How is Leia a Princess?

How is Leia a Princess?? A Princess is the daughter of a king or queen. Granted, Leia's birth mother was Amidala who once served as a Queen... but Amidala's term had expired long before Leia was born, and on top of that, Leia was raised as the step daughter of Bail Organa who was a senator and as far as I know, NOT a "king of Alderraan". Also, Leia's relation to Amidala was buried in secrecy in order to protect her from Vader... this truth was even kept from Leia herself.

So how does Leia deserve the title of Princess?? Shouldn't she have only been regarded as "the step-daughter of a senator" at best?

Am I missing something? Is there some goofy EU thing about the way the government of Alderraan functions, which explains this?

Or have I finally noticed some incredibly huge, obvious, glaring lapse in story logic that I somehow completely looked right past all these years.

And if I am asking a stupid question with some obvious answer hanging right in front of me, please forgive me as I was slightly drunk when this question occurred and I felt prompted to type it up... :herebeer: :rockon:

She wasn't Bail's step daughter - that would mean he would have married Padme. He adopted her as his own daughter and therefore, being the adopted daughter of Queen Breha of Alderaan (Bail's wife), became a princess. The adoption was a secret and it's unlikely most people would have known that she was adopted.

^ True, that. But unless I'm wrong, Bail wasn't a senator at all. He was the Viceroy of Alderaan, wasn't he?

I'm sure he's referred to as "Senator Organa" a few times. He referred to as "Viceroy" in the radio adaptation.
