Has anyone heard of this new version of PS2 that will have a more improved fan, network adapter already in it, and an infared sensor for a remote?
i read that it comes out in June or July and will cost $200 where the older version will cost $179. I think i might get it

The current version of the PS2 has had it's price dropped to $149 (as has X-Box).

No Sony has announced they are coming out with a new version of the PS2, it will be known as the PSX. Originally it was said it was just gonna have the built in network adapter and such, but the PSX Sony unveiled has a DVD-R playback, 120 GB Hard Drive, and a nice slot loading drive. I'll see if I can't find some links to the stories.

Ohh and I don't know if I'll be shelling out money for it thought. I'll wait for PS3. Although I did win my PS2 so its not like I spent money on the PS2 in the first place...

Fastinating. And yet there are rumors floating around here (here being Yokosuka Naval base Japan) of a white PS2 being sold in Akihabara, (roughly translated; Electric light city) Tokyo.
Supposedly, it's duel-region. It'll play both Japanese and American DVD's and games. Hell, sounds good to me. I could buy Soul Calibur II tomorrow.
Now this PSX I have a question about...will it be backwards compatible?

This is the first I've heard of a newer version of the PS2. If they release it in Australia I would sell my PS2 and get the new one straight away. It sounds awesome. I hear they are bringing out a newer version of the XBOX too, but who cares, XBOX sucks.

I wouldn't buy it unless the graphics and sound systems were updated.
I have all three of the major systems: X-box, PS2, and Gamecube, and I must say the PS2 is my least favorite. I think the cube has the best exclusive titles, and the x-box generally provides a better experience with the titles available for all three systems. Plus, I enjoy the superior networking capabilities of the x-box ( i.e. live).
This is coming from a guy that really doesn't care for Mircrosoft. So I wouldn't say the system sucked. The original controller sucks, but not the system.

PS2 has more exclusive games i think and its system is more for adults and sports games.
all depends on what you want.
im gonna get the new PS2 cause i have a 2 yr warrenty. so what the hell!

PS2 has to be my least favorite system also. There really aren't that many standout titles on there compared to the other consoles and they even had a year head start. I'm always getting frustrated with my PS2 also. The loading times take forever, and I really don't think the graphics are as good as Gamecube or Xbox.
I think I'll wait for PS3. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mellow.gif

I'm sorry, but I've yet to come across a game cube title that can hold my attention for more than an hour. It seems to me that Nintendo is quickly becoming the Disney of the Video Game world; releasing games that suck to score an extra buck. Half of them just seem to be title rides anyhow.
Seeing as I'm a sailor, and I live on a ship, the X-box is far too big for me. It takes up waaay too much space. The PS2 is big, but not that big. It has games I enjoy; Tenchu; Wrath of Heaven; Metal Gear Solid 2, Final Fantasy X, Twisted Metal Black, WWE Smackdown; Shut Your Mouth to name but a few.
Plus the PS2 version of Soul Calibur II will have Hiatchi from Tekken as it's hidden character. (Heh, heh, a fat old man in a diaper kickin' the snot outta Nightmare. I love it! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif ) Which will be released This August I might add.
I just wish they'd release a Final Fantasy Tactics 2 for the PS2 instead of making us wait on the Gameboy version. ???

nintendo sucks cause all they do with their games is release new updated versions of them on their new consoles. its boring. they need some fresh ideas.
back to the thread topic, anyone know when PS2 version 2 is coming out?

The PSX will not be under $600 bucks. I mean the article says that the going DVD/RW are at least $400, plus all the other stuff on it.It also said it is a testing ground for the PS3 to see what the consumer will like, and dislike, then cut it down on the PS3.
I believe I can wait on the PS3 myself.Talk about marketing ploy, Sony seems to drag cash for extra stuff all the time.Thye are marketing geniuses second to GL.

I'm not trying to turn this into a console war. Like I said, I own all three, but I just like the exclusive titles for Cube better. In particular: Metroid, Zelda, and Mario. Those are great games. Granted, they share a lot in common with their predecessors, but they're still excellent games in their own right. The only exclusive games for PS2 that hold interest for me are the Final Fantasy and the Twisted Metal games, but for the first time in years, Nintendo will also have an exclusive FF game this year so that's one less loss. Besides, one of my favorite all-time classic multiplayer games will be released for the cube this year when the new version of Mario Cart is released this fall.
I also couldn't disagree more with the comment on Nintendo releasing games that suck. When compared to PS2, no system has ever had as poor a record as Sony for releasing sub-par games. Sure they're are far more PS2 releases each month than the other systems, but that's largely due to the large number of worthless games that come to Sony systems. I sometimes wonder if they have anyone in charge of quality assurance.
At this point, I would buy an X-box before I'd buy PS2. They play basically the same games, and the graphics and sound for the x-box versions are FAR superior to the PS2. The x-box is somewhat heavier and larger, but it's not THAT much bigger.
If you're more a fan of gameplay than graphics and sound, and, if multiplayer abilities are less of an interest to you, for my money, the GC has better quality games. If you want multiplayer, more adult orientation, or love sports games, I'd go with the X-box.

errr, wrong guess! and these games have been recycled over and over and over again. its getting old.
and i think sports games are better on PS2 then XBOX. graphics dont make the game, the gameplay does of it. thats whats wrong with people today is they think that since a game has awesome graphics or that a movie has great SFX that its gonna be sooo great. not always. also, i wouldnt buy an XBOX for those HUGE controls. they are aweful and not to mention Gamecubes. PS2 has the best ones out there

Well, the original x-box controller was a bit too big but the new one is ok. The Cube controller is very good though, and is really very similar to the playstation controller so I just don't see the controller as an issue. I agree that gameplay is the deciding factor. For sports games, this is only a matter of preference really as all versions are generally the same. PS2 gets a slight nod here as most people are more familiar with the controller. I never meant to say PS2 wasn't a great system for sports games; however, most real video game players play multiple different games. I can't think of another genre where PS2 isn't matched or beaten by X-box or Gamecube and usually by both. Check out IGN for comparisons of games on the systems. Very rarely does PS2 even score a second in head to head. And, yes, they take gameplay into effect when reaching their conclusions.
I don't care how many times they've made a Zelda game, they're generally very cool. Same with Mario. Both are classics.
Metroid may be the game of the year. It's either Metroid or Splinter Cell for the X-box in my book.
Are you trying to insinuate that the PS2 is less dependent on sequels? Surely you're joking. Grand Turismo III, Grand Theft Auto III, Final Fantasy X, Twisted Metal Black ( 5th I believe ), etc, etc.
All systems have recycled games. That not a bad thing either as the sequels are easy to just pick up and play without having to learn the controls. Sure originality is nice, but I just don't see that any system has that great an advantage in that regard. Not with programmers making most of their games for multiple platforms.

yea but those PS2 titles are somewhat recent. not 16+ years old

^makes a rather ironic statement on a site dedicated to a series of movies >25 years old.
It's cool with me. I was just discussing a point. Like I said before, I have them all. I'm a huge video game freak though I don't play as much as I did 20 years ago, and I enjoy games on all three systems ( I love the Twisted Metal series. ). Still, the only system that I'd consider selling at this point is the PS2. Not that I don't like it, just that I feel the other two systems bring something unique whereas the PS2 is basically just a technologically inferior version of the X-box.
