View Full Version : The Star Wars Insider

Here's a thread specifically to discuss all things having to do with the Star Wars Insider magazine, now headed up by IDG and Lucasfilm as of July 2004.
Hopefully we'll have a few "special" visitors drop in from time to time. Keep your eyes open.
Njoy.

I'm fairly new to Star Wars, and brand spankin' new to these boards, so if this question seems a bit stupid, or if this happens to be in the wrong forum, please forgive me.
Anyhoo, aside from signing up for Hyperspace on the official site, is there any way to purchase Star Wars Insider as it comes out?

You can buy the Insider on the newsstand in most parts of Canada and the USA, however it ships to retail a few weeks later than it does to most subscribers.
Since I mostly read it for the fiction and the OT content, niether of which are all that time sensitive, the time difference doesn't make much of a difference to me.

As a Swede, it's not as easy to get hold of the Insider, I know at least one shop here that sells it. What does the Insider really contain? Would it be worth an effort to get hold of it?

how have IDG and Lucasfilm done with the mag? Are there still the same problems with supscription and circulation? I know i have read at least a couple people complaining they where getting them late, which is still better than it used to be when we where lucky to get them at all.

Well, I actually like the old format a little better, but I suppose I should give it more time. I've been buying from Border'd for the past few months, I supposedly got a subscription for Christmas, but since it was sent in via mail, I haven't heard of anything about my membership (hyperspace, etc.).

Not at the price it sells for in Europe. The UK version is always one month behind but they're both made obselete with the speed and availabilty of the information on the internet. There's also alot of articles that are really down to your own taste but I'm not a fan of collecting so half of the mag seems like a big merchandise advert.

I bought the latest Insider today for 5.99 and read through the vital parts in about 6 minutes. What a waste of money it is, and I had not bothered buying it in a very long time. But today I was bored. I mean seriously, what a waste of money and time. The prequel news are nothing that I hadn't read on the web up to 3 months before the issue came out (every time, with every issue, it's 3 to 4 months late of new news.), and the photos are also nothing that hadn't already been seen on the web. And any interviews with McKallum are lacking and restrained of real solid dirt, and if he reveals anything it's still 2 to 3 months after I read it on T'bone's site or elsewhere. So what's the attraction? Damned if I know.

Argh! I wanted to be in ignorance of all spoilers, and I'm trying hard to be, but it is so difficult because there's nothing else to do and its too far away to not think about it. It's such a long way from here. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/banghead.gif

<span style='color:blue'>Agreed. I've never got that membership kit. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/banghead.gif Well, I got the new Insider with the Mandalorian article in it, but I really want the last issue. It's not really a case of wanting the magazine that bad, but the fact I did not get it when I'm a paying member.
Tovor, the main reason I got Insider was for the EU stuff. The first issue I got in the mail was the first one with the new publishers. They took out "holonet news," which is the one thing I wanted to read the most in insider. If it wasn't for any future short stories, I'd stop being a member.</span>

Heh, my Insider/Fanclub subscription ran out last June and I never bothered to renew it. I had been a member for 2 years before that. Guess when I got my "membership kit.."
Go on, guess....
Ok, whatever you said, you're wrong.
I got it 6 weeks ago....to my old address. fully five + months after I ceased being a member of the SWFC.

i've been part of the fan club since '97, shortly after the SEs came out, and the only time i had a problem is when i moved a few years ago, and i think i missed all of two issues, and the only other time was when my subscription ran out and i didn't renew in time
other than that, i've had no problems

you have been lucky, i was a member in 97 as well for 3 years or so. I eventually just let it end because of all the hassle.
That said i am a sucker, and will probably rejoin next month. I just enjoy being a member of the fan club more than i need the mag. Plus my HS account ran out so.. not big fan of HS either, but it isnt much money and some of the stuff is cool

A lot of magazines will print the subscription expiration next to your mailing address. Insider didn't used to, but I looked again and noticed a "S/005" on mine just under the 5 digit zip-code in the upper right hand corner of the label. I can't be sure, but September '05 sounds about right for when my subscription should run out.
Again, I'm just guessing, but I wouldn't mind hearing from other people what's on their magazine. Just to compare to see if my theory has any basis. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

Does anyone spoiler free like to read the Prequel Update? It doesn't really give anything about the movie, but talks about how stuff is coming together, and what their doing to the film. But when they saturate it with pictures! I get angry. I don't want to see that stuff. They should be smarter then that, no?

No
If they didn't publish those pictures they'd sell even fewer magazines than they do already. Although for the record, as someone spoiler free I look at the pictures, but I don't read the Prequel update or the captions, so I really have no idea what they are supposed to represent except for random actors standing in front of blue screens.

I understand that, but I would prefer if they, like, put all of the pictures in one section, like after the Prequel Update, so I wouldn't have to look at them.

i think starwars insider has gone downhill. All they talk about these days is how they made the movies, and little or nothing about the EU, and who knows, IDG will most likely get ride of the short fiction, it wasen't in issue 80# when there should have been one by Karen Traviss.
Sabrina Fried
02-03-2005, 11:24 PM
WAY downhill.
I'm actually longing for the days when it was between publishers and wasn't being released at all.
Not a single issue IDG has put out so far has survive a flip test by me. There's just nothing in that magazine worth reading unless you are brand spaking new to SW, and even then, five minutes on Google could find you stuff that is so much better.

I'll second that style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif
Paizo was at the very least doing better than WOTC was when they were publishing it directly, there was still LOADS of room for improvement, of course, but they were doing a good job.
The best Insiders are still the REALLY old school ones (that predate the Official Site) that have Anthony Daniels' column in them. I mean of the few of those I have and/or been able to track down, I still re-read some of the articles in them fairly regularly.

daniels's wonder column was awesome, i loved reading that, and i was sad when they stopped doing them when ep1 rolled around, cause it was hilarious
i agree that the insider has gone downhill, i don't even reread them anymore, i used to read each new issue twice at least before shelving it, and now i mostly just look at the pictures, though i seem to be seeing them online before i get the mag
but no worries, my parents pay for the subscription, so i'll get it as long as i'm not paying style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif

I get the Insider mainly for the fiction in them. The news tends to be way out of date since I get Hyperspace. Then you get most of the content on Hyperspace before you get the mag. I would prefer if you got different content in each--that would be really cool. Oh, well. I did prefer it when Paizo was publishing the magazine. I loved the Holonet news.
And now I've gotten a total of 3 membership packages! Not that it's much to be impressed with! I'm really not interested in a poster of Legos!! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/crazy.gif I got the third membership package the other day and I got another copy of the 2004 calendar! What's the deal with that!?
But I do like Hyperspace a lot. I like the web docs and pictures, but after ROTS I don't really see the point. But we'll see... style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hehe.gif
