In your guys opinion, whose the best actress working today? I will go with Maggie Smith or Laura Linney.

Julia Roberts - She too me is the best right now.

your sad if you think Julia is the Best actress.
I'm sorry. But, she just isn't that great, she's good but why is she the best to you?

Maggie Smith has wit and charm in her roles. She has won two oscars for comedic and Dramatic roles (The Pride of Miss Jean Brodie, California Suite), and she continues to thrive at the age of like seventy! Laura Linney not only looks good, but has this quality to disappear into roles. That's why she is so good. Watch the Truman Show and You Can Count on Me (she was a way better mom in that movie than Julia!).

Speaking that way to other people is inappropriate here, don't do it.

Sorry, I just got into a heated argument and I was just taking it out on others.

In nicer words, I don't believe Julia Roberts is taht good. She ha very little real acting ability adn her facial expressions are very few. I don't like her.

Mann- I love your Laura Linney pick! I've liked her for a long time. After that, hmmm...Nicole Kidman, Vanessa Redgrave, Susan Sarandon, Lili Taylor, and Cate Blanchett.

Nicole Kidman has become quite an actress. I've seen some of her films recently and I must say she has done terrific work. To Die For was so good, she should have been nominated for that! Moulin Rouge was more of an Editors dream film than an actors piece, but when she and Ewan sing, I lose myself in the film. I've seen the Others too, and it was good. I thought she was out done by Fionna Flannagan, but she held her own. She looks alot like Grace Kelly in than film. She could win an oscar one day.

Vanessa Redgrave is one of the best of all time. I'm glad she was recognized for her performance in Julia, only to put in the supporting catagorey was kinda wrong cause I felt she was a lead performance. She also has done so much good work, and I saw the movie If These Walls Could Talk 2 and she made me so sad and happy to watch her.

Susan Sarandon another wonderful actress. She's been so good for so long. I love her in Thelma and Louise. That was her best movie. She is very good in basically everything. She was, however, decimated in Anywhere But Here by Portman who deserved and Oscar nod for that, but sarandon is still a superb actress.

Lili Taylor isn't that well known. I dodn't think she chooses the best movies (the Haunting) but in Six Feet Under she's great.

Cate Blanchett. I cannot stress enoguth how much she was robbed for Elizabeth. She was amazing. Words are hard to describe her presence. I think she's brilliant in the role and way better than Gwenyth and that bizarre Shakespear in Love. Blanchett has also done superb work last year with Five films! Bandits, Lord of the Rings, The Shipping News, Charlotte Grey and The Man Who Cried. She is good in all of these.

Thanks Meche, but no thanks. I can take care of my self! If you wanted too hear yourself speak, next time don't start a topic that you have a problem with other people's opinions. Tuff guy your not! But if you look at the actor topic all those actors have a huge draw at the box office. And I think she really hot! And what is wrong with a women with a big mouth, I guess when you are small it really doesn't matter too the male how big her mouth is.

A little off topic, but can you believe that Shakespeare In Love beat Saving Private Ryan for Best Picture? I was blown away by that.

Mann

Okay, first off I want to apoligize to Darth Arraics for what I said. I just menat to say that I don't agree with you. Is that all right? Can I object to an opinion? Cause you know you can comment on mine, right? That's why we have these boards, to object and agree with others views. So in the future I'll be a nicer in my words.

Now, to the topic of Shakespeare in Love beating Saving Private Ryan. At first I felt happy, since I put my money on Shakespeare to win because everyone else thought it would lose. I won like 30 bucks that night! (lost ten to the thought that truman show was gonna win best supporting actor) but then I saw Shakespeare in Love and realized it sucked! I mean it was funny at times, but nothing like Saving Private Ryan. I hate Miramax! They stole all the awards that should have gone to other films. (actor, Actress, Picture, screenplay...) They are just ruthless campaigners for oscars. I laughed when the won nothing in 2001.

Anyway, the year of 2000 had a load of actresses. Julia won on her name alone. She was good, but she wasn't great and the performance could have been done by anyone. Had Linney's film been in wider release she would have been a bigger contender. But it was between Julia and in a distant second Ellen Burstyn(She was phenomanol!(sp?)). Juliette Binoche was a joke nominee and Joan Allen was good, but never a real contender.

I agree with Mann - Nicole Kidman in the Others -- woah. That is such a good movie and she deserves an Oscar for that part.

I think Angelina Jolie is a brilliant actress besides being incredibly hot (forget Tomb Raider for a moment) -in "Girl Interrupted" she was great but she really blew me away in GIA - that is such a good movie...

I too think that Cate Blanchett and Nicole Kidman are both AMAZING actresses. Kiera Knightly is another one who I think is great. I myself loved 'Shakespeare in Love' and thought Gwyneth Paltrow was really good (she's American but did - what I thought was - a really good English accent). Anne Hathaway is another actress who I like. Doh! How could I forget Judi Dench!!??

Oh yes Luminara, I too like Reese Witherspoon.

.:Luminara:.

Bette Davis (All About Eve);
Elizabeth Taylor (ya it had to be...Cleopatra);
Deborah Kerr (The Black Narcissus - wow!)

Nice choices but I think this was intended to be about current actresses.

Darth Massacrus

I would say that the best actress is Fay Wray. Has anyone seen King Kong or The Most Dangerous Game? As for best living actresses, I would be inclined to vote for Naomi Watts, or Marian Ross. They are both very talented.

DblDwn
11-13-2006, 11:22 AM
Fay Wray and Naomi Watts in the same post? Someone's fond of big apes I think.

As far as current actresses go there really is not one that stands out to me. I could go back and say Katherine Hepburn, Bette Davis, etc, etc but it's my impression that this was intended to be about current actresses. Laura Linney was a good call. I agree that Julia is overrated as an actress even though she does make watchable movies. I think Nicole Kidman is good but also overrated. Reese is very overrated in my opinion as well. Angelina isn't anything special and I've always thought of her as more overrated looks wise as opposed to her acting so what does that tell you.

Again, I think this is intended to be more about acting ability than appearance.

Someone could always start a thread asking who the hottest actress is.

Not that I know of. That was why I said this:

I'm gonna say that Natalie Portman is the best actress (that I've seen). Beyond her good looks, and I know that has nothing to do with her acting, she is great! Of course, I love a good tragedy and she acts out "sad scenes" in her movies with 100+ points.

DblDwn
11-13-2006, 05:05 PM
Which is ironic considering how bad she was during the majority of ROTS, which of course was supposed to be a down movie for her character.

She is a good actress though.

In no particular order: Natalie Portman, Cate Blanchett, Liv Tyler, Anne Hathaway. All very good in my opinion.
