Nah, it wasn't such a big deal to add saber effects to still photos back then, they just airbrushed 'em in. Don't you remember all those classic 1970's wall posters of Darth Vader brandishing with a very softly-glowing airbrushed saber blade and airbrushed fog and smoke swirling around him? I remember one of those images was even printed on the back cover of the 1977 "Star Wars Storybook".
