View Full Version : Dragon*Con 2004 Panel - Who Can Participate?

Last year's Dragon*Con panel, arranged by the RON team and consisting of Shawn Johnston, Linda Lyons, Pamela Kinney, Michael Smith, and Nathan Butler, went pretty well. We're expecting the ConCarolinas sessions (yes, plural, there are three of them) with Rich Sigfrit, Ron Garner, Janine Garner, Nathan Butler, and possibly Will the Disembodied (uhm, Bodied?) Voice, should go great as well.

A while back, I spoke with the Matters of the Force people about having another SW Fan Audio panel at Dragon*Con for 2004. We're aiming for Sunday Sept. 5, though the con runs from Fri. the 3rd through Mon. the 6th. If need be, I'll just take a personal day from work.

But, right now, as far as I know, I'm the only one confirmed to be going, so I'm the only one we can confirm so far will be on the Dragon*Con panel. It's held in Atlanta, GA and info is at www.dragoncon.com.

I need to see who else would be interested in being on the panel, who can definitely be there, who *might* be there, and so on. I believe there are a guaranteed 5 - 6 seats on any panel, but we can certainly add more, but those names wouldn't appear in the program, most likely.

If we are going to have all participant names in the program, I need a definite list by mid-June. July 1 is the latest I can give the names to the MOTF people.

i'd love to go!
BUT i've only got 10 vaca days to spend, and i don't get them all to use at the same time anytmore this year, i have to accrue them. i won't get the 10th one til Dec 24th. stupid company...

anyway, i also already have the Farscape con i've paid for already coming up in November. PLUS my 10-year high school reunion is tentatively set for July 24. and i also wanna come to ConCarolinas. partly because my best friend lives in Charlotte and i haven't seen her in almost 5 years. she has a son i've never even met!

so that's 3 events this summer and 1 this fall i want to do. and i'm not even sure i can swing it so that i'll have weekends off by that time. which would mean spending even MORE vaca days.

is it wrong to WANT to be laid off so i can be on unemployment for a while to go on trips....?

Heh heh heh. Wrong, no? Feasible . . . ? style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/devil.gif

We'll, we're getting info together now for both DC and CC this year. So far, there will be 5 of us at CC for sure (Rich, Ron, Janine, Gregory, me). So far, only 1 at DC (me).

Well, you know me, Nate. I'd love to go. But it's looking unlikely that I would know if I could go or not until a month and a half or three before the con. So I guess that means you should plan on me not being there. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif

I'll do my best to attend. I don't know what my school schedule will be for Sept. yet, but as soon as I find out more info I will tell you, M.O.

Con-Carolinas is looking more like a no for me as June draws closer, but I am still trying my damndest to figure out a way. Again, I'll keep you posted.

I really hope you can find a way to come to Dragon*Con, Amy. It would be an honor to meet the Queen of Fan AudioTM in person. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blush.gif

It's a slight possibility I may go. It all depends on a great number of factors really. All I can say is, we'll see. It won't be for a few more months though.

I know that we would like to interview, or at least get a few minutes with anyone that can make it to ConCarolinas. I figure we'll be able to make filler audio for quite a few shows. It would be great to get a list of everyone who is going to be there and would like to be on the show so we can have at least a little show prep.

I've heard of show prep. Don't know if it would be applicable to RotO

Oh I'll be there, but this year I'm going to be trying to drum up support for Small Town Creatures along with my lead artist Justin. So, I don't really know what my availability is.

Oh well...I'll know more as we get closer.

There is a chance I may make this, but will have to see. My niece/nephew is due sept/oct in Austin, so I am trying to get over there sometime then if I can afford it.

My next guaranteed trip however, is May. So if anyone is in Arizona, LA or Philly and wants to catch up, let me know. I am attending E3 and will be in CA for 1 week, hopefully getting to Arizona for a day or 2. Still undecided on Philly, Toronto or Austin. Austin and Toronto, I have family. Philly has baseball. But I have a huge visit planned for later this year to see relatives, once my niece/nephew is born.

So anyone going E3? style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

That'd be really cool, Krista.

Basically, we're looking at a fan audio panel right now, BUT there have been some snags. For some reason, the organizers think that the new fan audio panel is just a repeat of the RON panel from last year, so if it's billed as such, you're gonna find a very empty panel because those who were to be on it, won't be. We're workin' on it.

cinemafreak

well, the Requiem of the Outcast crew have been rejected as guests of DragonCon. We are the underground of the underground. The truly outcast. But we will be there as paying customers, able to engage in more trouble than we could before. We will definetly be available for that panel.

well, as of right now, i am planning to go. after living within 90 minutes of Atlanta for most of my life and never making it to a single D*C, i feel that it's my duty as a genre fan to attend, and this year looks good! plus, lots of Farscape-types will be there, and since i'm a Farscape junkie, and a con-***** (that is, a ***** FOR cons, not a ***** AT cons....), i'm feeling the need to go even more.

however, i WILL have to find a bit of alone-time in my house when i can close the windows (ugh, no a/c, yucky heat-ness...) to eliminate the traffic sounds and other outside noises, hope the cats (all 6 of them) are in a calm & sleepy mood instead of spastic, and sit down and do the re-records for JansWalker. since if i don't do that before i meet him in person (since he says he'll be there, too), i will be in fear of my life!

so yes, Nafun, i'd LOVE to be on another panel. and this time with advance warning! lol
so you BETTER GO! AND BRING MY BEST FRIEND, beeyotch!

I'll be at Dragon*Con, along with my Mom, and Will. Ron may or may not be going, depending on if he goes to Korea during that time.

07-19-2004, 09:28 PM
YES I will be there! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif And no I won't kill you if you don't record them before I meet you. We can just do a quick studio session in the hotel room (no bad jokes, please).

I will be bringing my laptop so I can work on Invasion Begins on the flights to and from Atlanta, and I'd want to show you a work-in-progress version of the mod if and when you are interested in seeing it. Are you?

Tthough it would be nice if someone else has a laptop with a better video card than a GeForce2 Go card. Graphics are pretty choppy on that one when there are tons of skips buzzing around.

At first I didn't think anyone was showing up. Now a lot of folks are. I'm really excited now. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

Nathan Butler
07-20-2004, 09:11 PM
Okay, so here's the general gist of what is going on, as far as I know.

Recently, Janet, who helped run the show at ConCarolinas, showed us (Rich and yours truly) the schedule of events as it existed at that point. What it had listed was a panel for 10 a.m. on September 6, which was given the same name and general description as the panel last year.

Now, that panel last year, for those who don't recall, was not meant to be a fan audio panel, but a Rise of Nobility panel. That Keith Abbott and Michael Smith were interested in convincing the others (Linda Lyons, Pamela Kinney, and, though I dunno if he was in on the early discussions, Shawn Johnston) to have me get on the panel as well. That's why you'll notice that the panel was not really dealing with fan audio, although I brought that in, nor fan radio shows, though we ended up going to that format because the discussion became kind of stilted, but was very focused on RON. That was the point.

However, this year's panel was not meant to be an RON panel. Shawn will be there promoting Small Town Creatures, but may or may not be on the panel. Pamela Kinney will be there, but she has flat-out said she won't be on the panel, or at least wasn't intending to be. Michael Smith can't be there, as far as I know. Keith isn't able to be there. I'm assuming with her general withdrawal from the fan audio community with the exception of working more or less in seclusion on Surrender of Promise (and not wanting writing credits for it) that Linda Lyons won't be there either. So the "RON" part of this year's panel is generally non-existant.

But . . . that's how it's listed. My educated guess is that when we brought up the idea of having a fan audio panel this year, they simply went back to the one last year and re-used the same info, since all we'd confirmed is that we'd wanted to have one, not who would be on it.

So, as it stands right now, as far as I know, the issue is being dealt with by the scheduling folks, using new information I provided, to create a new listing for the event. However, until we get confirmation on the issue, I'm not even sure there will definitely *be* a panel, though it's probably an 80% likelihood or above.

Now, here's what I had given them as the new info:

Name: "The Star Wars Fan Audio Revolution" (or if there's not space for
that "Star Wars Fan Audio")
Description: "Representatives of starwarsfanworks.com, Star Wars fan radio shows, and Star Wars fan audio dramas provide a look at the growing Star Wars fan audio genre." Panelists, as of right now, look to be: Nathan P. Butler; Rich Sigfrit; Ron Garner; Janine Garner; Amy Ferrell.

Already, a problem arises, and I'm pretty sure it's too late to amend the list of panelists. Ron won't be able to be there, so we have one name listed who won't be on the panel.

That also leaves anyone else off that list because I was told I could only tell them five people to list names in the program, assuming they're still tweaking all of that. At the time, I was only sure of me, Amy, and the ROTO team (minus Ron now), and while I knew that Shawn would be there, I was under the impression that he was there just for STC, not for fan audio. Now we also know that Krista and Chris will be there.

So, here's what the deal SEEMS to be at the moment. There SHOULD be a panel at 10 a.m. on Sept. 6. Whether or not it is OUR panel has yet to be seen, but it certainly APPEARS that it is the one I asked for. IF that is the case, then the panel SHOULD be listed in the program by the info above, which DOES include the absent Ron and WILL NOT include Krista, Chris, Shawn, or, in fact, anyone outside of the aforementioned five. HOWEVER, while we are told that there are limits to the number of panel slots for the PROGRAM, I am led to believe that the number of people actually PRESENT for the panel is NOT limited to five (as, last year, Chris Hanel was supposed to have been on the panel with Shawn, Linda, Pam, Michael, and me, but he, honest to God, overslept). IF that is the case, as I believe that it is, then we should have no problem having Krista, Chris, and whomever on the panel. We will likely, however, have to be VERY careful with our audio recording of the event, as we will have a lot of people trying to speak with a small number of microphones. (We used two for the panels at CC; one was passed around, while the other was stationary by me and Rich.)

If this is the case, if we do end up in the situation of having a panel but not everyone's name in the program, I will want to get info on who will definitely be on the panel finalized by late August, so that I can do up some bio/resume style flyers that have the info on everyone on there, so I can copy them at work and hand them out at the panel.

So, current panel:

CONFIRMED
Rich
Janine
Nathan
Amy
Krista

NEED CONFIRMATION
Chris
Shawn

Also, Brian (Gates): You appeared on CR, but haven't done specific fan audio work otherwise. Was your comment earlier and indication that you'd be there to SEE the panel, or were intending or interested in PARTICIPATING on the panel?

J-9
07-21-2004, 11:01 AM
I suppose I'll do your silly little panel..... style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif

So, do you need me to bring the sound board and mics?

Nathan Butler
07-21-2004, 04:26 PM
Yes. Far as I know.

Jans_Walker
07-22-2004, 01:55 AM
I can bring a mic as well. Probably will if Amy doesn't get her lines in. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif

I'd like to confirm, but I have to defer to Shawn as I'm technically working for him while I'm at DC. He may have something planned for us having to do with Small Town Creatures. Although, Shawn, I really really wanna be on this one, hehe.

It'll probably be my last before I depart for the airport.

Chris

RogueProductions
07-22-2004, 04:14 PM
That's fine Chris. As it was, I was going to be there for this one. Whether I'm on it or not (that's your decision Nathan), I'll be there. Yes we will be promoting STC, as we should, but I also want to give kudos to the Star Wars audio drama actors, many of whom have some interest in STC, so I say we should include that.

So I'll be at the panel (I might not be on it though style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif ).

Nathan Butler
07-22-2004, 08:42 PM
It looks like we'll be good to go. The new revised schedule for DC, which should be the FINAL schedule, went up today. It's got that info I provided.

Dunwoody[/b][/quote]

Bear in mind that these can change, as can panelists, so that's just our reserved spot. Also note that we are at 11:30, not 10:00 as previously noted, but it *is* on Sept. 6, which I believe is the Monday of the con.

I've just emailed the Dragon*Con folks to see about what'll be up with 1-day ticket sales, so I'll post once I know something. Right now, since it's past July 15, full 4-day passes run $85. (Since I'm only intending on going the day of the panel right now, I find that kind of expensive for something I really wouldn't want to do for four days straight, so I'm hoping to do a 1-day pass like last year.)

Jans_Walker
07-22-2004, 10:10 PM
Wish you could come for more than a day. It would be a shame to meet you at the panel and then have to leave right after it. Maybe we could arrange a group thing for all the SWFW folks to meet outside of DragonCon some night.

Nathan Butler
07-22-2004, 11:39 PM
I'd be there for the day of the panel. The panel is the last day, so y'know.

As for the panel, Janet has told me that since it starts at 11:30, it's supposedly a 1 hour panel, but with a half hour break (or something like that), so it's more like 11:30 - 1:00. I think that's what she's sayin.

Jans_Walker
07-23-2004, 02:09 AM
That's going to be close. Too close. My plane departs at 2:40pm your time. I may have to duck out early. Sucks. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif Cause this means I'll get to see everyone for about an hour.... with the previous three days not equalling much if anything in the way of time with everyone on this board cept Shawn.

RogueProductions
07-23-2004, 10:47 AM
Yeah, that will run me very close as well, but we'll see. Don't worry Chris, it's not gonna be all work and no play. The "work" wil be actually fun stuff. The main thing I really want to see this year is Sansweet's presentation anyways.

Nathan Butler
07-23-2004, 02:27 PM
Well, Chris, I live in the area and Rich (maybe even Amy, not sure) will be staying with us, so there'll be people going between DC and the apartment often enough, and I'm sure there'll be chances to hang out. It also depends on whether I end up with a press pass or not. It's doubtful, but if Chris Hanel got one last year for TFN, maybe I can (but it's doubtful).

By the way, Monday's 1-day passes are $30 at the door, with them being $40 for every other day.

Just so everyone knows: I am going to be creating what amounts to resumes for each of the fan audio panelists that I know will be there, or coming up with some kind of handout that details all of our various works, so that those who are at the panel can see what we've done and get an idea of who we are, without having to have prior knowledge, and without us having to take up a lot of time with long introductions.

DRAGON*CON 2004: FAN AUDIO REVOLUTION PANEL PARTICIPANTS

• Nathan P. Butler
Butler is the founder and site operator of StarWarsFanworks.com, the only major Star Wars fan site dedicated entirely to the fan audio genre. He is also the host of one radio show (ChronoRadio) and a frequent guest on three others (Star Wars en Direct, Requiem of the Outcast, and Digital Llama Radio). He is the founder of Rayzur’s Edge Audio, the banner under which he wrote, directed, and mixed five short audio dramas in his Anthology series (Doubts Cast, Dreamscape, The Mob, Addiction, and Responsibility), wrote, directed, co-mixed, and starred in the world’s first serious Star Wars fan audio drama (the feature-length Second Strike, mixed with Christopher Hanel), and wrote his newest project, Nothing Changes (mixed by Steve Fluharty). Butler has also engaged in voice acting for other fan audio projects (Crossroads, Resurrection, etc.) and fan films (That Prequel Movie, Attack of the Killer Clones from Outer Space). Beyond fan audio, Butler is the creator and compiler of the Star Wars Timeline Gold at StarWarz.com and is a published Star Wars comic book writer for Dark Horse Comics and Lucasfilm, with his first story, “Equals and Opposites,” appearing this fall in Star Wars Tales #21.

• Rich Sigfrit
Sigfrit is the creator, mixer, and lead panelist for the radio show Requiem of the Outcast. He is also the webmaster of the show’s dedicated website, RequiemOfTheOutcast.com. Sigfrit has also pursued voice acting with the role of General Rijj Sigfrid in Anthology: Addiction, while also taking a behind the scenes role as the mixer on the forthcoming fan audio drama seies X-wing: Gold Squadron, written by Wil Kitchenmaster.

• Janine Garner
Garner is the “super fan” panelist (as opposed to the “fan” and “non-fans” on the show) for the radio show Requiem of the Outcast. Along with her husband, Ron Garner, they round out the trio that carries on the show created by Rich Sigfrit. Garner’s fan ventures have also branched into costuming, and she is often seen at conventions as both a fan audio panelist and a costuming panelist.

• Amy Ferrell
Ferrell is a fan audio voice actress and recipient of the 2004 Star Wars Fanworks Fan Audio Academy Award for Best Actress in an Audio Drama. Her roles have included “Mom” in Anthology: To Overcome, the female Jedi in Anthology: No Way Out, Dira Ritah in Anthology: Dreamscape, the narrator in The Logan Chronicles: The Lost Patrol, and her two award-winning performances as Kolita Jessit in Anthology: Responsibility and Kristara Eri’lur in Second Strike.

• Krista Kolesar
Kolesar began assisting Rayzur’s Edge Audio as a concept artist for Second Strike before moving into voice acting roles. In 2003 and 2004, she has portrayed Miss Lira in Anthology: Addiction, the Voice in Anthology: To Overcome, and lead roles as Taleena in Parallels and Triina Asante in Nothing Changes. She has also recently been cast as Seffy in the forthcoming cartoon series Small Town Creatures.

• Christopher Walker
Walker has played roles both behind the scenes and in front of a microphone for projects ranging from brief roles in Resurrection, Rise of Nobility, Anthology: The Mob, and Nothing Changes, to writing and directing duties on his Anthology episode (To Overcome, mixed by Steve Fluharty) and production of a full-fledged New Jedi Order video game mod for X-wing: Alliance, entitled The Invasion Begins. Walker has also recently been cast as Gib "Testimony" Tester in the forthcoming cartoon series Small Town Creatures.

RogueProductions
08-12-2004, 11:57 PM
Krista will be playing the character of Seffy in Small Town Creatures. Chris will be performing the role of the recurring librarian, Gib (Jib) "Testimony" Tester.

I might or might not be around for the panel (I really don't know at this point). But, I hope that helps you Nathan.

Looks good. Actually, to be picky, The New Jedi Order Project is the name our group calls itself, to be honest. Somewhat of a production company, but not really.

Okay, edited to reflect that info. I'll use that as my template for getting handouts ready. Any other changes?

Yay! It looks good. I'm so happy to be included in the panel. I really look forward to meeting you all. I hope to have a good time at D*Con, and from what people have been telling me, it's going to be a great time. Thanks a bunch for saying such nice things about me Nathan, I know I can be a pain sometimes! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/happy.gif

Heh, don't I know it!

(Just kidding, I promise.)

I think I've finalized the text and I'll be printing it out at home tonight to make some copies. Figure how many copies? 30?

Well, bad news, in case you didn't read the pre-con report I put up yesterday. It's looking right now like Rich won't be able to be there.

I would say that's balanced by the good news (I just got a Media Pass that lets me, as a rep of Fanworks, get into the con free for the entire weekend), but, y'know, somehow, I don't think the good comes close to outweighing the bad yet. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif

wow. I thought I was the only one that thought that was bad news. Ah well. Thanks anyway. I can't wait to see what you guys bring back.

here is an open oportunity for anyone that wants to record a segment or interview from DC for RotO. Give us a report from the con. Interview someone with a kickass costume (include pics), film (try to include film), or something you think is cool. Just record it on an audio device, video camera, whatever, and email me, and I'll try to put it in the show.

Yeah, it's just Janine this time. I guess the plus side is that we still get to record Janine's segment for CR #17. The downside, other than the obvious, is that Rich was going to be staying with us, so we miss out on our first real houseguest in the new apartment. D'oh! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif

Yeah, but I dunno exactly when I'll be there, cuz it's my first child-less weekend with Deanna other than our moving weekend.

I just want to say a very big thank you for the outstanding writeup Nathan. It is hopefully going to be a great year for us, and I appreciate everything you've done for STC such as carrying our news bits. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

Were it not for a few newly-arisen issues, Deanna and I could've offered, but with all the hubbub the last couple of weeks, we'd be stuck. You looked into other hotels in the area? If the cost isn't as much as whatever you'd pay at the DC hotels, maybe you could go for a hotel a bit away from the DC hotels, but then use the extra cash to pay for a rental car to get back and forth from it.

I take it Krista's in the same boat now?

Jans_Walker

As in our chat, but for everyone else's benefit.. Krista is in the same boat.

Not Shawn's fault. Just the weather's.

Ok folks. We got it all worked out. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wave.gif

And the credit goes to Deanna. I hadn't tried to figure out a way to get two more people into the apartment for the weekend up till then because, with Chi gone, we were intending on this being our first "us weekend" since we moved (which was actually our only one so far, which was taken up by moving from apt to apt).

But when I was talking to her about the problem last night, *she* suggested them staying with us, which opened up the possibility. So, yeah, all fixed, and not by my machinations but hers.

Jans_Walker

And we both really appreciate that. Thank you. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/happy.gif We know how much you want a weekend to yourselves so we'll do our best to let you have that time together. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

And, for those wondering, both Chris and Krista are here, safe and sound, and we saw Davey at the airport picking up Amy, so they're safe and sound, and I think stopping by soon.

D*Con was very fun this year. All the interesting panels. All the pictures, all the costumes, the hottie BBF Jr. I got a picture of him, he picked me up, I wasn't expecting it at ALL. It definately was worth all the chaos. I might actually consider going next year because it was so much fun. Being the twin rocked. Lots of people took pictures, and it was really, really cool finding a Trinity, two agents, a Persaphone (sp?) and two Neo costumers. I had a blast, and there were only two panels that I felt like sleeping. Never go to Elvish 101 if you can avoid it. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif Anyway, I'm glad I got the experience to go, though I wish I could have promoted STC more. Say-La-Vee. Bubai!

I shall post the final quick wrap-up sometime in the next few days, along with the panel audio file. The panel was good, but very small audience, so it had some definite lag to it. So, better probably than the first panel, not as good as ConCarolinas. Turned out well, though, I think. I'll get those up soon.

Thank you so very much Nathan and Deanna, I really, really appreciated that you let Chris and me stay with you. You both have hearts of gold. Malachi was a sweety, and I'm honored to have met him. I just wanted to give a heart felt, "thank you" from myself and Chris. Without your help, we'd be stuck, and would have had no place to go. Thanks so very much. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/happy.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

You're welcome. Hopefully we weren't too much of a drag. We managed to play hosts, be ill (well, I was), take care of getting Chi where he needed to be, and still had a decent "couple" weekend as well. Minus the illness, you couldn't ask for better than that, I'd imagine.

And Chris: I'll be mailing you your battery charger and glasses (found those after you left, too) as soon as I get your mailing address. Any ideas on how to effectively pack glasses? (I may just see if I have an old glasses case to use, but I'm open to other ideas.)

Alright, the convention report and the fan audio panel recording mp3 should all be up by 9 p.m. ET. I'm about to start the file uploads and such, but I'm WAY nauseated again (I hate whatever this illness is lately), so I'm posting now rather than when I might be incapacitated. So, keep an eye out. When the front news page has the wrap-up story, that's when the upload on everything is done.

Only thing not done from DC is to add the panel participation to everyone's profiles, but I'll do that when I do the TTV and SWAB news bytes tomorrow or Thursday.

That's embarrassing. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blush.gif

Um... wrap them in a bunch of Kleenex or toilet paper and they'll be shielded well enough.

I really thought I could have done better with that panel. I realized afterwords when that artist/Jedi dude asked me what era that TIB was set in that I completely forgot to actually explain what my projects' storylines were. I guess my mind went completely blank. And, as per custom, I'm not exactly the best with improvisation. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thud.gif

But thank you once again for allowing us to stay with you. It was an awesome experience.
