There are many threads on here discussing various movies and books, but I could find any discussing regular monthly comic titles.
There's gotta be some other comic readers out there besides me.
We're in an odd situation with comics and movies at the moment. There have never been more comics being turned into films than there are right now. Not just The Hulk & X-Men but League of Ex Gentlemen etc. Odd when you consider that the actual source material has never sold so badly.
I've got the figures in front of me and the best selling comic for July 2003 was Batman (#617) which sold 146,000 world wide sales. A decade or more ago that figure would have been 500,000!
Anyways, there has got to be a few Senator out there still getting your monthly fix of comic goodness and this is your new home to talk about them.
All kinds of comic discussion is welcome with three guidelines:
1/ No SW comics - that belongs in the EU section of the board.
2/ This isn't a slag-off-other-people's-taste-in-comics-and-prove-yours-is-better-thread. It's just for comic lovers to talk about what they've bought this month.
3/ Spoilers. If you're gonna give away the plot of a new / current issue of a title then please give a warning. Discussing the ending of Watchmen is fine - it's 16 years old, but folks might not want to learn the twists of their current reading BEFORE they've read it.
A few things to kick us off:
1602
Any one else reading '1602'? It's Neil Gaiman's take on the pre-1969 Marvel universe but relocated to the time of the last days of Queen Elizabeth I in England. I picked up the first issue against my better judgement because I've never got on with Mr G's work on Sandman, but I'm enjoying this little mystery plenty.
Secret Shame
What's your secret shame? The comic you can't give up. Mine is the Avengers. I remember paying 5 pence (around ten cents) for issue 108 when I was about 7. And even though I know I should give it up I've bought most (not all!) of the issues since then. The recent Red Zone story was quite nice though.
Magneto
So the master of magnetic mayhem is alive. Hands up all those who knew that Morrison wouldn't be able to resist a Maneto story before he quits the title next spring?
Best 23 pages ever?
What's the best single issue of any title that you've ever read?
Dash to the nearest phone booth, comic fans, it's time to put those multi-coloured tights on over your clothes.
I love you all.

I havn't been reading much of anything new lately, I tried reading the new Ultimate X-men and Spiderman series but I just couldn't get into them, tried picking up on Uncanny again, just isn't the same book.
Although I've been picking up the re-issues of Marvel and DC comics and those are wonderful, loved reading the first issues of X-men and Hulk as cheesy as they are.
I don't really have a favorite comic, the first comic I remember buying was the issue right after Spidey first got the Alien Symbiont suit, I bought the Superman: Day of Doom #1 that day too.

I bought some of the 'Essential' series of Marvel reprints. They're pretty good value. The downside is they're black & white on crappy paper but you get a lot of reprint issue for your buck. (Or pound in my case.)

Yes they have those at the local comic shop here, they're cheap, they got alot of issues in them, but they also got reprint TPB's (with about 6-10 issues a piece) of fully colored issues of X-men, Hulk, Fantastic Four etc. etc.
I read whatever Justin is reading style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif Right now he's reading Batman comics, Powers, and all the Ultimate series. so... I am too! lol

I personally feel Uncanny X-men, Batman(Jim Lee) and the Ultimates are some of the best comics out right now. I've been an X-men fan for over 20 years and think Uncanny is the best it's been in a few years.

Well I haven't really been reading comics as much lately as I had been in the past. I used to read Flash and Green Lantern religiously, and often read Superman and the Batman titles. Almost always bought Batman trade paperbacks.
Then for some reason after Hal Jordan (THE Green Lantern) was dragged through the mud by Ron Marz, Green Lantern was less interesting, although I still read it. Kyle Rayner is little more than a Wally West clone. I stopped reading it when it became all pro-gay propaganda. And recently Flash has sucked so I stopped reading that as well.
Then I picked up the first issue of Powers, and that is the most incredible comic series I've ever read. It consistently kicks ass.
I had been reading Detective Comics when Rucha was writing it (I don't remember his first name), because he is a great crime writer, and the Batman stories he wrote in Detective were fantastic. I bought the Bruce Wayne: Murderer? and Bruce Wayne: Fugitive trades because that was a really good story-arc. Then when Rucha left the title I stopped reading it.
For those of you who don't know, Powers follows two detectives who are assigned to Superhero-related homicides. It's fascinating, it has intricate plots, great characters, and the dialogue is great, the mix of humor, action and drama is some of the best I've ever read.
Anyway, I have been reading that on a monthly basis ever since. I recomend it to everyone.
I didn't jump on the whole Ultimate Spider-Man bandwagon when it first came out, but then recently (two or three months ago) I said "what the hell" and bought the first trade paperback collection of issues 1-6.
Then I bought the second and third collections. Then the fourth and fifth. And now I reserved it to get it monthly through my local comic shop. It is a fantastic book.
I also picked up The Ultimates first collected editions and all of the Ultimate X-Men trades as well. They are great comics, and it's nice to be able to read Marvel comics that aren't hampered by thirty years of continuity. I never read Marvel before, and now I read all the Ultimate books.
I will probably read the Ultimate Fantastic Four when it comes out, because I am a big fan of Brian Michael Bendis, and have enjoyed Mark Millar's work on the Ultimates and Ultimate X-Men, because they are writing it together.
I also started reading the Batman monthly when Jeph Loeb and Jim Lee took it over, because I read an interview with Loeb and I liked the direction he was taking with Batman. I liked Jim Lee's art on it, but that's the reason I bought them, although it seems like that is the reason everyone else did. I read comics mostly for good storytelling, the art is secondary.
I'm sure no one read that post because it was so long.

I've got subscriptions to The Spectacular Spiderman lines and to Daredevil, or perhaps I should say Daredevil and Spiderman, since Daredevil is better. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif
I think Bendis is the best thing to happen to Daredevil since Miller, the stories are great issue to issue, I remember older ones that were depthless and dull.
Most of my monthly reads are from Marvel, the only DC character I ever really got into was Batman, and I never liked Superman except the Doomsday storyline, he had too many powers otherwise.
I haven't checked out 1602 yet, is it any good?

I agree with you about the Ultimates line.
I was a bit suspicious at first, like you I think. I didn't buy Spiderman etc. But when they started The Ultimates (ie The Avengers) by Mark Millar I figured I'd give it a go. It's great. I'm also reading the Ultimate Six. And like you will; start buying the Ultimate Fantastic Four in December.

Okay guys, we've all listed some of the stuff we're reading at the moment.
But to return to a question posed before.
You're trapped on a desert island. You can only have ONE comic or one storyline to read and keep you company.
So what is the single best / most entertaining issue (or story line) of a comic book that you have ever read?

It would preferably be some classic Superman, if not that then maybe Batman, even X-men, Spidey, or Hulk. Anything that's classic basically, but I always liked classic Superman comics.

I especially enjoyed the sequence where Hawkeye took down Kraven.
"Thor, would you please round up Mr Kraven?"
"No."
"Hawkeye?"
"I really don't want to waste the hardware."
"Please."
Which really sums up what the Ultimates line is about.

For back issues try downstairs in Comic Showcase (on Charing Cross Road) it's only open certain hours - the downstairs closes around 5 I think.
There's also a small new place opened that's run by a young Chinese guy (very helpful) in Old Compton Street. It's on the left as you walk from the Charing Cross Road end. It looks like its a seedy sex shop! Cos you have to go downstairs, but sadly it's not! It just comics & quite a selection of back issues. Try there.

"Marvel Comics announced on Wednesday that Ultimate Fantastic Four #1, which reaches stores on Friday, will have a print run of more than 200,000 issues.
"This is the first time in years that a new, ongoing series has launched so impressively," said Diamond Comic Distributors president and CEO Steve Geppi.
The issue is written by Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Millar, with art by Adam Kubert and a cover by Bryan Hitch. "

I love comics!
I mainly read Vertigo stuff -
The Invisibles was Morrison's best work IMO. I wasn't so keen on the last volume, but the rest of the series was totally amazing. Creepy, funny, and stylish.
I also like things like:
Hellblazer
Swamp Thing
Preacher
Sandman
Lucifer
really, anything by Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman, Jamie Delano, Peter Milligan and Garth Ennis.
Other than Vertigo titles, I've also liked Bryan Talbot's Luthor Arkwright books, X-statix (absolutley hilarious!), New Xmen (some great, some no so great), Incal, Metabarons, and a host of gothy comics from SLG and Oni (Gloom Cookie, Nightmares and Fairy Tales, Serenity Rose, Courtney Crumrin etc.). And some Andi Watson.
And I've read lots of Star Wars stuff too style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif

I found The Invisibles hard going when it was coming out. I appreciated it a lot lot more when I went back in after it had finished and was able to read a whole volumn at a time.
Morrison's website has some funny stuff on it too.

Cheers Darth! I'll go check it out...
I know what you mean about The Invisibles - I think sometimes reading a volume is btter, and vice versa. Reading Shade the Changing Man in one lump, I think I would have preferred it serialised, for instance.
I generally prefer reading story arcs as a lump, often becasue I hate the wait between issues!
I'm reading Age of Bronze right now, which is a fantastic comic bout the Trojan War, but only 3/4 issues come out a year...
And the author is planning to make about 50 issues!
It takes a lot of patience style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

Definitely The Doll's House Trade - absolutely blew me away (I wasn't hugely impressed by the first, but the second...)
Met Neil Gaiman once at a booksigning - we were about third in the line and there was an enormous queue behind, but he still took about ten minutes speaking to us! Really nice guy. Signed loads of stuff - even drew a little picture of Morpheus on our issue 50 (all black cover).
Also really liked A Game of You though...
Favourite Preacher has to be the second one too - shocking, touching, full-on style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif
Have you read any Peter Milligan or Jamie Delano?
What do you think of Swampy and John Constantine?

Go right ahead Tril.
You can discuss ANY comics related topic, old or new as far as I am concerned.
Are you refering to Stan 'The Man' Lee's re-imaginings (what a bollocks word that is) of Superman etc?

Surely the worst crime laid upon comics this century (including that awful film of From Hell)...
How can they change a middle-aged British guy who looks like Sting in to Keanu Reeves???

The very worst crime (IMHO) is changing the setting from the UK to the US. What's the bloody poing of making it at all then?
As for 'From Hell' the film - I enjoyed it. You have to approach it as being NOTHING to do with Uncle Alan's series at all I think.

I loved Swampy - possibly my favourite comic!
I know Alan Moore tends to go off on a pseudo-mystical rant every once in a while, but I really enjoy it style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif
I know a few people have been put off Promethea because of this same reason, but I love it! Really in-depth.
Haven't read Y the Last Man yet but have heard good things- do you recommend?
Fables is fantastic! Really enjoying that.
Love 1602 too! Quite quirky. Not too knowledgeable about the Marvel universe though, so I'm struggling to know a few characters (who is dr. Strange?).
Haven't read the other things you've mentioned, although I have heard good things about Thirty Days of Night too. Is dark days the sequel? And weren't there rumours of a film?
Seems a bit like the Thing with vampires; and that's not a bad thing!

Dr Strange is Marvels main magic character.
Cheesy 1960s Origin:
He was an arrogant Doctor until a car crash scrwed up his ability to operate and he became a down-and-out. Then he travelled the world for a cure eventually finding The Ancient One in Tibet where he learned magic.
His modern character is pretty much just as he appears in 1602 - except that he's American and lives in Greenwich Village New York instead of Greenwich, London (where I am.)

there is a film that is in the works for 30 days of night, you should pick it up, its quite good the trade is not that expensive, Dark Days is the sequal, i like it.
if anyone likes 30 day i highly recommend WAKE THE DEAD, the art work is amazing, and written by the same guy who wrote 30 days steve niles...
he has been given offers to make a wake the dead, movie as well as a criminal macrabe movie which is another of his comics, ive only read a few of criminal macrabe, but i'm going to wait till it comes out in trade.
i cant stretch it enough that if anyone likes the vertigo label and stuff they put out READ - Y the last man- please... for the love of all that is holy!!!
does anyone like punisher, ?the movie trailer looks like crap i heard the guy who wrote it doesnt know anything about punisher.
what does everyone think?
doea anyone enjoy hellboy? what do you think of the movie? it looks very good. true to the story.
oh yes, i almost forgot, what does everyone think of kevin smiths run of dardevil.....or spiderman and black cat.?. i cant get enough, i really enjoy his writting, and it is always refreshing. his dardevil visionaries he did blew me away... i think its the best run on daredevil since mark miller... and if you never have read daredevil, its ok, youll still understand it,
however, thats not the story on green arrow, i have never been a fan of the arrow which is green , and he wrote it for the fans so i was lost the whole time..

From Hell was an excellent film, but it wasn't really based on Alan Moore's graphic novel. Originally they set out to make an adaptation, but the filmmakers realized when they were doing research into the actual killings and everything surrounding it that they wanted to go in a different direction. I thought they did a magnificent job.

Well they did. "From Hell" was a fictionalized account of the Jack the Ripper murders, it wasn't really based on Moore's graphic novel other than the name and some of the characters, but those characters existed in real life anyway.
Like I was saying, originally the studio wanted to do an adaptation of the graphic novel, but the filmmakers abandoned that idea in favor of an original film based on the Jack the Ripper murders.

Never used the net for comics. I'm in London so rather spoiled for shops.
I've never tried any of these, but the following are www comic shops based in the UK that have good word of mouth.
www.comic-biz.com
(Advance order titles & subscriptions etc. Well known)
www.comicana.com
(The www of Might World of Comicana)
www.acecomics.co.uk
(Boasts about their advance comic service)
www.chaoscitycomics.com
(Award winning order site)
If you try any of them out, please let me know how you get on.

I know what it's like to have store troubles - I've just moved from the east coast of Britain to the west coast, and I still use the same shop for their mail order!
It's called Abstract Sprocket - I think the address is www.abstractsprocket.com, and they're really good. Friendly, efficient, and you get 10% off anything if you arrange a standing order.

Is anyone else reading X-Statix? I just finished the 'Back from the Dead' storyline. Great fun! Inbetween the jokes and subversion it really captures the presence of the media in our lives today.
One brilliant moment after a character is killing from beyond the grave if anyone starts humming their song, someone says: 'It's just like that Japanese movie that Hollywood remade,', to which Venus and Dead Girl shout: 'Seven Samurai!'
Also just reading the new Hellbazer. I love Mike Carey's Lucifer - at it's best it is as good as the Sadman, IMO. His Hellblazer has those moments of excellence as well, though sometimes he doesn't hit the mark here.
Never mind - I think it's still the best this comic's been since Jenkins left.
Maybe perhaps since Ennis...
What I really like is his use of cameos; old bit parters like Gary Lester turning up; Swampy appearing ever othr issue or so; etc. the last issue had Lucifer and Tim Hunter too (I think the bit with Tim was the best part of the last few issues).
What is everyone else reading?

I think it's Morrison's last storyline (?). Only read one issue so far. It started suddenly set in the future where everything is screwed up - like a Morrison version of Chris Clarmont's famous DAYS OF FUTURE PAST from X-Men issues 120 and 121 (if memory serves).
I have two more issue of it here to read - I'll report back.

Just finished the last Hellblazer: fantastic!
Carey really made an engrossing story there; really felt the futility and horror of the characters. What made it great was the cameos - Swampy, Tim Hunter and Lucifer showing up. And it was great to see Chas again (who has bee underused until Carey arrived).
My only complaints:
The initial twist was a little predictable
The bad guy swore too much and used language that was too modern for an Edenic villain.
No I'll get on with 1602 issue 7!

It was ok, although I thought it lacked some of the appeal of the first issue. I'm not mad on the new origin - that 'Fly' style teleportation device instead of their space voyage... but there ya go.

Well I just spent more money than I should have. I picked up:
Twisted Toyfare Theatre Volume 2
Ulitmate Fantastic Four #3
Return of the Jedi: Infinities #3
Formerly Known as the Justice League Collected Edition
The Flash #207
Batman: Gotham Knights #50 (because it had a cool cover)
Batgirl #47-49
Batman #324
I haven't read Flash in a long time, and the cover art looked cool and promised a new direction, so I decided to check it out. One of the first comics I ever bought was an issue of The Flash, back in 1991, and then I subscribed to it for about seven years, but then the new creative team at the time kind of sucked so I quit.
Same thing happened with Green Lantern, but that still sucks so I'm not going to pick that up again anytime soon, unless they bring back Hal Jordan as Green Lantern.

Ultimate FF #3 SPOILERS
I enjoyed this much more than the previous issue. Back to the fun level of the first. And finally (not that I minded) they get there powers.
Cripes - Moles Man made a bit of a quick transformation in page terms - he only left at the end of last issue. And it was rather fluky / contrived that of all the places Sue Storm could have turned up - she was found by him.
Plus Points - General sense of fun. Lovely visuals - especially the sequence where the Thing (my fav) wakes up. Working in the Earth, Wind, Earth, and Fire stuff - seeing the FF as elemental forces.

Just read the Son of Man Hellblazer trade, which was good horrid fun. Typical Ennis.
Also read the Haunted trade too, which I actually really liked, which was a surprise because I'm not too keen on Warren Ellis, and didn't like his other 'blazers.
Just finished the new Fables issue too; that series is just great!
yeah i love fables, i only read by trades though, and dude if you like fables, may i recommend" y the last man" , this is seriously one of the best comics i have EVER read, and thats saying something, the first 3 trades are out right now.
i picked up a french comic called "blacksad" wizard magazine did a article on it and thought it looked interesting, and wow! is all i can say the art work=amazing a real piece of art.

^ Cheers for the recommendation! I've heard a lot of people praise 'Y...', but haven't got around to it yet. Will have to do so soon...
Right now I'm choosing which Hellboy trade I wanna get - haven't read any so far, but they look sweet. And I've heard amazing things about the film.

I started collecting in the early '90s when a local comic shop opened near my old house, literally just a few blocks away. From about '91-'93, I was a heavy collector, visiting the store so often the guys eventually got to know me by name. But, I ultimately dropped out because it started getting expensive and there were just too many titles to keep up with. So I've been out of the loop for ten years or so, but I have some questions I hope you don't mind me asking:
1) Is Image's SHADOW HAWK still running? It was one of my favorites, and I always wondered what became of Hawk after he was diagnosed with aids.
2) Has Gotham City since gotten itself back together after the storyline several years ago involving the massive earthquake that supposedly nearly demolished the entire city? Exactly how long did that storyline last, and did Bruce lose Wayne Manor and the Batcave and have to rebuild also?
3) Is it true that Aunt May died a few years ago in the Spider-Man comics? And also that there's been some kind of relaunch where the series went back and started over again from the very beginning, although with some revisions and updates and such?
Thanks. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

In answer to your questions, sir:
1/ No idea. Sorry I never read it.
2/ Yes, predictably Gotham City has rather quickly recovered from that silly storyline. Sleep easy. There was no lasting damage to the Batcave.
3/ Yep, having excaped marrying Doc Oct, Aunt May finally bought the big one a few years back. I think your mention of a series starting over again is a reference to a new spidy series which will "retell" classic 1960s story but with modern comics pacing. This new series is aimed at a younger age group I think, than the mainstream Marvels.
Any more questions, anyone?

I've got one!
Who's going to write New X-Men now Morrison's leaving?
Chuck Austin has taken over with the next issue #155.
Austin is a weird one. Some of his stuff has been terrible and got roundly and rightly slagged off. However, in his defence I have very much enjoyed his first four issue of The Avengers that he's writing.
It's a storyline set in Blighty, and he's tried to make it as close to The Ultimates version of the Avengers as possible while also keeping it mainstream.
I buy the Avengers anyway - a hold over of mad loyality resulting from having brought every issue since #112 which I bought for 5P (five pennies)when I was 5 years old.
Morrison added many many new characters and new ideas to the series in his two year run. I'm afraid now that he's gone, his ideas will be in the hands and at the mercy of lesser talents who will milk them for all they're worth (and more).
I haven't read #155 but apparently comments from the editor on the letters pages about the (not so) secret duel identity of one of the characters from the last storyline (Here Comes Tomorrow) contradicts what Austin writes in the actual issue.
(SPOILER if you have read Morrison's Here Comes Tomorrow... The latest issue of New X-Men confirms that Cassandra and Ernst are one in the same. Well the letter page does...Chuck Austen's story actually contradicts that statement...but I'll let ya'll decide who to believe. I'll go with the editor's comments in the letter page. END SPOILER)
I remain your humble correspondent.
Any more questions?

the best trade to start with is " seed of destruction" this is the book that the movie is based on. it will be a little confusing and isnt my fav. buty its still good.
my fav is the " right hand of doom" and other weird tales which the movie also uses.
the wierd tales are the best you can get them in trades or comics.

The Ultimates finally came out this week after like 3 months.
They are apparently started the sceries over but it will possibly be a few months.
It is a good comic though. Of course, all the Ultimate comics are pretty good especially the FF.

That was a couple of years ago,but I don't know exactly how long ago.
They are cancelling Xtreme Xmen(which I wasn't too impressed with) and adding Astonishing Xmen. They are also sending Xavier to Genosha and restarting an Xcaliber title. Bishop is getting his only detective type title called District X.
I think it needs that every few years to keep it fresh for readers. I guess they try to keep it on top. I have loved the Xmen for years and personally haven't been thrilled with the way it's been lately.
Art teams,etc. are changing too.

Did you like the Grant Morrison run? His presence made me pick up an X-Man comic for the first time in ages and ages.
I enjoyed his run. Although like all Morrison stuff, it's dense and confusing at times. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/scratchchin.gif

Yes, I do love his stuff. I suprisingly wasn't impressed with Chris Claremont's run on Xtreme Xmen. I could not get into it. I think that's why I'm excited about the revamp, although I heard Claremont is switching to Uncanny.
I love both Uncanny and New XMen though.

Has the hew GHOSTBUSTERS comic book from 88MPH launched yet? Even on some of the Ghostbuster message boards, nobody seems to know when it's supposed to launch.
Also, anybody know how the SNAKE PLISSKEN CHRONICLES comic has been doing? I've only seen the second issue and wasn't impressed much by it, even though I'm a big fan of Snake. (Seemed to be mostly an excuse for in-jokes.) style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif

Is that attached image the newest DD? And sorry, but Daredevil is definetly not the poorman's Spidey/Batman. While Spidey and DD are kinda similar, they are like to sides of the same coin. Complete opposites.
But they are both great. And as for Batman, I love the first two movies, but I hate the comics(except for the Knightfall story) DC's stories are just not the same as Marvel's. Marvel is better.

Spacehunter24
04-13-2004, 11:57 PM
Yup, that's the one. It was actually from the early-90s, the time I was into comic books majorally. The whole KNIGHTFALL series started with Batman trying to defend Gotham after everybody escapes from Arkham. Then Bane breaks Batman's back, about midway through, I think. The rest of the series was him trying to recover while Robin and Azrael fill in. The
