I've read the 80-page intro to the Infinity Crisis, which was being sold recently at a local comic book store. Very interesting, but I'm not even going to try to follow every spin-off or series, unless someone has a chart or timeline that I can follow, so I can pick up the relevant issues, etc.
I plan on doing something like that. Somone on the DC message boards has compiled a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet collecting the "Crisis Counseling" features that are posted every Monday by DC to follow the leadin stories to the Infinite Crisis.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>Another by the way, have you all read the "Trinity" trilogy? It's about when Bats and Supes met Diana. Kinda interesting.

It was ok. Kinda screws up continuity a bit, specifically information from JLA: Year One and Batman/Superman: World's Finest in regards to who knew what and when about secret identities.

Back from Comic-con!
Other than some manga I was already intending to buy anyway, I really didn't see anything at that con that would make me want to pick up a new series. When It came to the indie comics, I am already following all the ones that really seem interesting to me, and the mainstream comics are doing more of the same, or shojo, which bores me to death.
Got Tales #24 while I was there, only because I knew my LCS wouldn't have any copies left of the art cover by the time I got home, definitley not the best Tales issue, but at least it didn't leave any loose ends hanging. Got the intro comic signed by Jeremy Barlow after the comics panel style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif
Now feverishly writing my column in the hopes it will be up by the weekend. I may or may not bump the prepared column I had from before I left for it.

Had to pick up my comics today because I was in San Francisco yesterday, and my comic shop closed before I could get back. (Missed out on the best cover for an issue I ended up getting...)
Adventures of Superman #642 (best issue of the "Sacrifice" arc, so far; the big showdown comes up in next week's Wonder Woman and OMAC Project issues, though!)
JSA Classified #1 (missed out on the hot cover of the Power Girl origin issue, but it's an interesting start to an interesting character's origin story--the REAL origin)
Day of Vengeance #4 (narrated by Detective Chimp! Haven't finished it yet, but it's been a decent series, especially with the Superman and JSA tie-ins)
Teen Titans #25 (Superboy and Raven discuss Superboy's soul... hmmm)
Birds of Prey #84 (gotta find out whats up with the Brainiac virus that Oracle's contracted, and will Dinah and Ted get out of Asia?!)
Batman: Gotham Knights #67 (Tommy Elliot vs. Hush? What?! EDIT: Actually, it was Bruce vs. Hush... and he got in some trouble for that!)
And my trade paperback of the week... Star Wars: Clone Wars Volume 6--On the Fields of Battle.

If I remember correctly, in World's Finest Clark and Bruce revealed their identies to each other a few years after they first met. Maybe a couple of years? How would that screw up continuity with Diana? They didn't meet her till some years after revealing to each other their identities. Right...? style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/crazy.gif
In other comic news, I had a need for a good Batman story today, so I went and bought "Broken City". So far it's pretty good. I've also been trying to catch up on Smallville (TV series), and I tell you, there's a world of difference between Clark and Bruce and how they deal with criminals. I admit that I like how Bruce won't hesitate to kick in the teeth of a thug like Killer Croc to get what he needs from him. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/saber.gif [attachmentid=13828] Clark would never do a thing like that, and the contrasts between them really make for a good dynamic when they're together.

It was at least four to six years before they told one another... and I don't know when they met Diana. So I dunno... Just didn't quite seem congruous.

I'm guessing that's actually Broken City (what with the mention of kicking Killer Croc in the teeth). I haven't read it, but from what I've heard, it's either one of the best or one of the worst Batman stories. I dunno, I don't think I'm gonna pick that one up. But good luck with it, I hope you do enjoy it.

Issues 1-3 are in stores now. Issue 4 should hit stores on July 20th. This preview is just to give folks a taste of the series before all 4 issues are available.
And if anyone is interested, they can always order copies from the Viper Comics online store: http://vipercomics.com/shop/shop_categories.asp?cat=4
I'll be at the San Diego Comic-Con this week signing copies of all 4 issues (#4 will be available for purchase at the con!). Go here for more details: http://otisframpton.typepad.com/zombie_mon...n_countd_1.html (http://otisframpton.typepad.com/zombie_monkey_press/2005/07/comiccon_countd_1.html)
And thanks for reading!

Too bad there's nothing there saying that the "comic con exclusive" issue costs FIVE DOLLARS even though the sign on the rack at your booth said all comics were $3! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif
<div align="right">Quoted post</div>
[/b][/quote]
First, it's not MY booth, it's the VIPER COMICS booth, and I had nothing to do with the pricing or the creation of the corresponding price lists at the convention. I'm the creator/writer/artist of "Oddly Normal". If you'd like, I can direct your complaints to the proper person.
Second, I can't believe you're complaining at all. You have 3 ways to read Oddly Normal #1. One of them is the free preview I provided to the public. The second is by buying issue 1 with the normal cover at the regular price of $3 (the same as all other regular Viper comics with standard covers). The third is by buying issue 1 with the con exclusive cover, which was printed in limited numbers for collectors at conventions, and yes . . . it costs a little more because of that.
Bottom line . . . Oddly Normal #1 is available to read for FREE and people still complain. This world is indeed a maddening place in which to live.

Otis, my issue with that is less that the comic is priced two dollars more expensive for merely an alternate cover (even though that is pretty lame...not just in this case but whenever a company does this) but that there was signage on the booth (right under the con exclusive issue) saying all comics were $3 and then being told that it was in fact $5, and my treatment after mentioning this fact (in a non-confrontational manner).
I still paid the five bucks for it (and thanks for signing it for me BTW style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif)

Otis, people are people; most of them are never happy, and will nit-pick and complain about even the best things. I'm guilty of it, but I try not to let myself have that kind of negative outlook on life.
By the way, I'm going to check out your comic series. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ok.gif

Hey whatever man. One of the guys at that booth was rude to me, that's why I was complaining. I was fully prepared to pay the extra two bucks I just thought it sucked that the guy was rude to me after I mentioned that the signage on the booth was misleading.
It's like if you go to McDonalds and on the menu it says a value menu is $4 and after you order it they tell you it is actually $6. Sure it's not that big of a deal but it's not cool either.

Just the one written by Joss W. - Astonishing.
His second story hasn't been as good as the first, but there's always at least some great dialogue to enjoy. Truth be told, I miss Grant Morrison on the X-Men - he actually had some great ideas.

Yes, I agree - I think that's how they're going to bring him back too.
I have mixed feelings about HOUSE OF M so far.
I have enjoyed reading each issue, but so far we've had three issues with about ten pages of story.
The first issue was all set up. The second issue was an introduction to the world - almost a guide book - and while it read well page by page, it hardly moved the actual story forward at all. The whole of the third issue was one long chase sequence with Wolvie. I will certainly stick with it, but I wish that there was a bit more meat on the bones re plot and character - you know what I mean?
Against my initial expectations I am continuing to enjoy YOUNG AVENGERS - and look forward to picking it up every month.
Likewise I must admit that although I did not see the point of trashing the old team at the time, I like THE NEW AVENGERS very much. My frustration with the NEW AVENGERS is that because of BMB's writing style when he is on superhero fare each issue seems a pretty fast read to me. Now that might be because I am enjoying it, but sometimes I wish (again) that there was a bit more meat.

Long story, but I moved from FL to NC. There's not a store up here close, so I have my buddy(who runs a comic shop) ships them to me for a considerable discount once a month.
It's hard to adjust since I used to pick them up every week and was on top of all the stories. This way, I get behind a little. I do have the Batman War Games TPB to tide me over until.
I did go to a bookstore around here and picked up the new Avengers #7. I simply couldn't wait for it! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif

If you don't read anything else, read Wonder Woman #219 and OMAC Project #4 this week. If those two books don't make you say "DAMN" I don't know what will.
BTW, I do plan on updating my blog (http://blogs.starwars.com/JamesTSkywalker) at SW.com with more Infinite Crisis stuff soon, cuz it is going somewhere now. Only two months away!

Hellblazer #210 - still great
Courtney Crumrin special - loving this series, this special looks at Uncle Aloysius as a young sorceror, very good!
Albion #2 - is anyone else reading this? I have no idea who the characters are (from old British cartoons), but I'm loving the mood of the comic.
And sadly, Red Sonja #1 style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blush.gif

I bought the first issue. I thought it was ok. Like you, the characters that they are using were a bit before my time. Uncle Alan is 53 I think, so he read 'em as a kid, but most of 'em were gone by the time I was reading in the 70s.
I thought that the first issue was ok. It felt a little bit like I had seen most of it before actually. ie something suppossedly fictional turns out to be real. Still, I'm happy to still with it and see how it pans out.

Well, she was the character and book of the month on IGN. And they've had a full article and a letters section devoted to her in just a week since that issue.
Anyway, it's Wednesday again, and it's shopping day...
Gotham Cental #33 (Rucka and Brubaker are having fun with this arc, and it was cool to see the Titans show up; I'm really interested to see who's behind this "dead Robin" thing)
Superman #220 (fallout from "The Insiders" and "Sacrifice" stories, plus we get to see John Henry Irons and the Eradicator; it's a Return of Superman reunion!)
Detective Comics #809 (a follow up to last year's "War Games" arc, this one starts out with a bang; great issue, looking forward to the continuation next week)
Justice #1 (very interesting start to this new Alex Ross comic, and fantastic art as always [though Ross isn't the one doing the pencils])
I also bought:
JSA #76
Firestorm #16
Blood of the Demon #6
and
DC Special: The Return of Donna Troy #3
Haven't read those yet, but I'll get to 'em soon.

Just back from FP in town and predictable it was a bit of a bumper bundle. Including...
They had sold out of that Wonder Woman - but I read a battered shelf copy to see what happened. And now I know. Read OMAC #4 too.
Justice #1 - JTS - is this anything to do with the Crisis at DC at all? Lovely art either way.
Manhatten Guardian #3 (of 4) - by Grant Morrison
Secets of the House of M - probably a waste of money but they didn't have #4 yet.
New Avengers #8 - part 2 of The Sentry story.
Astonishing X-Men #11
1602 New World - the follow up to last year's 1602. I felt that the original sereis ended on a wimper rather than a bang last year. This cash-in follow up is written by Geig Pak - if I don't love the first issue then it's off the list.
The Ultimates Vol 2 #7 - nice surprise as I wasn't expecting to find this.
Albion #2 - so far #1 didn't grab me, let's see how this developes.
Off to bed now - will get to read them over Sunday.

Nope, this is Alex Ross's throwback to the old Justice League. It's Elseworlds, and it's all Ross. He loved the Superfriends cartoon back in the day, and it's what he draws upon for ALL of his material nowadays. That said, it's pretty cool to see Lex as the evil genius again; he's cool as the suave evil corporate type, but that's so overdone these days.

Thanks for the info re Ross. I will read anyway.
It was hard for me to really judge the WW issue without much of a context around it. It does seem to me that DC are making their universe more brutal. Is it gonna stay that way do you think? I think I remember reading somewhere that the upsurge in that type of thing was being explained (in story context) by being partly caused by the Avengers-JLA cross over of last year. Is that true? Can you shed any light on that?
Read The Ultimates last night - which great fun.

Well, I haven't read the Avengers-JLA crossover, but I highly doubt that it's in-continuity (most likely either considered an Elseworlds tale or dealt with in Hypertime).
Really, though, Our Worlds at War seems to have been the catalyst for a lot of the edgier and darker tales in the last few years. And the Batman titles have taken that to the extreme in many ways.
But as for the Wonder Woman issues, if you want context, I'll suggest you take a look back at some of her recent storylines, found in:
Wonder Woman #207-211 (the Medousa storyline)
Wonder Woman #212-214 (Wonder Woman, the JLA and the gods deal with the evens of the Medousa storyline)
Adventures of Superman #636 (can be found in the Superman trade paperback That Healing Touch; deals with Identity Crisis, the big comic event of last year)
Wonder Woman #215-218 (Wonder Woman given a task by the gods, leads into #219)
Countdown to Infinite Crisis
The OMAC Project #1-3
Superman #219
Action Comics #829
Adventures of Superman #642
Those last ones (Countdown, OMAC, and the Superman titles) deal directly with the Wonder Woman issue.
I know you got OMAC #4 (and I can assume you also read the previous ones, I dunno). So I hope that steers you in some direction. Obviously, it's not important to read all of those WW issues, but that's her recent history and might give you an idea of a grander context.

The Hawkeye issue of The Pulse was really interesting, I think there should be a House of M: Hawkeye miniseries, because in my opinion he is the most interesting character in the story.
He remembers the truth and is aware that he died, but also remembers the fake House of M life as well and is trying to come to terms with finding out that he is supposed to be dead, and doesn't know if he will still be alive when everything goes back to normal (even though from his point of view he doesn't know if it will or not).

I'd pick up at least Adventures of Superman #642 to go along with it, and read AoS first. Both were written by Greg Rucka, so there's a good sense of continuity between the two stories.
Aside from the fact that they're the final two chapters of "Sacrifice", of course.

Hi cj
I can't recommend it to you. I read it over the weekend and it was a pretty light read and pretty weak.
Let me explain why.
The entire issue had no new ideas or indeed any ideas in it all all. It was just an excuse to see the Hulk fight dinosaurs in the year 1602. By comparison the comic before in my reading pile was the third issue of The Manhattan Guardian written by Grant Morrison as part of his Seven Soldiers epic with artwork by Cameron Stewart. Now I had thought that the first issue of this comic was easily the weakest of the Seven Soldiers series so this comic wasn't exactly my pick of the month, hoever... the third issue is a good solid one-off story. It is set in a West World style science park, where someone reprogrammes all the robots to think that they are terrorists. "The Hollow is modelling a world where everyone is a terrorist. What chance do we have?"
The nice touch is that there are a hundred robot citizens in this village in the exact % (white/black/women/man / etc) that there are people in the world. (An idea Morrison picked from a childen's book I've read.) But what Morrison does with it is to illustrate how a few people are trying to tell everyone else how to runt he world (by invading their countries etc). For example six people (out of the hndred robots) own 59% of the wealth and all six of those people live in North America.
Morrison also twins this main action story with a very personal subplot about the hero getting dumped by his partner. It's a simple enough 22 page comic story but manages to contain several moments and lines that make you think. By comparision, 1602 new World #1 adds nothing new to the established 1602 world and features a long splash pagey fight between the 1602 Hulk and some dinosaurs. That's it.
I'm gonna read the second issue in the shop, (which judging from the first will not take long) and unless it is utterly fantastic I won't buy it and will drop the title.

I just popped out and saw it in the shop - a good thing that I didn't get it by your review! I was disappointed that it wasn't Gaiman for a start, so I decided to leave it because I'm not that keen on Marvel as a rule (X-Men being the exception). It has to be something pretty special ie. Morrison, Gaiman etc. for me to get a Marvel title, so I don't think I'll bother. I'm not at all interested in seeing one big monster fight another style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

That's right Sabrina - they've just finished the Salucemi story, and by the looks of it, the whole Quinlan Vos / Aayla / Pre-RotS storyline. A shame - I really liked those characters, and most of the arc in general, and I really don't think I'm going to be that interested in what they've got planned next style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif
Are they getting rid of Republic along with Tales at the end of the year, or are they carrying it on? If they're scrapping it I may not bother with any more issues.

At the risk of over-plugging myself, since I attended DHCs comics panel all the news is in the "in other news" section of my column from this week (or last, if T has posted the new one) <G>
Basically, everything being published right now is cancelled and will end by January to be replaced with Rebellion, a 5-issue/year series, a comic series tied into KOTOR and something else that hasnt been announced officially yet.
I'll give all the new comics the standard flip test before I decide whether im going to read them monthly or in TPB format.

There are several new series starting next year. Actually, a third (or is it first?) is starting next month. X-Wing: Rogue Leader begins next month, a three-part mini-series that's probably designed as a kickoff for the new ongoing series Rebellion. The other new ongoing series will be titled Knights of the Old Republic (yep, pretty original there! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif). It will be set, shockingly, during the time period of the games of the same name, which were originally named after a comic of the same name... you probably knew that, though. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

After Infinite Crisis #5 in February, all the DC Universe titles, every one of them, will leap one year into the future; some will be cancelled, some will start again at #1, and some new titles will appear. And they'll all take place a year after the events of Infinite Crisis. The events of that year are going to be covered in the new weekly series from DC tentatively titled 52* (the asterisk is there because they aren't sure that is going to be the final name for the title).

It's called that because it's going to run for 52 weeks, a full year. And each weekly issue the weather and season will correspond to the week in which it comes out.
BTW, had a BIG comic week this week... but minus one, thanks to a damaged shipment...
JLA #117 (things are really heating up here, GREAT arc by Geoff Johns)
Rann-Thanagar War #4 (still the weakest of the Countdown minis)
Villains United #4 (second best mini behind OMAC; Catman rules!)
Batman #643 (part two of "War Crimes"; this is a very cool story, I recommend it... along with most of these others as well)
Action Comics #830 (a Villains United tie-in, so far so good; haven't finished it yet)
The rest I have not read yet:
Supergirl #0 (the first new issue was the damaged issue, which really sucks...)
Green Arrow #53
Nightwing #111
Outsiders #27
I briefly thought of picking up Breach (supposed to tie-in to one of those Countdown minis) and Hawkman, but thought better of it. Twenty dollars a week is a good limit.

I utterly loved V when I read it chapetr by chapter in the 80s when it was first published in Dez Skin's Warrior Magazine. Genius.
However, I can imagine that reading it in the 80s with evil Mrs Thatch in power could only have added to the pleasure. I think that perhaps out of all Uncle Alan's many works this one might have dated more than most and that people coming to it for the first time today (and reading it in one go with no suspence between chapters) won't get as much from it as we did.

Personally, I'm enjoying the story. I have not read an X-men book in a long time. However, I'm fairly certain Jean is currently dead. It's only the 3rd time she has 'died'. So, I'm sure she'll probably be back soon.

i was wondering if any of you know the answers to these questions.
i have only recently (1 year) started reading x-men comics and i dont know very much of the x men history....
why did cyclops and jean grey break up?
does logan still love jean like in the movies?
did logan and storm ever have a fling?
who has kitty pride gone out with?
emma frost? where did she come from? whats her histroy?
thanks guys.
<div align="right">Quoted post</div>
1/ Jean Grey died (again) at the end of the recent Grant Morrison run. Cyclops then got together with Emma Frost. It was hinted that Grey willingly died to allow Cyclops to move on. I don't expect they will leave her for dead that long however.
2/ No, Logan doesn't love Jean. He does kinda fancy her though and they flirt.
3/ No Logan and Storm have never "gone out" to my knowledge.
4/ I only remember Kitty going out with Petey. Unless of course you count her fling with the Scarlet Witch.
5/ Emma Frost started life as a villian in the Hellfire Club way way back in the early 80s. She has since given up her naughty ways and become a teacher at the mansion. She had a mental telepathic affair with Scott (Cyclops) before Jean died and the two of them have been an item since.
If you like the X-Men I urge you to get the tpbs of Grant Morrison's run. They were very fine stories.

Boo, I don't like Emma Frost. Plus, Jean Grey came back to life just recently in Pheonix: Endsong. She died again at the end of it, which causes me to say "crap or get off the pot."
They need to bring her back and keep her back, and make Emma Frost a bad guy again. Dammit.

Well, Wednesday has come and gone, here's my stash:
Birds of Prey #81, 82, 85: I went back and picked up the first two issues of this arc, along with the most recent issue which came out today; 82 had far more tie-ins to the Countdown minis than 83, which was labeled as an OMAC tie-in, did...
Supergirl #1: the issues that came into our shop last week were damaged, so I received my Kara fix this week; I'm interested to see how this one works out, I like the artwork of Churchill and Rapmund, but Loeb's storytelling is starting to wear a little thin...
Green Lantern #3: sweet, they actually showed the city I live in; that was worth the price of the comic itself, lol! But seriously, I enjoyed this reintroduction to Hal, I think that Geoff is working up to much bigger stories, this was a good intro
Manhunter #13: labeled as an OMAC tie-in, I came in midway through this story apparently; still, interesting characters, and it looks like there is a major conspiracy regarding Brother Eye and the OMAC project, as it's tied to Checkmate, Bruce Wayne, and now the DEO...

Morrison writing Superman?! That'll be a purchase!
I thought his X-Men was patchy, but the beginning and ending of his run was superb - I admit I had no idea who Emma Frost was, but I quickly got into the series and she became my favourite character.

Morrison's X-Men run was not always as clear as it could have been. There's a great site that explains it all, I'll find the www and post it here. I thought that it was an outstanding run once I had done a little reading around when he was doing.

I finally got my month and a half worth of comics!
I loved the conclusion to the XMen's Bizarre love triangle. I really enjoyed the XMens: Days of future now #1 & 2. New Avenger #7 & 8 were awesome!
But I really loved House of M #4 & 5. I thought they were great. Now to read more House of M titles then to start on DC stuff(Teen Titans will be first of course)

I got last week's comics, and there are some pretty good ones. The Ultimate Spider-Man annual is neat, <div onClick="openClose('ddbe4c291043ce054c3237f6ea89faba')" style="font-weight: bold">[ Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide]</div><div id="ddbe4c291043ce054c3237f6ea89faba" style="display:none">Kitty Pryde from the X-Men, who has previously had a crush on Spider-Man (since he first crossed paths with the X-Men way back when) calls him up to hang out, and they team up to fight the Shocker, then decide to date.
I really like the idea of Spider-Man dating Kitty Pryde, but I am sure it won't last long and he will be back with Mary Jane within a couple issues.</div>

It's the kind of thing they should do. There's no point in the Ultimate line being an exact copy of the original Marvel universe. I enjoyed The Wasp dating the old sensible Captain America in The Ultimates.

Technically, he's writing "All-Star Superman", basically an Elseworlds version. Or Earth-3, or whatever. But yeah, he's doing this, and Frank Miller's doing All-Star Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder. And there have been hints of an All-Star Wonder Woman on the way...

Alright, here are my comic purchases from Wednesday...
Adventures of Superman #643 (issue picks up after the events of "Sacrifice", nice little conclusion; the cool part was seeing the flashbacks to his "battle" with "Doomsday"... great issue altogether)
Batman #644 (the conclusion of "War Crimes"... I'm not sure altogether what I thought of this--the ending was somewhat unexpected, but predictable too)
The OMAC Project #5 (wow, great issue; God, I feel bad for the old JLI guys, but Booster has really had his place to shine in this one; and the stuff with Sasha is going to be interesting to follow)
Day of Vengeance #5 (another very good issue from a mini-series that I've really started to enjoy, despite not knowing anything about the characters; I hope they do a Shadowpact series post-Infinite Crisis)
JSA Classified #2 (this is turning out to be a really cool Power Girl story; starting to feel kinda sorry for her, though, gotta be rough being the odd girl out...)
Gotham Central #25-27 (25 was a great War Games end-piece, and I haven't quite gotten to 26 and 27 yet, but seems to be an interesting Catwoman story in the works)

Just back with:
Hellblazer # 211
Lucifer # 65
and
Gloom Cookie # 25
I've also spent this morning reading another of Mr. Morrison's work - Vimanarama. Anyone else here read that?
I highly recommend it to fans of his - all his trademark kookyness, a great sense of humour, and a rather charming relationship between the characters that works well; despite the dialogue and pacing needing a few trims around the edges (as usual with his work, I find).
Then I re-read We3 too style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

Yeah, I read the whole series.
The first three parts are quite interesting; the fourth left me a little dry. It was good, and there's a pretty chilling sequence with the Black Mask, but the ending just didn't quite feel right.
It's a good conclusion to the Gang War story, but it did feel a little forced at some times...

Very light comics day this week....
Wonder Woman #220 (fallout from the "Sacrifice" storyline; this is all leading somewhere very cool, I'm really enjoying the continuity of it all)
Green Lantern #4 (I'm interested in this series, but it's taking a little bit of digging for this DC-novice to figure out who's-who)
Batman: Gotham Knights #68 (one of the few comics I've really ever regretted picking up... I dunno, it's just not as interesting as the other Bat-titles)
Also picked up the first trade of The Ultimates 2, "Gods and Monsters". I'm still flippin on this storyline, and I really wish that Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch weren't leaving this book.

I was watching the terrible scenes in New Orleans on TV last night (see below for report) when I thought about a conversation that I had with JTS a few months ago. He was recommending the Batman story where Gotham is hit by an earthquake and then the authorities order the city to be abandoned. I was complaining that the whole thing was utterly unrealistic and very silly and would never happen in real life. Then it does. Only with water. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif
With thousands feared drowned in what could be America's deadliest natural disaster in a century, New Orleans' leaders have admitted the city could be abandoned for months.
"We know there are a significant number of dead bodies in the water and other people dead in attics," Mayor Ray Nagin said in calling for an all-out evacuation of the city's remaining residents.
Looting spiralled so out of control yesterday that Mr Nagin ordered virtually the entire police force to abandon search-and-rescue efforts and focus on the brazen packs of thieves who have turned increasingly hostile.
Gunmen in the nearby city of Gretna held up a supply truck carrying food, water, medical supplies and pharmaceuticals, prompting officials to ask police and the US Coast Guard to help evacuate a 203-bed hospital.
"We have to close it down because we can no longer ensure the safety of our patients or our staff in that hospital," said Steven Campanini, a spokesman for Tenet Healthcare.
He said there were about 350 employees and between 125 to 150 patients inside the hospital, which was not flooded and was functioning.
Earlier, Mr Nagin called for an all-out evacuation of the city's remaining residents. Asked how many people died, he said: "Minimum, hundreds. Most likely, thousands."
With most of the city under water, the US Army Corp of Engineers struggled to plug New Orleans' breached embankments with giant sandbags and concrete barriers.
Authorities have drawn up plans to clear out the tens of thousands of remaining people and practically abandon the below-sea-level city.
Mr Nagin said there will be a "total evacuation of the city".
"We have to," he continued. "The city will not be functional for two or three months.''
And he added that people would not be allowed back into their homes for at least a month or two.
