Since I keep reposting this same list to be edited in the Second Strike thread, I figure I might as well make a new thread.

Team members should check HERE, not the 2S thread, for where we currently stand, barring any tweaks (which will undoubtedly happen) to RPG stats to make them better fit the story.

Just updated the first post with current progress. Patrick Karnes has now joined to help out with the RPG stats. I've spent part of today digging through my WotC RPG stuff and coming up with similar stats to tweak for people. Zirik "Quintas" Pahl, for instance, is a slight variant on Jerec's stats, while Prevoda Vatil and Jor Ti'lana are based on the stats for Qui-Gon Jinn from the first Core Rulebook and the older Obi-Wan Kenobi from the Revised Core Rulebook. Next up, I think, will be coming up with stats for the various pilots from Addiction, using the Wraith Squadron stats from Gamer #9.

Nathan Butler
05-31-2004, 04:59 AM
Just added all the pilots using the Low-Level Pilot (regular good pilot as opposed to starfighter ace) from the Revised Core Rulebook, and took care of the rest of the stormtroopers and Security Guard SC-5 using stats for High-Level Stormtroopers and Generic Security Guard, from the Revised Core Rulebook and an issue of Gamer.

My goal is to have at least one set (d6 or d20) of generic but slightly tweakable stats for every single entry (minus the original ships) by the time we leave for ConCarolinas. Then it'll be a matter of finding comparable stats from the other gaming system (d6 or d20) and to have Patrick start doing some conversions for those things that don't have them.

Nathan Butler
06-03-2004, 01:03 AM
Anyone who is going to be at ConCarolinas: I'll have the working copy of the sourcebook, which I'm continuing to edit, with me at CC, all printed out, minus any color ad or cover pages.

Nathan Butler

How awesome is this? Tom Hodges, who did artwork for the sourcebook, is now doing "Reversal of Fortune," a Star Wars comic strip for Hyperspace at SW.com when their new daily strips begin.

Okay, here's an update.

The Sourcebook is in an odd place right now. All of the regular text is done. That is, I might add more flavor text, but what's really left is the gaming statistics.

A few months ago, a guy came on to help do the stats for the sourcebook, and got a lot done...before a computer crash destroyed it all. Now, that person is about to enter the Army (I think it's the Army), and has said he's racing to get everything still done before he leaves very soon, but it's been a while since I've gotten a progress update, and several times I've been told I'd have something within a day or so, then didn't. So far, I haven't seen any of this person's new work.

So, I'm trying to get ahold of him, but I'm thinking that the sourcebook has three options.

1. He does get his stuff all done and tweaked and to me before he leaves, and I insert it, polish with more flavor text, and the sourcebook comes out, as planned, featuring Second Strike and the first five Anthology episodes.

2. He doesn't get the stuff to me, and I finish it all on my own (which would be very difficult, since I know next to nothing about d6 to d20 conversions, but that's mostly all that's left), then it comes out, as planned, covering 2S and the first five Anthology eps.

3. The entire project gets retooled into a sort of "Essential Guide" format, which would possibly be released as separate editions for Second Strike, each episode of Anthology (including the most recent two), plus Parallels, plus Nothing Changes, plus (probably) Matted, and then, later, Kids. A series of essential guides to the various REA audio productions.

The more I think about it, the more #2 seems the least likely option. I just don't have the kind of time necessary to do the ton of conversions, unless someone steps in to assist again.

As far as I know, #1 is still what is going to happen, but if it doesn't, it may very well become #3.

Man, that's gotta be a tough decision, Nathan. I know you've been doing a lot of work on the sourcebook already, so to get stuck with such a problem so near the end has got to be frustrating. I'm sure you can find somebody who would be willing to help out with the stats. Personally, though, I would like an "Essential Guide" format more. But that's just me, since I don't play RPG and anything other than character/vehicle/weapon/etc. info in a sourcebook is useless to me. But, whatever you decide, I can't wait to see the finished product. Especially if it gets around to subsequent volumes featuring other SW fan audios.

leandar
10-11-2004, 07:51 PM
If you have a copy of the new version of the SW RPG, there should be a conversion chart from the old D6 version to the D20. Personally, I'd be content with just a D6. The new one is too much a pain in the ass to try to work, and the old West End version is much, MUCH easier to use.

Nathan Butler
10-11-2004, 11:19 PM
That's the thing. It's not all in one format. It's in both, but most don't have two sets of stats. Some have just d20, some have just d6. And that conversion table is alright, but not particularly specific, which makes conversions tough for me to do, especially backwards from d20 to d6, rather than vice versa.

We'll see. I've emailed the guy who was slated to be helping me, but I realized that he had told me he had about 2-3 weeks left before entering the army . . . about 2-3 weeks ago. For all I know, he's already gone, and I just wasn't informed at all. Looking into it.

Nathan Butler
10-12-2004, 03:33 PM
Got an email back from the RPG guy. He's intending on getting it all to me this week, with daily progress reports each night.

So, here's hopin'...

Nathan Butler

Okay, since I'm excited again, here's the best guess at what you'd see of the first three "Fanworks Adventure Journals," assuming the starting sourcebook goes over well.

I hope it goes well, too . . . and then, the "nightly update" didn't come last night, so I wonder if I'm getting my hopes up. Hopefully not. Good guy, just a busy guy.

By the way, the images on that first AJ cover, the one with Traiven vs. Dahrias . . . Those are from a page of the Prelude to Hope prequel comic, From the Ashes, that I wrote and Craig Moore drew, which will never see the light of day. The flashback story covered in that comic, though, became the first part (that is, the first released segment) of Nothing Changes (the whole flashback to the destruction of the family homestead).

We need a RotO RPG. Maybe even a board game.

I'm really looking forward to seeing this project when its done. I've seen some sneeky peaks over the year and have been most impressed.

Nathan Butler
10-14-2004, 12:37 PM
Well, I'm hoping it'll get done, y'know? I'd promised 2004. :: crosses fingers ::

Nathan Butler
10-26-2004, 02:01 PM
Well, at the moment, we still sit with nothing turned in by the RPG stat gent. As was the case before, I'm continually getting "oh, you'll have this and this tonight/tomorrow/this-weekend," but nothing has been sent to me yet. So, I really can't say whether we'll hit my hopeful target of Dec. 1 or not. Best guess is "no." I still want it out in 2004 if at all possible, but if it is, we're probably looking at around New Year's Eve maybe. Really late 2004.

Right now, I'm working on coming up with adventure suggestions to put in, more quotes to toss in, and some more flavor text boxes. Basically trying to spruce it up a bit more.

Anyone have any favorite quotes or blurbs from Second Strike or the first five episodes of Anthology that you might want to see? Spin-off stories that might make for interesting adventure ideas you'd want to see included?

Nathan Butler
11-04-2004, 12:34 PM
The latest update:

Still heard nothing from the RPG stat guy after numerous attempts at contact. Finally sent an email to him again about it. The gist goes something like this . . .

If I don't get at least half of the finished stats/conversions by next Friday (Nov. 12), then the project as an RPG sourcebook will be ending. Even if I do get them by Nov. 12, I'll have to get the other half by Dec. 1, or it'll be ending. If I hear nothing by Nov. 12, obviously, it'll be ending.

Instead, the project would be resurrected without gaming stats, as an Essential Guide or a different type of thing I've been considering doing for quite a while now. Either way, without stats coming into my hands, it'll be possible, but not entirely likely, that the EG version would come out in 2004 still. The other, preferred alternate project would not be done until early 2005, most likely, but would be fully-expandable to later take in other fan audio projects. I've emailed Rich about it, because I'd be needing Rich's help for part of what I'd be wanting to do.

So, as of next Friday night, we should have an idea what's up.

leandar

I'm sorry to say it, but it looks like you've had it stuck to you on this one.

Nathan Butler
11-04-2004, 08:21 PM
Yup. It's only been on hold waiting for those stats since, what, June or so, possibly? Oh well, if he doesn't come through, the thing Rich would have to help get started (fingers crossed) would turn out to rock anyway. So, we'll see.

cinemafreak
11-04-2004, 10:53 PM
Of course it will Nathan.... its me.

But besides that, there may be some guys at ConCarl that could help out. I think that we should do both anyway. It would be a good repository for the RPG anyway, right?

Nathan Butler
11-04-2004, 11:08 PM
Yeah, except, of course, we have to have the actual RPG stats. But yeah, we could include stats with the other thing.

Nathan Butler
11-12-2004, 08:18 PM
Alright, no word AT ALL from the RPG gent. So, I'm officially announcing that the sourcebook version of the project has been CANCELLED.

However, a new project is already underway to use the materials and provide for easy future expansions to include other audio dramas. For now, we'll just refer to that new incarnation as the Phoenix Project. (Hey, Fanworks was once "Project Sonja," so there!)

Nathan Butler
02-03-2005, 09:18 PM

Nathan Butler

Speaking of which, I've gotten the bios done for four of the NC/EC characters now, so now comes scouring Parallels, NC, and EC for every possible character, ship, planet, and event reference to get it all in there.

Still, I'll probably get it done before my self-imposed deadline of June 1. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

Josie Danger
02-07-2005, 07:45 PM
Yep. That'd be them. I'm glad you like it. I almost gave up. I'd already crumpled 9 progressing papers, and as I said, I'm still not very happy with it. The faces took the longest, and that's where I'm having some issues. Gr.

Nathan Butler
02-07-2005, 09:25 PM
Well, I really dig it. And with the more anime/manga style clothing it TOTALLY fits what I would've envisioned as that period of SW history with that fantasy flare. Great stuff. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

If you want to do something else, tell me. I'll find someone/something.

Heck, I might even provide you with "Always in Motion: Ambush on An'Kerra" once it's done, before it's actually out. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif

Nathan Butler
02-08-2005, 01:07 PM
A note on how massive this is: With still a few characters from NC, EC, and Parallels to put in, plus all the AIM:AOA characters to put in...the CHARACTERS chapter alone clocks in at 56 pages.

Update:

The following chapters are 100% done.

Credits Page
Introduction
Chapter 2: Organizations
Chapter 3: Starships
Chapter 4: Ferri'sol
Chapter 5: Other Planets and Cultures
Chapter 6: The Four Battles of Ferri'sol
Chapter 7: The FlashDeath Project
Chapter 8: Historical Documents
Appendix II: Cast and Crew
Appendix III: Awards and Accolades

That leaves...

Table of Contents
Chapter 1: Characters
Appendix I: Chronology

I'll be digging more into Characters this weekend, and once that's done, I can finalize the Chronology Appendix and Table of Contents. Then it's just a matter of piecing it all together with the right page numbering in Acrobat.

It's looking very much like I'll be wrapping up the normal text this weekend. The only thing that might remain is to add in some flavor text quote boxes, but I'm actually probably going to get that done tomorrow as well. That should allow me to get the final touches done very soon. I'm going to shoot for releasing it on the same day as Everything Changes, Part IV (April 15) or on May 1.

Right now, the Characters chapter is about 55 pages long. I'm figuring it'll hit 60 before I'm done, as I have about eight characters left to detail (mostly from Everything Changes).

EDIT:

Update: Characters chapter, the largest one, is proofed. Now I have to put in those changes, after I finish proofing the other chapters.

Nathan Butler
03-20-2005, 08:03 PM
Update:

My brain is melting, but...

Everything but the chronology appendix has been proof-read. I've discovered a few things I've forgotten or thought I'd added that I need to add now.

Those include:

CHARACTERS
Kiran
Triina Asante
Krastor Veda
Danad Balas
Zallaron Kell
Mortacorr
Jaliib Conur
Possible inclusion of entries for 2S's three swoopies, though it's doubtful

Yeah, somehow I forgot those or figured I'd done them, but I'd only put in placeholders. So once those are done and I give the "Severed Dream / Dream Reborn" entry another look-over and add its events to the Chronology, I'll proof just those new items and begin finalizing page numbers and the table of contents. After that, it's a matter of checking the images to make sure they're correct, then spitting out the final PDF.

EDIT: Removing stuff as I finish it.

Nathan Butler

Looks like we're down to just Kiran and Triina, then double-checking the chronology appendix!

I MAY go back and add in profiles for some minor characters and groups, but those will be fast. Like Zantos Toran, whom no one here's ever heard of, but who plays a major role as a bounty hunter in sparking some of our characters' backstories into motion. Not sure yet, though.

And, an update:

Everything except for "Appendix I: Chronology" is 100% complete. The complete pages, including cover and such, comes to 111 total pages. I'll be editing on the Chronology appendix tonight and hopefully inserting it to bring the total up to 119 pages for the final count.

I may have missed this somewhere, but will it only be available as a PDF file, or will there be an actual hardcover edition as well?

Hopefully it'll be well-received. This bugger's been a long time coming. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

I'd put it out sooner but I don't want to spoil Everything Changes.

...so when do we get Volume II: Betrayed Federation/Later Anthology Bits? style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif

Heh, probably when someone else writes one. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif

Nah, I don't know that I'm going to do any more. I thought about it, but after how long this one took, I may not. I mean, to cover No Way Out would mean covering all of Lawg Skrak's tales, which is something I'm not really competent in, and To Overcome doesn't have much in the way of info for profiling.

That's why I made it the "Rayzur's Edge Audio Guidebook," rather than the old name, the "Fanworks Core Universe Sourcebook, Volume I."

Well, I'd be perfectly up to writing my own material if it could be made to look nice by someone with those sorts of skillz.

If I was given all the info to go in it, plus any relevant artwork, I could certainly format it and make a cover sure.

The Lawg Skrak Sourcebook.

hmmmm...

Actually I'm not sure I'd be qualified to write that one either. So much stuff.... style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohwell.gif

I'm so embarrassed, my art compared all of the others just seems like... something the cat dragged in I suppose. I really like the look of this, you did a wonderful job Nathan! You like to stay busy, it would appear! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/y.gif

And here most people are saying that the Kolesar and Hodges work are what they thought looked coolest...

Well, you can hear him in the recent SWD:SE #4 and will hear him in the Celebration 3 stuff from ROTO.

Not sure about CR. Like I said, he's sorta vanished. No contact when I've tried recently. : shrug :
