style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tie.gif Before I start I just wanna say that the first flight sim I ever played was by LucasArts (though it was non-SW). IT was Battlehawks 1942, released in 1988 (I played it on a 286 LOL which at the time was pretty damn sweet style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif ). Later I played their next flight sim Their Finest Hour: Battle of Britain and then finally Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe (affectionately known as SWOTL).
Anywho, any comments on the flight sims?
The original X-Wing and expansions
TIE Fighter and expansions
X-Wing vs TIE Fighter (XvT) with Balance of Power (BoP)
X-Wing Alliance
Rogue Squadrons 1-3
Starfighter
I don't think I missed any, I like to pride myself on being in the know as far as flight sims go, especially SW related. I don't think much of SW flight sims after X-Wing Alliance though, I consider that in my mind the cut off point of the first generation SW flight sims which in my mind are the best and beat Rogues 2 and 3, and Starfigher hands down. The first Star Wars game I played, PC or otherwise, was X-Wing Collector's CD-Rom (original X-Wing with both expansion tours included). I fell in LOVE! IT was so thrilling. I got quite good at that game. Found out all the neat little glitches in the game (Star Destroyer blind spot...). On the Redemption scenario (if anyone knows what I'm talking about) I learned that to complete it successfully you keep the rest of your flight waiting near the medical frigate while I go out and handle the Dupes (that is, TIE Bombers). I had a nice little surprise when I read in either X-Wing Rogue Squadron book 1 or 2 a scene where Corran was referring to that as a training sim where he learned the trick was to do the OPPOSITE, lol I was amazed Stackpole and I thought along the same lines (but when you think about it, it was really quite obvious that whether it be one or all but one must stay behind) but for a boy of what, 12 or 13 I forget, that was pretty cool. I miss X-Wing. I can't play it anymore due to it being too outdated. I never got a copy of X-Wing95!!!!!! And I can't find any (I don't order from the Lucas store...) to this day style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif Oh well, it probably wouldn't work on XP anyway.
I played some of TIE Fighter, the original diskette version. I don't have a huge opinion on it. It was the first time you could choose different type of projectiles in a SW flight sim, as opposed to "X-Wings Y-Wings and B-Wings have proton torpedoes and A-Wings have concussion missles so deal with it." So I liked that feature. And flying with Vader was nice. The Harkov defection was cool, and Zaarin defecting was even better, you never expected it. The mission where they are trapped was incredable. Bt I didn't like the mission where someone was kidnapping the Emporer. Come on!!!! Ridiculous!!!! Need I explain why? It's Palpatine! You know, Sidious (AND DONT YOU DRE SAY ITS NOT SAVE THAT FOR ANOTHER THREAD... lol style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif ) Also TIE Fighter introduced us to blasting away certain components on ships and stations (X-Wing kinda did, you could blow off ISD's shield generators but that was the extent of it).
I liked XvT, but I liked it more after I got a cable modem lol. People complained about the mediocre single player aspect (until BoP was released) but I didn't mind the SP missions. It was nice to be able to play both sides in one game.
X-Wing: Alliance rekindled my earlier passion I felt when I was playing X-Wing. The story is wonderful. Flying frieghters was wonderful Hauling things was wonderful. Manning the guns while you're on autopilot was awesome (a feature LucasArts included in all flight sims excluding the SW ones until XwA... oh wait that's because the other gmes didn't let you fly anything with actual turrets... oops... I'm dumb). The detail if you could crank it up to the max was incredable. The drama and the action was incredable. There was some pretty interesting stuff to be found. There's one mission where you accidentally jump into a sector full of Victory class. Imperial class and Imperial II class Star Destroyers assembled for some reason I think it was training. Anyway if you're brave enough and fast enough you can ID those ships and find the Chimaera!!!!!! Wave at your buddy Thrawn!!!! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif I love XwA. I love how you can fly non-aligned ships. The Toscan fighter is my favorite non-aligned ship. I love the expanded capitol ships. Can never have too many types of those I always say. Nice to look at. Nice to put a bunch in a SP simulation and watch them slug it out (Dodonna class Assault Frigates own you). Overall in my opinion the best SW flight sim yet.
I own Rogue Squadron for the N64 (I stopped at the N64... I never was a big console gamer, it was PC for me. I owned a Nintendo, well my brother did, then I had a Sega for a while and then my trusty N64). It's okay. It's fun, especially with certain codes activated (KOELSCH...). But it lacks the depth and complexity of the PC ones. But it was never intended to posess those to such a degree too I guess, so no biggie. It's more arcade than anything and it gets it done right.
So let's hear it! You people who have played the flight sims, any stories? Any opinions you wish to share? My favorite ship out of all the flight sims at least the ones I have played is the TIE/D (Defender). This thing will rip you to pieces I don't care what you're in. The Missle Boat may come close though. But yeah the TIE/D is total ownage.
Though I'd still rather fly for the Alliance because on the whole they have more decent ships rather than just a few super ships. Let me put it this way, I'd rather eat at a restaraunt where they have plenty of good food rather than a restaraunt that has plenty of crappy food and severly limited stocks of fantastic food that they will probably be out of... see what I mean? Fly for the Empire, chances are you'll be in a TIE/F or TIE/B, which means you won't last long at all. If you're lucky you'll be in a TIE/I, that may extened your life expectancy byt 3 days lol. You probably wouldn't get to fly a TIE/D or TIE/A, and sure as hell probably woudn't get to fly a missle boat. You probably wouldn't even get a gunboat, those at least have shields! HOWEVER HOWEVER HOWEVER!!!! Y-Wings are utterly useless. An X-Wing can get most of a Y-Wing's job done (minus the disabling capability) and a B-Wing can get all of a Y-Wings job done and then some. Y-Wings handle like a overweight Hutt. So I'd rather fly an unshielded and frail TIE/F that at least has some sorta speed (roughly equal to an X-Wing). Good maneuvering will save your butt more than shielding will.
But the TIE/D gets everything right. Superior speed, Superior handling, adequate shielding, and packs a punch (4 laser cannons like the x-Wing PLUS two ion cannons thus making the TIE/D versatile). nice payload options. You can't go wrong with the Defender!
