I hate this, when people get this whole "it will suck" attitude toward movies before they come out and have a chance to be judged on their own merits.
I mean, it's one thing to say "it looks like it will be bad," but to go saying crap about it before you've seen it is wrong. It's like I can't say "it will be cool," because I haven't seen it.
JediJaina
05-26-2003, 04:15 PM
I hate that kind of attitude too. It's easy to dismiss this because the inspiration is from a Disney ride, but I have always been fascinated with movies that have some kind of historical theme in it.
That's just my expectations for the film. I think more people laughed at the title than said "ooo" But hey, if it's good, then it exceeds expectations.

The fact the the film is based on a ride is not that big a deal to me. The Disney people create backstories for the rides as elaborate as a extra in Star Wars. Most of the backstories for the Disney rides are so big they coul be turned into movies.
By the way the film is only loosely based on the ride. There will be some surprises for those they have rode the ride.
I myself look forward to the film greatly.

Does anybody know what it is going to be rated? Since it's Disney film it will most likely be PG. It could be PG-13 but it would be a 1st for Disney. They have never released a PG-13 film under the Disney label. Those higher rated films have always been a Touchstone or Hollywood film releases.
I bet it will be PG.
PG-13 I think.

I know... it's just that as "Disney" they've always produced family oriented work... all PG and G... they've produced all manner of other stuff through their subsidiary companies... but only family fare has garnered the "Disney" emblem. People are worried that they're changing their image. I mean Harry Potter was spooky and scary and kept it PG... that's what people are complaining about.
Kids want to see any movie with "Disney" on the poster... some kids won't get to see this one... at least not right away...
I say who cares... it should be fun!

Pirates was a great flick. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Good story, pretty good acting...and what's better than swordplay, gunfights and skeletal pirates blowing stuff up. Johnny Depp was a great scalawag. Keira Knightley is just drop dead gorgeous and looks so much like Natalie in some scenes. Geoffrey Rush and Orlando Bloom were also excellent. A very fun movie from beginning to end. Two thumbs up from me!

And it did. My other half and I checked it out tonight, we were thoroughly bored and unimpressed. The beginning was slow, then it worked up just a bit to a fun level, then dropped off the scale style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif
SPOILERS BELOW
I don't even remember the character names, so forgive me for naming the actors instead. Sorry guys, this isn't going to be a fun ride if you liked the movie.
Johnny Depp's character was interesting and fun when he first came about. Very unpredictable, enthusiastic and entertaining. However, once Knightley's character was kidnapped his character took a back seat to Orlando Bloom's Tanner (only character name that I remember). There was a back plot that wasn't entirely explained, which sucked, and Tanner took out the usefulness of Depp entirely too early.
Knightley was impressive in the fact that she struck me as being more beautiful than Portman, but her character was stale and seemed to be constantly nagging about every little thing that was occuring.
Bloom's character was a putz as well, a good fighter though, but the lack of the inclusion of the full back story made it rough to identify with him in the film. I preferred him in his other films.
The effects were ok, and I liked the sequences with the skeleton crew, those parts brought the true spirit to the movie. Unfortunately the combination of the action and the effects left little to be desired and I drifted off to sleep after a relatively easy day because of lack of proper pacing and piss poor character development.
If I had to rate it, I wouldn't. The last film that put me to sleep in the theater was Attack of the Clones, and before that it was Pearl Harbor. If you're a fan of character development, good pacing, and fun movies don't waste your time on this.

Nat or Not?

http://www.fan-sites.org/keira-knightley/images/fulls/pirates_premiere/b19.jpg
Kiera's definitely more attractive than Natalie. Her voice is more defined and I thought that her acting skills in Pirates far surpassed those of Portman that I've seen.
She should have been Padme and Lucas should have made Portman the handmaiden style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif
in laymen's terms: Hell No.
She's hot, but Natalie is hotter. And other than Star Wars, Natalie can act, seeing as her other roles like the Professional, and Beautiful Girls got her alot of attetnion. not to Mention Anywhere but here.
Nightley is good, but nothing I haven't seen before.

Wow, you did a total 180 on that.
The key: very little expectations.
I don't know, you can ruin a movie if you go into it thinking it's going to suck. That's why I never see a movie with that expectation! It's like people want it to suck, so it doesn't matter if it was a fun movie. I can tell a few people on this board must have gone to see Pirates with that expectation ???
hey, It's the opposite. going into the movie and thinking you will be impressed but rather become underwhelmed.
yeah, well I think it's a good idea to think, well, maybe this movie isn't going to be the best movie in the world, but I'm going to enjoy it anyway! That's kind of what I was thinking going into T3

I saw it last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. Some of the fighting sequences seemed pointless (I was literally sitting in my seat thinking "Is this going anywhere?"), but nevertheless somewhat interesting due to the fairly interesting characters. It was overall much better than I thought it was going to be.
I agree with a number of others. I don't know how someone could go into a movie like Pirates and expect an Oscar-caliber performance. Lately, I've had to go into movies expecting absolutely nothing for fear of being gravely disappointed.
Do fight sequences have to have a point? style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huh.gif I thought the whole point of fight sequences (especially in swashbuckling movies) is just to look cool, heh heh.

What is that suppose to mean? I just got back from seeing the movie and the critics are wrong. It was an excellent movie. Probably won't win anything. But, so what. It was 12:30 in the day and when I went to see it, it was almost packed for a midday showing. It was a fun movie worth seeing. Better than Hulk was I'll grant that much on it.
I don't see your point bringing up the PT. It has nothing to do with this movie. Critics are not always right. They can't read my mind and possibly know what I like and dislike. Saying don't go see this or that. Ebert 99% of the time hates what I like. I don't listen to them.

He's not liking the good movies right now, which bmeans he might lose his job. the only review I agree with him on so far this year I think was with Reloaded. Maybe Hulk, even though he liked it more than I did. The one critic who hates movies period is Kenneth Turan, of the Los Angeles Times, seeing as he just loathes any comicbook movie, or action film.

Saw POTC tonight and was fairly impressed. I generally hate Johnny Depp but he was extraordinary in this film. His performance alone was worth the price of admission. Overall the movie is a bit too long but a solid summer fx flick.
I'd rate this movie behind X2 as my second favorite movie this summer and just ahead of T3.
I think the camera wokr should be noted in this film. SSome great visuals with just the camera. good close ups. Nice integrating of the f/x.

If looks like a duck, walks like a duck and smells like a duck don't set your mouth for turkey
Pirates of the Carribian (yeah, I can't spell. shut up) is produced by Jerry Brockhimer (I refer to my previous statement^), and given the trailors that I saw, I figured I couldn't take it to seriously.
It reminded me of something GL would do (*cough* with someone else writing dialogue *uncough*). Kind of like the Indiana Jones films where it's real, it's exciting, and at the same time gets you close to saying "Yeah right" (in reference to most action sequences)
Over all I enjoyed it, but probably no.4 of the summer films I have seen thus far, behind Matrix, X2, and Bruce Almighty.

Fortunately enough it had better dialogue and a hotter leading lady than the Star Wars prequels style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif
Movie still sucked though.

I'm not sure how you could say it sucked. The only problem I had was the fighting sequences was just a bit too long. But that was about it. Maybe 15 minutes could have been cut out.

I would honestly have to say that Knightley is hotter than Natalie though.

Can you believe Pirates topped the Box Office this week, with League taking second? I guess the chicks were going out to see Depp and Bloom.
Even the movie critic from The Today Show, Gene Shallot (sp?) liked Pirates and doesn't like anything!
Also, I didn't realize that Knightly chick was only 18! Wasn't she in TPM? Or was it AOTC?

That means she was like 12?! Since she's 18 now, or did the news show I was watching get it wrong?
I'm assuming they shot Ep1 in 1997, post-production in 1998, and the release in 1999.

Well, that's not right, because Corde was functioning as a "Senator" decoy at the beginning. She's not queen, but she's still using body doubles...
... everyone in the theater jumped sure that Padme had been blown up at the beginning of AOTC until she stepped out of the fighter. She's still using them... guess not all of them are still in her employ though...

I suppose there could be a sequel if it told a good story.
My opinion of sequels is that they should only be made if someone has an idea for a sequel and then sets out to write it, not setting out to write a sequel because the first film made money and then searching for story ideas.
It's kind of the way James Cameron has done sequels, like Aliens, when he had an idea for a story that would make a good sequel.

I agree.
Sequels done just the sake of doing them and making money because the originals were successful is a waste of good production money that could be going towards making good movies great and great movies classics.
Why does Dumb and Dumberer come to mind?

Gotta say that I saw the movie twice, loved it, and now own it on dvd, and I have never been to DisneyWorld/Land/Euro/any other thing they want; never been on the ride; never contemplated seeing a film based on a ride; didn't go to see this film because it was associated with the Disney corp.; didn't go because I knew people who went on the ride and liked it so thought the film would be good etc. etc...
I went to see the film because I like Johnny Depp; I enjoy the occasional silly blockbuster; and I was bored one evening.
If anything, I was being severely put off by the ties to a silly ride on the other side of the world - so I didn't see it until it had been out for a few weeks and was already a big hit.
Come on - how much of a percentage who saw this film have been on the ride?
You're probably struggling with 10%.
How many because of the Disney ties?
Well seeing as Disney didn't put their label on it, probably less than that.

next time read what i write. Cause i did give another pirate movie that flopped and i was trying to show they a pirate movie without a big name behind it doesnt stand a chance.
and YES those two are other Disney attactions but Country Bears isnt as big as Pirates or Haunted House. and HH came after Pirates and was hyping itself up too much to have similar success. oh, and the fact that Eddie Murphy has made about 20 bad movies in the last 18 months doesnt help either.
also, i just hate how this movie HAS to have a trilogy. i hope they bomb
First off, the fact that Cuthroat failed is because it wasn't campaigned for and went WAAAAY overbudget. Yes, Pirate movies can do bad, we know this. "Flynn rolling in his grave" was also a quote from some review, so don't try to be witty, unless you are the reviewer.
but reasons why pirates succeeded:
SUMMER MOVIE
Johnny Depp- good performance
Johnny Depp + Orlando Bloom= Teenage girld (see Titanic)
Keira Knightly= Teenage Boys
But come this movie didn't fail, so we can ge over it! The trilogy wont fail.

I went to see it because it looked like a cool movie, and I enjoyed it tremendously. It was probably the most fun I've had in a movie theater in a long time.
Almost everyone I talk to said they really liked it, even though there are a few who didn't, so the idea that it is "overrated" is silly. If people were all saying it was great art, then yeah maybe, but people only enjoy it for what it is and what it is meant to be: a fun time at the movies.

Me Personnaly, I didn't enjoy the film at all in theaters (bad seats, bad day, plus a flick that I thought was kinda boring), but I watched it again on dvd and I thought it was pretty good. Johnny Depp was great, Geoffery Rush was good, Keira Knightley was hot, the fact that they built actual full-size ships is just cool.
It's not a really great film though by a long shot, it was fun, but it's nothing I would watch over and over again.

No, I'm looking forward to them.
Why they make sequels:
movie does well, people enjoy it alot. Not every movie gets made into a sequel. I don't think Battlefield Earth will be made into a sequel. You only here about all the sequels because the movies were good or well liked.

yea i think you wrong. almost every movie today gets made into a sequel. the list is way tooo long for this website to handle. haha. and even though Battlefield Earth did horrible, i did hear that it will get a sequel because of Scientology and its large funding.
yea and Hulk should never get a sequel. and as for Depp getting a nod, its called the Oscars are trying to be hip and cool and do whats popular. he should have gotten an Oscar for his other movies
battleield Earth wont get a sequel, even if Travolta bankrolls it himself. the Distributors know it will fail. do you think they will do another J.Lo Ben Affleck movie? No Gigli wont have a sequel.
Most movies don't have sequels Sith, admit it, you are wrong. 250 films come out on average a year in the US, a very small fraction have the success to become a sequel.

I was hoping he'd get nominated style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif
Before I forget, Johnny Depp got a nod because:
1) his movie was the 3rd highest grossing film of the year
2) His film was the suprise Hit of the year
3) He's been waaaay overdue
4) the critics loved him the film
5) He gave the daring performance of the nominees. ou might not see it SIth, but whathe did was go completely against the flynn character and make the character his own, something all actors should look into. Its why Eddie Murphy was cast in the Haunted Mansion, which still wasn't very good.

god, you just hate me, dont you? get over it and move on pal. more and more movies are getting sequels in todays market. and wow you are able to count that about 250 movies come up and not everyone one does well or has alot of money or support for a sequel. and yes they are too thinking about doing a battlefield earth sequel. but its only being written. and do your research...J Lo and Ben do have another movie together, its called Jersey Girl. yea shes not a huge character but still. producers for it wont even let those two on an ad or poster for that movie so it doesnt bomb like gigli
can someone shut this guy up and support me on the over-abundance of sequels
yeah Jersey Girl was bankrolled before Gigli became a disaster. Before Ben Affleck had the worst year of his life.
You Sith said "most movies get made into sequels" well its not true. The big budget ones do, not the smaller ones.
And yeah they WERE thinking of a Battlefield earth sequel, but they abandoned it after it was called by the New York times "quite possibly the worst movie of the 20th century"

I do not believe that most people saw it because of the Disney ride, but i am sure that some people saw because Disney was behind it. Disney is a big name and has a reputation for making good family movies. So i am sure it didn't hurt. What does it matter why someone saw a movie, it seems to me people go to see movies for a lot of reasons. People, from what i have heard, really enjoyed this movie. It was fun, and action filled, and something different. I mean yeah it was a pirate movie, but the characters where shown different than they have been in the past. Flynn would have loved this movie, IMO.
As for making sequels, if they are confident that they can write good stories i do not see why they shouldn't.

Yup - I think it's quite egocentric to beilieve that the worldwide sucess of a hollywood blockbuster that didn't carry the name 'Disney' was attributed solely to one rollercoaster in an American theme park.

I disagree on 1 and 2. Success of a movie does not have anything to do with the nomination. Look at the other nominees in this particular category of Best Actor. If this were the case then LOTR would have had someone in one of the acting categories.
I agree with 3,4, and 5. He's long overdue.

no i havent. im waiting for others in this forum to toughen up and come out and say that one of the biggest reasons this movie did this well was its relationship to Disney. I bet if CutThroat Island was called Pirates of the Caribbean, it would have done better. You HAVE to agree on that!`

I think its because everyone expected it to be bad (I mean a movie based on a ride...?) but it ended up making everyone have a good time who saw it. One of my friends came back saying it was the best movie he had seen in a long time. And its true, the characters were colorful, the story flowed, and it broke through with marvelous performances (on paper, Jack Sparrow is waaaaay different).

I certainly don't agree with that. I definitely didn't go see this movie because of its Disney label. I've been kind of annoyed with Disney for the past few years and I didn't go see Hercules, Atlantis or Treasure Planet in the theaters. I only saw Hercules because they were playing in a classroom once in highschool and I didn't like it. Somebody gave us Atlantis for a gift and I was half-listening to it while doing something else on the computer and it sounded like an incredibly stupid movie. And I have no plans to see Treasure Planet style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif I go see movies I think will be good and I don't go see ones that I think won't be unless there's some reason for me to go... So many comparisons to that movie have been made to Pirates. however, I must say that Zorro was a better movie overall. I love both though!
and yeah Leia, Disney movies don't always have an audience they crave for. Look at the recent Disney shtick! Brother Bear was aggravting. Atlantis was a staurday morning cartoon made 90 minutes long. Most of thse movies underperfromed. The audience can notice what they like an don't like. Sure a bad movie might get alot, but that's like th efirst weekend. Once its been seen, they don't go back. so its why pirates had legs at the BO, it was well liked!

Hey, I had had a question regarding the story, though I've only now really remembered to ask it:
Was William Turner cursed or not when he was tossed overboard? If the cursed pirates could walk around under water like nothing was wrong, then what's to have kept the elder Turner from drowning, aside from his son lifting the curse eight or nine years later?
In fact, now that I'm thinking about it some more, the fact that they needed Turner's blood meant he was in on the curse too. At least according to all else that was said of the curse.
Marbleman

My thought was that it only affected individuals that took the gold. The whole blood thing I don't know about, hm.
Seanakin
06-04-2004, 10:24 PM
Well, it was my understanding that the blood of everyone who took but one piece was needed to lift the curse. And since they needed Turner's blood to lift the curse, I can only surmise that Turner was among those who removed the gold from the chest. Although why he would doom himself to the curse along with everyone else by sending a piece to his son, I'm not sure.
Justin
06-04-2004, 11:19 PM
What's funny when you think about it is that Will Turner's father was still alive because of the curse making the pirates undead, but when they lifted the curse he would have turned back to normal and drowned.
So the guy killed his dad, basically.

From what I gathered, Bootstrap sent off a piece to England to spite Barbossa and his crew for the mutiny of Cpt. Sparrow, for which Barbossa sent Bootstrap to the depths. Unfortunately for them, he did so BEFORE learning that they needed his blood to lift the curse altogether. It may also have been before they learned that sinking underwater would not affect them as they could not die, period. So unless a shark came along and decided to chow down, I'm thinking the time spent underwater would've been more than enough to have deteriorated whatever had bound the elder Turner to that cannon. (Presumably leather, given that the guy said Barbossa "strapped a cannon to Bootstrap's bootstraps.")
And, like I said, if his blood was needed, then he must also have been cursed. Merely posessing a piece would not curse him, as was demonstrated by both his son and Elizabeth, he had to have removed it from the stone chest. And...nowhere in the movie did anyone in any position to know (which excludes the younger Turner) actually SAY that Bootstrap was dead.
I dunno, the more I think about this probable plot hole, the more I realize...I need to get myself a girl, mate. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.gif

Correct, but only if he were still under water when his son lifted the curse.
But that would've been a stretch of about eight or nine years.
Something struck me in the first film that they needed Bootstrap's blood for the curse to be lifted, and if that were the case, then if Bootstrap had no son the curse could not be lifted at all since he can't bleed. But then again I think Bootstrap was spared from the curse. Maybe he was the exception so when the launched him into the ocean, he actually did die.
Seanakin
06-06-2004, 11:38 PM
I thought that too, except that Barbossa said that the way to lift the curse was to return all 882 gold pieces and "the blood repaid," which I infer to mean the blood of all who took at least one piece from the stone chest.
If Turner hadn't taken a piece from the chest, he wouldn't have been cursed, and therefore his blood wouldn't have been so necessary.

Also, just because they were cursed didn't mean they didn't bleed. Witness the knife pulled out of Barbossa's chest (after an attack attempt that closely resembled one from Raiders of the Lost Ark), it was dripping red. He just didn't die from it.

I'm not a big fan of this movie. I want a darker pirate movie that is R. and who wanted to see Johnny Depp with eye makeup on anyway?!?!
BIG PLOT HOLE.........how come Jack Sparrow never realized he was a ghost before? Like he never was in the moonlight before the end of the movie. I think not
oh dear, you so totally missed the point of the end of the movie!! At the end, Jack Sparrow picks up a handful of coins and as he says "Every, last, one of them" he drops 3 coins in with the cadence of his speaking. What the audience is supposed to see (and you missed) but what Barbosa doesn't see, is that Sparrow does a bit of slight of hand and pockets the fourth coin. He does this purposefully so that (I imagine) 1, while fighting, he is in no danger of dying, and 2, he controls exactly when the curse will be lifted. He couldn't have been cursed before that, because remember, Barbosa left him on the island before the crew went to steal the aztec gold.
And I liked Johnny in eyeliner style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wub.gif
