Amethyst, all I said was that I'm not into yaoi and as I can tell you're not into yuri. We're in similar boats, perhaps.

I like yuri because, like you said, it involves two girls, more than likely to whom I would be physically attracted (even if they're animated) and I find it to be visually compelling (not emotionally fulfilling).

I don't enjoy yaoi because it involves two guys and I am not attracted to men. With that said, I don't hate yaoi, I just have no interest in it.

By the way, Blue may have caught herself malaria. /_\ Poor sod... she's only getting the results in tomorrow. Will keep you posted on it.

And I think you might've guessed I still haven't done the next pic post. Will have to wait for tomorrow so I can get more pics. My net's been a ***** lately. -___-;;;

I'm just giving you info, Ami. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

Poor Blue!! Tell her I hope it's nothing serious. I would tell you to hug her for me, but:
1) With all this talk of yaoi and yuri, I'd better not style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif
2) Seeing as how she's real sick, I wouldn't want Ami to catch it too

1) Thanks, Eva-Kun. ^_^. The doctor hasn't phoned yet with my blood results. -_- Medical center ga baka.

2) I have never thought of Ami in that way style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wacko.gif . That's just disturbing.

3) You don't really know what malaria is, do you? If you did, you'd know I can't give it to Ami. It's a parasite transmitted by a certain species of mosquito. I think it's only in Southern Africa. Not sure. I went to the Kruger National Park, big malaria area, a couple weeks ago and now I've got the symptoms (Headache, flu-like). -_- The mosquitos where we live can't transmit malaria so Ami has nothing to worry about. I unfortunately could die. If I have it. -_-

Anway, Great pics, Ami! Seen 'em all, though. ^_^

*Waves yaoi flag* I see nothing wrong with yaoi or turi. I'm not too interested in yuri though, for the reasons Ami stated above.

Now, I should probably get off the web before I run my parents' phone bill through the roof again. -_-

Malaria hasn't been in the US in a long time, if ever. That's why I wasn't sure. I knew the mosquito things, I just didn't know if it was contagious or not.

<span style="color:000070">I don't suppose someone amongst you anime gurus could be of assistance?

Recently I saw a video with clips from an anime that I think is called "Memories." From my information it's a stand alone movie with no series involved, but I haven't been able to find it. I looked at animenation, but they didn't have it on the list of DVDs. I searched several other place as well, but I haven't found anything. I don't suppose anyone else has heard of it?

Edit: Oh, if the name is wrong perhaps a small description would help...? The clips I viewed contained two men, I assumed to be part of some investigative force. They find some sort of run down mansion that turns out to be haunted by some sort of old droid who appears in the guise of a women in a red dress. I know that's not the best description, but it's all I had to go on. It sort of reminded me of an anime style ghostbusters...

Any help on the subject would appreciated.</span>

The only thing that I know of with the title of 'Memories' is a Rahxephon movie which combines several of the early episodes in an effort to catch people up to speed.

Rahxephon, however, should be viewed in its entirety and it is an excellent series.

It debuts on DVD in the US this coming March I believe, which is also right around the time that Noir is set to be released.

BTW - The anime you're talking about does not match Rahxephon at all. I haven't seen anything like it. Sorry.

Oh, and the rest of you anime freaks - has anyone been following Wolf's Rain? And now, finally presenting the next Anime pic post!!! It took me long enough. -.-;;;

The next one on my list - I'm going alphabetically ^^;;; - is an ongoing series called X/1999 by CLAMP, the same mangakas who created things like Clover, Card Captor Sakura, Wish and several others.

The basic plot to X is that the fate of the world has been placed in the hands of two groups of young people with superhuman talents - the Dragons of Heaven, or the Seven Seals, led by Kamui Shirou, who protect the earth from destruction; and the Dragons of Earth, or the Seven Angels, led by Fuuma Manou, who believe in renewal through the destruction of the earth.

The clash comes in with the fact that members from each group are friends. Especially in the case of Kamui and Fuuma, who've been best friends since their childhood.

Alright, enough on that. It's a pic post, so, on with the pics!!! ^^

Kamui
As the central character, the whole story more or less revolves around him. It all begins with his return to Tokyo after his mother's death, where he had been told his destiny lay, and he meets up with his childhood friend Fuuma, and his younger sister Kotori. He then becomes the leader of the Seven Seals.

01 (http://www.animevisions.net/Pictures/X/X034.jpg) 02 (http://www.animevisions.net/Pictures/X/kamui01.jpg) 03 (http://www.geocities.com/banes_kamui/kamui6/kamui17.jpg) 04 (http://members.fortunecity.co.uk/banes_harem/kamui7/k47.jpg) 05 (http://members.fortunecity.co.uk/banes_harem/kamui8/k67.jpg)

Kakyou
Now here's a tragic character... Kakyou apparently lost 'that person' in his life, and thereafter attempted suicide. This being unsuccessful, he slipped into a coma, and will only awaken on the "Appointed Day" - when the fate of the world is decided. You knew a somewhat feminine white-haired bishie would come in here sometime, didn't you? ^^;;;

01 (http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Field/1111/Images/Image35.jpg) 02 (http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Club/8302/2kakyou.gif) 03 (http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Club/8302/21kakyou.gif) 04 (http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Field/1111/Images/Image10.gif)

And that's X!!! ^^ *Hopes that at least some of her links work.* -_-;;;

Btw, the matching pic for the one below can be found here (http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Courtyard/5135/kamui/clamp2.jpg).

My report of discountanimedvd.com:

The place is freaking awesome. I don't know how it's possible, but these Japanese geniuses managed to cram twenty-six Outlaw Star episodes into three discs. To get the cheap DVDs, get the ones maked "import". They're usually all crammed into a small amount of discs and are cheaper, but of good quality. Shipping usually takes from two to seven days. For me, it took six.

I totally recommend discountanimedvd.com. It's cheap and of good quality as I said before. For instance, they have the entire Cowboy Bepop series on an import DVD package for forty-eight jack (plus a few more bucks for S&H). The site includes mostly every anime series. (NOTE: There is a list of major animes at the top of the page. If the one you're looking for isn't there, it doesn't nessecarily mean the site doesn't have your anime. Just type your anime in the search engine and something is bound to come up.) Keep in mind, though, the ones not marked "import" are probably just as expensive as the ones you'll find at other websites. Oh, and the site supports PayPal as well as major credit cards.

My report of the Outlaw Star DVD import:

The video quality is excellent and the sound quality is brilliant. There is a slight delay in sound when you initialize the japanese dialogue/english subtitles version. But the english dialogue is perfect.

The DVD includes animated menus and a special feature: art galleries of the characters (disc one), the mechas (disc two), and the cover art (disc three). There is also a feature where you can disable the credit text in the theme and end songs.

I especially like the chapter selection menu. The menu shows Melfina in the tank thingy and the chapter thumbnails appear in bubbles around her. (Mel is so cute. Not exactly hot, but cute.)

One of my fears was that since the DVD was imported straight from Japan, that the english dialogue would have different voice actors. Not to worry. They're the same ones from the regular DVDs.

Oh, yeah, no worry about the discs being encoded in NTSC either. This particular DVD is an all regional code. In simple terms, it plays on on your DVD player and you don't have to worry about compatibility.

The Outlaw Star DVD import is full screen and stereo sound.

Bah.

Use SunDevilDVD.com - They're bootlegs, just like the Discount DVD ones marked IMPORT.

Real Japanese DVDs are like $80 US, the Imports are all bootlegs, hence all the typos in the subtitles and inconsistencies.

I still buy them though, and when I use SunDevilDVD they usually mail my stuff out quick, meaning it gets to me in about 3 to 4 days.

Uh, I had no idea Inspector Gadget was considered anime. Or, are you talking of another version of the cartoon?

Amethyst, I push the thread up during the day. You push it up during the night. At least, that's how it is with me. The problem in this thread is that people post but don't return, except RedMirax, BlueSaber, you, and I. And Rob, and Siamese Sith... okay, everyone's missing. I get your point.

Inspector Gadget is anime? That's like saying that Johnny Bravo won an oscar for best hair.

They showed Eva on CN today. I couldn't watch it because it was in English, I hate the dubbed versions of that show, really makes Shinji sound like a fruit.

*groan* NGE on Cartoon Network?! That's murderous in a bad way. Ever since I got the real version of Outlaw Star and saw the real version of Cowboy Bepop, I noticed how they totally ruined those shows with their editing jobs. For instance, they replace "*******" with "loser". In my dictionary, it indicates which word is vulgar or slang. Under *******, it says nothing. It's not vulgar, it's just rude.

Also other things. Rob, Red, keep us informed on how badly CN destroys NGE.

Rob
02-25-2003, 04:14 PM
Um.....no. I can't watch NGE in English, it's horrible.

Here's a list of the edits from the first episode written by Kyle Pope of http://www.animenewsnetwork.com :

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>This was a title I would never expect to see on Cartoon Network. Not even on Adult Swim. To say that Eva (as it is commonly known) is a censor's nightmare is to severely understate the situation. Granted we're only getting the first two episodes but they contain enough problematic material, especially episode #2, to make me wonder who decided to run with this title rather than something more benign like, say, Sakura Wars.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Evangelion: Angel Attack

1: Opening animation cut.

2: Misato's "Damn! Why'd I have to lose him at a time like this?" changed to "Why'd I have to lose him at a time like this?"

3: Note on Misato's photograph directing Shinji's attention to her breasts digitally removed.

4: Not an edit... Ashtray full of cigarette butts left in.

5: General's "Damn it! We've hit it with everything we've got..." changed to "We've hit with everything we've got..."

6: Not an edit... Cross-shaped explosions left in.

7: Shot of Shinji's hand covered with Rei's blood cut.

8: Not an edit... Misato's "Shinji, don't get killed out there" left in.

Along with Nadesico, Evangelion is also part of CN's Giant Robot Week. However it was far from uncut and commercial-free. Either someone lied or CN backed off. I suppose it was too much to expect that Eva could run uncut on Adult Swim much less on Toonami.[/b][/quote]

Aww, I like Sealab an' its ilk. Their refreshingly abnormal, and some of the funniest **** I've seen since I looked in the mirror. ... Okay, I was crying, are you happy now?

Aaanywayy. .... Ugh, I really like anime. I especially like Anime Music Videos, which I've taken a keen searching to of late. I mean, sure I always idly downloaded an AMV here and there through P2P, little knowing what the hours would produce. There were many gems, their were quite a few... "blegh"s. But recently, recently I wanted more. I wanted the cream of the crop. I wanted award winners. ... And damn, I likes't what I found.

The Cowboy Bepop as Bond was an amazing piece of work. The creator of this work, one Vicbond, obviously has the tool and the talent to wield them. Then I made a real discovery, certainly music-wise, with rubyeye's Mobile Suit Gundam AMV set to Tenth Man Down by Nightwish. That song is just.. wow. There is singing, and then there is Singing. I think I'll be sampling quite a bit more of this Nightwish's works. Oh, and the video was a bit kick-ass as well.

Can't wait to grab some more, but I have to alternate between AMVs, the real deal Anime, and *ahem* episodes of Sealab 2021 and other Adult Swim gems. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hehe.gif

Anyone know of any outstanding AMVs out there? Has anyone here tried their hand at them? I have, and it turned out a bit spiffy for a first effort with the lowly Windows Movie Maker, even if I do say so myself. ... Except for the last third which is utter, utter, dissolution of focus.

Oh and, yeah, 2 posts! Count 'em, 2wo! How many of you can claim to double their no. of posts in a single day? style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif My struggle for a permanent identity will be the putrefaction of what remains after the death of me.

Hi RM, and to all y'all who are keeping da good anime tradition alive on dis 'ere SW board, thanks for the welcome. (And just Grim is fine. Grim is eternal style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif )

Now, I can direct those who are interested to one of the largest collection of AMVs on the 'net (from there the dedicated can find just about anythin' anyway). Searchin' for the good stuff is up to you. Don't be blamin' my self if ya d/l a 50Mb file and find it... lackin'. Though generally, if you find a show you like, or a song, or both together, you'll get somethin' out of it.

Havin' said that, I'll also pass on the locale of those two I found so refreshin'.

... But first: Excel Saga, or Cowboy Bepop? I be wantsin' to start collectin' another series, and these are the two currently released in my sadly... culturally deprived corner of da world that I've taken an interest in. I have to admit though, I be leanin' towards CB (thanks in no small part to Vicbond's amazin' video I be linkin' to), followed by Excel Saga (trippy trailer), and then Oh My Goddess! and Love Hina, which are more or less afterthoughts, but I threw dem in anyways.

Der links: AMV (http://www.animemusicvideos.org/home/home.php) - This is the motherload. Too much here to ever d/l, and growing constantly.

Bepop. Cowboy Bepop. (http://vicbond007.kaytwo.com/videos.html) - The AMV in question is at the bottom of the page. If you d/l any of his vids, make it this one. Though there's sure to be some fine others in there, I passed them by for richer plunders... When you have limited space and d/l, it pays to be picky.

Shellshock (http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members/members_videoinfo.php?v=8101) - What Vicbond did for me visually this song achieves through pure sonic honey. It's metal, it's almost theatrical in it's execution, but above all it's something a bit different, and I can't stop raving about how much I love it. Piecing together almost 6 minutes of Mobile Suit Gundam The 08th MS Team and making it hold its own was no small feat on rubyeye's part. Another tremendous talent I'll be exploring further, and keeping an eye on.

And now for some really good news. I have four letters for you. A. D. S. L. Looking to get it hooked up Monday. With that, and another, say, 80Gb of space to gorge, I am looking to be one AMV happy chappy. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif Furthermore, I'll be able to have a connection 24/7, so maybe I can even get MY humble AMVs out there. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif ... Now if only I wasn't using a desktop fan to cool my PC...

\A hyperactive dark-brown-haired girl in a floral print t-shirt and pink shorts dangles precariously from it, wildly swinging a blue lightsaber around.\

Ami: *Sways back and forth, one hand outstretched, thumb and pinkie extended.* Blue is back!!! Tell a friend!!! *Eyes widen as Blue slices through the chain on which the chandelier is suspended with her lightsaber.*

\It begins to plummet towards Ami, she darts out of the way as the chandelier crashes to the floor, glomping onto White with a frightened expression. Blue tumbles from the broken chandelier, shakes her head and looks around with a wide, psychotic grin.\

Blue: HIYOS!!! Mesa ba~ck!!!

is there anyone present that is really, really selective with their anime? especially in terms of quality of animation? it amazes me to see how many people seem to just love anime indiscriminantly. i can't even tolorate most anime series. series'. series-es. whatever is plural for series. though i do like cowboy bebop, usually, and i like the original shorts for aeon flux (is that considered anime?) and lupin III is entertaining. i just ordered dragon-half. has anyone seen it? it's the most hilarious piece of work in existence. i'm totally befuddled as to why there are only two episodes. i also like tank police, but partially out of nostalgia.

uh. anyway. i was wondering if anyone could recommend some quality anime with spectacular animation. (both versions of vampire hunter D are crap in my book)

my favorites include(but are not limited to): ghost in the shell, the wings of honeamise (sp?!?), roujin z, and spirited away.

Grim Savannah Furre
02-28-2003, 08:37 PM
RM: Great, I'll definitely grab it then!

yoda: I would say I am selective, there are many animes I just never felt anything towards to make me keep watching, or others I could watch through once (even with anticipation) but not a second time through (DBZ anyone?). Anime is like any other medium - there's some great shows and some less great shows and then there's the unmentionables, but living as I do so far from the home of anime I'm thinking the anime on the shelves has been deemed the good stuff. Even so I'm careful to have at least some passing comment on the series I want to investigate. I'm even pickier when it comes to Manga.

Recommendations? Ummm... Well, if you liked WoH (as much as I did ^^) then you might also like Porco Rosso. That's all I dare venture.

Rob

I recommended a ton of titles back on the first few pages of this thread.

As far as animation goes, and quality of it, it still depends on what TYPE you like. I can find quality animation all day long, but never really find something that I like. You also have to look at the release date of the item, and whether or not it was a TV series or an OVA either. Most of the time OVAs have larger budgets than the TV series, and are able to spend more budget funding on animation.

Can't miss recommendations that should be viewed in their original language with Japanese subtitles (that dubbed crap is horrible):

Legend: OVA = Original Video Animation | TV series = full television series, not edited | BL = available in bootleg format (recommend SunDevilDVD.com) | FS = available in fansub only | US = available in the States

* Appleseed - OVA, US
* Gunbuster - OVA, BL, US
* Evangelion - TV series - BL, US
* Rahxephon - TV series - FS, US
* Macross (not robotech) - TV series - BL, US (as Robotech, purchase as Robotech Macross Saga)
* Macross Plus - OVA - US
* Macross 2 - OVA - US
* Macross 7 - TV series (this one is on my 'get' list) - BL
* Macross Zero - OVA (First episode is out in Japan) - FS
* Gundam 0079 - While animation is poor, this pretty much started the Giant Robot Genre - TV Series, BL, US
* Gundam 0080 - OVA, FS, BL, US
* Gundam 0083 - OVA, FS, BL, US
* Zeta Gundam (best) - TV Series - FS, BL, US in late 2003
* ZZ Gundam - TV Series - BL
* Gundam - Char's Counterattack - Movie - BL, US
* Victory Gundam - BL
* Gundam Seed - TV Series - FS
* Orguss II - OVA
* Noir - TV series - FS, BL, US
* Green Legend RAN - OVA, US
* Black Magic: M-66 - OVA, US
* Akira - Movie, US
* Harmagedon - OVA, US
* Moldiver - OVA
* Patlabor - TV Series, OVA, BL, US
* Plastic Little - OVA, US
* Sol Bianca - OVA, US
* Vampire Princess Miyu - TV series, US
* Wicked City - OVA, US
* Blue Submarine No. 6 - OVA, US
* Dan Cougar - OVA, US
* Battle Angel - OVA, US
* Princess Mononoke - OVA, US
* X - TV Series, OVA, BL, US
* Gravion - TV Series, OVA
* Wolf's Rain - TV Series, FS
* Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex - TV Series, FS

I could go on and on, but those are all solid recommendations from me.

and has anyone seen darkside blues? i've seen a preview for it and the animation looks excellent.

Well, me... I don't get to see a lot of anime. Where I am, all we get is mediocre, kiddy animes like Pokemon, Digimon, DBZ (*gags*) and Medabot.

I'd love to see an anime with an actual, decent plot down here sometime. Digimon was the closest you could get to that. Opposed to some kid with his oversized yellow pika rat and dorky sidekicks, picking fights and going around yelling 'I wanna be the world's greatest Pokemon Master', and a TFSG (They Fought Some Guy) anime like DBZ, Digimon had quite a bit more to it.

And don't even get me started on the art. -__-

So basically, with my meagre knowledge of anime, I can't really say much as to reccomendations. I can give you names of some animes I've seen stuff on online that have pretty good art, but it's not really worth it without knowing what kind of themes and storylines you go for. Some people love comedy, some don't, some love action, some can't stand it. And good art doesn't always mean good story. And vice versa.

BYoda, Furre, I'm not as picky as you two when it comes to anime. I'm actually picky when it comes to story. The animation can suck, but if it has the absolute best plot I'll watch it. Maybe that's why I like Outlaw Star...

with anime, the animation/art is the most important aspect for me, otherwise i wouldn't be as interested in the genre of anime... i can find good stories in films of all kinds, and books. but i do find that if anime is aesthetically pleasing, it usually has quality in every department, including story.

So basically you're looking for anime made on a Disney budget?

Good lucking finding that. Even the EVA series got short changed towards the end. You will be hard pressed to find an anime TV series that offers anime on scale with the big budget Disney films.

At least the anime is original though. Disney has only made a handful of original animated films. Take a look at what they ripped off:

* The Lion King was a rip-off of Kimba the White Lion, a very popular 60's anime show
* Aladdin? A rip off a fairy tale
* Snow White - A rip off of a fairy tale
* Tarzan - Rip off
* Cinderella - Rip off of a fairy tale
* Sleeping Beauty - Rip off of a fairy tale
* Beauty and the Beast - Rip off
* The Little Mermaid - Rip off
* Peter Pan - Rip off
* Tom Thumb & Thumbelina - Rip off
* Pinocchio - Rip off
* Song of the South - (it does have animation) - rip off
* Alice in Wonderland - rip off
* Robin Hood - rip off
* The Sword in the Stone - rip off of T.H. White's "Once and Future King"
* The Jungle Book - rip off of Kipling
* The Jungle Book II - continue to rip off of Kipling
* Winnie the Pooh - rip off of A.A. Milne's work (read about it at http://www.tribute.ca/kids/0698/winnie_the_pooh.html)

So, Disney sacrifices originality for animation. No wonder they have so much cash to let the animation flow, they don't spend s h i t on story development. There are a few Disney films that I absolutely enjoy: the original Jungle Book, 101 Dalmations, and Robin Hood. I don't like the newer ones, and I don't like the older ones. Robin Hood and the Jungle Book feature most of the same cast members, and similar animated characters (Little John is Baloo the Bear). All that Disney actually manages to do is make big bucks off of other people's original ideas and fail to make sure that the royalties are paid to the proper parties. The ****ing murdered TH White with their rendition of The Sword in the Stone, and they never even once mentioned Osamu Tezuka when the Lion King comes in to play.

Sorry if I jumped the gun on this one, but Disney isn't exactly my cup of tea. Sure they have great animation, sure they have big bucks, but one thing they don't have is originality. At least the animators in Japan think of interesting stories and try to deliver them. I'm not a fan of blabbering lips either, but I do like good animation, but I love the story as well. What good is a good film if there's no story to it? It's like a prequel-related thing, what good are all these special effects that George Lucas keeps shooting out if the story is s h i t?

In addition, most of the blabbering mouth animes are those ****ass ****ing kiddy animes like Pokemon, Dragonball, Yugioh, and their likenesses. Those shows, or cartoons (they're not worthy of being called 'anime'), are total crap, and they're showing them because the kids of today are stupid enough to buy into cheap ass animation because of the fact that during the 90's American animation went by the wayside. Take a look at the animation of the 90's and the only items that are worth a salt are the Warner Brothers cartoons such as Batman, Superman, and the Animaniacs. The rest of the cartoons that were hitting the airwaves were total crap. There was better animation in the mid 80's with shows such as Voltron (both versions), the Transformers, GI Joe, and even the Amazing Spider-Man. Marvel's attempts in the 90's failed as well, when they screwed up the X-Men series so bad. (I'm rambling now).

Take a look at the Cartoon Network. The old Tom and Jerry cartoons are animated much better than any of the kiddy anime/cartoon shows that make the Toonami hour (Gundam, Tenchi, Justice League, and a few others withstanding). There's shows like Dexter's Laboratory, the Powerpuff Girls, and Samurai Jack that are total crap (let's hope that those guys don't **** up the Episode II series, but you know they will), and as long as they continue to feed this **** out to the masses they'll continue to give anime a bad rap. It's BS.

Those shows that come across as anime (I know they are, but they're still ****) get the genre a bad rap, and when more and more people start thinking that it's 'cool' the studios will produce more. Take anime as a whole (100%), just like everything else you have the bad (90%), and the good (10%). Not every Japanese animated series will be right for everyone, but there are a good deal that definitely need to be watched. They are meant to be comical, serious, and dramatic. They are meant to be an escape. It's all supposed to be fun.

Here's something to think about:

Do you read a book to look at the type on the page, or to read the story?
Do you watch a TV show to look at the background images, or to view the story?
Do you watch a movie to check out the cool effects, or to view the story?
Do you watch anime to check out the animation, or to check out the story?

Here's my answers:

1. Story
2. Story
3. Story
4. Story

i'm not looking for anime with disney budgets as i already know that they don't exist. also, disney films are adaptations of fairytales and old stories. there's a difference between a rip-off and a fairytale. and don't get me wrong, story is always important. but, as far as television is concerned, i don't really watch it. films, story is important, but cinematography is equally important. for books, of course i don't focus on the lettering, but equal to the importance of the story is the wording, the prose, whatever. with animation, the art and animation is equally as important as the story. the story is only one aspect, not the end all be all of film and literature. in fact, one of my favorite films is 'baraka' which has no story. it's pure cinematography from around the world accompanied by music. there is an underlying theme, but no story. and honestly, with film and animation, the most important thing to me is the feeling i get with the visuals and music and general atmosphere. i don't watch bladerunner for the story as the books is much, much better in that regard, but i do watch the film often because of the overwhelming sense of atmosphere it imparts. ghost in the shell is one of my favorite anime films, but there isn't much story- the plot mostly exists for philosophical discourse.. and to present brilliant visuals. additionally, i feel the story for both star wars prequels is excellent... it's the acting and bits of the script that are deficient. actually, even the visualls are somewhat deficient in areas, and that's actually what bothers me most about the prequels. the poor acting and dialogue are sort of a given for star wars. uh. so. that's enough out of me. shutting up.

Yes there is a difference, but not when Disney is concerned. They attempt to sell everything as their own work. Disney wouldn't exist if it weren't for their unoriginality.

BTW - Mononoke and Akira are probably the two films with the largest budget.

Char's Counterattack had a huge budget too, and the animation for that in 1988 is still far superior than most of the animation today.

Check out Rahxephon - great visuals, great animation, and great story.

disney films are trite and formulaic, but they're usually quite good anyhow. except for treasure planet. that was awful. i couldn't take it. i don't recall ever actually disliking a disney animated film before.

well. maybe since spirted away was supposedly the largest grossing film in japanese history, perhaps anime films will start getting more generous funding.

Since the topic has been touched upon, what other anime's are going live-action? I know there's a Dragonball flick in the works, and I've heard rumours of literally a dozen more, including Outlaw Star, Ghost In The Shell, and Akira. Though even the number of animes going Hollywood pales in comparison to the flood of computer game titles making the leap.

What are people's thoughts on these transitions?

As much as I'd like to see a live action flick based on anime the idea worries me.

The live action version of Fist of the North Star absolutely sucked! And none of the Guyver movies have done very well. The trouble usually is they stray too far from the original story.

If they kept close to the story of the Guyver it might not have been so bad, at least the suit looked pretty kewl in those movies.

Streetfighter is another example, the anime version rocked, the live action sucked, if they'd kept to the plot of the anime version the film version might have been a bit better. A better cast would have worked too!</span></span>

I'm not sure about live action films based on anime... it'd be interesting to see, but like said, more often than not the directors lose the plot, cast badly, and it ends up as no more than a crappy, utterly westernised third-rate film people are too ashamed of to even mention and that gets pushed onto video before you can even blink.

As for the whole Disney-Anime debate (or should I refer to it as a cursing spree?), I don't even compare the two. Yes, Disney isn't half as good as anime in the plotline - I agree that they aren't the most orininal, creative lot 99% of the time, but they manage to make most of their works tolerable - but the art is completely different in style, and also in content. And they focus their work entirely on family orientated works, whereas Anime more or less has specific slots - crappy kiddy anime, general all-round anime that anyone can watch, more adult anime, shoujo anime...

And dare I mention anything about Disney's most recent collaboration with Squaresoft. Kingdom Hearts seems utterly ridiculous at first glance, what with sticking angsty Final Fantasy-esque characters together with Donald Duck and Goofy and sending them off through Never Never Land and such places. But it somehow works. Maybe that's just because the uber genki childish-ness and fixed good-evil dispositions of the game is balanced out by Square's usual darker, more angsty characters and the fact that none of their characters are strictly good or evil, but as in reality, stuck in between (that or you just don't notice it all as much past all the flashy spells and explosions).

Disney and Anime are different enough to create a visible contrast, and if put together in the right way they can create some sort of balance that makes it at least somewhat tolerable. I personally hated the idea of sticking anime-type characters with Disney ones, but in the case stated above I actually came to make peace with it, and found it's not such a bad thing.

And I think that's all I have to say on all of that...

By the way, avatar and sig update!!! ^^ Yay me!!!

Disney is Satan to me. They go back to the bigoted idea that cartoons are for kids, so you have to draw the wacky characters. Also, they either copy old stories or recycle their "original" ideas. It's just pain bad.

Outlaw Star - eh.
Ghost in the Shell - eh.
Akira - no way.

Gundam had G Savior - it was horrible due to lack of effects and budget problems.

I think they were going to do a live action eva at one time or another, and they even included live action in the End of Evangelion movie. It looked like complete ****.

Dragonball Z as a live action movie? It was never any good as an anime.

Basically any of the giant robot films would be crap because they don't have a WETA or an ILM to do the effects. They might be fantastic with animation, but when it comes to digital effects and other such items WETA and ILM take tops.

Lupin would work, but would ultimately wind up looking like a Jackie Chan flick (unfortunate).

I just got this month's issue of New Age Gaming, and to my great joy I discovered they've extended the 100% Otaku section to two pages!!! ^-^ This month they were reviewing Ruouni Kenshin, and I have to say I like the sound of it. A Japanese historical piece featuring much sword fighting. Pity we can't get a hold of any good stuff like that here in backwater SA. -__-

I also discovered Black Blade (www.blackblade.za.net), a South African anime site that looks quite promising. ^^ I think I'm going to check that out right now...

As it stands, I'm not a hard core anime fan. I'm more SW than anime. That's why I post on a Star Wars message board a lot more than the one at JAnimeS. Still, I love anime. My point is that I'm not an encyclopedia of anime series and stuff. I wish I was.

:sarcasm: For kids below three, White? Kids infatuated with beasts like Barney and those horrible things thay say 'eh oh' 99% of the time? *Knocks on his head right back.* Baka!!! Kids that age can't even decently appreciate Disney cartoons, let alone japanimations!!!

I checked up on Black Blade. Not much, really... But they're having a con right near where I live on the 26th of April. Resin statues, t-shirts, action figures etc. on sale, lots of competitions and raffles, including a cosplay contest; which if you enter, you only have to pay R10 entrance fee instead of R15. Sadly, I can't go cosplay. ;__; I don't have a costume ready... if they would just wait until later this year when I get Tetei done!!! >.< Ah well, I'm sure there'll be another one later... I hope...

I HATE BARNEY!

BTW, Ami, not for kids under three. Have even seen how Japanese boys and girls really act? I saw this video of two boys in the bathroom singing a pop song. They act exactly like the kids and little monster creatures in the cartoon.

Yes. Anime.

And just FYI; it was Care-Bear's fault. She started the whole thing with the kiddy crap they try to pass as anime. *Thwaps Blue with Tot's umbrella.* No more mention of ANY of that on this thread!!! It's blasphemous!!! *Looks at chibi Tot.* Right Toto-chan?

*Ponders over a good anime topic starter.*

Anyone here written any anime fanfiction or drawn any fanart? Or have original manga-type stories or art? Have a fan site? Know any good fan sites, or ones with fiction and art??

Careful now. We've already offended the Americans with all our Bush-whacking. Next thing you know we'll be kicked off the board, and we wouldn't want that.

I mean, who'd be left to terrorize White? XD *Glomp.*

I'm about to start on another, easier cosplay outfit project while I wait for winter clothes to start showing up in the shops. I may even have it finished by the 26th so I can wear it at the Black Blade convention. ^(^-^)^ Go me!!! ^^;;; This one's Tsuzuki from Yami no Matsuei. Basically a black suit with a black waistcoat and tie and black shoes, and a white button-up shirt. My only problem comes in with the hair. A few years ago I'd still have managed, but now... *Looks at mid-back length tresses and sweatdrops.* Ah well, I'll figure something out...

Better start saving up my money for resin statues and t-shirts, too. ^^ Finally some merchandise I don't have to get sent to me from Austria... Anyone here have any merchandise of their own? Statues, action figures, wallscrolls, manga, DVDs...??

Anyway, that's it from me for now, until I have something else of vague interest to say...

Who, me? Pffft... please. -.- Kind of sad to say, but you're about the only guy I really know at present. I go to an all girl's school, remember? Don't exactly get to socialise much with males...

Though, I don't complain. I'm not exactly desperately seeking male company. I'm having fun just being single. ^^ Not that I have no interest whatsoever in guys, don't get me wrong... if the right one happens along at some point, well fine. But I'm not going to go running after men.

Same situation goes for Blue. Well, pretty much, at least; I think she knows about twice as many guys as I do (which is not a hard thing to achieve ~.~). And she has a crush on this one guy... but he's going to homecoming with her arch nemesis. *Pats Blue.* Happens to us all, it does... You'll get him yet, girl!!!

Yep. I know the feeling. -__- Alas, I'm only getting fresh meat somewhen after my birthday... *Wants more Seimaden.* I want to see Karoun, damnit!!! /_\ *Is somehow developing a fetish for that boy.* She'll likely also send me more Fake. Or more Angel Sanctuary. Who knows... I don't mind either way. XD Though I am leaning more towards an AS preference...

Damned whitehaired bishies. XP
Ah well, what can you do...

I'm going to have a look around at the Black Blade convention, too. Maybe they'll have some manga of worth there. Then I won't have to suffer for about another two months after that... And then I'll have it in english, so I'll have no problems with understanding the German!!! Which I really have to learn... before going to Austria in December... >.>;;;

*Pokes Blue.* You're coming with me to Black Blade, are you not??? Or I'll just have to drag you there by your earlobes!!! XD And why have you STILL not phoned me?! >.<

WTF - Why are you guys discussing Barney in the anime thread? /kick morons

Anyway. New recommended features/series to look out for:

Kiddy Grade - Female galactic cops of sorts, esp and something else - entertaining with good animation
Gunparade March - Post alien invasion freedom fighting using mecha and other items (rather good, on third episode now)
Great Teacher Onizuka - Live Action Series - This series simply kicks ass. Each episode pits the Onizuka in a different predicament. Predictable plot, but damned good fun.
Wolf's Rain - Turning out the be prettying f'n good. Fantastic animation

Once again for those of you with a decent connection, you should definitely use bittorrent. Bit Torrent is a P2P program that uploads pieces of the file that you are downloading, while you are downloading. Depending on the amount of users that are currently downloading the file you will have higher/lower speeds. Usually the more who are downloading, the higher your download rate. Instead of downloading the file's data in order, it downloads the data in bits and reassembles it. It's basically kicking major ass in the Fan Sub network.

Program and info:http://bitconjurer.org/BitTorrent/download.html

I'd like to come to the convention, yes. When exactly is it? 26th March or April?

And I CAN'T phone you! Believe me, if I could, I would. Our phone is dead and if you had any though to actually phone ME for once you'd KNOW this. And it's STAYING dead 'til Thursday.

No new anime syndrome? You've got to be kidding me? There are close to 100 titles being fansubbed now, and most of the quality is just plain outstanding.

Rahxephon is now on DVD, Noir is now on DVD, and there are tons of other items out on DVD. Don't rely on Blockbuster and Cartoon Network for all your anime needs, that's just silly. With the amount of anime that is currently available to anyone, it is hard to believe that you have reached the end of the road.

There's enough out there now to keep me busy for years. Look around, experiment, and for christ's sake, stop watching that trash they play on Cartoon Network.
