I'm starting this (it may fly, it may not) as a thread to discuss and review current film releases as they happen in the UK.

I know there are other film threads - but the problem for us Brits is that you Uncle Sam types usually get the films before us - meaning that if we read the thread (say for Kill Bill Vol 2) when you guys are posting it, then we get spoiled. If we wait for it to be released over here before we read / post then the thread is pretty dead and old news.

I'd ask American senate members please not to post inhere - because the chances are you will have seen all the films before us!

This is for Brit film fans to keep up to date with current releases and to recommend good flicks that we've seen.

THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT

I caught this yesterday. I'd give it a heavy recommendation to anyone who likes intelligent genre pieces or anyone who enjoyed (as I did) Donnie Darko. I found it truely creep at times - and I don't easily get creeped out at the flicks. Go see it.

As I just posted in another thread - See Shaun of the Dead, because;

a) it's hilarious
b) it stars all the guys from Spaced - which is my favourite sitcom ever, and was also funnier than a badger with a bullwhip !?!
c) it has Zombies in it...
d) ...which they kill with vinyl LPs at one point
e) has a great soundtrack
f) the word c*** is used wonderfully in the first scene.

Look, just go... OK?

Shaun's the only film at the cinema I want to see at the minute. And I can't be arsed waiting for Kill Bill 2 (whens it out?) so I'm just dling a dodgey TMD camrip at the mo. Stupid IRC and it's queues, it'll probably be out by the time it's my turn.

Worth seeing in a cinema - I've seen it twice now and each time the crowd's been great...

Then get the spaced series DVDs ready for when you get home... Champion night out and in.

I can't wait for 'Bill pt.2

'Dogs was a phenomena over here, but only 'cause the BBFC banned the video release and everyone went mad and saw it at the cinema, like a million times.

Kill Bill on friday, la la lala la... Can't wait.

Oh, and if your four months behind cj, you should be gettin' Big Fish about now - see that, it'll be more fun if you're a sentimental sod like me.

But any film with ewan McGregor and Albert Finney in has got to be seen, right?.

^ Or Brum mate, that's good for Cinema too... I must admit though, I envy Badly's Londoness.

I've read the script to Kill Bill vol. 2 and enjoyed it very much indeed, there's some great moments in it and I can't wait to see the Samurai training sequence with Pai mei (excuse the spelling if that's wrong)... It's got better dialogue, but less action... It's more like you'd expect from Taratino - but vol. 1 was brilliant 'cause it was pure unfettered Hong Kong style shenanigans.

Here in Bath, we only have two cinemas with one screen each. Sigh.

Darth Badly

I know Bath quite well - a good friend of mine used to work in the tourist office there.

Saw THE GIRL NEXT DOOR last night because Kill Bill Vol 2 was all sold out. My Uncle Ronnie had recommended TGND, but it was the fairly lame teenage comedy that it looked like from the trailer. Only good thing was the fact that the chick from 24 (Jack's daughter) looks drop dead gorgeous in every scene.

^ mmmmm.... Elisha Cuthbert... Very georgeous when she's not being bloody kidnapped, like she is every sodding week on the Jack Bauer Power Hour.

Kim Bauer is the new variation on Star Trek's expendable crew member... Or the Dr. Who assistants ("Oh, I've been captured").

No one saw 'Bill then, going tomorrow.

She's very lovely in TGND but is about the only worthwhile thing in it.

I'm watching the third season of the JACK BAUER POWER HOUR on Sky at the moment and they've given Kim a really dodgy wig to wear. Not sure why.

Go and see this movie now. Great script, great everything.

I'm dying to see Zaitochi - I love Takeshi Kitano... Just watched Battle Royale II, and though he's not in it much, he's still cool. That's a great - if a little bloated - film too.

Zaitochi is available on CDwow for £8.99 btw - ordering now. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

I have BRII on DVD

It's longer. more ponderous, more political - but equally as violent... It's also one of the most Anti-American films I've ever seen...

Very political, very topical - about how terrorists are 'created'...

I loved it though.

You can get it through far east DVD retailers online - mine came from www.dddhouse.com

Yep, 28 Days Later opened here first.

The scenes of London were shot very early post-dawn in the morning.

They look great - but then later in the film when there are dead bodies everywhere I wondered why there were NONE in the first twenty minutes? Bit of fake suspense there for the benifit of the lead character who wakes up.

SOTD should be out in the States soon, I would have thought.

Meanwhile this week's big opener in the UK is TROY.

It's out tonight - Friday 14th May - in the capital and from the 21st all over the UK.

The trailer I saw last week with Van Helsing (utter bollocks - don't waste your time going) made it look a bit like someone has gone a bit mad with the old CGI programme. There's one battle scene with like a million ships in! Anyway it weighs in at a mighty 163 minutes long so let's hope they have a screenplay to back up the effects.

I hope you don't mind me chiming in your UK film thread being from the states... I happen to like various British entertainment imports... and occassionally I hear of a film there, like SOTD, or 28 Days Later before it was brought here and get interested.

I watch BBC America from time to time, usually to catch The Thin Blue Line, Black Adder, or Monty Python... or an occassional episode of The Office which I like, but can't get my wife to watch... I've yet to see this show Spaced though, and I hear great things... I wonder if it'll come (or has already) to BBC America... how old is it?

pudooku
05-14-2004, 03:55 PM
Spaced won't come to BBC America I doubt - it's a channel4 product over here...

The DVDs are a worth while investment as they have some truly wonderful extras on them as well - the best of which is the homage-ometer thingy on the second one... which tracks exactly when they're ripping off a film or TV show... there's a truly genius skit in the second series based on the end of ESB, where a character yawns at the point right after the main character says "I'll meet you at the rendevous point" - and it sounds just like Chewie. It never fails to make me smile style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif And then they do the Luke Leia holding hands thing (the final shot where they're on the medical frigate)... Genius (even used John William's score)

I'm gonna pass on Troy i reckon, more interested in seeing the new Jim Jarmusch film - but that'll not get to Leicester for a week or two...

Is anyone going to see The Football Factory? I'd like some opinion on that.. not sure.

Did anyone see the Eddie Izzard documentary trailer Diva 51? There's a link to it from the Aint It Cool? site.

Pudooku

kopernikuz
05-14-2004, 04:12 PM
Now see... this is precisely why I want to hang out in this thread... otherwise I'd never hear about some of these films I think I'd like.

The Football Factory looks very interesting... I'm a... well um... soccer fan... lol... though I'm an American who's never understood our obsession with calling it soccer... you use your foot much more in it than in American Football where its only used for kickoffs, fieldgoals, and extra points... silly.

Anyway, I love it, but pretty much am only able to follow the American MLS teams because of where I live. I actually lived in Columbus when the Crew was instituted as one of the inaugural teams of the MLS, and Columbus is the home to the first stadium in American built specifically for soccer. And therefore am a McBride fan, but now he's over there with you folks, I believe... anyway, I'm not able to follow international football as much as I'd like, but am well aware of the rabid fan base it has. This film looks very interesting to say the least.

These are like "gangs" who support teams and prepare for battles at the matches? Am I understanding it correctly? How realistic is that (having never been to an English football match of course)... it sounds wild. They look like they're going to war.

It hit theaters today, yes?

pudooku
05-14-2004, 04:22 PM
^ there is a well established sub-culture to football that invloves well organised gang culture - and yes they pre-arrange fights to coincide with matches... which comes first, the football or the violence, is a very cloudy area...

In the UK this week 15 or so guys were sent to prison for arranging a fight over the internet at a train station.

The main instigator wasn't a supporter of either of the teams whose gang's fought - he was a 35 year old history teacher style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif

It's a very wierd thing - you can read about it here

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/3695393.stm

And that culture is what The Football Factory is based on - another good film about this is ID...

I read that the Thunderbirds movie started out being more camp for adults and then the studios decided to take it in a family film direction, and make it for kids.

I had no idea this was a British show... the reruns air on TechTV over here and most of the characters sound decidedly American... have they been redubbed here? Or was that the intent of the creators?

Darth Badly

Thanks for PM-ing the tips for Leicester, Pudooku. I didn't get any time for the space centre in the end - work drew me back to London.

Oh yes, I know Syston very well...

I live in Braunstone... Not far from the M1/M69 J21...

You got OK weather too... That always makes for a better wedding...

It snowed when I got married (it was February though...), it was about 0 degrees when we were doing the photos...

... Going to see The Football Factory tomorrow - I think... Any final thoughts, has anyone seen it?

I was dragged to see Troy by my girlfriend yesterday and its poo. Peter O''Tool was the only saving grace in a film that was completely destroyed by miscasting. It seemed to consist of a fight scene, talking, a battle scene and then the whole thing repeated over. 4 times. The love scene between Pitt and that chick from The Mummy was soooo unintentionally funny (she attempts to cut his throat and ends up shagging him less then a minute later for no apparent reason) that the audience burst out laughing.

^Wasn't it awful!
The scenes in Brad Pitt's tent were some of the worst scenes in any film - inc. the 'I hate you/I love you' scene.
Don't forget about Orlando Bloom's 'acting'; Helen's 'acting'; a script that must have been written by a monkey; and the fact that it is so historically inaccurate it makes 'Pirates of the Carribean' look like a gritty drama...

Well I saw Day After Tomorrow and it was a bit dull frankly. I'm sure the 15 minutes of effects would be more exciting if I had seen it on the big screen but I'm not paying £10 for that. Hmm, maybe Shrek 2 will save us cause so far its been a pretty terrible summer for popcorn movies.

Just saw Harry Potter - absolutely excellent. Not just a great children's film, but a great film. Lovely touches, like each season presented with a humorous shot of the Whomping Willow. Cuaran has made a remarkable film here - it's such a shame he hasn't handled the entire series. Much better than the book, I really can't praise this film enough.

I think I must be the only person in Britain who actually liked this film and thought Brad acquitted himself well in it, even though it wasn't his best work, certainly not on a par with Seven, Twelve Monkeys, Fight Club or Snatch for acting. It was also a good showcase for non US talent (Bana, Bean, O'Toole, Cox). I enjoyed it and I am not ashamed.

I couldn't get into this Harry Potter malarky - it seems like one of those BBC Sunday afternoon serials they show around Christmas with just as dodgey special effets, some of the worst I've seen since Spawn. I think part of this comes down to the fact I really loathe kids attempting to act but when the whole film is 3 children forcing lines for 2 hours my head feels like it might melt in a mess of cringe.

So the question - can these kids act yet? They sure as hell couldn't in the first.

Yep, Harry and the girl have improved, and Ron is now the Weakest Link.

Why did they use a dodgy looking special effects rat (Ron's) instead of a real one?

I watched a documentary on the History channel the other day about the "real" King Arthur, which asked and answered the question about whether he was a real person or not. Turns out he most likely was not, that he was a legend made up from the deeds of several different men and armies and stories of war heroes during the time the Brits of the 6th century were warring against the Saxons. After being driven off of England and pushed to France, centuries later when the Brits launched a war to retake England from the Saxons, they used the heroics and legend of the mythical King Arthur as a rallying cry to fight with courage and determination in the spirit of King Arthur. Perhaps you Brits can help me out with this because I don't remember the details well enough, but the documentary explained that "Arthur" was most likely not a name but a title, because "Arth" often preceded many ancient British labels for military leaders. So after all that, at the end of the documentary which did a thourough job of explaining how Arthur was not a real person at all, it was pretty funny when the trailer for the King Arthur movie came on and the narration announced it as "The true story of the real King Arthur"! LOL!

I just saw Spidey 2, and I'll tell you without spoiling anything that the fight scenes with Doc Oc were so visually well done, and so energetic and exciting, that I was pleasantly surprised. I hadn't expected the FX to be bad in the fight scenes, but I hadn't expected them to be that good. And yes, it was dull in a few places, slow would be more appropriate, but it was a good emotional story regardless, definately worth seeing once.

Gazelle's Recent Movie Reviews

1. "The Ladykillers" - nice idea, spoilt by heavy swearing and rather swift paced last fifteen minutes. 5/10

2. "Shrek 2" Fun as always. Maybe not as good as the first, but not a bad attempt at a sequel. 7/10

3. "Farenheit 911"- a must see movie. I was horrified. During the scene where Bush is reading a children's storybook on 9.11 I had to restrain myself from letting out a strange noise. Still not sure if I was going to laugh or scream. Very weird experience. 8/10

4. "Spiderman 2" - I agree that the villain was a good deal better and the fight scenes superb but it was very "American Pie" at times. Could have been retiitled "How to be Spiderman when You're a Teen" 7/10

5. "The Day After Tomorrow" - Didn't care what happened to any of them so it failed on me. Good effects but a movie needs a lot more. 4/10

Looking forward to "Arthur" and "Garfield"

Was bloody great, quality acting and action, especially the car chase.

Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter... and Spring (Korean film):

THE BOURNE SUPERMACY - the sequel to last years BOURNE IDENTITY. Good solid spy thriller. Nice scenes of Berlin which pleased me as I was just there last month.

AE FOND KISS - Small Scottish film about a mixed race romance in Glasgow. My girlfriend liked it. Probably a good date movie if ya wanna make your date happy. I thought it was ok. Nice performances. Viv said to me afterwards that it was unusual for having a scene of a man going down on a woman, but I said that wasn't that unusual listing Thelma & Louise, Betty Blue etc which also feature action south of the boarder.

Yeah, it was a very good piece of filmmaking, whether the right-wing choose to see that or not. Films like that need to be made - we can't be expected to roll over and bark when our leaders want us to, especially when they are of such dubious virtue...

mazzy
10-12-2004, 08:40 AM
It was a good piece of documentary, Moore has a way of presenting the facts clearly. We all know what stand-point he is coming from and we do not expect a balanced film - but what comes without a tarnish of personal opinion or experience - I think probably very little.

Don't get me wrong, they are both 5/5 films, but I still prefer Crouching Tiger, because it seemed the more complete emotional experience. Hero was not thin on plot and emotion, but slightly less involving. It clocks in at 99 minutes, which was the perfect length.

Turn left out of the doors and follow the road until you reach the junction, just past the bus station. Then turn right, then left past the Halifax bank on the corner, keep going straight down there until you see the cinema on the left. it's past all the 'Bath City College' buildings. OK, I have a slightly off-topic but amusing story concerning Little Britain.

During my degree I worked as a carer part-time, the woman WAS Andy! I couldn't believe it when I first saw LB - they had captured the essence and evil of the woman I worked for for three years.

The scene in the library actually happened to me. She wanted a Dauphnie Du Mauriey book (sp? - who cares?) so I read out the back of about 20 books and she didn't want any! In the end we decided on the diary of Anne Frank - she left it sitting on the counter for months and never opened it!
I can only imagine that either David Walliams or Matt Lucus must have observed me that day in the library, or any of the other times I took her out for a ponderous and painfull trip. She even used to spit food onto the ground like Andy.

Amazing accuracy.

Geoffrey Rush is a fine actor. Apart from in Frida, but that's an awful film anyway. Thought he was great as the Marquis de Sade in Quills.

Completely agree with you Rojo. The audience seemed very much in favour of Bush - how they could boo, jeer and shout out 'no!' when being presented with the fact that the CIA now acknowledges that there were no WMDs in Iraq, just epitomises the blinkered view we in Britian seem to be getting from America.
I would have liked Michael Moore to have been less humourous and more political, though.

I might download The Grudge but I doubt I'd pay to see it. I just watched The Incredibles CAM Rip and I'm kinda wondering - where the hell is it? I want to go see it on the big screen but it's not bloody out.

And also of note: avoid Seed of Chucky unless your a fan of the red haired loon. It ain't a horror, it's an outright comedy that is rather amusing.

And if it ever gets released before the next ice age - Team America absolutely rocks as our friends over the pond might say. It may have had the WORST trailer I've ever seen for a film but the opening sequence in Paris is worth the admission alone.

Absolutely - but didn't it just bring what you already knew to a new level? No matter how many times you've seen diagrams, recited the names before exams or can poke at where it should be, there was something (for me) in actually seeing the organ or whatever being removed from an actual human.
I found the removal of skin particularly interesting - I knew about it being done, but actally seeing how 'easy' it was... fascinating.
I also enjoyed his Autopsy a year or so ago. You're right, there should be more like this on tv.

I thought it was really hillariously bizaarly badly funny. I think I enjoyed it style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/drool.gif but it was odd.

Anyone watching 'Look Around You'? Very funny although a little goes a long way.

It's a spoof 70's/80's children's documentary on BBC 2 Monday nights 10pm.

I caught it for the first time last night. It wasn't hilarious (kind of gently funny) but it was amazingly observed, complete with the sound of the button being pushed during the old BBC2 ident. I like spotting Pegg, Lucas et all popping up in their mates' comedy.

Although Peter Serfafinowiz will always remind me of a particular movie line....

Beatiful moment when he get the paintball in his bits. In fact Spaced - just dang beautiful, and far too close to the truth for comfort some of the time.

What was funnier - Dwayne being shot in the balls, or Dwayne being set upon by teenage chavs ala Jurassic Park?

Jedinet: Prowse in "Saving Star Wars" (http://www.jedinet.com/miscellaneous/#73382,20050208,7268)

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>The movie was shown on Sunday night at the Sci-Fi London Film Festival and tells the story of a band of crazy Star Wars fans who kidnap Lucas, the movie series’ legendary filmmaker.[/b][/quote]

Anybody see this film?
