It's snowing like crazy here today, but as it was pretty warm yesterday with plenty of rain showers, the ground is too wet for the snow to stay on.
Well, what have you guys been up to this weekend? I've got a pretty bad cold (no wonder, considering the weather style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue2.gif ) so I've been mostly at home...

I'm a lot better, thanks Tresk! I'm still hoarse and the nose is stopped-up, but the fever is gone today. It's the climate, +10°C one day and -3°C the next...
The snowing has resumed here in the Greater Stockholm area...

Glad to hear that, you're welcome. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif Hope it clears up soon, that phase can be a nuisance, but at least you know it's on its way out... That must be tiresome. Vancouver weather can be like that at times, too...
Our snow is still around, but it's turning to slush, not all that cold yet really. But there's more in the forecast for later of the week...

I usually like the snow. I live in a wooded area so it's very pretty with the snow hanging from the trees. What I don't like is the weather conditions that comes with it (I'm still sick, it turned out to be the flu, not an ordinary cold).

Yeah, our snow's almost all gone now. Whoa...I don't know how I'd manage with that day length, here the earliest it gets dark is a little after 4 PM. Same here, I wouldn't want to spend a winter in Whitehorse, Iqaluit or Yellowknife. Mind you, a polar summer might be kind of nice, although I imagine it would be disruptive to one's sleep at first...

Hmm... I think it's time for another (short) episode of Lord Senes' Drinking Tips...
Quote: Alcohol, the cause and solution to all the problems in my life.
Irish Coffee is good if one has a cold. The caffeine also cheers you up. Have a couple of those, and you feel better already. In fact, you could feel so good that you decide to skip work tomorrow and drink the whole bottle... After all, what's the best medication for a cold...? Rest. Trust me, a bottle of whiskey WILL help you with that. Some side effects may occur though, like vomiting, headache, mouth being dry etc... But hey, that'll make you think about something else than your cold...

It's good to see you Tresk!
I'm in a bit of a hurry, so I'll be very brief about the current Swedish neutrality policy (please excuse my grammar as I'm a bit rushed). Things have changed somewhat over the last decade. There are no potential enemies and Sweden hasn't had any for quite sometime (*cough* except for the Soviet Union during the Cold War *cough*). Sweden at first didn't join the European Union (or the European Community as it was called at the time) because of the neutrality policy. Sweden's current policy is to stay nonaligned, but to participate in the security field (in organizations such as OSCE, according to the December 1995 declaration). Sweden's neutrality is temporary, that is it isn't a law and can be set aside at an instant as opposed to permanent neutrality (Switzerland is a prime example of a permanent neutral country).
As for Sweden being armed... Sweden's armed forces during World War II and the Cold War was very much focused on invasion defense but the policy as changed towards contingency defense (with a much smaller organization with fewer conscripts and thus fewer military units).
If there's more you'd like to know or want me to clarify, just let me know! This was very brief as I'm in a hurry.

Ah, thank you very much. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif That's pretty close to my understanding... Quite some time meaning post-WWII? Because I do seem to recall that the Third Reich was also considered a very real threat by Swedish defence planners in the 1940s... And I think the temporary neutrality is preferable to what you've described for Switzerland, better to have more manoeuvring room just in case.
Although on the downside, I would assume that relying almost exclusively (until recently at least) on indigenous equipment would tend to send costs through the roof. (Then again, the money doesn't leave the country...)
Thanks. The reason I was asking is that I sometimes wonder if Canada ought to maybe adopt a more "neutral" stance (i.e. less interventionist, even under UN auspices), at least to some degree, but at the same time retain a credible defensive capability to patrol our own borders for sovereignty's sake... So Sweden and Japan are naturally the two models I tend to think of for that. Although of course Japan is not strictly speaking neutral, but is limited to self-defence only by the Peace Constitution...

Yes, as you might know, neutral Sweden allowed Germany to transport unarmed troops through Swedish territory after the German campaign in Norway had ended (Norway surrendered on June 7th 1940 and the Swedish cabinet declared June 9th that they would allow the transport and the agreement was signed the following month, in clear violation with the neutral stance. In addition to this agreement, that was in effect up until 1943, Sweden continued to trade with Germany and supplied Germany with vital iron ore). It's important to note that Sweden traded with the allies as well and made very serious concessions.
As for Germany, it was a real threat. In early 1943, the Germans had a finished plan for the invasion of Sweden but the setbacks on the Eastern front forced Hitler to cancel the invasion at the last minute (the name for the planned operation has escaped me for the moment, how annoying...).
During the Cold War, it was perceived that the potential threat came from the east (which is rather unsurprising).
And yes, temporary neutrality is better as you've better be prepared for any contingency...

Sweden had an extensive armament production during WWII with many companies involved. We had Scania-Vabis and Volvo that manufactured armoured vehicles, Bofors that manufactured guns and artillery and we had (and still have) plenty of iron... Sweden's armed forces were quite impressive by 1943. Sweden's Royal Armed Forces was comprised of 600,000 men, not including the civilians in the home guard and auxiliary units, it had 252 tanks (which had increased to 766 by 1945) and the Air Force (which only had 33 Gloster Gladiator biplane fighters which had quickly become outmoded and a few medium bombers) had developed new fighters (among others SAAB J 21 which was among the first aircrafts in the world with an ejection seat).
Of course, after WWII, it opened up and Sweden bought equipment from abroad (for example, the main battle tank in Sweden in the decades following WWII was the British Centurion tank).

Yes, I had my mind made up and I voted. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif My candidate didn't win locally, but I think it worked out pretty well. IMO there's something to be said for minority governments... It'll be interesting to see where we go from here.

Ah, I don't think I'd heard of the troop movements but I was aware that Sweden had traded with both Germany and the Allies during the war. (As you probably recall, the reason a few DeHavilland Mosquitoes were converted to "airliner" configuration and placed in BOAC service was to get diplomats into, and out of, Sweden to negotiate the purchase of ball bearings to prevent the Germans from buying them).
And one of the first indications British naval intelligence got that the Bismarck and Prinz Eugen had sortied was a sighting report from HMS Gotland that was passed on to the British Naval Attache in Stockholm.

Ah, I don't think I was aware that there had been a full invasion plan, but I do recall that the threat of one was taken very seriously by Swedish planners from an article on the J-21 in Wings of Fame magazine.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>During the Cold War, it was perceived that the potential threat came from the east (which is rather unsurprising).
Definitely... Also Bofors-designed guns were widely used by the British during the war, especially AA mountings on Royal Navy surface ships, although of course I'm fairly certain they were license-built in Britain (probably by Vickers, if I'm not mistaken...)
Also weren't there a few Seversky P-35s (I'm afraid I forget the model number of the export version, but it was much the same thing) that entered Flygvapnet service between the Gladiator and the J-22 and J-21?
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>Of course, after WWII, it opened up and Sweden bought equipment from abroad (for example, the main battle tank in Sweden in the decades following WWII was the British Centurion tank).
Ah, yes. I'm not sure if I'd heard of the Centurion being in Swedish service before the S-Tank, but I think that rings a bell. Certainly makes sense... I'm afraid this may be one instance of my interest in aircraft and ships but not so much land vehicles or armaments blinkering me a bit to tend to think mostly in air force and/or naval terms. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif

Yes, I follow things as well.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>Yes, as you might know, neutral Sweden allowed Germany to transport unarmed troops through Swedish territory after the German campaign in Norway had ended (Norway surrendered on June 7th 1940 and the Swedish cabinet declared June 9th that they would allow the transport and the agreement was signed the following month, in clear violation with the neutral stance. In addition to this agreement, that was in effect up until 1943, Sweden continued to trade with Germany and supplied Germany with vital iron ore). It's important to note that Sweden traded with the allies as well and made very serious concessions.
(As you probably recall, the reason a few DeHavilland Mosquitoes were converted to "airliner" configuration and placed in BOAC service was to get diplomats into, and out of, Sweden to negotiate the purchase of ball bearings to prevent the Germans from buying them).
Yes, that's true.
About the troop transits, about 250,000 German soldiers (and goods) were transported through Swedish territory by railway between June 1940 and August 1943. Sweden also allowed the German division Engelbrecht to be transported through Swedish territory from Norway to Finland in order for it to participate in the fighting on the Eastern front soon after Operation Barbarossa had been initiated.
In addition to the troops and goods, heavy German weapons were also transported over Swedish territory such as two "Schwere Bruno" (heavy 28 cm railway guns).
It's important to remember that the military outlook was gloomy. In 1940, the Supreme Commander of the Swedish Armed Forces estimated that Sweden might have resisted the German army for about 2 weeks.

And one of the first indications British naval intelligence got that the Bismarck and Prinz Eugen had sortied was a sighting report from HMS Gotland that was passed on to the British Naval Attache in Stockholm.
Yes, that's true.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>As for Germany, it was a real threat. Ah, I don't think I was aware that there had been a full invasion plan, but I do recall that the threat of one was taken very seriously by Swedish planners from an article on the J-21 in Wings of Fame magazine.
The name of the planned operation was Operation Polarfuchs (=Operation Polar Fox, not to be confused with Operation Arctic Fox which was part of Operation Silver Fox) which was to be set in motion July 1st 1943. The plan involved a German assault from Trondheim, Norway and from forces stationed in Finland with the aim of cutting the country in two and the establishment of a major airbase outside the northern city of Östersund. Sweden was to be divided between Germany and Finland. Fortunately, the operation was cancelled.

In May 1939, Flygvapnet placed an order of fifteen P-35s (the Swedish designation was Seversky EP-1 Model 106 and the Flygvapen designation was J 9) and six months later, an additional batch of 45 planes were ordered followed by an order of 60 planes in January 1940. In total, 60 planes were imported to Sweden by various means before the U.S. imposed a weapon embargo on all countries except for the U.K. (before the lend-lease to the Soviet Union that is).

Magnus, my reply to your off-topic question in the Fleet Geek thread got a bit unwieldy, so I'll post it here: ;)
^This is a bit off-topic, but when did you "discover" SW?
No worries. :) Difficult to pin down one date...I saw most of ESB on video back in the late 80s as a small child, but I had trouble following it not having seen ANH and therefore being a little disoriented and I left shortly before Bespin because it was getting too scary for me. ;) Then in 1996 my interest in SF spacecraft spilled over from ST to SW and I bought a copy of the original Essential Guide to Vehicles and Vessels and the bits of plot spoiler in there really captured my imagination, along with the vehicles and vessels themselves, so I personally count that as my introduction to Star Wars fandom. However, that was about the extent of it until I saw TPM in the theatre in 1999, but even then it didn't really take off at that time. It was December 2001 when I finally got around to watching the OT on VHS that I really became a Star Wars fan, I went through the trilogy on successive nights and then watched it again and within the week I was reading Splinter of the Mind's Eye. ;) I was on the mend from a breakup and Star Wars was just what I needed. Haven't looked back. :p

So when will it stop snowing and spring really start?
Having only experienced 3 month long mild winters each year, it's hard to imagine anything else.

Usually when April hits it's safe to say the snow is gone, my area usually averages about 5 months of winter

Well, here in my parts of Sweden we would've had early spring by now (i.e. virtually no snow but rather chilly, 3-8°C), so the spring is rather late here.

It's a bit warmer today (2°C), but it's still colder than usual (it's usually between 10°-12° C). I live on the edge of one of the bigger Swedish cities, and usually this time of the year, I take walks in the rural areas adjacent to where I live (the forests streches for kilometers and there are farms and stuff), it's very pretty, but this year it has been too cold and too much snow. :(

We have a comfortable 6°C. However, while we were one decimeter short of a half-meter of snow, there is water and mud everywhere as the snow melts away rapidly (in fact, after only a few days with these temperatures, there isn't very much left).
