Voted for boys also...I just can't see why girls arn't interested in this... :D

I would say it is individual. Some boys are bigger fans than some girls, some girls are bigger fans than some boys.

Among my own friends I certainly notice that guys tend to be the more intense fans but most of my friends like Star Wars, they are fairly mainstream movies really. For all the baggage attached to them.

Luthien
05-25-2002, 09:22 AM
Hmm...it always seems odd to me to hear Star Wars described as mainstream. It really isn't here in Norway. It's a much smaller part of the culture. Many people haven't even heard of Star Wars, or wouldn't recognize elements from the movie if they saw them.

Meche

What if I'm a girl who thinks boys are bigger fans?

Vyndim
05-25-2002, 02:34 PM
Are dead people counted as male/female? So I'm not sure Meche's vote counts. :p

Meche
05-25-2002, 04:41 PM
Don't discriminate! Actually the shape of my hips indicates that I can only be a woman.

Blizzard
05-25-2002, 08:06 PM
LOL Meche, hips!

I agree, what if you are a girl who knows that there are more boys who obsess over Star Wars than there are girls. The simple fact that the women's bathrooms at a Star Wars convention with 30,000 people attending were virtually empty proved it.

If we are talking who gets more into Star Wars obsessively... I say girls. Many the obsessive fansites are run by women. Men tend to more a fan of the movies or genre.

Well, I based my vote on my 15 million viewings of TPM in a theater, of which 14,999,999 were matinees and my 4 viewings of AotC, 3 of which were matinees. During these viewings I noticed two things. 1) The children present were mostly boys, taken by Dad. 2) of the childred present the boys really got into the movie. 3) I really had no life in 1999.

So here's a female who voted for the boys.

This topic, for those interested, is covered at great length in Will Brooker's Using the Force, which is a great study on SW fandom.

At my school the girls are bigger Star wars fans but over all I think that boy are bigger fans even though I'm a girl.

Vyndim
05-27-2002, 08:45 PM
I have only met one girl who was ever interested in Star Wars. Just met her recently really, but she actually seems to know her stuff. But thats it, just one. Before that, I had never even heard of a girl who was even remotely interested in Star Wars. Around my area, nobody shows any interest in Sci-Fi or Fantasy all that much. Which probably explains why I never find anyone to talk to.

I have about five friends at school who are interested in Star Wars and know their stuff. All of them are boys, so I have to vote boys on this one. I have known one girl in my life that liked Star Wars, but she was more into making her own figures then the movies themselves.

I voted for girls just because I'm biased :p Seriously, the majority of SW fans are boys. I agree with Blizz, girls are the ones who obsess over SW.
When I first became a fan I was the only girl who liked SW, so I had to play pretend by myself, not even my brother wanted to play with me....I stole his toy blaster and pretended I was Princess Leia. :) And btw, I wore my hair in cinnamon buns!

I would say based on the genre of movies Star Wars falls into, it makes sense that it has a male-dominated fandom. Sci-fi is a very male oriented genre - how many of the great sci-fi authors are female?

But then again, Star Wars (at least the movies) is also fantasy (set in space) - and fantasy tends to be about equally male and female.

So when you mix a male-dominated sci-fi with an equally followed fantasy = A LONG TIME AGO IN A GALAXY FAR, FAR AWAY :D

I voted for Boys, because I do think its the boys. My friends are SW fans and they are wild, and I know some girls and they love it but really dont show it. But some girls are more fanatic then some boys, vice versa.

I must say boys are the biggest fans in my experience; most girls I know don't care for it at all. A pity this is. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unhappy.gif

As I've stated before Star Wars fans come in all ages and all sexes. *I think it's 50/50, maybe the people you know are mostly boys that like Star Wars , but remember Star Wars has been around for 20 years. *I know just as many female fans as I do male and all different ages. *Maybe they are not on this board but they are fans just the same. *When I first saw Star Wars it was a long time ago, and when I went ,there was just as many females as males. When I saw Ep II the theater was filled with just as many females as males, actually a lot of older people, it was at night, approximately 8 P.M. *style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blush.gif

I did a psychological study on sci fi and society for my degree, one of the things measured on my questionnaire was who liked sci fi better, boys or girls?

The results were non-significant but showed certain trends. One of the trends indicated that more males than females were interested in science fiction.

LOL interestingly enough, though, it found that more females preferred horror than did males!

More typically more females than males preferred romance and soaps.

and more Males than women preffered comedy interestingly enough.

I for one am one woman who loves, sci-fi, fantasy and horror. When I was a little girl I wanted to be Luke Skywalker (Leia never had a lightsaber!!!) and SPIDERMAN!!!! (although I suffer badly from arachnophobia!) style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

Just because there are more boy fans, doesn't mean that boys are the bigger fans. *

I am a girl, and I have yet to find a guy who is a bigger fan (or geek, as I like to say) than I am. *The only people who have beaten me at SW Trivial Pursuit are girls. *One guy came close, though. *

I voted for boys. *It just seems to me like males would be the bigger fans. *When I joined this forum, I was really amazed at how many girls were here. *I don't know why, I just was.
Then, again, in my theory sex and race can narrow one's thoughts.

I was once told that the reason that there is more male fans is because Star Wars would appeal more to them. I was unsure of this at first, then remembered that I am somewhat of a tomboy...

I'm a girl, but I voted for boys, because I think that boys are bigger fans. Actually Star Wars is more like boys' stuff. Weapons, effects, aliens, war... I know few girls, who like Star Wars, but I'm the only one, who's Star Wars geek (like Luvinna said). I'm not that kind of girl, who likes romantic movies. My fave movies are Star Wars, Black Hawk Down and Fight Club. Most of the people think, that I'm kind of weird girl, because I don't like Bridget Jones or Titanic. It's not bothering me.
I'm proud, that I'm not like most of the girls.

yeah same here. my favorite movies are star wars, indiana jones, lord of the rings, and fight club. a lot of people find that strange. i'm not like most girls either because i like punk and all that crap. but i don't care. i don't understand though why not as many girls like star wars!

Heck, no!! * :0 * *A guy asked me a while ago what my favorite part of AOTC was. *He seemed very surprised when I said the speeder chase, and the lightsaber fights. *And those seismic charges in the asteroid field were just too cool!! *IMO, Anakin fighting Dooku with the two lightsabers didn't go on nearly long enough! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/saber.gif

I'm finding it weird, that most of the girl don't like Star Wars. I mean, most of the male actors in SW are very good-looking. So, if most of the girls likes Titanic and all these others stupid movies beacuse of Josh Harnett or Brad Pitt or Lenardo DiCaprio, then they should like Star Wars. Right? Right?

So I was kind of right. But I can't understand one thing: why most of the girls, who aren't very big SW fans, are choosing Hayden Christensen over Ewan McGregor?

Yeah, probably has to do with the fact that the prequels have included male actors that seem quite attractive to the female audience (while not being really talented) *coughHayencough*
