I predict that mindkind will already or be on the verge of extinction, unless we change something now. It has been predicted the world will "die" in the year 2050. That is a VERY short time from now. Unless we start making changes now, it's alll going to be over. Now I realize many people say "Oh well what do they know? How can they predict what's going to happen?". Well the fact is, they can look at our trends and our % of rescource consumption etc. And from that, they can predict when we will use up all our natural resources. Well that time is coming, 2050 and the world as we know it, will end. We have 48 years, a blink of an eye, not even one life time, until we see if their right or not.

I can predict myself that ~year 2030-2040 a world wide crises will be pronounced. Then people will scramble about, grabbing what they can to save their own exsistance, hosting enviornmental campaigns, etc. That's all fine and dandy, except for that they will be too late. The damage will be done and we'll be too far a long to reverse it. A grim outlook I know, I think it is too, however, I refuse to be deluded in my own ignorance and say that something like that will not happen. People need to open their eyes for a change and see the real world and see what damage they have caused it.

Yes, I was told it was a complicated movie that was difficult to understand.

It was overhyped shiiite. Brad Armpitt was there only to distract us. A simple ploy, yet very annoying.
A bit like Boba Fart : very pointless.

And where was the sexy lady, eh? Where was Jenifer Aniston?!?

It was a good movie and Brad Pitt was alright. I don't think it was over hyped, sorry no sexy lady something the movie missed. Did you see the movie?

I don't believe Boba Fett was pointless, Palpatine sat in a chair the whole time talking with a hopeful scary voice that gets him nowhere.

Actually, the Mayan calender (one of the best and most accurate calenders ever) predicts the end of the world to be on a specific day, I think it says it will be on some day in September 2012 or 2013.

Honestly, I think this whole situation with Iraq could lead to a nuclear war, or at least a war using some kinds of weapons of mass destruction, and it could possibly mean the end, or near destruction, of civilization. Hopefully that won't happen.

Handothrawn
08-22-2002, 08:50 AM
The mayan calendar stops on December 25th 2012, and it doesn't say anything about the world ending, it just...stops. Which can mean one of two things, the world ends, or they foresaw thier culture would be all but extinct by that time, and continuing the calendar would be pointless.

But by 2099, I believe the world governments will be cloning hotdogs, I mean think of the possibilities. It would mean the end of world hunger. Hotdogs would become so numerous they'd become an internationaly excepted currency. Twenty-five hotdogs would equal roughly one american nickel. :look:

I won't be around and my kids (which I don't have yet) probably won't so it really doesn't matter to me. I predict there will only be about half as many countries as there are now, because the larger will envelop the smaller (Darwin was a pretty smart guy). Massive famines and another plague, not the crap we have like AIDS or ebola or West Nile, I mean something major, will wipe out between 20 and 30% of the world's poplulation, with Africa and Asia being hit the hardest. There will be more wars, somebody will get nuked, probably the U.S. because it's run by a pack of sissies, and some company will figure out a super-cheap alternative to the use of fossi fuels. Use of paper will become almost obsolete. If we make it through all the wars and death, I think we will be a lot better off. The next 50 years will decide the next 250.

I am pretty certain people are on the way to creating their own destruction, for all of Vyndim's reasons and more. WW3, IMO is within five years of occuring. It will be spawned from the war on terrorism. Communist and Terror supporting countries are all connected by one thing, hate for American culture. Its my opinion that the Beast of Revelation is a metaphor for the American military, the Bible speaks of the Beast destroying whole armies, and toppling governments, and the second Beast said to rise is again a metaphor for the Armies of terror.

OK, now I've freaked myself out.

But the moral is, put your head between your legs and kiss your butt.

I can predict myself that ~year 2030-2040 a world wide crises will be pronounced.

About 7 years ago, we had a discussion about the actual year. *It took all day and the pub was getting pretty rowdy by the end. *We started with 6 end ended up with 20 people all giving their input. *2027 was the result.

But I think I'll move it foward to 2022-23 - the environment's decay is accelerating a lot faster than we thought. *

The mayan calendar stops on December 25th 2012
The myan's refered to it as the end of the current lifecycle. *What gets me is the accuracy and intricacy of the calendar itself - 3 wheels of precise sizes, rotating within each other. *Given they also built their ziggurats with 365 steps, I wouldn't discount them.

Russia v Israel - it'll be a proxy war if anything. *Russia's just signed a huge financial deal with Iraq and the Saudi's are being sued by the US. *It could happen.

I think the Earth Summit in Johannesburg will be the decider. *If it's just more pushing *style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/censored.gif *around a table then we're definitely *style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/censored.gif

I predict a golden age. Science is on the verge of delivering us unprecedented freedoms. We will be masters of our environment, and our bodies. Sickness will become a rarity, and further an absurd urban legend. Famine and labour will be wiped out as advances in quantum technology deliver us unlimited materials and foods from nothing more than carbon. It will be an utterly alien world, for no other reason than we are incapable today of envisioning such a utopian global state. Definitions of what it is to live, and love, and enjoy life will be completely rewritten.

I am an optimist. People of all Earth's ages have cried doom, and to what end? I live in hope and trust. It's hard sometimes, but humanity is not so self-destructive a species as we would like to believe we are.

JediBendu
08-23-2002, 02:37 AM
isn't a pessimist just a realistic optimist?

We have to get through this hump first to allow science to flourish - we're too held back by outdated morals which are prevelant in the highest offices in every country.
I agree with you Grim, and I do hope we can make to see what science can do.
But we can't even get an agreement on stem cells research that could save millions, let alone the complete control and manipulation of the genome.
Personally, I want nanotech in every one of my cells, rebuilding, repairing and coming up with new combinations of dna that will (as an example) re-enforce the cell lining with a silicate polymer so I can survive vacuum.

...ok that's probably just me.

Grim Jackal

style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif Absolutely, and it's only the beginning, a small imagining of endless possibilities! We're no longer confined to our forms, nor even our minds. I can scarcely imagine what all the furries (of which I include myself) will do with that technology once it becomes free and simple to utilise.

It's just an exciting time to be alive, perhaps not as much so for the cynical. It's all happening so fast now, which is both the problem and the solution.

Edit: because "combined to our forms" doesn't make much sense.

JediBendu

We're no longer confined to our forms, nor even our minds.

We're more confined then ever. I suppose I'm a bit bias considering I have a degree in Science, but there's a whole heap out there who can still remember the horse and cart as a viable means of transportation. War with Iraq, war with terror. It'll all lead to WWIII as I've already said. Iraq will end up launching some sort of bioweapon or nuclear weapon as a retaliatory strike after our troops enter their country. Iraq will rally all anti-american countries to its cause, and the UK and much of Europe will fall into the war on American sides. The Doctor
02-26-2003, 10:43 AM
What I don't understand is the assumption that the future is going to be so much different than now. I mean there are still people alive today who can remember 1900, the world is not all that different.
Technologically obviously the world is more advanced but I don't think there have been many dramatic changes in the way we look at the world.
So here is the Doctor's prediction for the year 2099:
Flying cars, but people will still do burnouts, or the eqivalent of. (Grim wants credit for this one, he can have it, but I retain the movie rights)
Possibly body altering but in general people will feel silly doing anything too bizzare.
I don't think the world is going to end anytime soon, after what we've put it through recently combined with the fact that we are actually trying to stop the damage we've done I think the good old environment will keep chugging along for a while yet.
As for war, all this talk of WW3 is foolish methinks... wars have always been based on the idea of two sides trying to gain territory, infantry trying to win ground... modern weaponry makes all that pretty irrelevant. These days bombs and covert ops make any 'front line' irrelevant. Though that does mean that if there is a major war (and if the iraq thing does happen that will be more of a police action, like afghanistan) it could only end in total defeat of the enemy (The enemy is of course always the loosing side, the winner is never the enemy), however I doubt world powers would go to such lengths.

If anything dramatic does change, and I don't think it will for a while yet, I think we are entering more of an expansionist period. If we do soon begin to 'reach for the stars' (to use a horrible cliche) then I think that politics and relations as we know them will dramatically change.

and now to move away from my foolish gibbering I would like to present someone elses much more accurate predictions (read: foolish gibbering)
Aspects of the Future (http://www.brunching.com/futurethings.html)
Useful predictions (http://www.brunching.com/predictions.html)

I predict that America will drop some more atomic bombs which should throw the earth off orbit and depending on which drection we are pushed we will either burn or freeze. We could probably survive if the earth froze though.

Either that or America will drop some more atomic bombs and annihilate aproximately 80% of the Earth's entire population. The remaining 20% will be forced to spend about 10 years or more in underground bunkers and caves while the dust settles and the earth begins to recover. Due to all the radiation, it is likely that the remaining people will be infertile and the human race will die out.

And everyone though the aliens would get us first.

I think that humanity will survive the century, probably very much in a similar manner to the current situation; with all our fears and problems still intact, and still impotent to work them out in a sane enough manner.
The question really is how many wars and years of strife do we have ahead of us between now and then...

As long as 'living for the day' does no harm to the possiblilities for future generations to also 'live for the day', then that's fine.
What's not fine is the 'who cares' attitude adopted by many individuals (and governments) who wage war, pollute, and undermine these possibilities.

i think there's a good quote about time from red vs blue that goes:

"i am the past, where things cost less, and people knew the value of a hard day's work, but they only lived to be 28 years old!"

"and i am the future, where people have no morals and no emotions, but we have a bunch of kickass gadgets!"

"and i'm the present, whuch sucks. we have nothing cool, and also no morals"

sorry if i offened anyone earlier, it was just one of those nights where everything sucked

What do you mean by that?

It's from a song by Tenacious D...

It's from the song Wonderboy...(except he says Kyle, and since we don't have a Kyle in here, I picked someone)

We will either be at war with something (a country or something we meet in space) or just recovering from a war
