View Full Version : Survey: Who's Your Favorite "Supporting Cast" OT Character?

This is a kinda differant question. Who is your favorite charactor who is not a main charactor. ( In other words, not including the likes of Luke,Leia, Han,Chewie, Vader, Boba, and the likes.) And why.

Mine: Biggs Darklighter. Why? I have always thought fighter pilots were cool as hell. And I have always liked a person(fictional or real life ) that had the guts to sacrifice everything for what they believe in. The rebel pilots who went up against the Death Star were the bravest of the brave. It was a suicide mission, they had to know it going in. But they went anyways. After almost all the other pilots had met their fate it woulda been easy to run away. Biggs stayed in the trench to cover Luke even after Wedge had bailed. Biggs had to know he was making a choice that would cost him his life. But he stayed. He did his job, buying a few precious seconds that Han and Chewie needed to save Lukes butt. Its too bad Biggs never got to see the fruits of his sacrifice.

Good thread, Coyote, and good answer.

I think I would pick Wedge. Because he kicks butt. He is the only "peripheral" character to appear in all of the OT movies (that I can think of at the moment, anyway), and the only pilot to fly both Death Star assaults. (And off topic, the EU made me love him even more.)

I also really like Toryn Farr: "Stand by ion control... fire!" But maybe she, as a one-line character, is too peripheral to even be considered "supporting cast."

Wow. Wedge? Wedge "I'm-Hit-I-Can't-Stay-with-You" Antilles? Master of the flying dash for the tall grass? Wedge?

Sure, he made a big comeback on Hoth and at Endor, but, still...he bailed from the Trench...left Darlighter and that idiot Luke to fend for themselves...

Move along? But...I've only been here a few weeks...

But, yeah, Luke's not too bright. I didn't know it was a secret? Leia got the looks and the brains, Luke got the midi chlorians, and they both have their father's temper.

If you could add Leias looks and brains and Lukes physical abilities you'd have one heck of a Jedi.

Perhaps. Either that, or one very whiny hermaphrodite...

For awhile I was a Wedge fan. But as I thought about it I kinda soured on my view of Wedge, at least in "A New Hope". From what we see in the movie there is nothing to suggest he could not have stayed in the trench. His X-wing was in good enough shape to haul ass away from the Death Star once Luke made his shot. I think he could have done something other than leave Biggs and Luke alone. He could have tried to disrupt Vader and his wingmen somehow.
He did make up for it later in his career, becoming probably the best fighter pilot the Alliance had.

I have to agree with the Wedge vote. Well, Wedge and Chewie. I love them both! :)

The problem I'm having is that there are scarcely any characters in the supporting cast division in the Original Trilogy. There are Our Heroes, and then the dweebs that hang with Luke, Yoda, and everyone else is pretty much one degree or another of two-legged scenery/cannon fodder.

If pressed, I'd have to say, Zev Senesca. He's not much of a character, but I always was fond of the scene where his speeder is racing over the undulating terrain of Hoth. On the big screen in '80, that was extremely cool. Of course, the Asteroid Field was cooler, but Zev over hill and dale was still pretty darn cool.

Yea but do you follow a direct order when that order makes no sense? And the fact that Luke was the flight leader is laughable.

He obeyed a direct order from the leader of his flight (Luke).

And we can dissect Luke's reaction to Wedge's whiny declaration of incapacity/ineptitude in two ways.

1) What do you do when one of your wingmen calls in sick? In the thick of battle? Do you take the time to compel him to remain in position, distracting yourself from the mission, compromising your chances of success, let alone survival. Or do you just tell him to go ahead, since he claims he has to, anyway, so you can get back to the business of trying to stay alive long enough to destroy the Death Star? I think the latter.

2) Just how much did authority did Luke's...battlefield promotion...carry? Green, never flown with the squad before... It's a wonder he followed his own orders--whoops, he didn't: he was taking orders from the disembodied voice of Obi-Wan Kenobi, and even he hadn't managed not to muff an assignment since capping Grievous... It was practically the Three Stooges running down the Trench. Darklighter at least distinguished himself by staying put, which Wedge didn't, and having combat experience, which Luke didn't.

Wedge decided to take a hike. It's not pretty, but there it is.

Perhaps Luke ordered Wedge to leave because, uh, he really couldn't do any more good back there (coupled with the fact that the Rebellion could not afford to waste pilots lives like the Empire could. Had Wedge stayed, he probably would have just soaked up laserfire from Vader or one of his wingmates.

As for Luke's 'battlefield promotion' and not having any combat experience, you seem to completely forget that Luke had just helped infiltrate the most secure military space station in the galaxy, break into its detention block, rescue a captive scheduled to be terminated, all while fending off and shooting numerous Imperial Stormtroopers (and shooting down two pursuing TIE Fighters).

And as for Obi-Wan, he had completed assignments after he disassembled Grievous, some of which were, oh, doing as Yoda said and defeating Darth Vader and watching over Luke on Tatooine.

Oh, getting the thread back on topic, my favorite OT supporting character is (and this may prove shocking and unexpected to everyone:wink:):

any of the Imperial Dignitaries!

We'll never know, because...Wedge took a hike. And remember, "The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of the Force." From which it follows, the whole Battle of Yavin was a waste of effort, and pilots, on both sides.

"They let us go. It's the only explanation for the ease of our escape." So said Leia Organa, who was a lot sharper than her brother. And, since Lord Vader had equipped the Millennium Falcon with a tracking device, I believe she was right. The "infiltration" was a capture and release program. Fluke was set up.

And as for Obi-Wan, he had completed assignments after he disassembled Grievous, some of which were, oh, doing as Yoda said and defeating Darth Vader and watching over Luke on Tatooine.

Obi-Wan defeated Vader? When? Obi-Wan was sent to kill Anakin. You'll notice that Anakin survived. And later, it seems, Anakin killed Obi-Wan. And the Emperor, no thanks to Master Kenobi. Way to go, Obi! And, if he'd been doing his business on Tatooine, the Larses would probably have survived. It's a wonder Luke survived. Had it not been for Artoo--the real hero of Episode IV--he wouldn't have.

Oh, getting the thread back on topic, my favorite OT supporting character is (and this may prove shocking and unexpected to everyone:wink:):

Well, I'd say, "What? Palpatine's yes-men?" But that seems to have started a considerable amount of unintended trouble the last time. :yoda:

I'm still for Zev Senesca. Anyone who wants to, feel free to take a shot.

Idiot Luke?

Sarah, is that you, hun? :scratchchin:

Gotta say I agree about Wedge though. I'm hit, I can't stay with you...? He couldn't fly fast enough to back Luke up in the trench, but he sure made it far enough away when that 75 mile wide station went kablooey.

RollaFett
10-29-2007, 01:18 PM
Yeah he did. What's especially lame about Wedge's bailing is his pathetic, "sorry" line that he throws out there as he's leaving. Ugh.

Now with that said, I think he did adequately redeem himself at both Hoth and Endor. Doesn't make you forget entirely about Yavin, to be sure, but it can't be ignored either.

Oh, Darrill and Blizz, I think that Lord Tesla is more on the jesting side rather than performing actual cold criticism. I could be wrong, though.

As for me, while I do like Wedge as well, I'm gonna go with an overlooked character: Admiral Piett. Yes, the Imperial officer who would NOT be force-choked by Vader, despite a perceived big-time screw up at Cloud City. He even managed to retain his command onboard the Executor for ROTJ, before it became what appeared to be a huge flaming matchbook.

Many reasons really. I first got interested in them when Palpatine turned to talk to the two in the throne room when Vader left, and wondered what about and why they were even there at all. Then the EU had to give just enough trickles of info on them over the years to keep me interested. If you want to know more, I'd be more than happy to elaborate on the Dignitaries....

Who "you personally"? Me, personally? Not to worry, never crossed my mind.

That said, I think the only reason the Sarlacc was so feared is that the--what do you call a resident of Tatooine, anyway, Tatooinian?--them fellers didn't have enough lawns and gardens to have developed a proper appreciation of the gopher's, even the carnivorous, tentacled, hypometabolic gopher's, proper place in the food chain.

Send Bill Murray to Tatooine for a week, end of Sarlacc phobia/problem.
