TOS (http://www.starwars.com/eu/news/2003/02/news20030220.html) and T'Bone (http://www.starwarz.com/tbone/eu_news/#toons) also have updates on this.

Twenty animated Clone Wars serial shorts will appear on Cartoon Network in 2003-2004. Each toon will be about 2-3 minutes long. Read the article above for more detailed info!

Very, very cool! I plan to record them all and convert them to VCD, just in case LFL decides to never (or take forever to) release them on DVD format... style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif

You know, I've been waiting for the stories of the Clone Wars since about the first time I saw ANH.

God, I'm so glad their not half assing it. They have a lot of Clone Wars books and comics coming out. A recently released video game. Now, animated shorts.

Awesome.

Totally awesome.

Well, there's 20 of them. That totals 40-60 minutes of cartoons. Perhaps LFL will one day consoldate them into one big feature. That would be cool. But let's get them on T.V. first. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif

Y'know what's funny? We talked about this on ChronoRadio back in December. After the episode, I talked to some LFL "VIPs" (Rostoni, et al) with the following info:

The show being on the Cartoon Network.
The show being set during the Clone Wars.
The show being a new multi-episode series.
The show being a new 30 min animated series
The show being rumored to be prepped by ILM for its pilot, in a Beast Wars style.

They returned with the comment that...

There is NOT a new CG-style 30 minute cartoon series about the Clone Wars coming to the Cartoon Network.

We left it at that.

Come to find out, they were telling the truth, except the part that really mattered: Their statement was correct because it said 30 min stead of 3, and CG instead of traditional animation.

Amusing.

Quite so, but only if they took the photorealistic approach, not a real close approximation of BW or BM.

Anyway, this looks good, and I cannot wait! That artwork that is shown on TOS is interesting. The character holding 2 lightsabers looks a lot like the early scetches for the Sith character that was going to be used for EPII, y'know, before they went with Dooku. Interesting..................

GF, read the write-up on TOS and it will tell you that the character with the 2 Dooku lightsabers is based on the sketch from the early character Sith for AOTC. Her name is Asajj Ventress.

Oh, I haven't been able to get my hand on Republic #50 and Jedi: Mace Windu, yet. Books A Million hasn't gotten them, yet, and I have a 10% discount card. I think I will wait, though I hear the comics are "da bomb!"

Uhm, the cartoon will BE expanded universe. Lucas himself isn't making it. It'll be right there on par with the Droids and Ewoks cartoons. Licensed, created in conjunction with Lucasfilm, but pure Expanded Universe, Official Continuity stuff.

You can't say "EU sucks" and then say "Wow, the cartoon's gonna rock." Same thing.

From the latest homing beacon:

QUOTE

Genndy Tartakovsky gets up at seven in the morning, spends some time having breakfast and playing with his boy, and then heads off to work, to tell tales of samurai and Jedi. The acclaimed creator of "Dexter’s Laboratory" and "Samurai Jack" for the Cartoon Network, Tartakovsky is now helming Star Wars: Clone Wars, the series of animated shorts that will air on the network this fall.

"Clone Wars fits in my day here and there, as with everything else," he says. "Luckily ‘Samurai Jack’ is just ending up. I finished the last storyboard in December. So, slowly, Star Wars just took over. I'll still be doing post-production on ‘Samurai Jack’ until the very end of Star Wars, and we’ll be done Star Wars by late summer."

Many of the talents that helped mold "Samurai Jack" into the success that it is will be working on Clone Wars. "We're a pretty slim crew, because I wanted it to have more of a personal touch, so it doesn't get too huge," he says. "We have the Art Director Paul Rudish, who is doing all the main designs. The way he draws is the look of the show. We have Dave Dunnet, who is doing the background designs. Scott Wills, who is the background painter from ‘Samurai Jack.’ He's doing all the paintings. It's basically all the same people that did 'Jack,' except for a couple of new ones here and there. We have this guy from Oregon, Michel Gagne, and he's doing all the effects designs. I wanted all the effects to be really stylized and specific, so it feels more nurtured. He's going to design them all and animate a lot of them himself."

Genndy Tartakovsky was born in Moscow, and emigrated with his family to the United States in 1977, the same year the first Star Wars film burst onto the silver screen. "I just missed when the first one came out, but I saw it a year after that," he recalls. "As soon as I saw it, I fell in love. I loved comic books and cartoons when I was a kid, and samurai stuff with lots of action. So, Star Wars filled that niche with everything. It's got great fights, great characters, a classic hero myth -- that was what I was drawn to, the whole mythology of it."

It wasn’t long before Star Wars did sneak its way into young Tartakovsky’s sketchbook. "Just a little bit," he notes. "I couldn't draw that well when I was younger, so I was drawing more Scooby Doo and stuff like that. But Paul Rudish’s sketchbooks -- he's been drawing droids and stuff since he was 12. It's been a part of our life ever since they came out."

TheForce.net is reporting that the latest issue of Toyfare Magazine is sporting an article on the new Star Wars: Clone Wars cartoon series, coming to Cartoon Network this fall. Star Wars: Clone Wars will be a series of twenty animated shorts that will air on Cartoon Network in beginning this fall.

The article reveals that the premiere date is 8pm (ET) on November 7th, 2003, and throughout the month of November, a total of ten episodes will air. The remaining ten are scheduled to air in February 2004.

Star Wars: Clone Wars continues the saga where the live action feature film Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones left off - at the beginning of the Clone Wars, an epic civil war that pits the old Republic against a vast separatist movement led by the forces of evil.

Each episodic short will be two to three minutes in length and will air exclusively on Cartoon Network at regularly scheduled times during the network's regular programming beginning later this fall. Clone Wars will be produced at Cartoon Network Studios by a team led by Genndy Tartakovsky, the creator of Samurai Jack and Dexter's Laboratory.

As Clone Wars unfolds the valiant Jedi Knights lead the Republic's Clone Army against many new and ruthless adversaries across the galaxy. These new characters, epic battles and intricate stories will add an exciting new dimension to the Star Wars saga.

The series is expected to be collected on to DVD in time for the release of the sixth, and final, Star Wars movie in 2005.

Hope this info helps everyone. I can't wait!

Here's something about the Clone Wars Toons you'll all find interesting form the latest Entertainment Weekly:

"We were given two new villians (Assaj Ventress and the armored bounty hunter Durge) they wanted to see featured, art director Paul Rudish recalls of Lucas' directives.

So Lucas wanted Assaj and Durge featured in the toons... style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/scratchchin.gif

The article also mentioned that we'll see a lightsaber(s) get built, and the Jedi's Force Powers will be expanded upon, and it has a little pic of a duel between Anakin and Ventress.

The show will also feature authentic Star Wars sound effects and music.

Very Cool, although i didnt see the IG-88 like droid, maybe i didn't look hard enough. I've heard some complaints about the animation style, but i liked it. Had they had someone else try to do a exact rendition of the movies well i think it would have ended up a jumbled mess. This way we can concentrate on the action and the fun.

Wow - LOTS of complaints about not being able to download and see this thing. I personally had no trouble but I have to say that I completely understand everyone's frustration. I'm sure the next time there won't be a problem. This happened when the web cam started out too and it just took a little tweaking and such. Let's see what happens with part 2.

Still I agree - if you're going to offer the service, hype it up, and make people pay - you gotta test and come through with the goods.

I understand your pain, folks. However, let's give it a 3 strike rule.

I have to admit, the more I watch this the more I'm dissapointed. The battles just aren't exciting. The small clip we saw of the space battle was shockingly poor. The ground battle was almost as poor - one hit and the Republic flack platforms blew up.

To kick this thread off, here are some short summaries of season 2's eppies.

*slight SPOILERS ahead*

Chapter 11
Anakin continues his pursuit of Dark Jedi Asajj Ventress, disobeying Obi-Wan’s strenuous orders not to do so. During an intense dogfight, he tracks her through hyperspace to Yavin 4. Obi-Wan Kenobi, who is acting as a General of the Army of the Republic, dispatches a platoon of ARC Troopers to support his Padawan.

Chapter 12
Jedi Mace Windu leads his troops in an intense battle on the desert planet of Dantooine. The Droid Army counters the offensive by the Army of the Republic with an enormous vessel that releases a seismic charge, devastating the Clone troops. Mace Windu finds himself alone and surrounded by the massive Droid Army – without his lightsaber.

Chapter 13
Mace Windu continues to battle the Droid Army singlehandedly on Dantooine. Facing an overpowering enemy assault, the unarmed Jedi Master must rely on the Force as he seeks to thwart the Droid Army.

Chapter 14
On the icy planet of Ilum, chameleon-like Droids are planting explosives in the sacred Jedi Ice Caverns, the source of the crystals that power every Jedi’s lightsaber. Jedi Luminara Unduli and Barris Offee are on Ilum and engage in a ferocious battle but are trapped after an explosion. Yoda, aboard Padme’s ship, senses these two Jedi are in trouble and decides he must help rescue them.

Chapter 15
Padme’s head of security, Captain Typho, believes that going to Ilum is too dangerous. He tries to convince Yoda not to go, but the ancient Jedi Master is committed to rescuing Luminara Unduli and Barris Offee. Once the ship lands on Ilum, Yoda sets out in the snow, alone. To enter the sacred cave, he must first defeat a battalion of Droids.

Chapter 16
Padme is worried about Yoda, so she leaves the ship and heads out into frigid Ilum with C-3PO and R2-D2 to find him. As they approach the cave, they tangle with Droid soldiers. Inside the cave, Yoda tries to free the trapped Jedi. The entire crew then must battle Droid forces as they return to Padme’s ship.

Chapter 17
Back on Yavin 4, Anakin has cornered his would-be assassin, Asajj Ventress. Now the battle between these two highly skilled warriors truly begins.

Chapter 18
Anakin and Asajj continue their hand-to-hand duel on Yavin 4. Ventress, an expert fighter who battles using two lightsabers at the same time, proves to be a formidable foe for the young Jedi.

Chapter 19
The battle between Asajj and Anakin becomes more intense. Anakin, filled with rage, attacks his foe, the Dark Jedi and ally of Count Dooku, mercilessly. Still, she is a crafty fighter with a few tricks of her own.

Chapter 20
Obi-Wan Kenobi celebrates a successful campaign on Muunilinst, and the Army of the Republic has taken many prisoners. When Anakin returns from Yavin 4, the Jedi Master upbraids his charge for disobeying a direct order. Still, Obi-Wan is impressed with Anakin’s bravery. Meanwhile, on a distant planet, a band of Jedi Knights faces a mysterious and powerful enemy - General Grievous.

Episode 11 is pretty straightfoward: Anakin chases Ventress. There's some pretty funny stuff with Anakin and Ventress buzzing OB on the planet down below.

Regarding Chapter 14...perhaps someone can explain this to me. I know it's trivial. In the temple or whatever it was, there were three different kinds (colors) of crystals. They all seemed pretty abundant. I found it very odd that since purple crystals are plentiful, Mace is still the only one with a purple bladed saber.

I wish that this scene did not show so many purple crystals available. Is Mace the only one allowed to use a purple one? If so, that's seems like it's a bit of a waste. Even if it's because Mace is such a powerful Jedi and it's a respect or honor thing. But think of when a Padawan goes into that temple to construct his lightsaber. His master says, "Select a crystal from this temple...but leave all the purple ones, they're for Master Windu only." Just doesn't make sense. Not that it has to...I just like to nitpick.

Before I saw this scene, I just had my own interpretation: Mace used a combination of a blue and synthetic red crystal to make a purple colored blade. My new crappy interpretation: purple crystals provide more power and only an experienced Jedi master with the skill of Mace Windu can control it. I still wish there were other Jedi with purple sabers.

What are your opinions?

I gotta preface this with a general thumbs up to Tartakovsky with what he's done with this series. I like it a lot, I really do, but..............

This is what SW would look like if many a basher or fanboy was in charge of making it. Lightsaber battle after lightsaber battle with no cohesion or real story. The whole series is gettin a little tired for me. New location, new Jedi twirling a lightsaber around cutting droids.

I wonder if they will flow together better once they are released on DVD and there is an option (hopefully) that you can watch them all back-to-back.

Again, although it is SW, and to me any SW is good, it really makes me appreciate just how well George does it. He has the intense action scenes, the cool ships, the awesome special effects, but he really does a nice job of balancing them with slower scenes that let you catch your breath and connect the story.

Obi-Wan
04-05-2004, 03:45 PM

Chapter 19 was the best episode so far.

-Anakin getting stronger as the fight went on
-Her look of fear as he was overpowering her
-Him using the red saber as Yavin hung in the background
-THE FLASHES OF QUI-GON,OBI-WAN, AND YODA~!!!!!!

Awesome, Awesome Chapter.

Even though I can't wait till tomorrow to see Grevious for the first time, Chapter 19 would have been the perfect Climax to the series with Chapter 20 maybe showing the Main Jedi regrouping on Coruscant with Yoda spewing some convoluted philosophy as they get set to go back out into the fray.

That's right...because they haven't seen each other in the comics yet, have they?

Fave quote-"But know that I, General Grievous, am not completely without mercy. I will Grant you a Warrior's Death."

His voice was done perfectly and the animation was top-notch! I loved the three Lightsaber thing! And the ending was spectacular! I loved how they switched to Yoda at that moment Ki-Adi was gonna get it. Of course he didn't but it's stiil great! I can see why he is feared so much by the Jedi. He's the most deadly hunter ever. Who needs Dooku or Asajj?! The close up on the eye was done amazing too, he looks fearful. He's just so style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/censored.gif amazing!!!!!!

So, he definiately was meant to survive Chapter 9.

What he does in the cartoon isn't necessarily what he'll do in the movie.

Looked to me like he was just concealing his true size and stretching out (that was very effective too), not like he was actually growing.

To avoid spoiling... since I haven't read the comics... does the last jedi fighting GG survive? It certainly looks desperate, but I can't imagine they'd leave it hanging there and just have that jedi alive in Ep III without showing how he escapes that desperate situation. In fact, there are several Jedi in that final sequence that I wonder about their survival. Did they?

Possibly, but she was already seen alive in comics that take place months after the cartoons long before the toons ever premiered.

So if they really intended for her to have died in Chapter 19 then the cartoons really can't be considered as part of the real Clone Wars continuity.

I thought there was only five or ten episodes, since they're longer.

Does anyone know what time it'll air? Information would be greatly appreciated.

There are 5 new episodes total, each one will be about 12 minutes long.

They will air Monday thru Friday, each one airing at 7:00 PM on Cartoon Network, and becoming available on Hyperspace at about 7:20 PM.

Should be good. For non-Hyperspace members, CartoonNetwork.com is showing the eps after they premiere, I think by the next am. Double check the site, but good stuff there.

not too shabby, the first part was great, i loved the custom paint job on the LAAT/i and the clone with the quad lasers strapped to his chest

but, i don't think the love story translates well to the cartoon medium...

Due to uncharacteristic stupidity in translating Eastern to Central Time, I missed the TV premiere. In a way it worked out for the best--the DVD is out tomorrow so I'll rewatch the first 20, catch 21 online, then see the 22 premiere. This is why it puzzles me that they didn't release the DVD the week BEFORE the new season.
