A few people have mentioned about a song lyrics game. In this thread I'd like to quote some lyrics and see who can guess the song and artist. I listen to a wide variety of music, so there should be something for pretty much everyone in here. I might give out different amounts of points depending on how hard I think they should be to get and we'll just keep score for fun. I'll try and put at least 2 sets of lyrics on each day to keep it interesting.

Ready? Good. Here goes:

"We're free to fly the crimson sky, the sun won't melt our wings tonight."

I'd answer but I cheated. :P

Jedi Master Harrison
04-10-2008, 08:32 PM
^ :bop: Well, I thought this would be quite an easy one to start, especially if anyone knows what my favourite band is! Well anyway, I'll leave each quote for up to 24 hours, if no-one gets it then I'll move on and I get the points! :nahnah: Maybe I should do quote lyrics two at a time to give people more chance. :scratchchin:

U2 even better than the real thing

Jedi Master Harrison
04-11-2008, 06:19 AM
Well, this has been a rip-roaring success.

OK, let's try a wide variety of lyrics then. If there isn't something here for everyone then I'll close the thread and crawl back under my rock. Title and artist of who performed the following lyrics please:

1. For forty days and for forty nights
The law was on her side
But who can stand when she's in demand
Her schemes and plans
'Cause we danced on the floor in the round
So take my strong advice, just remember to always think twice

2. When Im tired and thinking cold
I hide in my music, forget the day
And dream of a girl I used to know
I closed my eyes and she slipped away

3. I hear your voice, its like an angel sighing
I have no choice, I hear your voice
Feels like flying
I close my eyes, oh God I think Im falling
Out of the sky, I close my eyes
Heaven help me

4. I've seen em come; I've watched em go,
Watched em rise, witnessed it and watched em blow.
Watched em up high, suddenly watched em grow.
Watched the lawsuits when they lost the dough.
Best friends and money: I lost them both.

5. Dont question why she needs to be so free
Shell tell you its the only way to be
She just cant be chained
To a life where nothings gained
And nothings lost
At such a cost

6. Late night
Come home
Work sucks
I know
She left me roses by the stairs
Surprises let me know she cares

Edit: Shar got the tune from my first post as I was typing, hooray! I'll give you 1 point each for the title and artist and a bonus point for being the first to answer correctly!

Ah, the Birthday boy comes from behind to take the lead! All correct! Again, I think all were quite straightforward and so worth a point each, but I'll give you an extra point for admitting to Blink 182.

So, just no.4 to go for now (I'll put some more up within the next few hours). As a clue, I'm expecting somebody like Shar to get this one.

OK, next bunch, starting with the only one outstanding from the last lot. :)

1. I've seen em come; I've watched em go,
Watched em rise, witnessed it and watched em blow.
Watched em up high, suddenly watched em grow.
Watched the lawsuits when they lost the dough.
Best friends and money: I lost them both.

2. Hide in the hiding place where no one ever goes.
Put it in your pantry with your cupcakes.

3. Welcome to a new kind of tension.
All across the alien nation.
Where everything isn't meant to be okay.

4. I'm tired of giving a reason
When the future is what we believe in
We love the winter, it brings us closer together

5. Oh the things that you say
Is it life or
Just a play my worries away
You're all the things I've got to
remember
You're shying away
I'll be coming for you anyway

6. Oh uh huh make it magnificent
Tonight
Right
Oh your hair is beautiful
Oh tonight

7. So get down on your knees honey
Assume an attitude
You just pray that I'll be waiting
Cos you know I'm coming soon

Oh - and bonus points for whoever guesses the song title and artist of the quote in my signature.

Edit: The quotes not yet answered (as of my last post in this thread) are bold. Those not have already been guessed.

Good work Kapit, some more difficult spots you've made. Yeah, I was thinking of the Cream version of Spoonful, but I googled it and you are correct it was written by Willie Dixon - 4 points for that. I'm disappointed Flo didn't make it here and get 500 miles, that would have made me laugh, a classic stereotype of Scotland! 2 points for that and The Who, plus 3 for Jay & The Americans, although you did miss out on a further bonus point as I actually prefer the Roy Orbison cover.

Wow, seems I have stumped a few people! :) Rather than give out more lyrics that will give them away, how about some clues.

For number 5 the artist consists of 2 words. The first is what Emp is when he's around women (:nahnah:) and the second is something you eat.

Number 6 is again food related - something you might put in a dish to spice it up. A sunny place may also be involved.

Number 7 is really easy and I'm surprised no-one has got it. This 80's artist wasn't in hell with this track.

5. hey fellas and the people that don't give a funk, all the lovers,
all the haters and all the people that call themselves play-ers hot mamas

You have all failed me for the last time. :vader:

The outstanding track is obviously (:nahnah:) Heaven is a Place on Earth by Belinda Carlisle. Did no-one else live through the 80's?!

Ok, so some new lyrics needed then:

1. Maybe there's nothing more to say
And in a funny way I'm calm
Because the power is not mine
I'm just gonna let it fly

2. Make me feel, make me feel
Like I belong
Don't leave me, you won't leave me here
All Alone
Cast your eyes
Like summer skies
Blue earth and the ocean
Clearer than the skies

3. Everybody needs a place to rest
Everybody wants to have a home
Dont make no difference what nobody says
Aint nobody like to be alone

4. Let's play Twister, let's play Risk.
See you in heaven if you make the list.

5. They never get tired of putting me down
And I'll never know when I come around
What I'm gonna find
Don't let them make up your mind.

6. Politician grannie with your high ideals
Have you no idea how the majority feels ?
So without love and a promise land
Were fools to the rules of a goverment plan
Kick out the style ! bring back the jam !

7. Maybe I will never be
All the things that I want to be
But now is not the time to cry
Now's the time to find out why

8. Trying hard not to hear
But they talk so loud
Their piercing sounds fill my ears
Try to fill me with doubt

OK, it seems like we need some clues:

1. A mainly female group. The drummer's not too hot though!

2. A female vocalist, 1 hit wonder (maybe not in the US, not sure), weather related title.

3. "I need some food for a bodypart", said the guy who was not an employee. Either that is cunningly cryptic, or it's just rubbish!

Ok, well I'm not gonna be around too much for the next week, so we're gonna change the rules slightly - and it will make it better anyway.

From now on, you can only answer 1 set of lyrics at a time.

So, for example, Shar can have 1 guess at a set of lyrics but then has to wait for, say, Flo, to have a guess before he can have his next guess. So that'll give more people a chance to get some right as those who are online when I first put them up used to have an advantage. To help you decide which one to guess first (if you know more than one!), I'll tell you what points I'll award in brackets after the quote.

Here we go!

1. I seen every blue eyed floozy on the way, hey
But their beauty and their style
Wear kind of smooth after a while. (2 pts)

2. All alone
But I'm in a crowded room
I'm sinking, in quick sand tonight
You pick me up, And I shine across the sky till morning,
Then you colour me in (5 pts)

3. Well I can't sleep at night without holding you tight
Girl, each time I try I just break down and cry
Pain in my head oh I'd rather be dead (3 pts)

4. Promises, promises turn to dust
Wedding bells just turn to rust
Trust into mistrust (2 pts)

5. Oh let our love survive
Or dry the tears from your eyes
Lets dont let a good thing die (2 pts)

6. She has a built in ability
To take everything she sees
And now it seems Ive fallen, fallen for her. (2 pts)

7. You got to move it up and use it like a screwball would.
You got to pack it up, work it like a new boy should. (3 pts)

8. You`ve got a little
Way to go before you
Find the knowledge that you`re
Searching for so you`ll
Turn the big world
Upside down
To find the things that you
Never wanted (4pts)

9. I'm a-walkin' in the rain,
Tears are fallin' and I feel the pain,
Wishin' you were here by me,
To end this misery (2 pts)

10. It's Just A Feeling
You Have To Soothe It
You Can't Neglect It
You Can't Abuse It (3 pts)

11. And a crowd of young boys they're fooling around in the corner
Drunk and dressed in their best brown baggies and their platform soles
The don't give a damn about any trumpet playing band (2 pts)

12. Fresh new kicks and pants
You got it like that now you know you wanna dance
So move out of your seat
And get a fly girl and catch this beat (2 pts)

13. Meet me in the lab, pen and pad, don't believe
Huh, sixteens mine, create my own lines
Love for my wordplay that's hard to find
Sophomore, I aint scared, one of a kind (3 pts)

14. Got some revelation put into your hands
Save you from your misery
Like rain across the land
Don't you see
The colour of deception
Turning your world around again (3 pts)

15. Ever since I saw your face
Nothing in my life has been the same
I walk around just saying your name
Without you my world would end, yeah
I've searched around this whole damn place (3 pts)

16. Her heart is racing... you cant keep up
The night is bleeding like a cut
Between the horses of love and lust
We are trampled underfoot (4 pts)

17. Make my way to the refrigerator,
One dry potato inside, no lie
Not even bread, jam,
When the light above my head went bam! (2 pts)

18. Close my eyes
Shes somehow closer now
Softly smile, I know she must be kind
When I look in her eyes
She goes with me to a blossom world (2 pts)

19. You hurt and abuse tellin' all of your lies.
Run around sweet baby, Lord how they hypnotize.
Sweet little baby, I don't know where you've been.
Gonna love you baby, here I come again. (3 pts)

Well, the new 'only 1 answer per person' at a time didn't seem to work, did it? But as I wasn't around to regularly update it, I'll allow them, but only 1 guess at a time and then wait for someone else to guess from now on!

All 4 answers from Solo and Shar are correct, but that still leaves a few lyrics so I'll add a bit more to them (or maybe a clue) and perhaps that will allow people to guess.

Solo, everyone with musical taste knows the effect that the Velvet Underground has had on future rock/pop artists. Sweet Jane is an absolute classic and anyone who is not familiar with it should listen to it! Shar, Hammer may be cheesey, but it's still classic! KF, sorry mate, I'm not that talented! Sargoth, you may struggle a bit to find too much metal in here, that is one genre that I'm not too big on, but I'll see what I can dig out for you.

2. All alone
But I'm in a crowded room

Ah, well, Enter Sandman is one of the few Metallica tracks I like, hence I picked it - and I couldn't name one Megadeath song so I just googled it - it could have just as easily been a rare B side. :ohwell:

Nice one Snake! Although perhaps I should just remind eveyone that you are only allowed to guess 1 lyric at a time and then wait for someone else to have a guess, to give everyone a chance. But since you are new to this game, I'll give you 6 points and a head start over everyone else!

Silver Machine - I was thinking of the Hawkwind (I think that was the original?) version. I'll give you The Corrs as they did do a cover of the REM classic, although I'm not sure if it was commercially released.

More lyrics - Snake, you can't guess one until someone else has.

1. Come closer
Baby closer
Reach out and feel my body
I'm gonna give you all my love
Ooh sugar don't you hurry
You've got me here all night
Just close your eyes and hold on tight

2. He's got morning glory, life's a different story
Everything going jackanory, in touch with his own mortality
He's reading balzac, knocking back prozac
It's a helping hand that makes you feel wonderfully bland
Oh it's the centuries remedy
For the faint at heart, a new start

3. To the extreme I rock a mic like a vandal
Light up a stage and wax a chump like a candle
Dance go rush to the speaker that booms
I'm killing your brain like a poisonous mushroom

But you probably don’t think nothin’ of me."

I thought we were allowed make as many guesses as we could. Anyway, I learnt my lesson. One guess on every contest. Fine, I can live with it.

You can have as many guesses as you like in one contest in total BUT after you have guessed one answer then you have to wait until someone else guesses before giving another answer.

I just did that to stop it being unfair. For example, if I post at 11pm here, but you are already in bed, it would be unfair if Snake (for example) guessed all 5 in a row and you didn't get a chance to play. :)

 :bop: Maybe there are some similar lyrics in there. This song was a big hit in the 80's.
