I liked that we got quick glimpse of alot of characters, basically an introduction.

I quite enjoyed this first chapter by way of introduction, i am looking forward to the others now, when we get more into the story line.
I do find it a little hard to have that feeling of awe when it is attached to cartoons. But i did have the right sound effects, the classic SW swipe, and some cool visuals.
I noticed all the Jedi Fighters had different color patterns, seems each pilot gets to decorate their own craft.. ok how fanboy was that? style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blush.gif

It's working fine now on Hyperspace, finnally after all the complaints, the made it non-streaming, now my only complain is, there is nooo way, 480x320 it's "Super SIZE" "High QUALITY", I thought we were going to get a lot more than that crappy resolution.
Well now concerning the episode, I liked it but damn it's short, you just start getting on it and then bam it's over, I guess since this one is the intro that's why we didn't get that much dialogue, one thing I didn't like was Obi-Wan and Yoda just stay there with a mad face and have to accept what palpatine says?? c'mon I'm sure Yoda would try to get his point across. Well overall it's looking good, i'm looking forward to the others.

Not bad - quite creative "camera work" and Obi Wan's voice is excellent.
Mr "Palpatine" Burns twiddling his skeletal hands like he was a witch from the Wizard of Oz may not have been my first choice.

I just watched it, and I liked it very much.
I don't see how it was so bad, I mean it is a cartoon, so of course it looked like....a cartoon. I think some of us are too used to computer animation.
I really hope that they dig deeper into the Obi-Wan/Anakin relationship.
Padme did look a bit....wierd. Like a little girl perhaps, but Anakin seemed pained to leave her. I thought his face showed a lot.
I'll watch part 2 and give more input. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/saber.gif

I just watched it. There were a couple cool moments, but on the whole I thought it was pretty cheesy. Especially the way Anakin threw his cloak off before he got in his fighter, and the whole deal with Anakin putting his hand on the canopy and Padme putting hers on her window. How trite can you get.
Who did the voices? They sound pretty close to the original actors, even though the sound quality was pretty bad.
Does anyone know why the picture quality is so poor? You'd think that it would be better on the official site.

I thought it should have been 30 minutes long, that's my main gripe. I was never fond of the idea of making it 5 minutes. There's no point to it.
Overall, it was good and the action was really fun to behold. The animation looks grand and whimsical in a way. The moment between Obi-Wan, Yoda and Palpatine sets up the personal conflicts of EP3 flawlessly.
The Anakin and Padme scene was a little cheesy and childish for my tastes. But I still can't wait for Chapter 2.
Nathan Butler
11-09-2003, 08:09 PM
Personally, I don't think it would have the same appeal if it were 30 minutes. Most cartoons these days, particularly those on CN, have a tendency to be, well, crappy. They drag on and seem to be aimed at an even younger age group than the old Transformers and G.I.Joe toons were. I mean, just look at Transformers from the 1980s compared to Transformers Armada.
At 3 minutes (no, not 5), or 3:44 in this episode's case, you get a nice thump forward each time, storytelling without a lot of excess, and the sort of "serialized" feel of the programs that Lucas originally said he based SW on in the first place.
As for the Anakin / Padme bit, for me, that was the best moment. The build-up was well done, with Anakin's ship lifting off alongside the tower, and the resigned looks on their faces were true to the characters' nature in how they're dealing with their "forbidden love," while having Anakin be the one to turn away with the overtly sad look plays well into his "grew up too fast" maturity issues, as seen in AOTC.
I, for one, am going to be very happy when I can take the files of all of the episodes and connect them in QT Pro for one, nice, hour-long viewing.

But come on, you have to admit that the "hand on the canopy/hand on the window" thing was a real obvious cliche.

Nathan Butler
11-09-2003, 09:44 PM
There's a difference between an effectively-used cliche and an ineffectively-used cliche. That one was used effectively, and it's also something that has very little precedent in SW. Something that subtle, cliche or not, is not usually the SW style. The only truly obvious part about it was that once one hand went up, the other would. Stylistically, the use of action without words in that instance was fairly surprising, given Tartakovsky's style and that of SW in general.

cliches are cliches for a reason. It was a simple gesture and considering the time of the cartoon, it worked perfect because the meaning was obvious. The cartoon is highly stylized, no need to add complicated gestures and hidden meanings.
Justin
11-09-2003, 09:50 PM
I think that scene could very well had the same (or greater) impact if they had just looked meaningfully at each other without putting their hands up like that. I think that is one of the dumbest movie cliches out there.
It will be neat if they do delve deeper into the romance than what we saw in the movie, as long as they don't include anymore cheesy bits like the hand-on-the-glass thing.
Darth Darthy
11-09-2003, 09:52 PM

Anyway, I thought it was really cool but it did seem to be aimed towards the kiddies. I mean that's okay but that'd be great if they made a really serious SW cartoon with great animation that was meant for teens and adults. I'd love it.

Because there's never really been a succesful SW cartoon. I think for the most part this is just a test, to see how good it can be, and it's a little something to hold the fans over for Episode 3.

As far as the length goes...a theory.
I think this is just sort of a "test" thing they're doing. To see if people are into the idea of the show and possibly other shows. Technically it is one big story in little 3 minute segments. If they work well, they'll probably do something more or something else on a bigger scale but why take the chance, spend ALL that money and make a cartoon that bombs? Perhaps those scars of Radioland Murders and Howard the Duck, etc are still fresh in the mind? He's not above failure of course but I think these cartoons are a test but not JUST a test, much like how the Special Editions doubled as both an upgrade for the old versions and a test for the Prequel effects to see how they worked, how people responded, and what to change.

I see your point. Cartoons are big right now and I think they could make Clone Wars, Jedi purge, and Luke's Jedi Academy interesting to Non-SW fans as long as they stay away from the Slap-stick style cartoon.(driods and ewoks) GT has great arttistic style(Modern) and Hundreds of stories can be told about wars. If this does good enough you can dam bet we will see a regular show. Lets just hope they don't over do it. When bevis and butthead were on Liquid Television they kept you wanting more. 3 years later you could't turn to Mtv without seeing the same BS B&B episode. Mtv knows how to wear something out. I still have bad dreams of Puck and Pedro.

"I just don't see any logic in making it 3 minutes. There's really no point to it. I don't understand why that was the decision."
Another issue was marketing. CN has been floundering in its prime time slots for a while now, ever since soon after the Armada and MOTU premiere fuss blew over. They need something to draw people to their REGULAR programming, rather than dropping programming. For CN, little snippets to draw in SW fans is something they could ill afford to pass up.
