With the new site about to launch in less than a month, I figure it's time to start spotlighting some of the fan audio projects available in the StarWarz.com family.

I thought I'd set up a thread here to keep tabs on "ChronoRadio: The Star Wars Continuity Buff's Internet Radio Show" for those interested. Information about the show has previously been included in the "Star Wars Timeline Gold" thread on the Books and Comics forum, but it is both fan audio and literature/EU-based, so this is perhaps a fitting new introduction.

For those who haven't heard of it (or hadn't until now), the show is a bi-monthly production by the creator of the "Star Wars Timeline Gold" and the "Second Strike," "Anthology," and "Context" Audio Dramas over at http://www.starwarz.com/timeline. The show is meant to fill in part of the gaps left in fan audio by the loss of both JediTalk and the original run of Digital Llama Radio (which has since returned in a new format). Thus, it serves both the regular Star Wars Literature/EU community and the Star Wars Fan Film community.

At present, 32 episodes are available, all in downloadble MP3s (encased in ZIP files) that are all available around the clock (without any episode swapping to save bandwidth at this point).

The show is divided into several styles:

--Regular Episodes

The regular episodes are released on a bi-monthly basis and are numbered in whole numbers. The most recent, Episode X: The Lost Episodes, was released in early August. Topics have included such themes as early AOTC products, the future of Star Wars after 2005, current publishing trends, women's roles in the saga, mythology in the saga, and will continue with overall thematic episodes as we go into October's Episode XI: Overcoming Boundaries, focusing on the fan community and the original literature rules from the Bantam days. These regular episodes also include mailbag segments, brief publishing news segments, info from Q&A sessions with LucaaBooks people, and the occasional guest co-host.

--Supplemental Editions

These episodes, numbered with a ".5" on the end, are released sometimes between regular episodes and generally cover topics that Star Wars fans might find of interest, but which may not be directly Star Wars-related. These have included looks at other big Sci-Fi sequels and the infamous so-called "Dark Horse Rant"* in Episode VII.V: My Show Runneth Over.

*Please note that the Dark Horse situation was recently resolved. A follow up regarding information discussed with Jeremy Barlow appeared in Episode VIII, while a detailed note on the ending of the situation found in Episode IX.

--Special Editions

The Special Editions are shows dedicated to one specific topic. The first of these was "The Canon Question," a look at the levels of officiality in Star Wars.

--Serial Editions

These are episodes that take the form of "enhanced audiobooks" of original Star Wars short stories, with the only devitaiton from audiobook form being the use of several different voice actors for dialogue segrments. The first three episodes, a serial called "Parallels," was released in June 2003.

--Interview Editions

These episodes feature one-on-one (or at one point, two-on-two) interviews with big names from the fan film or fan communities and actual authors of Star Wars materials. They have included interviews with subjects like Kevin Rubio, Walter Jon Williams, Bill Smith, Will Brooker, and Michael Beidler.

-----

Each even-numbered month sees a new regular "ChronoRadio" episode, while the odd numbered months mark a new relase of the "Star Wars Timeline Gold," one of the two big fan chronologies on the net (and the only one, thus far, to be able to stand next to "TimeTales" in thoroughness).

I'll utilize this thread to include info on new releases and keep it confined here.

If intersted, you can check out the show, the timeline, or the related audio drama project at:

I got to hear Episode XI a little early because my letter was on the show. I got to tell you, that you are going to enjoy this one. When Rich (I hope that's the right name) comes onto the show, what he does to Nathan, I swear you'd think that Rich was a big actor or producer of something. I could just swear Nathan was sitting there in his room going "DOH!!!!!" Episode XI is a good listen, take a couple of hours and sit back and relax and enjoy the new episode! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

Perhaps a discussion on the two sides of mature Star Wars fan productions. The side who feels all things related to Star Wars should be PG, and the side that feels mature themes in Star Wars are nothing to fear.

Also, maybe a retro-spective on the old Star Wars Radio Dramas. For those people (read:myself) who haven't heard the full versions of these, it would be nice to see where they stand next to such high-quality fan audio dramas such as Second Strike and Rise of Nobility.

It also looks like the CR topics are now set for episodes through Oct. 2004. I'll be announcing the episode titles and the two main topics for each of those episodes in the December 2003 episode.

My thanks to all those who gave suggestions.

I am having some troubles with the interview with T'bone. I can't get it to unzip. Now it could be me, i am not very computor literate, but i have been able to listen to a couple other shows no problem. Thanks Nathan, and thanks for all your hard work. Any preview as to whats going to be on the 11.5 episode?

Nathan Butler
10-20-2003, 06:07 PM
It's basically an extended Teek's Ear News and Mailbag. I got two very detailed, very long mails after #11 that were too good to pass up and brought up a lot of good discussion topics. For TEN, there were a few small bits, but then TFN did something utterly screwy a while back in taking credit in October for a scoop that Episode-X made back in July, so there's a "Newswatch" sort of segment.

Then I've included Ryan Dube's ChronoRadio parody, "MonoRadio," to show my support for it rather than people thinking I'm annoyed.

All told, it's about 66 minutes long, which will allow #12 to be more like an hour or so rather than having a combined episode that would've run probably 2+ hours, which I think is too long for a single CR episode.

stone_mite
10-24-2003, 11:23 PM
Good Idea. 2+ hours would be a bit long. :doze: style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sleeping.gif

jerrodd
10-30-2003, 12:53 AM
The talk of structuring the length of audio productions kicks a rant loose in me. 2 hours is too long??? This, to me, goes back to the ADD leanings we have adopted thanks to MTV's videos that pack a whole lot of info into 2 minutes (imho). We (me, too) are channel flippers, fast-forward-crazy, can't stay with something for longer then whatever time frame, and its very sad. I am willing to make the commitment to listen all the way through to whatever Rich, Nathan or whoever is saying, cause they want me to hear a point/story/or something. I feel that as an audio creator, I shouldn't have to meet this criteria of a certain time frame of two minutes or whatever, or little Johnny or Janey loses interest. I understand bandwidth and download time concerns, but I just think we as fans and creators of audio productions commit ourselves to hear a project all the way through. Yes, we as creators need to edit more, but not to please "those people" who think 2 hours is too long. We, as creators should make our statements and tell our stories however long it takes, and however many files we have to split them into. This is a rant, full of emotion, and it is my opinion, and I feel much better now. Thank you for reading. I'd like my bankey now.

goodwije
10-30-2003, 06:14 PM
Wow, if you feel that way about the people who choose to DL and listen to fan audio maybe you shouldn't be making it. I just got into it, but i much perfer dl'ing and listening to an hour show, and then coming back later and listening to the next installment as opposed to sitting at my putor for time it would take for the same in a two hour length.

I certainly did not mean to offend you, i was just agreeing with Nathan.

jerrodd
10-30-2003, 06:55 PM

Nathan Butler
11-03-2003, 06:06 PM
Episode 12 will pull no punches spoiler-wise. We're doing a quick, but thorough look at each book or each duology (whatever), and the major events. You could always just skip that segment. Maybe when I put it up, I can put a time tag on the page so you know when to pause and skp ahead and when to restart.

CeeWulf
11-05-2003, 07:09 PM
I'm not sure the length issue has anything to do with the audience's attention span. It's more towards how much time a person has to listen to it. It goes towards the great "Big Chill" quote - articles should be only as long as it takes the average person to take the average poop.

Personally, I gots lots of time on my hands - mostly - but at the same time if I'm not jazzed by the topic I'm not going to be chilled about listening to three hours of it. But, if it's good stuff, Nathan could ramble on for hours.

Not that I'm trying to encourage that. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/saber.gif

jerrodd
11-05-2003, 07:58 PM
Okay, I may have an answer to this "audio length" issue that comes up from time to time. Isn't there a way, Nathan to create a show in a "cd" format. Not sound quality, but what I mean is, it is an entire show, but it has cuts or chapters that can be skipped, if the listener doesn't want to hear it.

Nathan Butler
11-05-2003, 09:02 PM
Not unless it's released as multiple files, which most listeners would find annoying, from previous feelers.

stone_mite
11-06-2003, 11:28 PM
I agree. Multiple files can get a bit annoying. If you really wanted to, you could always decode the mp3 to .wav and separate the segments yourself.

goodwije
11-07-2003, 04:10 PM
I find that if i want to listen to a segment again i just note the time and back up to that part again. OK how big of a nerd am i that i have a peice of paper next to the putor so i can note time to hear Nate talk about this or that again. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blush.gif

Mr. Butler, I've listened to all your regular episodes of ChronoRadio. You are a fan treasure, you tell it like it is, and don't spare anyone the crap they deserve. I personally have written a couple short audio parody commercials and was wondering how I would submit them for use on your show?

It's nice to see that there's interest in Episode 12, though I know that my little segment's not exactly going to be the top billing of the episode. I'll probably enjoy the two other segments more than I will the one Nathan and I recorded earlier about deaths in the EU (mostly due to the fact that I rambled on a little too long).

In any case, should be a great episode, I can't wait to hear it. And Nate, feel free to clip down my rambles a little bit. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif

Nathan Butler
11-13-2003, 11:52 PM
Heh, it's such a long story on that one.

Basically, Keith Abbott wrote the article and emailed it to Jeff. Jeff, I would imagine, just put it up without reading it too thoroughly, since it promotes stuff he's said he flat-out won't do after ChronoRadio #10.

However, it's got a few people pissed because if someone reads that article, not knowing that Fanworks has no TFN affiliation, it sure sounds like TFN is announcing the launch of their own new site, starwarsfanworks.com, since they don't bother to give any info about Keith being the one to send it or anytying.

I dunno. The exposure does alright, but we've been doing pretty well without it. But, hey, as long as people realize what the site actually is and dig it, maybe they'll start to see that there's another way to do fansites.

Yeah, I usually let a handful hear episodes as they are done, before releases. Usually, it's Sonja Nelson, Michael Galasso, Michael Smith, Gregory Harbin, Matthew Modica, and Rich Sigfrit. They're sort of my longtime listeners and helpers who have helped me with content issues from time to time.

I'll release the actual CR #12 episode (with any tweaks that may still come, though I don't think many will) on Dec. 1 as planned. I'm going out of town for Thanksgiving on Wednesday and getting back that next Saturday, so I'll put the episode up probably on Sunday afternoon/evening and get the thing released late in the evening of Nov. 30, so that it'll be up by midnight.

And, yes, I agree. I feel that it's probably my best episode ever. It was great fun to record. There's no review, but I was able to get in three main segments instead of two, and each of the three had a special guest (one from TFN, one from SWz, one from SW.com). The rant was also about as evil as I've ever been. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/saber.gif

Now, what I really need to do is to start thinking about the special guests for 2004 for all the topics. Granted, I'll do some on my own, but there are tons of topics slated for 2004 that would be fun to discuss with guests.

2004 Topics
Star Wars Kid
Star Wars as Not a Fairy Tale Anymore
Retrospective Review of TOTJ
Works of Timothy Zahn
Works of Kevin J. Anderson
Droids, Ewoks, Clone Wars, Holiday Special Cartoon
Star Wars Radio Dramas
Writers Who Shouldn't Write, Fans Who Should
Are Fan Productions Making Up For What Official Stories Lack?
The Healthy Star Wars Family Unit
Star Wars Dysfunction

And, of course, the December episode has nothing set for it yet. Right now, that's just the topics for February, April, June, August, and October. I'll also be having at least one new Interview Edition with Kevin J. Anderson, and at least one new Serial Edition with the contest winner's story, whomever that may end up being.

Heh. Just gotta help 'em separate the man from the menace. After all the issues that came up with Yankey and Luther (uhm, I mean, two unnamed TFN Fan Films staffers) in the last few months with accusations against me, accusations against CR, and the ignoring of facts when presented by Griffen himself, it's not that unlikely that the immediate reaction to having someone from TFN on CR will have a few people going "What the hell?"

That's part of why I felt it was time to try to be sure to work you in, though. The best way to show that one is trying to be fair and balanced is to have representatives from all over, and this episode sure did that in spades.

C'mon, let's NOT turn this into a SWz vs. TFN thread, can we, please? Remember, I'm the Fan Audio board lawman. I want Fanworks to be fair and balanced, and I want this board, as much as possible, to follow that creed as well.

If there are issues raised in ChronoRadio to be discussed, that's fair game for the thread, but let's not deviate from our primary purpose, which is completely and utterly idolizing . . . me. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif

I just finished listening to the new episode. Nathan is right, the whole mess over the Fan Community becoming (as you so aptly put it) "A nest of Gundarks" is becoming all too true. I personally can't tell until a person starts the full-on, Curse-Only posts when they're trying to flame me. I hope that it doesn't degrade any further, making the hobby stagnant. While Star Wars is a great thing to have when the "real" work is done, it shouldn't be everyone's life. Just because I don't know every rumor for episode 3 doesn't mean I can't formulate a decent opinion on what will happen (not that I care, I'll see when I see and be satisfied with Jar Jar's death dammit.). In short, guys, don't be hatin'.

At last!! I had the chance to listen to the final rant that you hinted when you where talking to us on the phone during SWD05e. Its was great! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

Im 31 years old now, And I've also seen the change you're talking about Nathan. I didn't post at all on message boards before 1999, and the first time I did on a english prequel board (Im French Canadian style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif ) I was so blasted for a comment that I made that I never gone back posting on board in english... period. I only post on Fan oriented Boards (except my website) now, If I'm posting at all.

The problem is general. On my other website (see signature), we had the same problem so we've written down stricts rules about blasting other people and respecting other members. The problem is still there, but its done in a more respectful manner. Less *****ing, more debating.

Nathan Butler

It's that fan-oriented thing that really bothers me, honestly, and you're quite right in how a lot of people, like yourself, get a bad taste immediately. It's as if the only places where fans don't treat each other like contemptable swine is in smaller communities that are isolated from licensed material discussion.

It's like a matter of both content and size. The fan film community was great for a long time, but it essentially became "too big for its britches," and now it's "too big and full of *****es."

So to speak.

Well, new to the Galactic Senate, happy to be helping out with Timeline Gold, I just wish it was better news that brought me here.

The possiblity of the Timeline ending does concern me, but given the reasons, it may be justified. I personally don't visit or post much simply because it has gotten so ugly out there. Why post or speak a thought if I'm just going to get flamed or ignored because my opinion is different from somebody elses? It HAS to get better before Episode III or this could just be... well, could spell the end of a core fanbase on the internet and that would be a major tragedy right there.

CeeWulf
12-02-2003, 05:51 PM
I don't know. I'm pretty new to the whole Star Wars fan scene. I mean, I've been a fan since I was a kid, but never really got all that involved with others in that endeavor. I've never really had friends who were into Star Wars like I am.

But, I'm not sure that Star Wars fandom on the net is really the proper way to judge fans. Fandom is like any other thing, eventually it becomes commericialized, generalized, packaged and controlled. Everyone fights for it. TF.N fights for control, Fanforce fights for control, Star Wars Fanworks fights for control. They all want to establish their places. TF.N seems to do it by less-than admirable means - alledgely - and Star Wars Fanworks does it by cooperation and support.

The worst form of Internet communication is the Message boards. They're generally full of junk, bickering, smart-ass, arm chair debates and anonymous SPAM. People can say whatever they want on these boards and feel detached from it because they're just saying things to handles and not real people. The best example of that is to look at Ain't It Cool News. The dredge of the galaxy love posting there. TF.N has its fair share of dimwits. People who dismiss you on a whim or slam you because you dared disagree with their interpretation of the Force. But, why should that affect your appreciation of Star Wars?

Do I think Nathan is right for his statement at the end of CR #12? Yes and no. I think there is some truth in it. There's a lot of bickering and strange arguements that go on amongst fans and fan organizations. I don't get it, and I think it's mostly stupid, but it does go on. Will it kill fandom? No. Fandom will go on. And I don't really have any interest or intention of letting the actions of others deminish my appreciation for the SW story, so why should anyone else? I can only be responsible for my own actions and statements. I keep my website and publish my reviews - even if people don't read them. I do it for me, not for them. I do it because it's fun, not because I want to be popular or the number 1 website. I get a lot of good hits via Google, I get a few e-mails. That's enough for me.

I think it would be a shame if Nathan decided to stop being a part of Star Wars fandom because of the actions of other fans. Appreciate the series, show that appreciation if you want, but don't let other people pollute it for you. Do it because you enjoy doing it. Conduct yourself in a respectful way, treat others with respect and honesty, and leave it at that.

CeeWulf style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/satisfied.gif Bravo, i feel much the same.

That said i also feel that any and every fan should do what makes them happy and fulfilled. If you feel the SWT-G is hurting your experience Nate than you can always stop doing it. I can hear the joy in your voice doing CR, if that is the type of fan you need to be, concentrate on that instead.

It is that joy and level of fun you bring to CR that keeps me coming back, half the time i am lost listening to your continuity or EU segments, but i still love to hear the passion and excitment from you and your guests.

This is all about fun right, hell it used to be. Getting the new Bantha Tracks and running next door to your best friends house to share it. Making lightsabers out of garden stakes covered with electrical tape. We are adults now, and maybe our endeavers and understanding is a little more spohisticated, but the pure enjoyment should still touch us as i did back then.

CR #12 has been the fastest download growth yet. I'm actually beginning to worry about our bandwidth considerations for the month. Thanks to the new CR's popularity, we've reached about 1/3 of what the normal monthy bandwidth use is for Fanworks in the span of about four or five days. Ah well, I guess if we pay overages, we pay overages, right? No reason to dwell.

I'm glad you like the forthcoming interview, Michael.

Now, however, I'm starting to look at the numbers and such, and I'm thinking I may have to get back to not allowing downloads out to anyone, even the "inner circle" people. I know there aren't 26 people in that group of about 5 that I showed the file to after it was finished up, but sure enough, it's been accessed 26 times, and it's a Zip, so it isn't the same 5 streaming it. That's not a HUGE issue (well, it is, but not as such), but when I'm paying VERY close attention to bandwidth after the news byte on TFN's front page that, presumably, has caused the recent download avalanche (think more than a full release month of downloads-worth for any other CR episode, but in the span of 4 days), it becomes a bit more important to be able to control, at least as much as possible, how much new files are being downloaded, especially before the month they were allotted bandwidth for.

They're all pretty bad, my least favorite Bantam is Darksaber - better writing then some of the others, but for me that's where the "super-weapon of the month club" mentality made me want to poke my eyes out.

I wanna know what everyone's problem is with the Black Fleet Crisis. Crystal Star is the single worst modern EU novel, maybe the worst EU story of all (though I'd image Glove of Darth Vader could give it a run for its money); the "Callista Trilogy", while not spectacular, was solidly told and had, I think, more redeeming qualities that detracting ones, but I can understand peoples' complaints. But BFC, I thought, was one of the most unique and compelling stories of that era. Maybe it was non-traditional in a lot of ways, but just think of what might have happened to the NJO if BFC hadn't laid all that groundwork for intelligence- and politics-related drama.

bluemilk
12-10-2003, 07:14 AM
I don't have a problem with the BFC, in fact... this is a post I had written in the Novels thread.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>I'm of the opposite opinion regarding the trilogy. The Black Fleet Crisis, in my opinion, was better than the Thrawn trilogy. The usual suspects were written with far more depth and McDowell included some of the most memorable supporting characters written by any Star Wars author. His attention to detail was absolutely wonderful as were all the stories woven together.

The Wookiees were written intelligently, with a sense of humour and with dignity. McDowell showed how Chewie's absense from Kashyyyk affected his bond with his son. Even the droids, and Lando and Lobot were nicely written and showed to that they had all changed in the last 14 years after a lifetime of experiences.

This trilogy was insider's guide to the New Republic during it's golden era and how their own fears led them to war. This was never about Nil Spaar and his xenophobia, it was about the fear the New Republic had of itself from the top (Chief of State) to the bottom (the pilots). The Black Fleet Crisis was about the reaffirmation of self, family and the beliefs the Rebellion had fought for in the beginning. [/b][/quote]

I quite enjoyed BFC style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

And, Matt, I think what happened was that #12 was very visible, since it had guests from SW.com, SWz.com, and TFN LLC, which brought in new listeners, as has mentions and cross-promotions with the other radio shows, like ROTO and SWD.

I don't really want to get into specific numbers, but let's put it this way:

December's edition has had only 54% of the release time that the October edition had during its release month (31 days), but it has already gotten about 58% more downloads than the October edition.

Had bit of a thought just now, you've talked about fan co-operation on CR, so how about the flipside to that, fan grudges?

One rather bothersome trend on the net, and indeed many other fan gatherings/forums/etc is the tendancy to form cliques, and indeed argumentative cliques. My first sci-fi convention I went to I was wearing a DS9 t-shirt and got dissed rather vehmently by some B5 fanboy, and you can imagine what goes on in message boards and on Usenet.

Alright, folks, at long last: ChronoRadio: Interview Edition #16 is finally released, featuring none other than Star Wars and Dune expanded universe author Kevin J. Anderson in the best CR interview yet.

Enjoy, and happy new year.

The url to KJA's site is wordfire.com (http://www.wordfire.com), hope it is ok to link to it. I am planning on sending an envelope in. I am not a huge KJA fan, but hey its a free offer, and i did enjoy what he had to say in the interview.

Dany: Thanks. I really enjoyed doing that one.

Goodwije: Glad you're intending on taking him up on the offer. Also, do you have a "real name" that can be "made public?" I'm quoting something you posted in the next CR for the mailbag (one of your board comments about the commentary in CR #12), and I'd like to credit who said it properly.

And, everyone, ChronoRadio #13's guests: Gregory "Eaglet" Harbin and (dum da da daaaaa) Abe Peterka.

Before this, I wasn't a huge fan of KJA because of what I had seen as "super-weapon crazy", but after listening to this I ran out and bought some of his Dune books, and I must say I enjoy his writing much more after listening to him talk.
I have never been a huge KJA fan either - i think i mentioned that style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif - anywho i was also very impressed with this interview. As a big fan of the original Dune novel, but pretty much despising the sequels, and a little nervous about KJA, i never have picked up the prequels, guess now i will have to check them out.

I maybe even conviced to pick up one of the Star Wars titles i missed by Mr. Anderson as well.

Glad you guys dug the interview. I had my own issues with the "superweapon of the week" thing, but after getting all those issues discussed, I have really bumped him up on my list of SW authors. I loved TOTJ, but I hadn't gotten as much into the superweapon aspects of some of the later ones. Now they're all up there.

And as for Abe, he's not involved in DL 2.0 much, as far as I know.

As far as I know:

Chris Hanel: Now in Iowa waiting to move to Los Angeles, CA, having graduated from DAVE School in Orlando, FL. May do more on-location DL 2.0 episodes.

Abe Peterka: Now heading up Comics in Action.

Steve Phelan: Still on DL 2.0

Justin Whitlock: Left show and is now raising Little Corey Whitlock.

Becca Peterka: Uhm, no longer part of the DL family. Let's leave it at that.

Josh Wasta: Still on DL 2.0

C.J. Mobberley: Still on DL 2.0

So a reunion's in doubt, heh. However, my intent is to try to get Justin on the show by year's end.

By the way, a new segment is being added to CR in 2004. It's a 6-part tutorial on "storytelling" that I originally wrote for Tom Crawford's now possibly defunct site. Each regular 2004 episode will have one segment of it, running about 5 - 10 minutes each time, between the review and the commentary. I've recorded all six and am now editing them.

Also, be on the look out for a skit being produced by Rich Sigfrit and I to help promote Nexcess.Net, our great web hosts, and a special perk of being a fan audio project creator using Nexcess.Net as your host.

And, yes, that skit will see the return of ChronoRadio's long lost opening announcer . . . Yoda.

By the way, for those who haven't gotten the introduction, Jjm3233 here is Jay. WAAAAAY back when the Star Wars Timeline Project started, when I first was on the internet much, there was a now-defunct message board on AOL called "Discuss the Prequels." Jay was among the very close-knit group of fans who were part of that community. Most of that community is gone now, but Jay was part, as was PTH's Devon Read, frequent fan audio voice actress Amy Ferrell, and 2S script editor Kat Murdough.

Thanks for the intro. I also have the distinct honor of being #19 on the SWT-G Thank You's, for work done many years ago.

Here's an update (for your benefit and mine) on CR #13.

So far, the working file includes:

Teaser
Opening Theme
Intro Segment
Teek's Ear News: ConCarolinas
Teek's Ear News: Public Service Announcement
Teek's Ear News: USO Operation Phone Home
Teek's Ear News: Winner of CR Serial Edition Contest (assuming no one beats the front-runner by Jan. 18)
CR Mailbag: Periolat; Sheridan; Goodwin; Wil
Segment 1: Star Wars Kid (with Gregory Harbin)
Review: Tales of the Jedi
6-Part Tutorial: Part 1
Commentary
Endcap

I'm still needing to record:

Segment 2: SW as a Fairy Tale (with Abe Peterka)

I may have it finished by early next week and be able to put in more work on getting "Nothing Changes" written.

Nathan Butler
01-10-2004, 02:01 AM
Our current leader in the Serial Edition contest is almost entirely mixed together now. If it turns out to be the winner, it'll be released on Feb. 1 with the new CR episode. If not, it'd be probably in 2nd place, which would just mean we'd release it a bit later.

So far, though, it's the front-runner.

Nathan Butler
01-10-2004, 08:55 PM
Nopes. Sorry, darlin'.

On the plus side, I just talked to Abe a bit ago, and we're doing the segment for CR #13 tomorrow morning at 10 ET / 9 CT. Once that's done, I should pretty much be done with CR #13.

What that means for sad Heather here is this: While I'll keep the montage on the computer in case I have to alter anything like the contest winner, I'll likely be able to export a "final" copy of the episode by tomorrow night, so the "inner circle" will be able to hear the Feb. 1 episode three weeks early.

Better?

Mkay, for the record:

I've not heard back from Abe outside of the first early phone contacts, and his phone line was tied up the day we were supposed to record. So, I'm going to push back his appearance, presuming he does make on, until a later show or interview episode.

I'm going to be bringing in Michael Galasso for that segment, since it also fits that we'd talk about another of his projects.

Oh, and as of now, the Serial Edition contest is *OVER*. We have our winner, and the winning tale will be released on Feb. 1 with CR #13.

Nathan Butler
01-20-2004, 06:25 PM
CR #13 is effectively finished minus any last minute changes that have to be made, of which I doubt there will be many, if any.

CR: Serial Edition #4, the contest-winning story, will have its file finished tonight, I believe, so it *will* be launching on Feb. 1 like the others.

I also just got my package back from KJA, and I'll be emailing him a thanks sometime tonight, but, I figure it's this way for everyone, not just the show host (heh, perks!), but this package wasn't just Hidden Empire hardback signed. It was also a bookplate signed to be inserted into the second book in the series to make that a signed copy, a copy of Whipping Mek signed by KJA (I now have two of these, one from Dragon*Con signed in front of me), a copy of his newsletter, and a promo postcard-sized item for Brian Herbert's biography of Frank Herbert, signed by Brian Herbert.

That's three signed KJA things and one signed Brian Herbert thing, for the cost of an envelope and postage, folks. Take him up on the offer!

Nathan Butler
02-24-2004, 10:09 AM
Okay, an update on CR as a whole:

I'm going to be trying to refine the format a bit again as we get further into 2004. A few things that are intended:

1. Limiting Teek's Ear News to no more than 5 news bytes.

2. Limiting Mailbag to no more than 3 letters.

3. Using ongoing features to keep a sense of continuity throughout the year, such as the 6-part Storytelling Tutorial. Set up Michael Galasso as a possible regular guest for topics that aren't otherwise covered by a guest, much like Fox News contributors on O'Reilly, At Large, etc.

4. Have a guest for at least one segment, if not both main segments, for every show. Only do one-man feature segments if the topic is so intricate that it requries one detailed explanation and description.

5. If any negative mail or comments are received (which there haven't been in a while), include at least one among the no more than 3 letters per show.

6. Try to make all reviews tie together somehow. In the case of 2004, the rest of the year will be rotating between SW Infinities mini-series reviews and reviews of chunks of the pre-Clone Wars Republic comic series.

7. Include some positive commentaries throughout the year, rather than just what amounts to rants.

8. Include more small snippets, such as the Nexcess skit or earlier commercials like those done by Rich Sigfrit and others. So, if you're into parody commercials, hit me with some.

9. Do less interviews than in 2003, but make all interviews, hopefully, as entertaining and well-researched as the KJA interview.

10. Hold at least one more Serial Edition contest before the end of 2004.

11. Set up a general Special Edition schedule to begin in summer 2005.

12. Get confirmation of a yes or no on CR having a sort of official band that would be featured new openings and closings, perhaps even as new transitions at times.

13. Run no episodes more than 2 hrs, aiming more for no more than 90 min. (preferably 80 for CD-burners, but that is only a dream, most likely).

14. Cover enough in main episodes (perhaps in contradition to plan item #13) to ensure that there is not a need for many Supplemental Editions in 2004 and beyond.

The big question: If my copy of Survivor's Quest from E-signings.com STILL isn't here in time for me to read the entire thing, then record the Zahn segment for CR #14, then still get it out on April 1, what should be done? Should I delay the release of CR #14 until I can get it, or should we focus our Zahn discussion on his previous works with only casual references to SQ and its sister novel, and thus still get it out on April 1?

Either just glance over it or couldn't you just shuffle the schedule a little bit? Maybe do some of what you were going to do for June for April and then do the April stuff in June? Seems like that might be the easier method, at least to me.

Not really. We've already done the KJA segment and it's set up as a continuous thing, just with the Nexcess bit in between. So, we're kinda locked into it.

Well, then just do what you suggested. Do the previous works and just glance over the newer stuff. Surely you could come back to it later on in the year if necessary.

FINALLY got my signed copy of Survivor's Quest today. I've started reading through my headache and am hoping I can have it all read this week, so that Michael and I can record the Zahn segment over the weekend. We'll see, though. It's not like there's any major rush or anything. I'd just like to get the new CR and new SWT-G done in time for April 1.

That's good to hear, Nate. Looking forward to the next show.

It may not be good once you hear what I have to say about Survivor's Quest. So far, I have to ask "Oh, what has happened to the mighty Zahn and his mighty grasp on the Star Wars atmosphere?"

:: sigh ::

Bummer. But, eh, at least it's signed. I can put it with my other two signed SW books.

I doubt I'll say that since the last post-ROTJ novel I read was the Thrawn trilogy!! LOL

Unless it's a prequel book, of course. Those are what more interest me right now.

Hey Nathan, any of those tricks I talked to you about helping out any?

I won't be using them at all for this particular CR, given how much is done, but I'll definitely will in the future. I've already used it the noise reduction setup for some stuff I sent in for Crossroads 2.

For the record, I'm about 50% through SQ.

Michael G: That should mean that we can do the recording of the second half of the "Two Men Enter" segment this weekend if you're up for it at that time. I'm hoping to be done by then. I'll not be very glowing about this one (sigh).

Sounds good. I should be available Saturday or Sunday anytime. With luck, I can pick up the duology sometime this week. That should allow me to at least give my opinions on the back-cover blurb. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif

LOL, cool.

Yeah, Survivor's Quest is more interesting now than it was 100 pages ago, but with just under 100 pages to go, it still has the feel of . . . I dunno, Children of the Jedi? Nothing even remotely on Zahn's usual level.

But, hey, that could just be because we haven't read his 2nd part yet, the Outbound Flight story.

Hey, Nate. Is this book that you're reviewing the set that's supposed to be post-NJO that you mentioned a couple of episodes back? If not, when is it set? Is it a Clone Wars set?

Nathan Butler

The Post-NJO stories are by Troy Denning. The book I'm talking about is Survivor's Quest, the 22 ASW4 story of finding the Outbound Flight Project. Then, Zahn is supposed to write another one set right after TPM with the actual OFP itself.

As for reviews, the reviews for the year go like this from here on:

CR #14: Infinities ANH
CR #15: First half of Pre-Clone Wars Republic comic series
CR #16: Infinities ESB
CR #17: Second half of Pre-Clone Wars Republic comic series
CR #18: Infinities ROTJ

I've actually already recorded several segments for future episodes. Outside of the work on #14, I've recorded all 6 parts of the tutorial, the June commentary, and the I:ESB review. I'll be recording the Republic reviews probably this weekend or next.

Looks like we might be seeing a change in the CR: D.O.A. episode because, well, it's not a fitting title anymore. I was going to cover XWRS and Tales as ongoing, ended SW comic series, but now Rostoni and others have confirmed that Tales is not ending with #20. I will still cover those two titles, I think, but whether I still call it D.O.A. is another matter. We'll see.
