GAMING: Xbox and XBox Live

I just went out and bought it the other night. Right now the Live enabled games I have are MechAssault and Unreal Championship. I was wondering if there were any other Senate players out there who have it?

I need to get Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Ghost Recon. I'll probably get those in the next couple weeks or so.

You can play Halo on-line but not through X-box live.

I've got x-box live. Right now pretty much the only game I ever play on-line is Ghost Recon.

I play Halo via system link with my friends. I'd like to get the opportunity to teach T'bone a few moves.....

To play Halo online you have to have a router and hook your X-box up to the router. Then you need a program called gamespy ( or some other tunnelling software ). You can then play against other x-box owners throughout the world. The downside is lag. I've played very few games that don't have significant lag.

I never do it myself but my friends do. That's why I'm a little weak on the details.

I can honestly say that I am the best at Halo out of all my friends, but that really isn't saying much as all of them aren't very good. So I want some people that actually present a challenge.

Damn it, just when I thought I was all set up, I discovered that I have no way of hooking up my hub, you see there's only one plug-in for an ethernet cable, and six for usb cables...but..........my modem doesn't work with a USB cable!!! Tried installing it that way many times with no luck.

Halo ain't on live...yet, not until later this year...to play Halo online you gotta have a hub (or router) and you gotta download the program available here (http://www.xbconnect.com).

It's a little different than that. Go to http://replacements.webprogram.com/en-us/programoverview.asp for a replacement cord that potentially burned about one in 10,000 Xbox user's carpets. Nobody's hands got burned or any homes got burned down. It's probably because some people had their Xbox units running 24/7 and flat-down on their carpet.

Before you buy used do some research on the different versions. Some people are selling their old Xbox to get a newer version because of problems reading discs.

Case in point: My friend just picked up an Xbox for cheap but he is unable to play some Halo 2 games because of a "Failure to load map" error. This isn't persistant and he can resolve it by restarting it sometimes but it's sure frustrating when you're online or playing sys link games.

Oh blah...dial-up is too painful to use now. Who's he connected with? My parents are still on dial-up and are paying only $10 a month less than what I'm paying for cable. I guess if you were to use NetZero or something super cheap it would make sense to keep it if you didn't use it much.

He worked his way up from games such as "Space Invaders" and "Asteroid," onto the modern combat games.

"I guess I don't know how I do it, really," Mellen said, as he continued playing while facing away from the screen. "It's beyond me."

Mellen knows this much: He started playing at home when he was about 7.

"He enjoyed trying to play, but he wasn't very good at first," said his father, Larry Mellen. "But he just kept on trying. ... He's broken a lot of controllers."

When the question of broken controllers comes up, Mellen flashes a smile and just shrugs.

"I used to have quite a temper," he said. "Me and controllers didn't get along very well."

Now they get along just fine.

While playing "Soul Caliber 2," Mellen worked his way through the introductory screens with ease, knowing exactly what to click to start the game he wanted.

He rarely asked for help. Once the game started he didn't need any help.

"How do I move?" an exasperated opponent, Ryan O'Banion, asked during a battle in which his character is frozen in place.

"You can't," Mellen answered before finishing him off.

"That's what happens. It's why I don't play him," O'Banion said after his blood-spattered character's corpse vanishes from the screen.

How Mellen became so good is a mystery to his father.

"He just sat there and he tried and tried until he got it right," Larry Mellen said. "He didn't ever complain to me or anyone about how hard it was."

Mellen hangs out any chance he gets at the DogTags Gaming Center in Lincoln, which opened last month. Every now and then someone will come in and think he can easily beat the blind kid.

That attitude doesn't faze Mellen.

"I'll challenge them, maybe. If I feel like a challenge," he said, displaying an infectious confidence. "I freak people out by playing facing backwards."

There's nothing he likes better than playing video games, Mellen said.

He will be a senior in high school next year. After graduation, he plans to take a year off because he wants a break from school.

When he does go to college, Mellen wants to study video game design.

I don't know where you are buying. A new Xbox is $150 and a year for Live is $50. And some people just like console gaming. In my own experience lag is a little worse on PCs too.

I also don't have my computer hooked up to as big of screen as my tv, and my surround is on my tv, not my computer.

I'll be waiting for some reviews before buying. There are too many rumors to sift through right now to make the decision. At first I thought I'd by the 360 just because of the inevitability of Halo 3. H2 is a good game but ultimately disappointing to me...even after the millions of autoupdates.

No, all three powers will have to vie for my attention. We'll see who comes up with the best console AND titles.

I'm still up in the air about whether I'll be getting a 360, PS3, or Rev. I'll wait and see what each offers before making my decisions. Halo 2 has really just started to look more and more like a disappointment to me so Halo 3 is starting to be less and less of an influence in my decision.

I played a little bit of Call of Duty in Best Buy last night. it looked good, but you know what, my current Xbox looks really good and I can stream video and music from my computer plus play any game from the NES, SNES, Genesis, etc...

I've played the 360 at work. There's is better graphics but since it was a stupid demo, I really couldn't get a feel for it. Oh, and everything is wireless, which is a plus.

Not worth it for me. I can't see myself filling up the HDD that came with my 360 anytime soon as I don't download movies on it. I know MS's strategy is to make the 360 a living room hub to your PC via Vista but it's extremely limited right now. As for way better than the PS3... it better be more than $20 dollars cheaper considering the PS3 also offers HD DVD format of Blu-Ray and the Elite doesn't have an HD-DVD drive... it's still a separate $200 purchase.

When you purchase a $400 360 and a $200 HD drive you've got... guess what... a PS3 for $600, lol. It's all semantics. As for "better", that's all opinion too... Right now, 360 has the upperhand due to selection of titles and the online marketplace is more robust... then again, it's been out long enough it BETTER be more robust. PS3 will get there too.

I opted against the Elite and just bought the bigger harddrive separate. I couldn't justify the expense involved in trading in my old 360 and paying the difference just to get the hard drive and a black casing... which is the only real added value.

The HDMI port is nice, but only if you have an HD-DVD drive for $200. Otherwise, games on the 360 are not supported at 1080p, only movies and only with the extra drive. If you don't watch HD movies on your Xbox, the HDMI port doesn't add any further value than the regular composite cables since they support the same resolution short of 1080p.

Well, it depends, I can't remember if the 360 just comes with a red/white audio and a yellow video... which doesn't do really any HD or if it comes with the red/blue/green video which will support HD. If you get the red/blue/green one, it does 1080i I believe, which is actually really great for movies... though I think most of the games only support 720p.

I think I read somewhere that some red/blue/green cables can support 1080p if the TV can through that... but I'm not well-versed enough to know if that's true. I just know the 360 can do 1080i, but only on movies and only with the HD drive. The HDMI port with the Elite will support 1080p... but again, only on movies, and only if you buy the separate HD drive. In time however, more games for the 360 will support 1080p now that there's an HDMI option.

Xbox 360 Premium and Elite both come with a YPbPr cable, aka component cable. A component cable is capable of transferring High Definition up to 1080p, but because of current trends HDMI is the new kid on the block. HDMI supports HDCP, which is just copyright protection, as well as it sends audio and video digitally through one cable. It makes my job easy because it's not as big of a cable to fish through a wall.

1080p isn't all it's cracked up to be. You'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between a good 1080i signal and a 1080p signal. Unless you are using a projector with a humongous screen you won't be able to tell the difference.

Composite cables support a NTSC standard resolution of 480i.
