, you had to hate when your planet blew up and you were in space surrounded by ships, but in a way I loved it because I went wild with the fire button and didn't have to worry about hitting people. And when the baiters came after me, I loved trying to outmanuever them. I loved playing with them and reversing my direction back and forth and making them do the same to try to keep up with me.

You have place for "mature 20's" here, so could I get a visitor's pass as a "immature 30" (which may or may not be my true age)? style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/y.gif

Badly, hold the walls up for me, would ya, and keep the Hive alive. I won't be around for a few days I imagine. Things aren't going well for this Hive co-owner. Read the Crap thread, I don't want to bring it into this thread.
Be well, eat drink and be merry. But if you can't be merry, be Pippin. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/happy.gif

Have you got the illustrated transcripts of his speeches? Eddie Campbell artwork, very nice indeed. I have Birth Caul and Snakes and Ladders - might have to read Snakes and Ladders alongside the cd style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

No worries.
I have the comic versions of those two (is that what you mean?).
I also have the CD of The Birth Caul if you want that. But we should probably take this discussion over to the Comic's Shack.

DEAR ALL:
Let's be gentle with The Hive on a Saturday night. I'm off to see Super Size Me.
More importantly lets all keep our pal Mr T in our thoughts. (For details of why see the Crap2 thread.)

I'm taking it back here after all, my chum, since it is our personal thread.
I prayed to God on Friday to let her live. He answered my prayers. He said no. Her body is shutting down, her kidneys are failing, and when I returned to the hospital I got the doctor's grim speech this afternoon. They can't do anything. Every dialysis treatment is making the kidneys worse, they can't do anything, and he wanted me to consent to stopping the dialysis because it will only prolongue her suffering. I'm going to lose her in 2 to 3 days, when she goes into renal coma and passes from renal failure. But I'm losing her, she's losing her battle. Nobody wanted to tell her, they wanted to let her pass peacefully in her eventual coma sleep. I felt she had to know, she has to make peace, I'd want to know, I'd want to prepare if it were me. But she already knew, nobody told her but she knows from everyones reactions, and she has known all along from the steadily declining health. How everyone is spending so much more time in her room, at least one person at a time staying with her when she sleeps so she won't wake alone. Then she wanted to talk to me alone, and I was on my way in, but she said to the family several times that she had to speak with me alone. I hugged her and told her that I'd never wanted to see her like that, and she told me she'll be watching over me and told me "promise" as in promise you'll find some happiness in life. I was destroyed, I cried with my arms wrapped around her like I've never cried in 2 decades. She knows its the end, I can't believe it. And everyone finally did go in and express their love without having to say what we knew was the inevitable. I started calling some of her friends from her cell phone to tell them and I broke at the same moment, same words, each time, and had to hand the phone to one of my cousins to take over. I had to tell them to come see her within 3 days because that's all she has. But I felt and still feel that I have to make the calls, even though everyone is offerring to do it for me. I have to face this, denial is passed. I have to face this and calling them is the way I know how. I can't turn away anymore, I can't hide from it. It's happening soon, and I wish I'd been able to spend more time with her and share with her more of the things in life I love. She never got to watch the Star Wars films with me, she never got to watch the LOTR trilogy with me, she never got to see my finished books or see me reach my dreams. She never got to see me really happy. We both love Survivor and every season, on every Thursday night we have always sat and watched the new episode together and talked about who we wanted to win. On Thursday I had to work late and got home only in the last five minutes of the show. And afterwards she was too tired to stay awake. We missed out on the very last night we would ever have had to spend together, because I was working late. And now in a few more days she'll be gone. And I am in a flip-flopping state of denial and remorse, where one minute I'm reflecting on how I love her and am about to lose her, to the next minute where it doesn't seem real, where I'm in the hospital to see her like every other time I've spent with her in the hospital in the last 22 months.
I have to go to sleep, I can't keep my eyes open. Tomorrow is another long day. I probably won't be home for a few days to a week, I'll be staying at my cousin's place near the hospital. I don't know what else to say. I'm half awake with mind spinning, to half asleep with mind numb.

Ron,
Know my thoughts are with you old friend. You know that I understand all too well what you're going through. It’s strange that we should have to experience this so close together. I'm sure it's even harder on you. It's usually harder to lose a mother than a father. I wish there was more I could do but I know that there isn't.
You've been my friend for several years now, and, although we've never actually met, I think of you often. My sincerest condolences.

Thank you everyone. Thank you, Scott. Your message means a great deal to me for the connection that we now share. But no less are the other's messages received and appreciated.
Flo Fett, I don't know why I never showed my mom your picture before, but I guess there was so much going on that I told her about you but didn't show her the pic. Yesterday I printed the pic of you holding your medal from the race, and gave it to her. It gave a lot of satisfaction to my mom, and her brother and sister and everyone who now sees you and what you did for my mom. Thank you.

I got so burned up yesterday. The same doctor who gave my family the news and then gave it to me, walked in and pissed me off so bad I had him out in the hall yelling in his face. I'm a pretty passive person and usually I'm the one pulling my cousin Jeff back and urging him to let it go, not get in a person's face over something, but yesterday it was Jeff edging between me and this doctor trying to push me back. I didn't like this guy from the moment I met him. On Saturday I had gone home for awhile and Jeff called me and asked me to return because the doc was there, a specialist who had been brought in. I headed back and he called me again on my cell and asked me how close I was to the hospital, how soon I'd get there. I knew something was up, then. When I met Dr. Dkhed he directed me into the nurse's lounge and asked me to sit down. That was all I needed to know. I said as I sat down, lay it on me, I know what's coming. He went into a 10 minute long speech about this and that and yada yada, and I said, "Cut to the chase! I know what you're going to say, so just say it!" And finally he said it, and urged me to accept the stopping of dialysis, and left. She has kidney failure that can't be reverse, cant' be fixed. The tumor is blocking the kidneys, and they can't operate because the kidneys are blocked so the anestegia can't go through, so she would die on the table. Die if they do, die if they don't. That was then, so then yesterday when he came into her ICU room I wondered what the hell he'd want there. He stood there without a word and stared at my mother. She opened her eyes and did not know who he was, hadn't seen him before. He didn't say who was, just stared at her. Then he said, "You're going to be fine, your kidneys are working fine and the dialysis is working." She said, who are you? I said, doc, would you please introduce yourself? So he said "I'm Dr. Dkhed, doctor of urology, and from my part everything is good, my job here is done, and the dialysis is working." The *******. She is not getting dialysis and she knows that. I pushed him out into the hall and pulled him away from the room and got right in his face and went off on him. WTF is wrong with him? You don't tell a person who is dying of kidney failure that their kidneys are working fine and they'll be okay. WTF kind of BS lie is that? He said he believes in giving people hope so they don't worry so much before dying. I couldn't believe he had the gall to go in there and lie to her, and kept yelling atr him. He said, Ive been doing this for 30 years, you don't tell me how to do my job. And I yelled, You don't lie to my mother! You don't tell someone who is dealing with the horror of dying from kidney failure, that their kidneys are doing fine, and lie to them and confuse them. He stormed away and said he wouldn't come back, and I said if you have something to contribute then help her, but don't lie to her and confuse her! When we went back inside my mom was frantic and asking for another kidney specialist to talk to her. She wanted to know, if her kidneys were working fine, then why was she dying? That was what thet godammned idiot doctor did to her, and it took a long time for me and Jeff to calm her and explain it to her. I demanded an administrator come see me because I wanted to file a complaint against that ******* for bad beside manner and causing more fear and harm than any good he thought he was doing. I plan to follow up on this, because even a day later I'm hating this guy even more. Not because he was the bearer of bad news who told me on Satarday that I was losing her, but for serving no purpose other than to lie to her face and confuse her and scare her even more, and without intriducing himself and explaining what he was there for.
You know, I've been hearing it said that it is unheard of for someone with stage 4 breast cancer to last 23 months, and my mom has. She is such a strong woman, always has been, and this came so suddenly. She knew she was running out of time, but nobody expected a few days. I went from the shock of hearing 3 months on Friday to hearing 3 days on Saturday. But she is still looking strong and coherent (which she won't be when her potassium goes high again), and its hard to believe that she might be, probably will be, gone after today or tomorrow. I'm home for a short time to get some things done, but I feel like I need to get back ASAP. You all know this...every minute is precious, especially when those minutes are so numbered.
