In " Empire" what made Vader take the approach Luke did not know he was his father. He seemed to have already known a conversation between OBW and Luke. A converation that still doesn not make sense anyway, even Luke questioned it in the end. Or was Vader gambling on typical Jedi lies and ommisions to the Skywalker clan as an angle to give Luke a sense of distrust in the jedi?

I'd say it's a very very educated guess. Look at it this way...does Luke act in anyway that would make it seem like he has the first clue who Darth Vader is besides "really bad guy"?

Plus, his statement of "Obi-Wan never told you what really happened to your father" could very well been a fishing expedition.

I'd also expect that he can sense it a certain bit. Luke was horrible at hiding his feelings, even later on in Jedi when he Vader gleaned he had a sister, a twin at that. If he could pull that sort of info out of Lukes head at that point, he almost certainly could have figured out that Luke had no clue who Vader really was.

Vader also could have guessed that Obi-Wan would have told Luke that his father had died at the hands of Vader becuase thats how Obi-Wan is.

Vader's familiarity with that lying old :censored: as noted by Cassus Fett. Simple observation of Luke's conduct, as Kam Solusar notes. Knowledge of the Force, of what the Force was telling him beyond Luke's thoughts. Add them all together, and--what was left for him to guess about? He knew.

Vader knew he didnt know about him being his father...just for the simple fact that if he did then he would have gone after him alot sooner!

Maybe he knew, because Luke never sent him a card on Father's Day.
