That's probably the film I most look forward to seeing out of the summer offerings. It has indeed been a good series, it doesn't pretend to be too clever or something that it isn't. Transformers (a return to childhood) and Simpsons (for the humour) not being far behind it.

I'm honestly surprised that Shoot Em Up did as poorly as it did. Figured that a movie that can be summed up as Guns, One-Liners, and Rock Music would draw huge amounts of teens and 20-somethings. It's a wonderful movie if you can forget that logic and physics exist

I saw it opening weekend... if you're a fan of the book, go in expecting nothing but a few minor resemblances. It's definitely it's own movie, and I'm actually kind of miffed they used the books title, because it's nothing like the book. "Loosely based" is the key here.

That said, on it's own, it's actually a pretty decent flick. I liked the filming, loved the desolate overgrown Manhattan, thought Will was excellent in the role. The "creatures" are entirely CGI, which I feel hurts some of the scenes honestly as they look like poor video game cutscenes from time to time. But it's not so bad that I felt removed totally... it's just kind of a bummer... real folk would've been better for closeups and whatnot and only CGI for some of the more instense "stunts" they kind of perform.

Overall, it's a B for me... Not phenomenal, but a decent enough movie I wouldn't mind watching again.

Furthermore, I really would STILL like to see a faithful adaptation of the book. Someone's got to make one eventually, right? Other than the Vincent Price one that's nearly impossible to find, lol. Unless you Get it frOm yOur friend Greg, in LakE VIDEO, Illinois. ;)

Very good review and nice points. I read this book and besides the title and the characters name, not much is the same. I don't want to say any spoilers about the book but its a short, easy and great read. If you have never read the book, the movie is different from most action films but has some great parts to it. Will Smith really shines in this film which is different from his previous Big Willy style movies.

7/10

Yes, I recommend to anyone that reads Stephen King... read "I Am Legend". King has said that it is one of the single greatest books that influenced his writing career (not just the book but Matheson's work in general I think)... and you can totally see it.

If you like King, you'll like Matheson... the book is brilliant and Virus is right, it's a pretty quick read... it's actually a novella I think. The copy I own actually has a bunch of other stories as well, "I Am Legend" is like half of it.

Yes, that's right, it's worse than Chipmunks. Why? Chipmunks has Jason Lee and David Cross. Though they both made bad decisions by being in the movie, they are still there and bring some legitimacy to the movie.

I highly suggest (Read: Command) you all to see the movie.
I've gotta see No Country, Sweeney Todd, and There Will Be Blood first, and since its doubtful I'll get to all 3 at the theater, I probably won't be seeing Juno until its on dvd.

Orandhite
01-08-2008, 11:50 AM
I really want to see Sweeney Todd too. What's the story of Juno? I recognise the name (maybe it's just because of a character name from The Descent) but can't remember what it's about...

Also, has anyone seen or heard anything about a movie called "Teeth"? I saw a quick ad for it somewhere and it looked a bit weird and trashy!

kopernikuz
01-08-2008, 11:58 AM
Um.. yeah.. "Teeth"... heard of it... not interested, lol. A girl who has teeth in her "nethers" to castrate men... though I think I read she only uses these powers for good :P

Juno looks pretty funny, but virtually no real marketing that I've noticed... but I hear it's becoming a real sleeper hit. It's got one of the kids from Superbad, which I didn't see... but loved him on "Arrested Development"... unfortunately like Borg, I get to see only a few in the theater, and I usually reserve that time for something a with a bit bigger bang.

I wasn't sure whether it was meant to be a comedy or a serious movie - as a comedy it might be worth a look on bargain Tuesday, but a serious movie? I think I agree with you Kope, not that interesting.

Yeah, I think it is kind of purposefully campy, though I can't say how comical. It's about a pure-minded girl who finds herself with this "gift" after being a victim of male violence, if you know what I mean. Where it goes from there, I couldn't say... though the comments I've read do say it's got a gory yet darkly comic tone. The whole idea just makes me cringe, lol.

Orandhite

With Grindhouse and Death Proof and Rob Zombie movies, it's kind of like that is back "in" though... so who knows. It just doesn't float my boat :)

I'm right now looking forward to Cloverfield. It will be interesting to see if the B.O. reflects positively for all the viral marketing and hype it's gotten. It looks like a pretty good time, and with the PG-13 rating will get me into the theaters quicker than some others because I can take some of the kids, lol.

Orandhite
01-08-2008, 01:09 PM
The only Rob Zombie movie I know that I have seen is The Devil's Rejects, and that was a terrible movie IMO. Which makes me want to see it even less! :D

I really like the look of Cloverfield too - I really hope it isn't just Godzilla 2. :)

kopernikuz
01-08-2008, 01:32 PM
I think it kind of is, though the monster is not Godzilla, it seems to be basically the same concept of Monster eats City. But Abrams is one of the guys behind Lost so maybe there will be some twists... maybe it's the smoke monster come to NYC, lol.

Kapit
01-09-2008, 03:32 AM
Juno was awesome...personally I put it above No Country and There Will Be Blood because Juno is just so much more fast-paced, and to me, more interesting. And besides, after hearing There Will Be Blood is the next Citizen Kane I developed a very terrible opinion of TWBB. I hate Kane with an unbridled passion and think it's vastly overrated in terms of everything.

Anywho, Juno has actually surpassed Little Miss Sunshine in terms of money earned in X amount of time. The marketing hasn't really been huge for it, and it's been relegated mostly to word of mouth and the film blogs of the interwebs. Juno is easily one of the most interesting and original movies of modern times, which is saying quite a bit. The script is fantastic, and the cast pulls it off oh so very well.

Teeth seems pretty interesting and has been getting some great buzz since it premiered at Sundance (I think it was). I'd like to see it solely for the camp factor.

As far as Cloverfield goes, I'm SUPER EXCITED and cannot wait to see the movie. I'm just hoping it's not over-hyped

Oh, and Kope, the only thing Grindhouse proved is that Tarantino and Rodriguez have egos bigger than Jupiter. They figured they could sell that insane concept on their names alone, and it failed miserably, mostly because the fake trailers got the Grindhouse concept more right than the movies did (Though Planet Terror was so much more a Grindhouse flick than Death Proof). Grindhouse, along with Captivity and Hostel II also helped show us that people don't care about the ultra-violent anymore.

I'm embarrassed to say I contributed to the confers of Kung Fu Panda - more like Panda Poodu -

art work is incredibly gorgeous - there's not one other good thing about it except perhaps Angelina's voice. I could hear kids asking when will it be over...and they asked it many, many times.

although - there is a Yoda figure who becomes one with the force, sorta. There is a chosen one, there is a former padawan who turns to the dark side and there is dialogue reflecting "you have brought peace to the valley". But the motivation to become the equivalent of a Jedi Knight? Food....yep.. food. and making better noodles.

repeated endlessly...............Lame-o and boring. Upon exiting I did hear a couple of tykes say "this movie stinks"

The Pink Panther 2
Early Exit Steve Martin reprises his role as the bumbling Inspector Clouseau in this teaser trailer (http://www.sonypictures.com/movies/thepinkpanther2/) that has him breaking into a theater and bursting through the screen. Steve got the idea to film this when he saw all the people bursting through the screens of the terrible first film to get out of the theater.

He's made some really good decisions in the past (American Psycho, Nolan's Batman, The Prestige, 3:10 to Yuma), and I think with Scott and Crowe, Nottingham would be another winner.

What I'm more concerned about (still) is his involvement in the McG directed Terminator 4.

But like JMH was saying, I think any movie would benefit from his presence. Every actor makes mistakes, or ends up in movies that despite best intentions don't turn out great. If Terminator ends up being weak, I don't think it'll be hugely problematic for us as fans/viewers or damaging to his career.

I'm greatly anticipating Nottingham, though, so I hope he accepts. Bale/Crowe part 2 would be great to see.

It might. I remember seeing a trailer in the theater at some point and thinking it looked lame. Just watched the final trailer online, though, and it looks kind of cool. I haven't read any of the graphic novels, but the basic scenario with the main character seems a lot like Paul Valley from Batman (finds out his dad was an assassin after he's killed, then discovers he's meant to succeed him and has his own skills "unlocked").

I don't forsee it even coming close to Titantic numbers. Remember, that finished with $600 million domestically. Let me repeat that...$600 million.
Now I see no reason why it won't crack $400 million, but getting close to Titantic is damned near impossible. Perhaps, just perhaps, if this was released at a slower time of the year for films, it might be able to have legs strong enough to get it close, just like the situation Titantic was in when it set that mark. It was released in the winter, the competition was virtually non-existent, and it ruled.
Unfortunately for TDK, it's in the middle of the summer, and while it will do fantastic, it just can't possibly be front and center viewing for too long.

Jjm3233

^ Right. Plus, remember that the LOTR trilogy were winter releases, as have been a number of the Harry Potter films. In the end, though, I think studios are just so married to the idea of a big summer blockbuster. You usually don't see weekend records being broken and the like with a winter film, and I think studios are in love with those types of headlines. Plus, most films in the top 10 at the end of the year usually are summer films.

True, according to BoxOfficeMojo (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/domestic.htm?page=1&p=.htm) only 4 of the 15 biggest domestic movies were released outside the May-August window. Still, I have often wondered why the Christmas window isn't exploited more.

Yeah, and also, studios probably aren't thinking in terms of breaking Titanic's record. What they want is to make a profit, and WB is certainly doing that with TDK. Do you think they're disappointed in the slightest right now or thinking "man, why didn't we release this in winter?" Of course not. TDK is performing better than they would have dared to hope, so they're thrilled. The placement of the film isn't a problem for them at all.

And I don't think it's a problem for us as viewers/fans, either.

So who do you guys think will win the BO in two weeks...

Tropic Thunder or Clone Wars?

I think Tropic Thunder will be very successful because of it's cast and the draw they sometimes get... but probably Clone Wars will own the weekend because 1) it's Star Wars and has a built in fanbase that's excited for it (though perhaps not in as great a number as the traditional films)... 2) it's also kid-friendly which can double or triple a film's audience if it's a good one.

In our family... the audience difference going to the theater for both films is 2 vs. 8. Two of us would see Tropic Thunder... while all eight of us would see Clone Wars. So in our family alone, it's quadrupled, lol.

I saw an advert for The Clone Wars on British tv last night for the first time. I haven't even heard of the other film! It will be very interesting to see how SW does both here and in the the US. Especially if it is successful, I can see the numbers holding steady after the first week, as it seems that a lot of people may not necessarily go and see it right away.

kopernikuz

They must not be pushing Tropic Thunder in the UK. It looks like it'll be hilarious and stars Ben Stiller, Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr. Ben Stiller plays a successful action star, Jack Black plays a successful comedy star and RDJ plays a critically acclaimed white Australian dramatic actor hired to play a black man... all three have been cast in a war movie being filmed in a dangerous country. They are captured by actual guerillas but still think they're part of the movie being filmed...

RDJ's character alone seems like a hilarious idea...

Oh that thing, saw a trailer in the cinema for that. It was one of those moments when you can hear the crowd quiet and think, what the hell is that rubbish! It got 1 laugh and that was it, so I don't think it will make much of an impact over here. But then again, I have been wrong before!

Personally, I can't stand Jack Black, I think he is the least funny guy I have ever seen. Nacho Libre was arguably the worst film I have ever watched and I now try and avoid anything he does like the plague! So there's no way I'll be going to see that. So I make that Clone Wars 9, Tropic 2.

400 Million in 18 days for THE DARK KNIGHT

The Dark Knight Reaches $400M in Record 18 Days
Source: ShowBIZ Data (http://www.showbizdata.com/dailybox.cfm)
August 5, 2008

Warner Bros. Pictures' juggernaut The Dark Knight (http://www.comingsoon.net/films.php?id=15813) added yet another record on Monday as it passed up the $400 million in just 18 days. The previous record was held by Shrek 2, which needed 43 days to reach the mark, followed by Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, which took 45 days.

The Dark Knight (http://www.comingsoon.net/films.php?id=15813) earned $6.28 million in 4,266 theaters on Monday, pushing the Christopher Nolan-directed Batman Begins follow-up to $400,031,000. The movie has climbed up to the 8th spot on the all-time domestic blockbuster list and will surpass Spider-Man ($403.7 million) on Tuesday for the 7th spot.

Internationally, the film has already earned $202.5 million while it has yet to open in some major markets. The worldwide total so far is $602.5 million.

Judging solely on the ticket sales tonight, Pineapple Express and Traveling Pants 2 will both beat Dark Knight this weekend.

We completely sold out 4 shows of Pineapple, and 3 shows of Pants. Dark Knight, on the other hand, had at most 30 people in a theater.

On a semi-related note, I managed to anger a teenager enough to threaten me with a beating. I caught him trying to sneak his underage girlfriend into Pineapple. I told them that it was time for them to leave, and the guy told me to "F--- off." I then told him he definitely had to leave and that he shouldn't expect a refund. He proceeded to cuss me out because he had bought the tickets. He then threatened to sue us if he didn't get the money back and I responded "You do that."

He told me he was going to beat me, and I said to him, "Just keep talking. I'm sure you'll get your money back now." He and his girlfriend were summarily escorted off the premises without a refund :)

Sometimes I don't mind that the job doesn't pay the greatest because I get to screw with people like that.

Your post brings up a question for me Kapit. Why did PE and SOTTP come out on a Wednesday? Usually you see that with major releases or holiday weekends coming up... is there a holiday coming up this weekend that I'm not aware of?

No I realize it's the money thing, lol.... obviously it's to try to make more money for the "weekend", which isn't actually a weekend, lol. But I'm surprised with these films... not that I think they'd do badly, they've got an audience, but I'm just surprised because they're not that big of a deal, really.

You expect it with Clone Wars or TDK or any of the event films... but a basic comedy and a teen chick flick?

I have a new question for you guys to ponder:

How big do you predict High School Musical 3 will be? I think it's going to explode... I work with youth and this thing is a freaking bizarre phenomenon... but it's kind of cute, it's relatively wholesome... so I don't fight it with my kids... but it's giant with these age groups... multiple repeat viewings giant...

What will happen?

You'd be surprised... and particularly considering how much disposable income these tweens seem to have access to. The first one was supposed to be a minor Disney channel feature and has become a billion dollar industry on its own, lol... So I can't say where it comes from.

Look at Hannah Montana... and this is bigger/wider recepted than even Hannah Montana, so it'll be interesting to see what happens. It's brilliant of Disney to go theatrical with the final one though... the anticipation alone is palpable in the youth communities that I have contact with.

I wonder what God is thinking, about all of this hoopla over a movie, and over all blockbusters. Imagine if all that money was spent on world poverty and hunger. Instead of 2 hours of enjoyment and a face full of popcorn, world poverty could be wiped out if the same people would contribue the same amount of money to helping others. Many people still contribute, and then go to the movies, though. I'm just sayin'.

Actually, Tovor, Americans gave an estimated $306.39 billion (http://www.givingusa.org/press_releases/releases/20080622.html), And doesn't count taxes that goes to social programs. Domestic box office was less than $10 Billion (http://www.mpaa.org/2007-Theatrical-Market-Statistics.pdf). I seriously doubt God has an issue with us spending less than 4% of what we willingly gave in a year, on tickets.

Yeah, plus be serious. What about the billions of dollars spent on other entertainment mediums?
Yeah, poverty, hunger, etc. is horrible, but that's life. If there is a God, I gotta imagine he'd have bigger fish to fry than the entertainment industry for not using their money in a more socially responsible manner.

I was curious to know how many people going to see Z&M actually asked for the movie with the whole title, or just used "Zack and Miri." Somehow, I imagine some Steve Carell-type guy walking up and saying, "Yes, I'd like one ticket to see Zack and Miri MAKE A PORNO!!!!"

Nearly all of the TV spots I saw going into the release dropped the "Make a Porno" part, not to mention if you had no idea what the film was about ahead of time, those same TV spots told you absolutely nothing. A shame, because I was really hoping this would Smith's chance to have a big hit for once.

I don't think it hurt... most of the marketing still had the word if it was during primetime or on most networks. I don't know what channels you watched but I kept seeing it constantly even though this news said it was changing, lol. There were a few times it dropped the word, but for the most part the word was there. Plus, the online advertising changed to reflect the censorship idea and I think that only helped... not hurt the film's opportunity. Censorship tends to bring people out ;)

I don't think the word itself made a huge difference especially since the trailers were pretty suggestive, lol... if anything they needed to mention KSmith more to get that audience. But the ads looked like most Apatow flick ads do to me... and they still get the audience.

Face it... I think people are bored with this concept from KSmith... bring on Red State. :)

From what I've read, I believe that the marketing varied depending on region. I watch the Philly stations, and I'd say about 90% of the ads I saw dropped the "porno" part and those ads turned out to be lame. They truly told you nothing about the film.
Once I figured out that those were the only ads I was seeing, i had a really bad feeling about the box office for this flick.
As for people being bored with the concept, I don't buy that. Smith has never had a huge ticket buying following, and this held true to form. That said, I thought this would be this would be the one. Balls. I still contend that the marketing killed this film's chances.

I think you're just bitter... since when has censorship enhanced marketing every HURT a film's release ;) :P If anything it makes them stronger...

I actually agree that the marketing wasn't ideal... but not because they dropped "porno", I don't think that hurt at all... in fact the buzz probably only helped. The marketing that hurt the film was that very little in the film was appropriate for television, LOL... that and the fact that Kevin Smith is barely mentioned. So yeah, they didn't promote it right perhaps... but the "porno" issue didn't hurt it in my opinion.

Hey, you know what? You're right, I am a little bitter. I've been a fan of Smith's from the very beginning and I was really hoping for him to finally have a big hit. That said, I still contend that it was the marketing that hurt this film above all else. Whether it was dropping "porno" from the tv spots, or not mentioning Smith's name, or not being able to really talk about what the film was about. All of it sucked and made it difficult to be a big success.
Oh well, what can you do? It simply doesn't seem as though he will ever be in the blockbuster business.

Then we agree on the marketing... I just feel the "porno" part got him MORE attention than it did hurt... but yeah they didn't really put much behind this.

For those keeping track, Zack and Miri is up to $26.8M domestic gross. Maybe it'll crack that $30M glass ceiling Smith seems to have. Dogma's still the highest grossing Smith film, at $30.7M.
