I can't believe there isn't a thread for this already!
Undoubtedly the best Star Wars homage anywhere in the universe!

I KNEW that the forum was missing something...something...something...dark side.
I've never really watched Family Guy, but Blue Harvest was absolutely awesome. Good thread Bendy. ;)

This was absolutely brilliant - geek-orgasm-tastic indeed! I have only ever seen a few episodes of Family Guy, but this was top class! I am still laughing at the portrayal of Obi-Wan!

When I first saw it I immediately assumed that the artists had cartooned over the actual shots from the movie, but it wasn't till the dvd that they showed all the artists animinating each shot from scratch! :thud:
The work and attention to detail that went into it is mind boggling - almost the entire show was wanting to be involved somehow.

Pfft. "Robot Chicken: Star Wars" completely trumps this tripe.
Seriously, "Deal or No Deal"? Cleavland-D2 carries a bag of "herbs"?
Reaaaaaal inspired stuff, there.

bah! men playing with toys making puerile attempts at humour does not qualify as comedy in my mind :saber:
Besides, re-enacting star wars using star wars toys has been done by just about every fanboy since the invention of the super-8 - Robot Chicken is nothing but a tired cliche
The entire production team of Family Guy was intimately involved in the production for over a year - the production quality eclipses anything that they've developed in the series so far.

The reason you decry RC is, IMO, the reason why it works so well. We've all been there and played with those toys, and for that reason it connects with us on a youthful level
And please, please don't throw the cliche argument in a Family Guy thread. I already mentioned two of the "jokes" that Family Guy used, do you want me to keep going with how completely unoriginal the show is? At least RC:SW made their own jokes and sketches, instead of just ripping off the plot of the whole movie and then changing around some words to make a "joke"
The writing on Family Guy is, without a doubt, one of the single most horrible examples of unoriginality in the world. You "reference" something that has happened in pop culture, and then change the words around in order to seem original. Yeah, the animation may have been pretty good, but the rest of the show was completely useless.

you do know the meaning of parody? they didn't 'rip-off' the plot of star wars - the RE-CREATED the entire movie shot by shot! Lucas even gave them the entire ORIGINAL SCORE to use to further enhance the experience.
Kudos to RC for getting George himself to read some dialogue (which is impossible for SW, but maybe for ROTS GL will make an appearance) but RC is just another fanboy's masturbatory dream, while Blue Harvest is truly a work of art

No. I have no clue.

See, I did my best to throw away my normal bias towards Family Guy, but in the end, it was Same S**t, Different Day. Yes, they re-created the show. Shot for shot. And used the original music. So...besides actually animating it and doing voices...what did the guys behind Family Guy do? They, again, do absolutely nothing on their own to actually parody anything. What, they throw in a few new lines and some different pop culture references and call it their own?
But then you look at Robot Chicken, in which they actually write brand new sketches. They took the characters we know and love and put them in hilarious situations. They took the time to make up their own stuff and write completely new material.
And while traditional animation is time consuming, it's nothing like puppet animation.

I'll have to watch RC and compare the two. With no real background of watching either show, I have to say I thought that BH was really well done and extremely funny.

The problem with the Robot Chicken special was it had previously used material in it... If they had done all new stuff it would have been much better. It's still very funny though.
And in case anyone is interested... The FGP: BH DVD is on sale at Target for $9.99 (for the regular) and $19.99 (for the deluxe edition)...

I've seen it, and I must say I was actually rather impressed. I loved R2 leaning out the Falcon window showing them how to shoot, and Han's phone home... yeap, I like it.

I have also seen both and while Family Guy was funny, Robot Chicken was funnier. I smile through FG but laugh out loud at RC. I thought taking the characters and putting them in different situations was more original than changing a few words.
I enjoyed the special features more. The interview with George was interesting. The 3D scene was different.

I only saw the Robot Chicken one...and I thought it was crappy.
Seriously...the humor was rather dull, and the "clay" appearance was rather dumb. There were some funny parts...but overall I was not really laughing.
The part with George Lucas and the tauntaun fan was also extremely annoying.

oh please - do you have any idea the amount of work that went in the just animating it??? it's an astounding piece of work from a sw fan's pov, but it's 10x the quality of animation from a normal Family Guy episode.

I doubt that - I'd say Seth Green immediately 'thought' of the idea after he read his own star wars episode script from Family Guy - he's just ripped off the concept from another show he's working on.
face it - RC is amusing, even funny at times, but it's a pale comparison next to Blue Harvest!
And while traditional animation is time consuming, it's nothing like puppet animation.
true dat - anyone with a 6pack and handy cam to animate a puppet

It takes roughly nine months from final script to finished color. In between you have the main director (in America) doing some of the key layouts for the episode. There's also an assistant director that does some of the same basic things, but to a lesser extent. This is, of course, after the voices have been recorded
From there, it gets shipped off to Korea where a whole bunch of animators fill in everything and send the first version back to America, where notes are made. Then it's all sent back to Korea, they fix the mistakes, colors are added, and then it goes through the final run-through.

Considering Robot Chicken did SW sketches far before Family Guy did, I'm gonna go on a limb and say that Seth Green thought of it before MacFarlane, but who knows?
And considering they both have the same type of humor (pop culture references), Robot Chicken wins because it takes these references and makes something out of them, instead of just believing the reference is enough for the laugh. Optimus Prime with Prostate Cancer? Family Guy would never do anything like that.

Uhhh...no...The puppet has to be moved for every single frame. So, since it's a TV show, it'd be 30 frames a second, and assuming it'd take 5 minutes for each frame, that's 150 minutes just to do one second of footage. Good luck with that ;)

exactly! it took well over a year to make Blue Harvest, with everyone on the Family Guy show begging to be involved - the behind the scenes segment on the dvd was an eye opener in terms of the dedication and (ok I'll say it) love everyone on the show has for star wars. The story boards alone are amazing, let alone the finished product.

the director made a point of congratulating the animators in Korea for the quality they produced over n above a normal show - soooo many shots had CG elements, done precisely the way the original movie was shot.
I mentioned before I had thought they used the real footage and just animated over the top, but they created it all from scratch!

Will confirm but I think the very first Family Guy had a star wars reference (gawd the first season is awful tho!) but there's no doubting Seth MacFarlane's obsession with SW when you see the interview he did with GL.
And considering they both have the same type of humor (pop culture references),
Family Guy is referencing specifically 80s tv and pop culture, not general pop culture. You look pretty young in your photos (no insult intended!) so probably some of the references are lost, but it's almost embarassing when I laugh at the jokes coz I remember laughing in earnest at the original show in the 80s :superhappy:

No, but they did have show's resident peadophile playing Obi-Wan

No problemo!
(gawd the first season is awful tho!)Honestly, I think the first season is far better than 4 or 5, because at least in season 1 they concentrated on telling some semblance of a story

No, I don't remember exactly what happened during that time, but I do understand a lot of references to that time period. There aren't too many that get past me, but it does happen.
No, but they did have show's resident peadophile playing Obi-Wan :laughing:Which was just a convenient character who was a suitable age to play Obi-Wan, and really, nothing more. Again, the originality is flowing as fast as a leaky faucet.
twas only a joke joyce ;)We need an emoticon of a smilie holding a sign that says "THIS IS A JOKE" on it. It'll make things so much easier

They're both funny. In completely different ways. I'm particularly fond of the way Blue Harvest referenced Robot Chicken at the end and Peter went into a huge monologue over it. It was almost like reading this thread...
