IMO no one will ever do as good a job as Chris Reeves.
I think Tom Whelling does a great job on Smallville, however.

Tom Whelling does a good job as a teen superman
Justin

Christopher Reeve is Superman. Those other jokers aren't worthy to even kiss his boots.
By the way, the guy in Smallville isn't playing Superman, he's playing a teenage Clark Kent. He's not even Superboy.
Darth Vegas
09-29-2002, 11:22 AM
Yeah but by the way Clark Kent will become Superman, and Superboy was only a clone of SUperman. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif
But yeah, Christopher Reeve is defineately the best Superman.
You can't use that argument Justin, because Clark Kent and Superman are the same person.
Justin
09-29-2002, 11:26 AM
Actually, no; Clark Kent and Superman are both Kal-El from Krypton, but they are two seperate personas. Clark acts diferently when he's Superman than when he's just Clark.
So while this guy might make a good Clark Kent, we won't know how good a Superman he is until he puts on the suit.

Christopher Reeves' the best, I think.
I don't know that Tom Whelling from Smallville but Dean Cain is quite good too in Lois & Clark.

Christopher Reeve is without a doubt the best, his portrayal is absolutely flawless.
And Justin is right, Clark Kent and Superman are two different people, the thing that I love about Superman is that he is a dual personality. There is a thick, black line seperating Clark and Superman. On one side, is Clark Kent, on the other, Superman, and never do the twain meet. That is why it is so hard for an actor to play Superman, you really have to master two roles. Clark is nerdy and insecure, Superman is strong willed, moralistic and supremely confident, so you need an actor who can easily bounce back and forth between these two persona, Chris Reeve does this flawlessly

DEAN CAIN!!!!!!
Well they are all good, Reeves being the original and the best. Dean Cain doesn't act the way Reeves did, as a nerdy kind of Clark Kent, but Tom Welling acts and even looks like Reeves.
Justin
09-29-2002, 11:45 PM
Dean Cain doesn't look anything like Superman. His face is to round and boyish. Christopher Reeve looked like he could have walked right of the comic book page.

Dean Cain. I loved the show Lois and Clark, I have never seen Smallville, and the Superman movies were boring, IMHO.
Besides, Dean Cain actually had some muscle. Christopher Reeve looked too skinny.

Dean Cain doesn't act the way Reeves did, as a nerdy kind of Clark Kent, but Tom Welling acts and even looks like Reeves.
You mean Reeve, unless your'e referring to George Reeves who played Supes in the 50's. But, even though I liked Lois and Clark, I still think that Dean Cain's portrayal is all wrong. Clark Kent IS a nerd, that is who he is. He is a lonely, isolated outsider. He doesn't really fit in, or belong with anyone, that is what he is. Without Clark nerdiness, the character makes no sense. The way that I look at it is, Clark Kent is the man I really am, but Superman is the man I wish I could be. Unless Clark is, socially backwards, the fantasy aspect is missing. IOW, Clark's nerdiness is a necessary counterpoint to Superman's coolness. If Clark is cool too, then you lose something essential.
and the Superman movies were boring, IMHO.
I say, get an attention span! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif Just kidding. What on Earth is boring about it? I prefer a slow paced movie that emphasizes human emotion, to a special effects extravaganza with no plot and no emotion. The original Superman is great because it emphasizes the human story, character development and emotion, rather than special effects and battles.

Christopher Reeve may have been skinny, but so was comic.

Christopher Reeve's muscles were big enough in the first two Superman films, but I think he quit working out after that, lol.

Let me clarify....By that, I meant that he actually looked like a super hero and not a skinny actor playing a super hero.
I was actually more interested in the super hero aspect of Superman rather than the nerdy reporter aspect. That is my preference.

Justin

It's Christopher Reeve, not Reeves.
There was a George Reeves who played Superman in the TV show from the 50s, or 60's. You left him off the list!
I think he committed suicide because he was typecast as Superman, and no one would hire him for anything else.
Darth Vegas
10-07-2002, 12:43 AM
Justin, I left George Reeves off of the list, because the original Superman t.v. series sucked, who cares if it's a classic, I'm sure no one around here liked it that much.
You do not need to correct people over the extra s addaed to the end of Chris Reeve's name, it is absolutely something you could just overlook, you know he wasn't talking about George Reeves, there is no need to nit pick at the little things.

Oh come on, if people were mispelling your name in their posts, you'd be pissed off.
I don't think I was out of line for telling people how it's really spelled.
As for the original Superman tv show sucking so bad that George Reeves doesn't deserve to be on this list-
you put Dean Cain on here. 'Nuff said.
Hey, by the way- the first time I came to this thread, I noticed you mispelled "Christopher" in your poll options, but I didn't point that out because I didn't want you to look stupid.
Darth Vegas
10-08-2002, 03:27 AM
Yes I did put Dean Cain on their Justin, and some people here voted for him, it was in no way a perfect show, but it was much better then the original.
It was an s, not a big deal.
Oh and I did not misspell it, my keyboard keys were sticking, especially the h it just so happened, I have no trouble spelling.
There is no one on this board old enough to even remember the original series, so logically I did not put that on the list of choices, because I knew before I even made the poll that most people would vote for Christopher Reeve.
I don't get pissed off when people misspell my name, I don't find it to be that big of a deal, especially a simple s added top end of the name.
People make typing errors dude, and it's not called misspelling.

It has to be Christopher Reeve because he was the one I remember from my childhood and will for ever be cast in a rosy glow...ahh christmas movies, they were always superman...*sigh* style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif

But where's the "Who's the best Lois?" poll? Because Erica Durance is right at the top of my list! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

You guys, Tom Welling didn't even WANT to play Superman in the new films. I went to Kryptonsite.com and there is all this bitching about how Bryan Singer sucks for casting someone else other than Tom Welling, but even if he had been asked, he would have turned it down.
So we will never know wether or not Tom Welling is a good Superman. He may be good as young Clark Kent, but he's not Superman.

He's Kal-El of Krypton, and he's Clark Kent of Kansas. That's two-thirds of the person that Superman really is. That's enough to get a constitutional amendment ratified. He will be Superman, they've shown enough hints that we know that eventually he's going to don the cape and tights (even one episode showed a vision of his future where you see his cape flying in space).

Can't disagree there, but I think Tom Welling has a lot of potential, and so far he's done a great job as young Clark.

Christopher Reeve. The man was perfect at the role. He played Superman and Clark Kent as 2 distinct people. This is so people don't realize who Clark Kent really is.
Dean Cain however played Superman and Clark Kent the same way. He even carried himself the same way. Plus he just didn't look the part to me.
Tom Welling however I think should've been offered and he should have taken the role of Superman. He looks the part very well. I have seen Alex Ross's drawings of him as Supes and I like it. He very much looks the part of a young Superman.

Even though I watched SUPERMAN a lot when I was little, I prefer Dean Cain to Christopher Reeves. I liked Reeves, but I thought Cain was better. I also like George Reeves since I grew up on reruns of the old Superman show and seemingly weekly marathons on a local channel. I don't like Tom Whelling at all, though.

Anybody who says Dean Cain is a better Superman than Christopher Reeve has never read the comics. Reeve's Superman is much closer to the way Superman is in the comics.
