hey you know that pilot dude hobbie who had the line"two fighters against a star destroyer". well, did he die? because i don't recall him dying. i do know that he never talked, even though luke was like "HOBBIE YOU STILL WITH ME?" (silence) and "HOBBIE YOU NEED TO TAKE THIS SHOT" (silence again). so did he die? just wondering.

In the film, we never see him die. In the novelization of ESB by Donald Glut, Hobbie does indeed die, in one throwaway sentence.
However, LFL later went back and undid this, deeming that line incorrect (apocrypha), allowing Hobbie to be used in the Official Continuity, particularly in the X-wing comics and novels.
So, the answer is, for a while, before the LFL decree about the ESB novelization, he was dead. But, uhm, he's better now.
You can find plenty about Derek "Hobbie" Klivian (alternately spelled Klivan) on the Star Wars Timeline Gold (http://www.starwarz.com/timeline/), where you can use Brien Bell's "Rogue Squadron History" to follow his progression through the squadron.

Hmmm... a character that was dead, is brought back to life with minimal explanation... sounds like a Marvel Comics job, to me... lol

More like DC. Or do you not recall when they killed Superman and paralyzed Batman in the same year, then all we better by the next year?

Just thought you guys might like to take a look at this site. Its called Starwars Obscurities and this particular page gives another ideas as to what happened to Hobbie.
So Lucas does tend to change his mind quite often!!!

Lucas changes his mind about stuff all the time, but for some reason that's too hard for a lot of Star Wars fans to come to grips with.
