View Full Version : What TV Series Do You Watch?

Several monderators, including myself, have noted a lot of "who watches this and that" threads popping up in the last day or two, and while that's all well and good, if these continue to be mainly feelers, they should be confined to a "what do you watch" type of thread. We're working on a solution that will cut down on how cluttered the Communications board is getting, including the Index work, but try to keep in mind that part of keeping things orderly is up to you.

I'm starting this one as a temporary solution and locking the others. The other mods can open them back up at any time if they don't think this solution is working.

Why am I doing this? Easy. Someone has to be the bad guy mod, so I might as well be.

SO . . . What do you all watch?

We'll add categories to the poll as the list develops.

I've never even heard of 3 of the 5 choices.

Lately, I've found myself rediscovering M*A*S*H by way of the DVD set of the first season. It's amazing watching it without the laugh track. I'm looking forward to season 2 coming out in a week or so.

Wow, I never expected Mr. Butler to make a thread like this. :)

Anyway, as of late, I have been watching...errr well, nothing really. I watch some of the many Spanish networks we get here ocassionally, but thats only to make sure I don't forget my Spanish. However, normally, I can't find any series that seem interesting or if they do, their so far along in the story its impossible to catch up. Anyone have any suggestions? I'm pretty broad when it comes to television. Just can't stand cartoons in general for the life of me though, but other then that I like most everything.

Well, Vyndim. I think it depends on what you're interested in. I've grown fond of M*A*S*H, but the only time I know that it comes on is midnight on FOX. It's a great show and I can't help but think what it would be like if there were still shows like it on television. I mean, let's face it. A lot of shows on t.v. today just aren't that great, with a few exceptions. If you have trouble finding anything good on t.v., believe me, I know. I just turn to good ol' classic television. Chances are there's something there you'll like.

I have tonnes of shows I like to watch. I Love the "Tom Green Show"... he's a champion... and "South Park"... and "Aaaargh! It's the Mr Hell Show"... "The West Wing"... "Angel"... "The Simpsons" re-runs... "Everybody Loves Raymond"... I guess it's pretty eclectic (spelling? ugh... and I'm studying to be an English Teacher... lol)

Shoma - this is probably just because I live in the States and not Australia, but what is "Aargh! It's the Mr. Hell Show"? It sounds intriguing.

Anyways, I'll be a Simpsons fan until the day I die. "I bent my wookie"

Well, being that I don't have cable anymore, I don't watch anything except what I have on DVD and VHS. *When I did have it I watched....uhm, let's see:

Iron Chef on Food Network (it's a Japanese cooking show dubbed in English, funny stuff), DBZ (best cartoon ever, IMO), Real World, Sports Center (ESPN), all the news networks (CNN, MSNBC, etc.), almost anything on Animal Planet (except Croc Hunter et al., they're idiots) and Discovery Channel, and that's about it.

Oh yeah, I watch Friends and Jeopardy too.

Apart from the Simpsons and South Park, what are these other shows?

There was a very good thread going about JUST South Park and the Simpsons, it is just one thread but has now been locked.

Would the Mods be so kind as to re-open it as I have not heard nor am interested in these other shows.

Thank you.

Nathan Butler
07-08-2002, 03:34 PM
Alan: The thread was going nowhere, and was simply a "do you watch this?" style thread, as the other locked ones were. If you want to start a new thread specifically about discussing the show (without the implied "do you watch this, yes or no" poll aspect), go for it. We just want to keep the number of "Do you watch so and so" threads down. :)

And, I guess I should chime in on different shows I watch. I regularly watch: The West Wing, Stargate SG-1, and Farscape. I've also been a big fan (and collector of episodes) of other series that are currently not running, such as Quantum Leap, SeaQuest, Kindred, Profit, Nowhere Man, Live Shot, UltraViolet, Silent Mobius, 3x3 Eyes, Babylon 5, and so forth.

Jedi_Zachaa
07-08-2002, 04:01 PM
I have not watched any of those shows. I do watch an occasional Friends, and yes, I admit it, I watch Star Trek. But only TNG. And very occasionally an Original. Other than that... Jeopardy I guess...

I'm not a real big TV watcher. I usually read or play on the computer instead.

Oh.. well a LOOOOOOOOOOOONG time ago I used to watch Sonic the Hedgehog as a kid on Sat mornings with my brother... does that count?

Those aren't very many choices (a few of which I haven't heard of). Surely there are other programs on TV...?

I don't watch TV, but my room-mate watches those mind-bogglingly trashy daytime TV shows like "Texas Justice", various talk shows, and some horrible HORRIBLE night-time show called "Fifth Wheel", which is a kind of blind date program. *Ugh. *Now I'm reminded why I don't watch TV.

When we first moved in to our apartment they gave a us free cable, and my roomie was in heaven. *Then they took it away and then *I* was in heaven. *Then he went out and bought an antenna and now the sewage pipe has been reinstalled into my apartment.

Blech!! *I honestly don't see how you guys can stand to watch so much TV!

What exactly is The West Wing? I know its some type of political show right? What station is on as well.

Nathan, I remember the first series of StarGate-SG1; if I started watching it now, I wouldn't have to back track through the entire series would I, to be cought up with everything?(They just released new season and episodes right?) Also, Sea Quest and Babylon 5 were superb. I was extremely dissapointed when Sea Quest was taken off the air and I was fed up with Babylon by the second season when they removed my favorite race from the series(Vorlons; mispelled probably) I did manage to get a photo of the entire cast autographed by serveral of the characters though.

Yeah it's a political show ... but I've never really actually watched an episode of The Left Wing before. :p

You know, many of the shows I get into get cancelled. Why is that? I was really getting into the Fugitive a couple years ago (good old-time TV storytelling, if you ask me). Anyone watch Spy Games when it was out. Allison Smith ...

The Magnificent Seven? That was awesome! Yep, cancelled. Roswell? Very cool show, though it started losing it's appeal after a while.

And alas, my X-Files is gone too. There's nothing to watch now!! Except maybe CSI. That's about all I watch now. And they're reruns at the moment, so I'm not really watching anything. FOOTBALL SEASON, where are you????

West Wing is on at 9pm on Wednesdays on NBC. Its all about this Democratic President (played by Martin Sheen) along with his staff and all the different political issues they have to deal with. I've watched it a few times because of my college housemate always watching it, but its a pretty intense show and if you lose interest or attention for like a minute you're already lost. Usually you can catch back up, but sometimes not. And in case you have no clue what's going on (political process stuff wise) they have this blonde (of course! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif ) secretary whose job it is to ask dumb questions about what's going on so the characters can explain political process stuff in layman's term for all those layman out there watching the show.

Okay, I know with that description it seems like I watch the show a lot, but really, I don't! Promise! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hehe.gif

Seaquest? That show was syndicated? I got all excited about it when it came out, and premiere two hour episode was great, and the first few episodes were fairly entertaining. But after that, it just got silly. And Darwin was annoying!

I do like The West Wing. It's a very well done program, great writing, fine acting. It's a little manipulative at times, but what commercial tv show isn't?

I'm am deeply in love with Allison Janney.

I have been watching the Simpsons since i was about six, and I still love it. The show is about a slightly exaggerated family in the real world, it shows alot of metaphors on the real world, and teaches valuable lessons.

The best shows on T.V.:

The Sopranos- the coolest show ever. Always entertaining. I always loved gangster movies, so this is great!

The Simpsons-the greatest comedy of all time. The show is always fresh and will probably run for years.

Will and Grace- This show is hilarious. It's all about Jack and Karen

24- a fun show. Kind inplausible, but still addictive.

The West Wing- constatnly witty, smart and makes you think people in washington aren't all dumb. the smartest show on T.V.

Alias-similar to 24. Just addictive.

Six Feet Under- A great cast, some wonderful writing, which is always witty and fresh. the next great drama.

HOW could I have forgotten 24?? My god, that was the best television on this past season!! I was hooked, week to week as the plot unfolded. Man, the Senator's wife was a witch! And who would have ever suspected Nina? I actually like her, so I was more shocked than others. Besides, wasn't she in a position to screw Jack more than once before? Why did she wait till the end to betray him? So many unanswered questions, can't wait till next season! I have a renewed respect for Keifer Sutherland. The old Musketeer inside him is back.

Anyone here watch Malcolm in the Middle? That's as funny as the Simpsons!

Thank god for Nick at Nite, otherwise I wouldn't be able to see "Cheers"! What an all-time great show!

As for current day shows, well, HBO usually does it for me.

"Sex and the City"- My wife got me into it, but I really wound up liking it.
"Six Feet Under"- Very different and quirky, but terriffic!
"The Mind of the Married Man"- Funny as hell!
"Curb Your Enthusiasm"- see above.

As far as networks goes, well...

"Friends"- I started watching at the very beginning, and now only watch it out of loyalty. Ocassionally funny.
"NYPD Blue"- I actually started watching this when Rick Schroeder first came aboard, out of curiosity, and have been hooked since.
"Fraiser"- Not as funny as when it was in the beginning, but not bad, plus it has a classic "Cheers" character.
"ER"- Another loyalty case here, but it still is pretty good.

Wow, I thought that I didn't watch that much TV, but that list seems to indicate otherwise. Also, sports is a constant fixture with me.

Thats a quality show as well. In every episode a body would be brought in, thought to be a natural death or something but Quincy and only Quincy would think it was suspicious. Then he'd get suspended from work and solve the murder then get his job back. Brilliant.

I'm happy to see I'm not the only one who refers to that piece of Poli-Sci-Fi as "The Left Wing." I tried at first, but then I discovered...uh, well, it doesn't really matter what, since now my old man's hooked on it, which puts it automatically on my Sith List.

Although, we're both convinced that new assistant DA on Lore and Oardur (as he's been known to pronounce Law and Order through his New York accent) absoutely cannot act to save her life. *This Röhm gal seems to have come from the Julia Roberts school of acting, i.e. look sexy, but have the range of a pea shooter. *I think Dick Wolf needs to arrange a new Night of the Long Knives on her.

Anyway, I'm afraid I cannot answer your poll because I don't watch any of the aforementioned shows (and avoid The Simpletons like the plague). *Where's the good stuff, like "All in the Family?"

Oh yeah, I also watch the rerun block of Seinfeld and Everybody Loves Raymond on the local station when I can. Over two hours, they play Seinfeld, ELR, ELR, Seinfeld. Peter Boyles as Frank Barone just cracks me up, especially when he does something to remind me of my old man. (Like get out of his chair forgetting he had undone his pants, for instance.) style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif

When I watch, I'm reminded of the Godfather novel, i.e. Ray and Deb reminding me of Michael going out with that nice yet PUSHY little protestant girl.

Didn't mean to offend anyone (at least not today, since I know a NoIrish guy lurks around here somewhere), but you gotta be Catholic to really get the show. It's not required, much like Judaism isn't a requirement to enjoy Seinfeld, but it sure as Hell helps.

I also loved the cartoons, The Tick, Eek The Cat, and Exo Squad (this was the cooloest sci-fi cartoon ever); I Don't like cartoons these days (except maybe sponge bob).

Quincy (played by Jack Klugman) was a forensic pathologist who would always get a body which seemed to have died of natural causes. However, Quincy always believed it was a murder and would start investigating. His boss would tell him to stop because it just seemed a natural death. Quincy would then usually get sacked or suspended from work but he would continue to investigate, picking up a fit young girl along the way, until he proved the murder, solved it and got his job back.

LOL well the animation is nowhere near as bad. The writing is a lot better too. It seems almost adult at times, I mean one episode had Aquaman hacking his hand off. Let's see what do I watch:

1) The West Wing (The best show on TV)

2) ER (It will be interesting to see how it does without Anthony Edwards anymore)

3) Third Watch (Didn't get into it until just after 9/11 but now I am hooked)

4) MSNBC (I've always been a fan of the news and I think that everyone should be more into what is going on around them)

5) 24 (Was it just me or was that not a great show? It hooked you from the first hour and did anyone who watched it think that it would end the way that it did? I'm waiting to see how they pull off Season Number 2 in the Fall)

6) Basketball (I am such a basketball fan that I will watch anything from my favorite team the Bulls to the worst teams in Division III college basketball. If it's hoops, I'm watching it)

7) Golf (In the last couple of years I have become so into golf that I will sit and watch the Senior PGA Tour. Now that's devotion to a sport)

8) Football (Had to throw it in. Come on, I'm a guy)

9) Syndication (I love watching the old shows that I grew up on and some that I didn't. Examples: Miami Vice, Seinfeld, Cheers, Magnum PI, Beverly Hills 90210, Get Smart, Three's Company, etc.)

There really should be an "other" category there.

I don't watch much TV, either. The only show I really make an effort to watch is ER. And I missed the season finale because of AOTC; I forgot to set the VCR. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif Oh, well. That's what reruns are for, right?

I'm in to Japanese anime, so I like Yu Yu Hakusho.

Also, if you like Hercule Poirot...you'd like Partners in Crime by Agatha Christie. It features Tommy and Tuppence (James Warwick and Francesca Annis) and the clothes and sets are FANTASTIC!!!! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

Of the current first-run shows on television, the only ones I make an effort to not miss are ACCORDING TO JIM, LESS THAN PERFECT, ENTERPRISE, CSI, THE DEAD ZONE, and MONK. I also really enjoy the new NINJA TURTLES cartoon, but I've lost track of the new episodes after Season One, so I've just been buying the DVDs and catching up with it that way.

Otherwise, the rest of what I watch are reruns of shows no longer in first-run, like SEINFELD and HOME IMPROVEMENT on TBS. And I love EVEN STEVENS on Disney Channel. I used to be addicted to TRADING SPACES, but once it started taking off in popularity, I lost interest, especially with some of the gimmick episodes. I also try to catch MXC on SpikeTV when I can, but it always seems like it's on a different time and day each week, and FAMILY PLOTS on A&E is actually strangely entertaining, though it seems like they're already showing the same 2 or 3 episodes over and over.

Oh, and I also like AMC's SUNDAY MORNING SHOOTOUT, but I keep forgetting it most of the time because I'm usually waking up about the time it comes on. haha!!

HOLY COW!! I just realized the last post above mine was made on Aug 23, 2002, but this thread was up top on this forum. How the heck did it get there with the last post being almost two years ago!? style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.gif
