My collection is pretty small in comparision, but it includes my parent's and my sister's DVDs as well, so don't get on me for some of the "girlier" movies, since they AREN'T MINE:
The Phantom Menace
Attack of the Clones
Saving Private Ryan
Gladiator
The Beatles Anthology
Minority Report
Goldeneye
Tomorrow Never Dies
Die Another Day Special Edition
X-Men 1.5
Spider-Man
Air Force One
The Patriot
The Fellowship of the Ring Extended Edition
The Matrix
Angel Season 1 DVD Collection (a lot of discs)
Angel Season 2 DVD Collection
Ocean's Eleven
Life as a House
Bandits
Meet the Parents
Finding Forrester
Chicago Widescreen Edition
The Santa Clause
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Citizen Kane
Casablanca
Fools Rush In
The Fast and the Furious (not the "Tricked Out" edition)
Vertical Limit
The 6th Day
Orange County
The Banger Sisters
Where the Heart Is
Random Hearts
Not Another Teen Movie
Four Weddings and a Funeral
Pulp Fiction Special Edition
Pride and Prejudice
Oklahoma
The Sound of Music
Fiddler on the Roof
West Side Story
A Chorus Line
The Music Man
Annie (1982 version)
The Wizard of Oz
Moulin Rogue Special Edition
Dirty Dancing
Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood (ugh)
Like I said, forgive me for several of these films, but my mother and sister have some female tastes (though, I will admit that most of the musicals were mine, since I performed in stage productions of several of them). In any case, definitely cannot compete with a collection of 360 DVDs, but I think I've got enough. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif
Wait, correction: I won't have enough until I've got Episode III and the Classic Trilogy on DVD. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif

I purchased them from a buddy of mine who knows a guy who gets things that aren't available. They aren't licensed products but the picture is great, the sound is adequate and it will due until the real ones are released. It is so much nicer watching them on DVD though in case I want to skip ahead to a certain scene.

I wouldn't worry aboot that kiddo style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/happy.gif it's all about quality anyways. You can have 500 dvds with 400 being bargin bin crap. but then I'm really picky and because of my minimalist tendencies I only spend money on stuff that I really REALLY want to have. So my point it, just buy the movies you love and forget the rest. hmm I'm going to browse your list, bet it's good!

Good point... I hope that means you approve of the quality of the DVDs I've got... speaking of which, had a coupon for 25% off somthing at Borders today so I picked up the John Cassavetes: Five Films box set from Criterion... Of the films in it, I've only seen The Killing of a Chinese Bookie (and apparently I've only seen a recut version -- not the original one that's in the set), so I'm looking forward to watching those.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>1) Star Wars Trilogy
It's no secret I'm a Star Wars fan, and the Star Wars Trilogy -- until this year -- was the most anticipated set of all time. Now it's here and although it has its flaws, I'm rejoicing in the fact that I don't have to rely on my bootlegs anymore.
2) The Lord of the Rings Extended Editions
The films are near perfect so it goes without saying that these DVDs bring us one more step up the ladder of perfection. Incredible amounts of extras plus all that restored footage make for a fantastic movie experience.
3) Indiana Jones: The Complete Collection
Indy was always one of my childhood heroes. Films like these and the Star Wars films redefined the term "blockbuster." There are no deleted scenes to be found, but my VHS tapes are finally retired. Combined with Star Wars on DVD I can officially put my VCR in a box and lock it away forever.
4) The Godfather Collection
The DVD set you can't refuse. The Godfather films are classics. Having them on DVD is better than chicken parm with a side of rigatoni. The Sopranos sit at the kiddy table compared to these films, and the extras take you even deeper into the mafia franchise.
5) Alien Quadrilogy
This is the one set on my list that I don't actually own because it costs too damn much, but I have the previous set and love the films. Scared Ripley, tough Ripley, bald Ripley, clone Ripley - I love 'em all.
^ Yeah.. it's great.... is there a Seinfeld thread floating around in here somewhere?
One of the coolest things about the DVDs are the "notes about nothing" -- using the subtitle track on the disc to give little anecdotes and commentary about the episodes. It's nice because you can still watch the episodes and follow them and find out little bits of info at the same time.... whereas with an audio commentary it's hard to follow the episodes... of course, I've probably seen every Seinfeld ep multiple times, but it's nice to be able to watch an episode whenever you want to.
Now I need to get off my butt and pick up the two Curb Your Enthusiasm box sets that are out.

We've got some nice DVD releases this week... including the new cut of Mallrats and the new version of The Longest Yard (Burt-tastic!)
The restored edition of Sam Peckinpah's "Major Dundee" will be out tomorrow as well. It's been recut in the same manner as the DVD releases of Welles' "Touch of Evil" and Sam Fuller's "The Big Red One," trying to restore the film back to the director's original vision before the studio got their scissors out and recut the film.
Best Buy also has Hotel Rwanda listed for $9.99 this week in the circular -- if you haven't seen that movie, ten bucks is a bargain. Really good movie -- Don Cheadle does a spectacular job.
Criterion has An Angel at My Table, Naked and Masculin feminin coming out this week.
Anybody pick up any good discs lately they'd like to recommend? I'll add my endorsement to "Crash" -- picked it up the other week and it was well worth it. I picked up the new releases of "The Deer Hunter" and "The Sting," but like most of the DVDs I pick up, I haven't had a chance to watch them.

Ok, I got the new Mallrats disc today, and was excited to take it home check out the "extended cut."
Thankfully I did watch the Kevin Smith intro, where he explained in detail that the "extended cut" was nothing more than a workprint-style assembly -- according to the ten-minute (!!! talk about overindulgent!!!) Smith/Mosier intro, a version of the film that "shouldn't exist."
My fault for not doing research, but when the packaging advertises the new cut as a key feature -- and this is a movie I already own mind you, so this is a double-dip -- without any indication that it's also fairly unwatchable. The only redeeming factor is that it's a good lesson for editors on how not to cut a movie. I turned it off after the twelve-minute (!!!) pre-credit sequence. Waste of time and money.
I also picked up some other discs today, all of which promptly go on my shelf and who knows when I'll watch them... but I did pick up the Director's Label Series Vol 2 box set from Palm, which includes volumes 4 - 7 of the series. For those of you unfamiliar with the series they are a collection of music videos, commercials, etc... by particular directors. The first three titles in the series were especially strong -- Spike Jonze, Chris Cunningham and Michel Gondry. This time we have Mark Romanek, Jonathan Glazer, Anton Corbijn and Stephane Sednaoui.
I'm checking out the Romanek disc now... of the four it was the one I was most interested in (videos for Jay-Z's 99 Problems, Weezer's El Scorcho and Johnny Cash's Hurt), but I am disappointed that the videos shot in widescreen are not anamorphic on the disc. Causes me to have to switch aspect ratios from video to video on the widescreen TV. Anamorphic transfers where approrpriate should be no-brainers by now.
So far I've only looked at six or so of the videos on the Romanek disc, but I don't think I'd recommend this as highly as the first box set. Jonze, Cunningham, Gondry - you can get into their work even if you don't like the music. That's just a knee-jerk reaction from the first disc though, I'll pass full judgement when I've looked at the others.

Do you already have Mallrats? Do you think the transfer on old Mallrats disc is inadequate? Are you going to watch any of the new extras?
I feel like I kind of wasted my money. I bought it thinking you were getting a true director's cut when in fact you're getting a workprint. It's like the "Love Conquers All" cut of Brazil in the Criterion set -- I'll never watch it, but I understand why they put it in the set. However, they advertised that it was a *******ized version of the film there so that you can study what bad things a studio does to a director's vision, whereas the new Mallrats disc touts the new cut as a "Special Extended Cut" or something like that, making it seem like a good extra, which is most certainly is not.
I wouldn't recommend double dipping unless you are really interested in the other extras.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>so youre saying that the extended cut is nothing more than the movie with the 12 minute cut scene which sucked anyway?
Smith and Mosier describe it as basically the shooting script assembled into a film. So I think there are other bits and pieces there. They rambled on for ten freaking minutes introing the thing, which was ridiculous in of itself. They're nearly as funny/cute as they think they are when they pull crap like that.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>but there HAS to be cool extras right?
Got so frustrated with what the "special extended edition" actually was that I didn't even bother to look at them. Looks like some documentaries and stuff, I was hoping for a better cut of the movie.

Release day tomorrow.... but not a lot coming out that I'm getting excited about. Criterion is putting out a couple of Nicholas Roeg films -- Bad Timing and The Man Who Fell to Earth.
Family Guy fans who haven't yet downloaded the Stewie Griffin Untold Story can buy it tomorrow. I saw it a few weeks ago and was underwhelmed.
Lords of Dogtown is coming out this week... didn't see it, but from what I've heard it's basically a fictionalized retelling of Stacey Peralta's excellent documentary Dogtown and Z-Boys, which has been out on DVD for a couple years. If you're debating between the two, get the documentary.
Anyone excited about any titles coming out this week?
Next week is going to be a big purchase week for me, with the Sixties Samurai Classics box set coming out from Criterion, a new Hitchcock box set with remastered versions of many of his best films from Universal (included, among others, are Vertigo, Psycho, The Man Who Knew Too Much, Rear Window and Shadow of a Doubt) and the first season of Alfred Hitchcock Presents.

Only new releases I picked up were Unleashed (Unrated), Project Grizzly and Me and You and Everyone We Know... I got the three Fox film noirs I didn't have yet (The House on 92nd Street, Whirlpool and Somewhere in the Night), Elephant, Nobody Knows, and Style Wars...
Considered picking up Veronica Mars as well, but I'm going to wait for one of my friends to buy it and then borrow, because I've not been a huge fan of the episodes of the show I've seen.

My list of "must buy" is getting longer and longer, I'm spending too much money on rentals and digital cable. Project Grizzly is great. Some Canadiana for you there 2BQ. Its been out for quite a while but they are cashing in on the Grizzly Man right now and put it on DVD. I really want to see Me, You and Everyone We Know and I hated Elephant. My "to-buy" list is getting shorter while my "to-watch" list is getting long and longer...
My old roommate had Project Grizzly on VHS and I watched it one time -- great stuff... crazy Canucks and their grizzly bear fighting suits.
Elephant was fifteen bucks. I saw it last year some point (a download) and I had mixed feelings about it, but in the end I decided I liked it. I'm actually feeling the same way about Last Days right now -- I wasn't a huge fan of it after I saw it theatrically, but now that I'm a few months removed from the film I find it that it lingers in my memory in a lot of ways.... I might pick it up, I think it comes out next week.
Van Sant is an interesting director -- on one hand he'll go and remake Psycho (which I own on DVD but will never watch, then he'll make something like Elephant or Last Days or My Own Private Idaho, and the next thing you know he's turned around and crapped out Good Will Hunting and Finding Forrester.

Anyone get anything besides Revenge of the Sith this week?
DVD Planet finally delivered the 10/18 Criteiron releases to my doorstep yesterday -- Wages of Fear, Le Samourai and the Rebel Samurai box set.
I do plan on picking up the new edition of Office Space.
Other than that htis week is kind of slim -- Millions looked interesting to me, but not worth a blind buy, and I don't have a ton of interest in the 1950's version of War of the Worlds.
Next week's (11/8) releases look fairly week, other than two titles from Criteiron -- the Japanese classic Ugetsu and Robert Bresson's Pickpocket. Hopefully these will come out on time, Criterion has been experiencing some release delays lately.
Anyone pick up a disc lately that they'd recommend?
Also, word on the street is that DeepDiscountDVD.com will be having a 20% off sale from 11/11-11/21. DDD usually has some of the lowest prices on the web (be warned though -- slow shipping)... I might pick up a few box sets that I've been putting off getting during the sale.

Dark City was one of my first DVD purchases back in '99 and I'm looking forward to see Proyas revisit it. Ebert did a commentary on the orginal disc and he has recorded one for the new disc as well.
As far as releases this week go, the only discs I'll be picking up are Ugetsu and Pickpocket, both from Criterion... and next week I'm going to get absolutely nothing! Good for my wallet, considering my paycheck is going for a car payment that week.

King Kong (1933), Seinfeld Season 5, Seinfeld Season 6, Spielberg's War of the Worlds, Ran (Criterion Collection), Tales of Hoffmann (Criterion Collection)
I'll probably be picking up all of those with the exception of War of the Worlds.
I urge everyone here to pick up Ran -- it's Kurosawa's final masterpiece and has already been presented twice on DVD, both times in subpar editions (the first from Fox Lorber, the second from Wellspring). Early reviews indicate that Criterion has gotten things right this time. For my money it's the most anticipated DVD release of the year -- and yes, I am aware that a certain Episode III of a series was released on DVD this year.

I did see it. Hated, hated, hated the ending -- a very solid film that got "Spielberged up" and ruined it for me.
Lots of discussion in the War of the Worlds thread that was going strong in early July in this section... do a search or scroll back through the pages to find it.
My advice: get Ran instead. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

I thought it was fantastic. I don't know if 2BQ is referring to the manner of defeat the aliens suffered (which I was glad was not changed from the original book) which I know some people don't like or the happy ending, which did seem a little strange but it didn't ruin the movie for me.

The latter -- a typical sappy Spielberg ending.

As I said in another post, it's Akira Kurosawa's last great film -- an adaptation of King Lear transported to feudal Japan. Brilliant film, and Star Wars fans should always take note of Kurosawa, as he is without a doubt Lucas's biggest influence.

I'm ashamed to admit I have never seen a Kurosawa film. If I were to suddenly attempt to familrize myself with his films, where would you recommend I start?
The Bandit
11-19-2005, 11:19 PM
Golla,
For someone with a Star Wars background, I'd recommend The Hidden Fortress, available on DVD from Criterion with an introduction by the flanneled one himself.
If you're a fan of A Fistful of Dollars, then Yojimbo is an excellent place to start.
If you're a fan of The Magnificent Seven, then point yourself in the direction of the The Seven Samurai -- though this might not be the best introduction due to its length (3.5 hours) -- it was the first Kurosawa film I saw.
Once you've checked those out, other titles to look at are Sanjuro (the sequel to Yojimbo), Throne of Blood (his adaptation of Shakespeare's Macbeth), Ran (King Lear), Kagemusha (produced by Lucas & Coppoa)
If you like what you see, you can move on to some of his more difficult films -- great movies, but not as easily accessible as the ones I've listed -- Ikiru, about a man dying of stomach cancer; High & Low based on Ed McBain's "King's Ransom" (and later remade as Ransom with Mel Gibson); Red Beard, his last collaboration with Toshiro Mifune, Dersu Uzala, a film he made in the Soviet Union; Madadayo, his last film; The Lower Depths, based on a Maxim Gorky play; Stray Dog, one of his early films about a police officer who has lost his gun....
That covers most of what I've seen of his work.. I think the only title I didn't list that I've seen at this point is Drunken Angel, which is an early film and I don't believe it's available on DVD in the US at this point.
TLA Video in Philly should most of these available to rent...

Thanks for the tips. Unfortunately, I live by Atlantic City, so I don't think I'll drive to Philly to try and rent those. That said, we've got a semi-decent video store here, so hopefully, I can find some of those titles here.

^
Netflix should have them if you can't find them in AC...
I forgot to mention that Criterion has an "Akira Kurosawa: Four Samurai Classics" box set that has Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, Sanjuro and The Hidden Fortress. DVDPlanet.com has this set for $65, which is a pretty good price -- however, there have been persistent rumors that Seven Samurai is going to be reissued in a newer, better version sometime in 2006, but Criterion has not made an announcement.

Your not missing much P-Ray IMO, the first two Batman movie bonuses are ok, but the last two are pretty boring, most likely due to my lack of interest in the last two of the anthology.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>I haven't seen the DVD of The Magnificent Seven they have now so I can't really decide which I should get, whats the picture quality and surround sound like on the current DVD?
I just popped the disc in... the picture quality is good, but not great -- not as good as I remembered it being, that's for sure. There is a lot of evidence of dust/scratches -- especially in elements where there is an optical effect (cross dissolve, fade to black, etc...). I suppose I'd say it looks as good as it can without undergoing a digital clean-up process or full-blown restoration. So in that case, depending on the pricing of the SE and what I can get for my old disc, and pending seeing screenshots from the new transfer, I suppose I'd probably end up getting the new edition. If you are thinking about buying it, I'd say wait on it. If the new edition doesn't feature a vastly improved transfer than chances are you'll be able to get the old version cheap when it does come out -- if it does feature a new transfer than it will be worth the wait.
As for the sound, I've got the remixed 5.1 track on right now and it's decent -- most of the audio is coming from the front speakers -- the DVD also includes the film's original mono sound track. I listened to that a bit and it doesn't seem like the 5.1 has drifted away from that (there are some instances where you will find completely different foley in a new 5.1 mix -- often times to the point of distraction for someone who is familiar with the original sound mix of the film).

^ok thanks, I've been comparing the bonus features of both versions and it doesn't look like much more is offered on the new edition, if the new edition isn't to pricey i'll go with that one in the hope of better picture quality.

The ending of WotW (the resolution to Cruise's family situation, not the way the aliens are defeated) basically killed the entire film for me -- it had nothing to do with having seen the earlier version of the film or having read the book.
The movie is about an immature father taking responsibility for his family under the most desparate of situations. The cop-out ending lifts that responsibility from Cruise's shoulders entirely -- basically hitting the "reset" button and allowing him to go back to his lifestyle from the beginning of the film. It turned what was a fun, intelligent, action flick into a waste of two hours of my life. I wish Spielberg would just consistently turn out crap so I wouldn't have to even worry about going to see his movies -- instead he'll do several bad movies and then something brilliant like Catch Me If You Can, which easily ranks up with his best work. Go figure. Hopefully Munich won't suck.
Anyway, slow DVD week for me -- just picked up Murderball. Looking forward to seeing it again.
Next week is a big release week for me -- three new Fox Film Noirs (The Dark Corner, The Kiss of Death and Where the Sidewalk Ends), Aqua Teen Hunger Force Volume 4, Clone Wars Volume 2 and Truffaut's Shoot the Piano Player will be released by Criterion.

You're right! The more I have talked to people about WOTW the less thrilled I became.
At first I enjoyed the action scenes and the suspense but the movie was a letdown especially at the end.
Tom Cruise spends the entire movie running, driving, swimming and even killing someone to save his daughter but yet his son makes it safely home somehow to a family that didn't even look affected by the Alien invasion. I guess the Aliens struck everywhere but Boston. They must have been Red Sox fans. I assume!
My other question is: if the Aliens needed humans to harvest their blood, why did they disintergrate the first million or more? I don't get it style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/giveup.gif

I loved some of the extra stuff! The documentary that goes along with Batman & Robin was really good! They kept taking about how they rushed into that movie too quickly and the studio was really focused on it being more kid friendly for the toys. Shumacher, however, did say that he wasn't blaming them because he was the adult in charge and he took the blame. He also apologized for disappointing some of the fans.
A DC editor did stated that all the movies accurately represent Batman at different eras for the run of the comic.
It was all good stuff! It is worth the time if even remotely interested.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>Top DVD of 2005: 'The Incredibles'
Once again, animated films dominated the list of top DVD sellers in 2005, with the Disney/Pixar feature The Incredibles, distributed by Buena Vista Home Entertainment, selling 17.38 million copies, making it the top-selling DVD of the year, according to Home Media Research. DreamWorks Animation's Madagascar and Shark Tale tied for third place with 10 million copies sold, while Warner's The Polar Express placed fifth with 8.13 units sold. All of those films were computer-animated, but Disney's reissue of the 55-year-old, hand-drawn Cinderella came in at No. 8 with 6.56 million copies sold. Also making the top-ten list was Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith, which came in second with 10.36 million units; Universal's Meet the Fockers, ranked sixth, with 7.21 million units; Disney's National Treasure placed seventh with 7.2 million units; Universal's Ray took the ninth position with 6.53 million; and Batman Begins placed tenth with 6.15 million. I've got the Criterion Collection version of Shichinin no samurai (or Seven Samurai in English) in the mail. My older brother got it for me for a Christmas gift. Cannot wait until it arrives.

Criterion will be releasing a new edition of Seven Samurai in 2006 -- rumored to be sporting a new transfer (Seven Samurai, while bearing Spine #2, was actually Criterion's first DVD release and its age is really showing), improved subtitle translation and hopefully more extras. You might want to exchange the old edition for another disc and hold off for the new edition this year.
Criterion will also be revisiting Kurosawa's "Yojimbo" (Spine #51) and "Sanjuro" (Spine #52) in 2006 -- both discs are pretty shoddy by today's standards.

Has anyone seen Stealth, March of the Penguins or The Island.
If so, what's the verdict before I decide to rent or buy these?

I've got mini-reviews of both Stealth and Penguins in the Last Flick thread -- didn't see the Island.
In short - avoid Sealth at all costs, rent Penguins.

For Christmas, I got two DVDs that I really wanted: the fourth season of 24, and the Godfather Trilogy collection.
After Christmas, with gift cards and cash in hand, I went on a DVD shopping spree and bought the uncut version of Sin City, the Director's Cut of Se7en, Superman: The Movie, Superman II, and the first season of Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman.
I'm still waiting to get the fifth season of The West Wing, the Tower Video I went to didn't have a copy. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif

A bit late, but my DVD Christmas haul was -- The Decalogue, The White Diamond, the Anchor Bay Herzog box set, Dinner for Five first season, Ed Wood, Kikujiro, A Scene at the Sea, Lifeboat, 4 Little Girls and Dr. Mabuse: The Gambler.
I also took serious advantage of the DDD 20% off sale picking up the following discs for myself --> The Red Shoes, Taste of Cherry, Insomnia, Black Orpheus, For All Mankind, The Night Porter, Autumn Sonata, The Magic Flute, Le Million, Vagabond, And God Created Woman, Pygmalion, Fiend Without a Face, Black Narcissus, I Know Where I'm Going, All That Heaven Allows, L'Avventura, Coup De Torchon, Charade, Cries and Whispers and The Lady Eve....
And then I found myself at Borders and they had a sale after Christmas and I got The Last Wave, The Scarlett Empress, Ratcatcher, Unforgiven, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and Grizzly Man.
Oh yeah, and I picked up season 4 of the Shield at Best Buy the other week and just finished up watching it.
Yeah, I have a problem. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

I have 4 seasons of Smallville to watch plus Firefly, Lois & Clark season 1 with the Flash entire series season coming out next week and The Tick -the entire series coming in the mail, thinking when am I going to find the time to watch all this. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/banghead.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif

You make the wrong assumption that I watch these DVDs in a timely manner. Honestly, I have discs that I've owned for 3+ years and never watched.

There are times when I think I have gone overboard with my DVD collection, but when I get down to it, I only have about 50-60, and there's a good portion of those that I've never watched.

That's what I mean. I look at what I have, and then when I buy one or two, I think, "Okay, that's enough for now, I have waaaayyy too many DVD's". In the end, though, my collection is miniscule compared to yours, or 2BQ's, etc. I can't imagine what I would think if I bought every single movie that held even the slightest bit of interest to me.
I try to narrow my purchases down to personal favortites, and even then, it has to be some sort of 'special edition', with extras I can really sink my teeth into, in order for me to buy. With all of that said, off the top of my head, there are probably about a dozen DVD's out there right now that I would add to my collection, and like I said earlier, my collection is roughly around 50-60 DVDs.
What prompts everyone else here to buy all of the DVDs that you do? Surely it can't be because you love everyone of those films so completely that it must be added into your library of hundreds.

I have about 350 or so... either they are on sale or they are gifts or I heard good things... mostly if theyre on sale style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif and new flicks that I missed in the theater but really wanted to see... first week DVD releases only cost around the same price as 2 tickets to a matinee

Jiminy Crickets! That's a lot of DVDs. My DVDs are bought in a similar manner, but I'm far more discriminating. I'm only gonna buy DVDs that I know I'll watch again.
For instance, some of the DVDs that I have include A Few Good Men, Batman Begins, The Truman Show, Anchorman and seasons of 24 and The West Wing. All very different films and TV shows, but all things I can watch over and over again.
Granted, there are a few films in my collection I haven't watched all that often. I've only watched The Elephant Man once since I've gotten it (it's just such a moving and sad film, can't watch it too often), Citizen Kane only a few times, and Die Another Day maybe twice (and only because it was a Bond film).
I do hope to expand my DVD collection, I'd love to have dozens of movie choices when I've got time on my hands to watch them. But I just couldn't imagine having over 350 DVDs! That's quite amazing. Congrats on such a massive collection!

Well, since we're throwing out numbers, my current number is 838.
A similar topic came up on another forum I post at -- here's my reply -->
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>I started buying Criterion discs when I started buying DVDs, back in '99 -- I think Seven Samurai was my first purchase. (first movie I bought on DVD was the awful Madacy version of Metropolis). I actually had a fairly modest Criterion collection (around 75 or so) this time last year -- just the titles "I wanted." Then I landed a full-time job, had some disposable income and said "screw it, I'm going to get them all." I've always had an OCD-esque personality when it comes to collectiong (it's genetic I swear, my grandfather has a room full of Beanie Babies -- a 65-year old man with a room full of Beanie Babies) and I've done Star Wars collecting, Transformers collecting etc etc over the years, but right now it's all about the DVDs.
Anyway, I like to think of the Criterion collection as an excellent "jumping off point" in self-education of cinema. "Wow, Burden of Dreams was awesome, I'm going to check out some Herzog" and now I've watched all the films in both Anchor Bay box sets, plus Grizzly Man and The White Diamond. I bought Epidemic after I watched The Element of the Crime... bought Persona after watching some Bergman (even though it was more an exercise in trying to understand why I wasn't liking the Bergman I was watching), bought Dr. Mabuse the Gambler after seeing The Testament of Dr. Mabuse... etc etc etc...
And I'll also be the first to admit that Criterion has put out some films which I don't enjoy (Sisters comes to mind, I was also completely disappointed with Man Bites Dog, and as I watch the rest of the films in the collection I'm sure I'll find others that I don't have the taste for), I am consistently impressed with the product that the company releases -- the quality of films, packaging, really impresses me. They are something worth owning, and also, it's my money, I'll do with it as I please.
That said, I completely respect your opinion to keep a small collection -- there's nothing wrong with being a "renter" or someone who just likes going to the theatre to see a film -- I'm just
